Arians Punts Question On Jameis’ Future
December 4th, 2019Head coach Bucco Bruce Arians was asked today whether he would endorse Jameis Winston as the Buccaneers’ quarterback of the future if he were to sit down this week for a meeting with Bucs ownership and the subject arose.
“I’m going to pass on that one. I’m going to wait til the end of December,” Arians replied to JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman.
“There’s been really, really good and really really bad.”
Arians went on to say he’ll let the season play out and address it then.
Certainly, Arians had a lot of ways he could have answered that question. He chose to take the direct route — which indirectly puts a load of pressure on Jameis over the final four games of his rookie contract.
December 4th, 2019 at 3:41 pm
The right answer and decision.
December 4th, 2019 at 3:43 pm
Joe, in your opinion and basing on your previous knowledge of this sport. Is this bad thing for JW? Wouldn’t Bruce already know if he wanted him for next year? If they aren’t sure now, a hot streak should not be used as a deciding factor.
Really can’t speak to what is good or bad for Jameis. Likely, though, Arians told the Glazers (and Jameis) when he was hired that he’d give Jameis a clean slate and a year to withhold judgment until it’s done.–Joe
December 4th, 2019 at 3:50 pm
Dump Jameis. Franchise tag Barrett. Draft qb
Can’t pay Winston 22 million and keep our other good players
December 4th, 2019 at 3:52 pm
Arians is usually full of BS from saying the secondary is fixed, to saying he’s ecstatic with the job Leftwich has done to excusing Jameis of many turnovers but I’m glad he didn’t BS us on this.
This franchise can’t afford to make a 25-27 million mistake with the Qb
We all know how badly Jameis played when under pressure to perform, see how he played after watching Fitz steal his job and how he can’t handle a competent backup being on the roster. So it’ll be interesting to see how he ha does under pressure now
December 4th, 2019 at 3:54 pm
This is obviously VERY BAD for Jameis.
He would never say such a thing unless he, Licht, and ownership have discussed what’s next for the team.
It’s a Salary Cap League and there’s no getting around that. They know keeping Jameis will cost a ton and so it’s only worth doing if they are 100% sure he’s worth the cap hit and commitment.
Arians has always been a very STRATEGIC coach. You just know the turnovers drive him mad. Turnovers lose football games, period. Starting Field Position for opposing teams (if a net better position than your own team) is a leading factor for losing games.
It sounds to me like Winston is GONE. Which would make me and many other Bucs fans very happy.
However… I’m a bit SURPRISED to hear him say these things and have it obviously pointing in the “let him walk” direction. I thought this organization would be dumb enough to just give him a huge guaranteed contract and extend him.
INCONSISTENT PLAY is the opposite of disciplined, strategic football.
Arians is no dummy.
December 4th, 2019 at 3:55 pm
Yep, i was watching it live….really kind of telling since he self admits he speaks the truth and doesnt sugar coat things.
Interesting. But if we do end up drafting a QB, I’ll take Hurts in the 2nd!
December 4th, 2019 at 3:56 pm
The Bucs have won 3 of their last 4 games (only loss was to New Orleans). The defense has played much better despite there being 3 rookies among the LB’s and the defensive backfield. Jameis has played better also. Up until now, Jameis has been number 4 among the NFC South QB’s but with QB “problems” at Atlanta and Carolina maybe he’s number 2 now. Let’s wait and see how he performs during the last 4 games of the season.
December 4th, 2019 at 3:58 pm
Sounds like he hasn’t quite made up his mind.
Let’s not pretend the only factor is if Bruce wants him back. You still need to have the cap to build a solid team around him and that’s assuming he even wants to come back here.
December 4th, 2019 at 3:59 pm
That’s not a convincing endorsement for sure. It leaves the door wide open for even more speculation. This is testimony that even Arians might be wavering on keeping Jameis. If this coach was willing to die on the sword he would have been emphatic about bringing Jameis back
December 4th, 2019 at 4:01 pm
Seminole Bill,
Those “3 out of last 4 wins” the Bucs have had were against:
Arizona Cardinals (3-8-1)
Atlanta Falcons (3-9)
Jacksonville Jaguars (4-8)
Those 3 Bucs victories were against teams that are THE WORST IN THE NFL.
So it’s not exactly a great accomplishment.
December 4th, 2019 at 4:05 pm
Draft Fromm or hurts in the second. Let’s get to work. Can’t risk our future on JW. Too much money. Sign a veteran game manager qb ala Brad Johnson. Actually mariota fits the Arians offense better than JW. Glazers would never allow that without sh&t in their face
December 4th, 2019 at 4:09 pm
“Gump and BA has 2 big decisions this offseason
Barrett and Winston which means tough negotiations with
Drew Rosenhaus and Joel Segal
they are going to need all the leverage (negatives) they can get and telling the world JW3 is coming back for a long time as TB QB will not be for their best interest”
Kobe Faker
December 4th, 2019 at 4:12 pm
HE IS NOT A 25-30 MILLION $ QB………PERIOD
sign him for 8mil with incentives or let him walk …. he will be somebody elses problem …draft a qb … best man wins …… manage salary cap …. build the ol and dl …….
December 4th, 2019 at 4:18 pm
The perfect answer to keep the media from freaking out, as if he would have said, “Duh, we’re not letting Jameis go”, Arians knows Rick Stroud or some other goof from the TB Times would write a piece ripping him.
BRUCE KNOWS THE SCORE.
JAMEIS WILL GET PAID!
