Still Planning
December 12th, 2019Yesterday, Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians said “the plan” is for Sunday to have Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, to play in Detroit.
As we all know, Jameis fractured his thumb during a two-minute drill in Sunday’s win over the Colts. He couldn’t start the second half but only missed one possession and returned to lead the Bucs to a come-from-behind win.
Unlike yesterday, today Jameis was throwing in practice. The catch is, he wasn’t throwing a football but a tennis ball. In his weekly press conference earlier today, Bucs offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich reiterated the plan is for Jameis to play, but Leftwich doesn’t know if he will play.
“If he can grip the ball and play and hold it well, he will play,” Leftwich said. “I don’t think he is in that much pain. He is just working through it trying to get there.”
Unless Jameis banged his thumb again after the initial hit, Joe isn’t sure how a thumb can get worse with essentially a week to heal after he played with the injury without noticeable ill effects.

Jameis could very well end up leading the league in YDs and TDs.
For all the people on the ” Get rid of him ” bandwagon, that doesn’t bode well for you.
Yes I’m gonna throw more stats at you and I don’t care.
Peyton Manning averaged 20 picks a season for his 1st 5 years.
AVERAGED.
THEN, it dropped to 10 and he got a handle on it.
With a new system of vertical down field passing schemes, I still have loads of hope for Winston.
Let’s get 2 more O Lineman and Harris or Swift or Taylor etc. and see what happens next year.

It’s really about the swelling at this point. Is it effecting his ability to grip.

I 100% agree with you Billy_45

If Mr. Excitement, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston played behind NE’s Oline, in NE’s offense, he would put up 47pts/game easily
December 12th, 2019 at 2:04 pm
Watch Brady….he gets to stand in a spot for like 5 seconds on every snap
December 12th, 2019 at 2:33 pm
Howard Cosell–
Unlike many who post here, like the mendacious cretins that alter stats for their own benefit or the idiot that says the Glazers are cheap when the salary cap is maxed, you and Billy appear to have a firm grasp of the term oft referred as “common sense.”
You are no ineffable dullard, but you might want to consider an upgrade to that god-awful toupee.
December 12th, 2019 at 2:35 pm
Billy_45…great post. Totally agree.
December 12th, 2019 at 2:39 pm
I don’t know, the thumb seems critical to holding, guiding and throwing the football. Hate to see Jameis get it smacked and then miss the final games.
December 12th, 2019 at 2:43 pm
I can’t imagine Jameis not playing for one simple reason – we haven’t signed another QB. We aren’t going into Detroit dressing Ryan Griffin as our only QB.
December 12th, 2019 at 2:50 pm
They could always re-sign Testeverde
December 12th, 2019 at 2:51 pm
LOL “Come from behind win” When a QB throws a pick on his first pass, coupled with TWO more it is usually a ‘come from behind win’.
December 12th, 2019 at 2:53 pm
GREAT! I’m more than positive after the second pick he throws this weekend he’ll make the excuse of his finger and bench himself due to injury…the guy has amazing talent but history shows giving the ball away you just won’t have much success in the league!
December 12th, 2019 at 2:57 pm
Oh an for all the stat lovers and comparisons to Peyton. The difference is Peyton was winning games *GO CHECK HIS WINNING PERCENTAGE*and going to the playoffs! Jamies has losing attached to his name. Don’t get me wrong idc what stats show, if my BUCS are winning nothing matters but hey as long as Jamies is leading the league in stats playoffs and a winning organization doesn’t matter *sarcasm btw lol
December 12th, 2019 at 3:04 pm
Jameis has thrown 0 int in 39% of his games, almost the same as Big Ben’s career @ 42%.
Peyton Manning’s first 5 years 27% of games without a INT.
Favre first 5 years 37.5% games without a pick.
Now, not saying Jameis IS the same as these players but these stats at least show that great QBs throw picks in most of their games. This isn’t an unusual phenomenon. For the most part these guys had very good scoring defenses which directly helped propel them to wins and to greatness.

