Your NFL Passing Yards Leader, Jameis Winston
December 15th, 2019It’s a two-man race for the title of most prolific passer of the 2019 NFL regular season.
No other quarterbacks are in the same zip code.
Hey, Dirk Koetter called it two years ago on the Ira Kaufman Podcast.
America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, now has 4,573 yards passing with two games remaining. After the Cowboys clobbered the Rams today, Dallas QB Dak Prescott’s 212 yards passing left him with 4,334 total yards passing in 2019.
That’s a fat lead for Jameis.
Will Jameis lead the NFL in passing yards? Has a Bucs quarterback every accomplished the feat? Joe’s confident Bucs fans know the easy answer to the latter question.
What a fun accomplishment this would be for Jameis, who has two soft pass defenses remaining on the schedule in the Texans and Falcons. Prescott has the Eagles and Redskins, and they aren’t special defenses, either.
Peyton Manning owns the single-season record for passing yards with 5,477 in 2013. Last year, Ben Roethlisberger led the way with 5,129 yards, while Patrick Mahomes squeaked past the 5,000-yard mark in second place.
Koetter was adamant that Jameis and the Bucs could throw for 5,000 yards every season but it wouldn’t equal wins. At time the time, Joe agreed with Koetter but though the Bucs should find out just to be sure.
Hitting 5,000 won’t win anything this year, but perhaps it will make the Bucs realize how special the offense could be with a decent running back to balance things out.

Get it Jameis.
December 15th, 2019 at 7:36 pm
Heck, a couple of 300 yard games would still mean breaking 5k!
December 15th, 2019 at 7:37 pm
Will be a tough go without Evans and Godwin, but I’ll root for him anyways. Go Jameis!
December 15th, 2019 at 7:38 pm
But Joe those 300 yards and 3TDs WinsNot threw in the first half are all garbage yards right? Defenses aren’t playing hard when they’re down 21-3.
Plus anybody can throw for 300 yards and 3 TDs in the first half when they have Scotty Miller and Justin Watson to throw to.

If anyone doubts why we should re-sign him, please move along
We can run block anyone and JW just carves up every team we play
TO’s be damned, get this kid a new deal and a real running game
The C and RG got owned all day…
Even though, we need a stronger starter at RB – I’d try to get David Johnson over here, a new RT and at least one depth C/G candidate with talent to develop
December 15th, 2019 at 7:40 pm
Winston has 900+ yards and 9 TDs in the last two weeks.
If he repeated that, he’d be right at Manning’s record.
That is, of course, ridiculous production and won’t happen – but Winston does have a legit chance to keep that NFL lead for the season. Hopefully Godwin, or by a miracle Evans, makes it back. Having Perriman and… uh, who.. as your starters is going to be an issue. But maybe, finally, the Bucs listen to me and put OJ at WR at finish out the season. Would be a good test of his skills in any case – he’s bigger and faster than Evans so I think he could play WR, and what a huge mismatch he’d be outside.
December 15th, 2019 at 7:40 pm
Soft ? The Falcons just beat the 49ers, and the Texans beat Tennessee, who beat us.
December 15th, 2019 at 7:40 pm
Can’t run block anymore
December 15th, 2019 at 7:41 pm
Definitely harder without Godwin not too (assuming he’s out for the rest of the year), but all he really needs is 250/game it’s possible.
These last 2 games will both be tough though… Houston can play, and divisional games can always be tough (plus Atlanta just beat SF at he last second)
Either way, go Bucs!

Let’s be honest…..we flat can’t run the ball…..win or lose…..ahead or behind…..way ahead or way behind…..Jameis will get his yards if he has to throw screens all day and an occasional pass to Perriman & Watson.
December 15th, 2019 at 7:50 pm
Congrats, Jameis
But lets not kid ourselves, turnovers impact win/losses more than passing yards.
December 15th, 2019 at 7:50 pm
Dare Ogunbowale is a great route runner, he could fill in at WR if needed.
December 15th, 2019 at 7:55 pm
Beating up on tomato cans.
How many wins vs teams w/ winning records?
Winston also leads the NFL in TOs, correct?
December 15th, 2019 at 7:55 pm
Jean Lafitte – Actually having the 31st ranked scoring defense is what impacts the W/L column the most when you have the 3rd highest scoring offense in the NFL.
December 15th, 2019 at 7:57 pm
I guess this feat doesn’t matter since all Jamies yards are garbage stats huh haters

