Future with Bucs?
Yes, after an NFL record was set yesterday by Mr. Entertaiment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, becoming the first NFL quarterback to throw 450 or more yards in consecutive games — it’s stunning to think Jameis is the first — a lot of chatter has shifted to Jameis returning.
And it seems Jameis wants to.
We all know Jameis will be a free agent this offseason, unless the Bucs sign and/or franchise tag him before the free agency dinner bell rings in March.
And while hot dog eating contest-protesting, mock draft-scowling, L.L. Bean-wearing, Second Amendment abolitionist, Mike Florio-arguing, parrot-insensitive, chewing-with-his-mouth-open, soup-gulping, California train-romancing, anti-football proliferation, outhouse-admiring, airline-napping, steerage-flying, Yogi Berra-worshiping, urinal picture-taking, video game-playing, Taylor Swift-listening, pickpocket-thwarting, Bucs-uniform-frowning, Allie-LaForce-smitten, Big-Ten-Network-hating, pedestrian-bumping, olive oil-lapping, popcorn-munching, coffee-slurping, fried-chicken-eating, oatmeal-loving, circle-jerking, craft beer-chugging, cricket-watching, scone-loathing, college football-naïve, baseball-box-score-reading, NPR-honk, filthy-hotel-staying, fight-instigating, barista-training, Budweiser-tolerant, baseball scorecard-keeping, pasta-feasting, vomit-dodging scrooge social activist NFL insider Peter King of NBC Sports abhors Jameis’ picks, King also sees the big picture and thinks the Bucs are out of their minds to let Jameis get away, so King wrote this morning.
And after talking to Jameis yesterday, King learned that the fifth-year quarterback doesn’t want to leave west-central Florida.
The Bucs are suddenly dangerous. They’ve won five of six, averaging 31 points per game in that impressive run, and no matter who they play at wide receiver, Jameis Winston finds a way to hit them. On Sunday in Detroit, he became the first quarterback ever to throw for more than 450 yards in back-to-back games. The only negative is that Winston leads the league in interceptions (24) as well as passing yards (4,573), and he just doesn’t seem to be able to make those stop.
“The one thing I have to work on is protecting the football,” Winston told me from Detroit after Tampa’s 38-17 rout of the Lions. He’s right. If I’m Bucs GM Jason Licht, I try to do a bridge deal with Winston—maybe two years near the top of the market—while seeing if coaches Bruce Arians and Byron Leftwich can coach the giveaways out of him. But I don’t let him go. Would you have let a bombs-away Matthew Stafford or Philip Rivers get away after five seasons? “Of course I want to be in Tampa,” he said. “But we’ve got to finish the season first. Whoever makes that decision, I hope it ends up with me staying.”
The other issue: With the Bucs 7-7 now, they’re unlikely to have a top-10 draft choice, and unlikely to be in position to take a top-three QB in the 2020 draft. It’s all lining up for Winston to enter a sixth year as Tampa quarterback in 2020, and rightfully so.
Of course, it takes two to tango, but Joe’s ideal take on Jameis’ new contract would be a two-year deal with an option for a third, loaded with incentives (key among them, fewer turnovers = more cash). Would Jameis’ camp except this? It’s a helluva gamble.
The Joker here in the background that might drive the price up on Jameis is Chucky. The next home game for the Raiders will be in Las Vegas and with Mark Davis flush with cash moving into his new state-of-the-art crib and all sorts of new revenue streams, Davis very well could push the cost of keeping Jameis through the ceiling.
All it takes is one serious team (Las Vegas, Indianapolis, Miami?) and Team Glazer is in a pickle.
King also knighted Jameis with one of his “Offensive Players of the Week” honors and cited Jameis for leading the Bucs through a “competency streak .”

If Jameis wants a cap friendly deal to continue building here, that might work, but if he wants to break the bank, good luck elsewhere. Every mega deal for a QB leads to lack of cap flexibility to build a long term contender. It’s not an accident that Brady’s cap friendly deal has kept the Patriots on top for years.

I said last year they should have signed him, now we have lost leverage and this could turn out bad either from losing a QB standpoint or a overpaying standpoint. The great organizations have foresight and the bad ones get themselves in situations just like this. Like him or not we should have signed him last year when we had all the leverage, now will shall see.