Hey Joe……….don’t know if you caught this or not but if you didn’t you might want to check this out

December 12th, 2019 at 3:39 pm
New nickname:
Jameis Spot-Ya-Two-TD’s Winston
Let it stick.
December 12th, 2019 at 3:49 pm
JW will win a Superbowl , but will it be in Tampa? Hmmmmmm.
December 12th, 2019 at 3:53 pm
Me. Entertainment Tonight (Uber crotch grabbing) jameis Winston aka Mr. turnovers … aka only quarterback in the NFL with 23 INTs including 8 pick 6s aka Mr. Expect a fumble … aka Mr. eye squinting before he throws a pick sucks
December 12th, 2019 at 3:55 pm
Aka Bucs QB of the future bwahahahaha
December 12th, 2019 at 3:57 pm
Jameis excuse for his picks was given to him by Arians … Arians huddles with coaches after the pick 6 … “ jameis were gonna send you to the locker room … your thumb has a fracture… just go along with it because I’m out of excuses for you when this game ends” jameis: that’s a great idea coach
December 12th, 2019 at 4:02 pm
Joe
The first 3-4 days after the injury it gets worse as a natural progression of the inflammation involved. Aggressive therapy can then help decrease the swelling and pain quicker. Fracture don’t heal in 7 days.
CONSULTATION FEE: $50.00
JOE’S DISCOUNT: $50.00

I wonder how many interceptions ole crabby claus is going to gift detroit this sunday…..hmmmm
December 12th, 2019 at 4:40 pm
no way JW plays Sunday. bring on RG!!!!!!!!!!!!!
December 12th, 2019 at 5:30 pm
If they are planning on resigning Jameis, they should sit him. Let him be ready so he can spend the off-season with a QB whisperer. He needs to practice good mechanics until it becomes muscle memory.
On top of that we really do need to see if Ryan Griffin can translate himself from pre-sesaon play. He is a solid worker and has quick reads and releases, maybe Jameis has been afraid to see him play.
Only one way to find out, let him play the last three. It’s not like it will keep the Bucs from the playoffs, that ship has already sailed.
December 12th, 2019 at 5:41 pm
Jameis is so good, he spots the other team 17 points and still beats them, with a broken thumb.
December 12th, 2019 at 6:16 pm
Winston is not Peyton Manning for crying out loud — outside of Tampa, virtually no one would want Winston as their starting QB
Manning won lots of football games in his first 5 years as a pro — 3 trips to the playoffs
December 12th, 2019 at 6:36 pm
That broken thumb MUST be due to poor coaching by the old. fat, washed up, game has passed him by BA and his crappy staff….at least that’s what some of the trolling, whining naysayers on this board will say! 😉
December 12th, 2019 at 6:37 pm
LOL SB that’s hilarious!
@Dreghost and @EEK-
what was Indy’s defense ranked those first 5 years?
How about their running game?
(Hint: Defense was top-20 every year except one. Rushing was top-10 every year, including having the #1 rusher in the league for 2 of those years).
Football is a team sport in case your forgot :-0

I just listened to an interview with Suh and to press conferences from Bowles and Leftwich. These people are saying some of the same things that they’ve been saying all season. I did hear one or two new things. In general they are not blowing hot air or lying at all I think.
Also I want to mention the job I see that the sports science and the conditioning people are doing. It seems to me we are getting all our guys back on the field quicker than in past years after injuries. (I will look at this closer after the season is over.)
My understanding is that it is NOT trivial to have a “mere” crack in the thumb of the throwing hand for a quarterback. I will be impressed if Jameis can start and play decently. (Wouldn’t it be strange if he were to have a good game with no interceptions or other turnovers this week?)
In BA I trust!

Dullard? Munch is that you? You’re just an anywho away…
December 13th, 2019 at 5:21 am
Jimbo,
If you could choose a finger to suffer a fracture, as a QB, every QB would choose the thumb. Obviously, we’re not talking ideal scenario. Rather what’s the best of a bad situation.
The reason is when throwing you need all 4 finger to not only grip the ball but to spin it. The thumb merely secures the ball , the fingers roll the ball.
I’m not aware of any specific details being released by the team so the severity and location is at this point unknown. Any guessing is just that, and more likely than not , it won’t be remotely accurate.
A flexible brace , a shot of T, and good ole tape is more than sufficient to get winston on the field. I’d be concerned about how winston is able to adjust how he handles the ball particularly in the loading phase and then as he scrambles. When winston scrambles his ball handling is noting short of horrific with a perfectly fine thumb. I hope the coaches stress him to the point of breaking down his form in practice to its lowest possible level. Rather see if he can think his way thru this injury.

At least Jameis didn’t hurt his thumb sticking it up MeSean Jackson butt like Fitz did…