What Jameis is doing is NOT easy. The reality is that a running game makes the QB position so much easier and to top that off the Bucs are running a complex and aggressive passing system.
This Bucs offense is not QB friendly by any stretch and Jameis is doing what many QBs cannot.
December 15th, 2019 at 8:02 pm
Rodmunch
Watch what Evans did to Tennessee earlier this year. Howard is not getting close to it. Not even when he was in Alabama.
December 15th, 2019 at 8:03 pm
Winston will get $30+ million a year, but it’s all about guaranteed money. Goff’s deal was insane in that $110+ million is guaranteed. Wentz only has $66-million guaranteed.
I think the Bucs and Winston will end up around $60m guaranteed – but if he keeps this run up through the end of the year, it’s going to cost more than that.
December 15th, 2019 at 8:03 pm
That being said, I Hope Jameis and his agent are not overly cocky come contract negotiations. He has to understand that the Bucs won’t win if he takes a super rich deal and the turnover problem will certainly provide some leverage for the Bucs,
December 15th, 2019 at 8:04 pm
Jameis has an advantage over Dak. The Bucs have no running game. The Cowboys had over 200 yards rushing today, so Dak didn’t have to throw it as much. My money’s on Jameis over the last two games, and I think he easily breaks the 5,000 yd mark.

December 15th, 2019 at 8:10 pm
He is 427 yards short. lol
December 15th, 2019 at 8:10 pm
This is all why Winston should’ve been extended last season. My posts sis is so then but now you will have to pay. #1 in yards and #1 in Tds won’t come cheap.
December 15th, 2019 at 8:10 pm
Tbbucs3 – The Bucs offense is very QB friendly, so long as you’re not a slave to QB rating and care more about scoring points than the turnover column. This offense, like Dirk’s, is basically a variation of the Air Coryell offense, except it’s missing the power running game part. But compare Winston’s stats to the greatest Air Coryell QB ever, Dan Fouts, and Winston is outplaying him at an incredible rate. Of course, as everyone will say, it’s a different era – but if turnovers were the top thing in football then the Bucs would just run a west coast offense and sign Derek Carr this offseason after he’s cut by the Raiders. Then they could average 17 points a game and finish 3-13.
December 15th, 2019 at 8:12 pm
I kinda like the guy.
December 15th, 2019 at 8:12 pm
He has one more good game vs Houston and your looking at $30 mil per.
December 15th, 2019 at 8:18 pm
Tnew – I agree with you, he’s set every single offensive record and only an idiot would think having a top offense is why you’re losing when you year in, year out, have a defense ranked in the 30s and an awful kicking game.
Said the same thing last year, and actually the year before as well, lock up Winston on the cheap while you can. That window has closed, but the Bucs still need to lock him up as he’s only going to get better and at just 25 still isn’t even in his prime yet.
December 15th, 2019 at 8:19 pm
It matters to the Texas Buccaneers Fan Association to break the 5000 yard mark.
December 15th, 2019 at 8:24 pm
League leading passer and we get to complain about getting snubbed from the ProBowl!! Love it.
December 15th, 2019 at 8:25 pm
Rod
First of all the the Bucs have no running game which puts the defense at an advantage knowing they can game plan primarily against the pass. And secondly,
Bruce Arians offenses aren’t traditionally not QB friendly with a HIGHLY aggressive downfield passing attack. There’s a reason that the only QBs who can run BAs system are all time greats like Rothlisberger, Manning, Palmer and Luck. You think BAs offense is just plug and play? Not at all.
And I’m not as concerned about Jameis ints as long as he keeps getting production, but you also can’t ignore the turnover problem as ints in a BA offense are way more likely than Ints in let’s say a Matt LaFleur scheme.
December 15th, 2019 at 8:25 pm
Spend every available resource towards making the defense a consistent 10 unit in points allowed, and the running game wont matter.
We already average 30 points a game! With a defense we’re contenders! The one major need on offense that needs to be addressed is a young stud RT to replace Dotson, a tackle who was literally fingered by Arians for not being able to run block at the owners breakfast.
I’m confident in Rojos growth. He still has a lot of room for improvement but he is a talented young player. If he can make the same type of leap next year that he made this year compared to his rookie year, he’ll be a dynamic playmaker for us.
Sign Jameis to a multiyear deal + Keep building the defense + Replace Dotson = Competing for a Lombardi! Go Bucs!
Also if we have the cap room for it I’d be down to sign Kareem Hunt.