For the right price, no player is indispensable in the NFL, because in the final analysis, IT’S A BUSINESS. For instance, if we franchise tag Jameis and then Chucky offers us Derek Carr PLUS their 2020 AND 2021 first round draft picks, I bet Bucs’ management would think long & hard about that one.
(Hint: Carr’s under contract through 2022 for an average salary of around $21 mil per year … he’s currently completing 70.0% of his passes, has 19 TDs against 8 INTs). And just think what we could do with TWO EXTRA 1st Round picks, in addition to our own.

Take a look around the league and you’ll see a lot of very so-so starting QBs out there…..good ones in short supply…..keep Jameis but keep in mind the payroll will explode to keep Shaq Barrett, extend Chris Godwin and find some offensive linemen…..

Jameis has so much potential. I’m just happy our team seems to have turned the corner. This offseason will be critical. I’m sure everyone returning for year 2 is only going to get better. I believe it was said by Godwin in the offseason that BA makes his WRs run a lot and he needed more train his running more.

I love the fact that Buc “fans,” are going out of their way to crap on our QB while practically everyone else in football is recognizing him for his brilliant play as of late. Yards, Touchdowns, Third down conversion percentages and breaking the franchise scoring record with two games to play, doesn’t mean anything to these fools. Ndog … I agree with you in principle, BUT … Bucs had a whole new coaching regime coming in and needed a MAJOR rebuild. What we’ve mostly got are players on the FIRST contract and FAs on 1-year contracts. There are several 2nd contract guys here now on multi-year contracts (like Donovan Smith, Marpet, Dotson, Brate, ME13, LVD), but relatively few when looked at from the 53-man team perspective.
Yes we probably could’ve gotten Jameis ‘cheaper’, but how many REALLY knew how Jameis would perform in BA’s Bombs Away system? Jameis is just ONE of several contract ‘challenges’ BA & Licht will face this off-season. If the Bucs don’t improve the quality of the TEAM surrounding Jameis, we’d probably get the same results next year that we’ve seen this year (outside looking in at the playoffs). We’ve got a LOT of players who we need to get under contract.

Most QBs have the benefit of huge endorsement deals that bring in millions….Unfortunately, Jameis must rely almost entirely on his salary so I suspect he will try to hammer out the best deal possible.

Derek Carr – LOL behind our line he would turn into David Carr.
We need a better O-Line this game showed what Jameis can do with good blocking. Look at the great QBs now and what is the commonality? Good line and good running game. Jameis has an average line at best and no-running game. I think opposing coaches look at it like let’s stop the run and make Jameis beat us and guess what he is.
Also Leftwich is starting to see our limitations running the ball and he is like ok you want to put 8 men in the box and single cover all my receivers good luck with that. The most important signings are going to be Shaq “sack” Barrett, and Jameis after that Godwin should be extended and JPP. Also if we need the money Brate is always an option to release/restructure.
I think in the Draft Priorities should be O-line, Safety, D-Line, RB. Would love if we could bring the entire line back and sign another edge rusher and another big man in the middle. We are going to get a low first rounder most likely so either trade back or draft the best of the 4 listed above.

Jpp and suh May look for a home and decent money to call it a career. Shaq doesn’t seem base on what he’s said is after big moneys. He’s happy he got the opportunity —— and he likes Bowles defense.
Important note – the dline has built chemistry and they like to play with each other. Specially knowing Vita vea is here will make the decision easy for them.

We will be back here next year with the same arguments. Jameis will get a two year guarantee in a four year possible contract. It will probably be for somewhere around 55 million in guaranteed cash.
Then we’ll start another year and Jameis will blow the first two games and give away a couple more before he remembers how to play football.
It will happen because the last two games of this season are going to make him second guess himself and it will fester until next season.
He really does need a QB whisperer to straight him out.

I fail to understand your rationale behind a Bucs-Raiders trade. From the Raiders perspective, why give up two #1’s and your QB for a free agent? I’m unsure if a team can franchise tag a player and trade him. Perhaps you could enlighten me on that possibility as that is the only circumstance that would make your scenario viable …

How is this for a “cap friendly” deal.
JW takes one for the team in order to build an SB roster, much has Brady has done for the Pats all these years.
But it shouldn’t be just JW gambling. His deal should have a bonus clause that pays him a % of any cap money NOT spent on the roster. IE The Bucs wouldn’t make money off JW’s cheap contract…but they could use it to increase cap space.

The media(including Joe) thinks its the Bucs decision on franchising Jamies or giving him a new multi year contract. Joe and the rest of the media are wrong…it is Jamies that will either decide on agreeing to a new deal with the Bucs or he will make the Bucs use the franchise tag on him.