Limiting interceptions and fumbles are still a very important part of playing the QB position and you can’t ignore that.
And that’s coming from someone who says all the time that we need to ease up on JW turnovers. He has to cut those down.
December 15th, 2019 at 8:30 pm
Jameis has had a (Hero) complex since being drafted, thinking he has to carry the team and make every throw. He thought that because unfortunatley it was true. Worst defense, kicking, and running game for the 5 years he has been here. Now that our defense is starting to click we are on a roll. Major concerns still in the running game and too many key players(Godwin, Barrett, JPP, Suh, Nasib) will want new deals. If we can sign Winston to a reasonable contract with clauses incase of off field issues or a meltdown I’m all for it. A major offseason ahead for Light.
December 15th, 2019 at 8:32 pm
Has a lead on yardage and is within striking distance of TDs lead. “Let’s get rid of him” or “I think he should get franchise tagged.” -Bucs fans
Fan base is terrible man. This guy needs to be locked up long term. Picks or no picks. Let him walk and watch him carry a team to the playoffs for years.
December 15th, 2019 at 8:36 pm
If all it took was a broken thumb, perhaps somebody could have fixed that at the start of the season.
Just sayin’…
December 15th, 2019 at 8:43 pm
Oh yeah and from this point on I think Jameis should wear 2 gloves from now on! Doesnt effect his accuracy and only serves to improve ball security.
December 15th, 2019 at 8:44 pm
Tbbucs3 – What I wrote wasn’t at all a criticism, it’s more about those obsessed with INT stats. They’re comparing what the Bucs are doing against a bunch of west coast offenses that don’t throw deep. Winston has been the top deep throwing QB in the NFL since he was drafted. If you throw deep more than anyone, you’re going to have more INTs than anyone. You’re also, hopefully, going to have a ton of big plays. Check on both marks.
If the Bucs want to fire Arians and want to go back to the Mike Shula 15 points a game era, we could do that, resign Mike Glennon and limit turnovers – and win 2 games a year.
December 15th, 2019 at 8:46 pm
Where’s the jameis poll ? It’s now sign him to multi year.
December 15th, 2019 at 8:49 pm
The Bucs need to give Jamies a long term contract asap.
December 15th, 2019 at 8:50 pm

they made the SB on their rookie contract….
JW will get 25mil per year…
GO BUCS
December 15th, 2019 at 8:50 pm
I actually think Winston is improving with the turnovers here in the last few weeks. Yes I know the 3 last week looks bad but none I don’t think we’re from poor decisions. It’s the poor decisions that bother me.
Most his recent INTs was from bad reads. Mostly from LBs dropping. Those are much easier to correct then bad decisions.
There was a sack he took in the 2nd quarter that shows better decision. The announcers mentioned it. Yeah I thought he could of avoided that sack with a throw away or maybe a scamper but taking the sack didn’t kill us……..Next play TD.
Another huge factor is the fumbles are gone. He protects the football better and the fumbles are not a thing anymore.
People just look at the numbers and say same ol Winston. But I don’t think thats true and I think he will get better and better as he gains experience in this offense……..en route to leading us to a division crown next year!!!
GO BUCS!!
December 15th, 2019 at 8:50 pm
Rod- I think your confusing what I mean by the term “QB friendly”.
I agree with you that BAs agressive style of offense is more effective than a dink and dunk west coast scheme.
What I mean by QB friendly is is this offense easy for a QB to run as opposed to other systems? Heck no. And naturally ints will be higher in this offense but he still has to cut those down and how can we do that? Run the football! See David Johnson with Palmer in 2015.

Very interested game coming up against Texans. No Evans. No Godwin.
What will the game plan be ?
December 15th, 2019 at 9:02 pm
Tbbucs3 – Yeah it’s just a terminology difference, to me a QB friendly system is a system that tells the QB to go out there and throw the ball around, and to care more about making plays than worrying about turnovers.
Although, as far as learning the system goes, I really don’t know if this is a harder offense to learn as opposed to someone like Gruden who has 4000 plays for getting 5 yards on 3rd and 7.
December 15th, 2019 at 9:04 pm
Bajito…..Now I want to know what your hate level is for Jason Licht?
I gotta think just finding us Shaq Barrett has gotta drop it some percent.
December 15th, 2019 at 9:05 pm
If Godwin, Evans and Miller are all out, I plead to the Bucs coaches, play OJ outside at WR. Just give him a simple route tree. Brate, Hudson and the Canadian can handle TE for a game or two.
December 15th, 2019 at 9:06 pm
Is Hyman our #2 WR?
December 15th, 2019 at 9:09 pm
Maybe they can line Ogunbowale up as a WR. I saw him line up wide today. Run a nice route and made a catch too.
December 15th, 2019 at 9:25 pm
Winston’s been sacked 43 times to Prescott’s 18. Cut those in half and you will definitely reduce the turnovers. Imagine what Winston could do with a Brady like pocket and just a decent running game. So sure up the Oline and fix the the secondary and they are gonna win a lot of games in the next decade.
December 15th, 2019 at 9:32 pm
Next week is the real test. The only one of the last 6 games against a winning team. Which Jameis will show up?
December 15th, 2019 at 10:06 pm
i still can’t believe people want to wash their hands of JW. I can think of at least 10 teams who have not had a qb no where near the caliber of JW for the past 15 years! This includes the entire history of the Bucs.
Titans, Panthers, Cardinals, Browns, Vikings, Bills, Bears, Redskins, Jaguars, Dolphins, Bengals and I’m sure an argument could be made for the 49ers and Rams.
I think he would consistently be a top 5 quarter back in the league if he had some resemblance of a running game and a top 12-15 defense.
December 15th, 2019 at 10:35 pm
If Jameis plays well the next two games and limits his buffoonery, I will start to believe again. I’ve been burned too many times by this cat, but I’m keeping an open mind. 😮

Next week will tell the tale for Jameis. Unfortunately, if he fails, his fans will say it was because he had nobody to throw to and his scrub WRs can’t run routes. Don’t worry, I got your excuses ready in case you need em. I’m interested in the VH3 factor too, you know he wants to snag one and maybe take it to the house.
Let’s see how it pans out. Right now, if we improve the team around him, we can weather his guaranteed TOs. But, can we afford to have him and the required pieces on D?
The main signings have to be Jameis, Shaq, and JPP. I won’t be sad to see the others go, although getting Nassib back would be nice. And we need a legit RB1 and RT either through the draft or FA.
December 16th, 2019 at 4:32 am
Rod Munch … “Actually having the 31st ranked scoring defense is what impacts the W/L column the most when you have the 3rd highest scoring offense in the NFL.”
You do recognize how skewed that argument is, right Rod? The Bucs’ defense has now DIRECTLY contributed 3 Pick-6 & 2 FRs … 35 points … to the offense’s total. And many of the other 20 takeaways have resulted in very short fields for the offense. So the Bucs’ DEFENSE contributed a LOT to that “3rd highest scoring offense in the NFL” you mentioned.
On the other side of the coin however, Jameis now has thrown 5 Pick-6’s … 35 points … that got tagged to, oh ya, the Bucs’ DEFENSE. Not to mention that many of the Bucs’ OFFENSE’s OTHER 28 GIVEAWAYS resulted in short fields for the Bucs’ DEFENSE (and thus some points were unavoidable?). Hmmm, MAYBE the Bucs’ OFFENSE had a lot to do with our “31st ranked scoring defense”? Nah, couldn’t be.
The bigger consideration though Rod is that from the defense’s position, 2019 is really the tale of two halfs. Bucs’ defense allowed 31.5 PPG for the 1st 8 games, and now 24.3 PPG allowed for these last 6 games. That despite the fact that the OFFENSE’s giveaways/game actually INCREASED from 2.25 average per game in the 1st 8 games to 2.5 for these last 6 games. Our significant defensive improvement bodes very well for the future IMO, providing we don’t start all over again this off-season.
What’s unfortunate IMO is that the Bucs put so much money into our offense that we couldn’t afford veteran leadership in the Secondary (unless you consider VHIII a veteran of course). Thus we had to bite the bullet during the first half season while our extremely young & inexperienced Secondary matured. Of course, we couldn’t afford a decent running game either. But hey, why quibble.
December 16th, 2019 at 4:46 am
Lambchop … “Right now, if we improve the team around him, we can weather his guaranteed TOs. But, can we afford to have him and the required pieces on D?”
Spot on regarding improving the team around Jameis (as well as improving the defense). And yes I’m convinced that we can afford to keep Jameis AND even IMPROVE the defense as well as the offense. But it’ll be extremely tight. It looks like we’ll have very close to $210 mil in salary Cap to work with for 2020 (after our carryover is added in). With that amount, we could afford to allocate $85-$90 mil to our defense and bring back JPP, Shaq, Suh, Nassib plus several other FAs (like Mincey). S/Ts only costs a tad over $4 mil, so the rest could be used to pay Jameis & improve the offense.
Doing well in the draft will be critical (once again). OLine – DLine – RB – OLine – whatever after that is still my preference.
December 16th, 2019 at 5:46 am