Jamies has the leverage not the Bucs.
The Bucs should aggressively offer Jamies a multi year contract. Otherwise the Bucs will be in the same position the Redskins were in with their QB four years ago.
The Redskins franchised Kirk Cousins in 2016 and again in 2017(which put them in Cap Hell). The Redskins ended up with a terrible roster while Cousins moved on to have great success with a Vikings team that has a great defense and great running game.

My ideal deal is a 5-year deal, with the first 2 fully guaranteed. So basically it’s a bridge deal, but gives the Bucs their starting QB if Winston continues to improve as I’d expect him to.

But let me ask you … “What’s the impact of an offer like that on what the Bucs NEED to do in 2020 in terms of ‘filling holes’ to be a playoff contender? (IOW, which starters & key rotational players COULDN’T we sign IF we paid Jameis that much?). And how do you propose filling the holes that’d be left if we don’t re-sign our current starting FAs? (for instance, would it require that you replace Suh … a #2 pick in the 2010 draft … with a 4th or 5th round draft pick & expect the same performance?)

I wouldn’t say Jameis has THE leverage, but he has plenty of leverage.
The Bucs won’t offer him unless they believe he’s their guy. Arians really isn’t keeping a big secret regarding his belief in Jameis. Given that, it’s going to be a heck of a lot cheaper to pay the man now than pay him later.

813bucboi … Not against signing Jameis to a ‘long-term deal’ at all. But to me a long-term deal is 2-3 years, maybe 4. Have seen too many teams who sign a ‘franchise QB’ to a huge deal, then can’t surround him with the necessary talent & the team sucks.
The beauty of the NFL Salary Cap system is that it functions as the Great Equalizer, just like it was intended to be. Overpay for one, two, three or more players and something else gets short-changed … resulting in a weakness that other teams exploit. Very few QBs can be surrounded by mediocre talent & still win. That’s what impresses me so much about Brady & Brees ‘team-friendly contracts’. They understand full well what it takes to be consistent winners in the NFL.

813bucboi … Apologize for not answering your question about who I’d sign first. My personal preference would be to FIRST resign the defensive starters who we need to succeed next year … JPP, Suh, Barrett, Nassib … THEN make an offer to Jameis. Make sure though that we STILL have enough salary Cap remaining to sign our DEPTH FAs (Mincey, Adams, Nunez-Roches, Ryan Smith, Perriman, Barber, Watford, Wells, Auclair) PLUS sign our rookie class AND a quality veteran Safety & OLineman. We can always franchise Jameis if we need to, although I’d personally rather not.
We’ve presently got 35 under contract for 2020, but I expect that’ll really be closer to 30-32 in terms of ‘keepers’. Add to that the 13 mentioned above, PLUS Jameis, PLUS our rookie class and we’d be about where we should be in terms of the 53-man TEAM to start the season next year. It’s all doable if guys don’t get selfish and try to break the bank. If they try to, find someone else.

We are riding a high-high! We’ve reeled off 4 straight and we can attribute it to good complementary football: Offense, defense, special teams, and coaching.
As excited as I am about our offense, it is our defense that has been the most improved.I think most people would have expected our offense to be this good, considering the last two seasons prior.
We fell into this trap when our defense was so good back in ’16 when they played lights-out for 6 games.

I was really responding to your first statement … “I fail to understand your rationale behind a Bucs-Raiders trade. … when I said that it was an example. There really was no ‘rationale’ per se; it was just a hypothetical situation to make a point.

Jameis definitely has got some re-up momentum going right now, but remember guys, we’re talking about the Bucs here. And if we’ve learned one thing about big decisions here, they almost always turn out badly. Therefore, let him walk

^ na man, no way he walks…..he knows this is his place and WE know he’s our QB going forward….its just a matter of friendly number working….he knows he’ll get the best deal here but knows we need to retain that D thats gonna cost us….how friendly will he be?

A lot of Bucs fans that post on here deserve to see what happens if they get their wish and Jamies goes to a team like the Bears or Panthers.
Year 1 the Bears or Panthers would be Super Bowl contenders.

BUCFAN1987 The NFL cares enough to say if Winston has Any other “hassles” he will no longer be a part of the NFL period. I’d say that it is very much in their “care” box.
Caution is always a good negotiation Avenue tactic. Keep showing us what you can do Jamise the decision will be made for or against you staying around after the last game of the season.