December 4th, 2019 at 4:22 pm
Wow, Arians was pretty candid there, but I still believe the tag is in the bag. It does seem a lot more likely that we won’t make the same dumba$$ mistake the Rams made when they gave Jared Goff a huge contract he in no way deserved. I’d like to keep Jameis as a backup once his tag expires at 3-4 million a year and let him be a cheerleader for Jalen Hurts after next year(dude is fun to watch), but it’s probably best to move on. Besides, if Mike Glennon can get 16+ million per year, some foolish gm (hope it’s not ours) will surely throw that much at Jameis.
December 4th, 2019 at 4:26 pm
I’d resign the guy now and if Arians doesn’t want him I’d boot Arians. Jameis has had some ups and downs. But the man wants to and will be a good starter in this league. To kick him to the curb at this point in his career would be foolish.
December 4th, 2019 at 4:27 pm
BA is letting FAMOUS know ..you got four games to make me say yes, it’s as simple as that! I would sign Colin K. Then ready myself for the draft…O/Linman and D/Lineman !!! GO BUCS!!!
December 4th, 2019 at 4:28 pm
The Bucs won’t have to break the bank to keep Jamies. Only QB’s with playoff appearances and Super Bowl runs will get that. They could easily do a two or three year deal with some guaranteed money upfront without being stuck with a multi million dollar deal. Jamies understands he has something to prove I would think Jamies might fall into the same scenario as Cousins in Minnesota. He is only 25 and certainly hasn’t hit his prime yet so to me he is worth keeping based on his potential. One thing is for sure a contract for JPP and Shaq Barrett are top priority for 2020.
December 4th, 2019 at 4:28 pm
Sounds to me like Arians is almost ready to move on from Jameis. I’m not sure if anything but 8-8 or 9-7 keeps Jameis here. I count the Giants game as a win as far as Jameis is concerned. If Gay makes an extra point we would be looking at 9-7 or 10-6 at the least. I do respect the fact that Arians didn’t go all in on Jameis, even though it may be a ploy to get Jameis cheaper if he can get a 4-5 year extension for less by not worshiping the ground he walks on. Pay to keep JPP happy (he is not replaceable without overpaying someone else not as good). Barret should be resigned or franchised. Lock Godwin up before he hits free agency. Draft the best cover corner you can in the 1st and draft a qb in the second. Foles will be available cheaper than Jameis if we don’t resign him. Go Bucs!
December 4th, 2019 at 4:29 pm
LOL…what knucklehead asked that question ?
December 4th, 2019 at 4:29 pm
“The Glaser boyband is a sneaky group
remember they quietly announced Jason Gumps 5year extension after 6 months later
Kobe wouldnt doubt we dont know about JWs contract until we suddenly realize that fully dressed Bryon Leftwich is not only OC/playcaller but also the backup QB because we are in salary cap hell”
Kobe Faker
December 4th, 2019 at 4:33 pm
If I’m Jameis there is not a chance in heck I’m signing anything with this team and that includes the Franchise Tag.
December 4th, 2019 at 4:33 pm
Bruce comments doesn’t say anything. I wonder what will be the asking price for Le’Veon bell. I do think Bruce will looking a RB. Maybe send brate and a 4 or 5 rounder.
December 4th, 2019 at 4:35 pm
Licht and Bruce will let the Jameis situation to the very end. Let Jameis are his value. Then maybe offer him a extension. 15-18 M a year with 15-20M guarantee for 3-4 yrs. but the priority for them will be d line, Godwin
December 4th, 2019 at 4:36 pm
Hmm interesting idea there with the incentives heavy deal. Maybe Winston would agree to a short term $20M/yr deal with heavy incentives based on say turnovers? Basically give him this year’s salary with an opportunity to earn the $30M he wants but only if he cleans up the turnovers that have plagued his career.
I’m a fan of the “I will tolerate you until I can replace you” line of thinking and I think we should keep Winston until we know we have a QB worthy of replacement. Then draft the best QB available Rnd 2 as insurance if Jameis has no improvement of year 2 under BA. Otherwise, we take a complete gamble rolling the dice on a medicre FA QB or an unknown rookie.
December 4th, 2019 at 4:37 pm
Anyone who thinks it’s a lock, or even favorable right now, that Winston is coming back is waaayyyy off base. The key point here is Winston is done at the end of December. Got that? Clean slate with Arians? Uh huh. A little. The totality of Winston with the Bucs is embarassment, records in the wrong categories MORE than the good ones, lack of development, and loss of a fan base. Not all Winston, but much is on Winston. A glowing football record (NOT “potential”) for the season WAS the ONLY hope Winston had to be a Buc next year, much less a starting QB ANYWHERE. He’s not done it. His BEST hope is a shorter term contract as a bridge QB–he will never be the face of this franchise again.
December 4th, 2019 at 4:38 pm
He is gone dummies. We should have been playing Ryan after the London game. We would at least see what he has to offer.
December 4th, 2019 at 4:40 pm
Gotta love Arians, sounds like take what we offer or walk in my opinion
December 4th, 2019 at 4:40 pm
If I were Jamies……..
If you were JayMiss ndog you’d never leave the house.
December 4th, 2019 at 4:43 pm
MAN…
Some of you don’t get how the NFL works…
The Bucs will NOT sign Winston to any sort of multi-year deal (regardless of price) unless they truly BELIEVE IN HIM. And if they truly BELIEVE IN HIM, then he’ll get paid big money.
The Franchise Tag is making less and less sense at this point. If you believe in the guy, offer him that $100M++ 4-5 year guaranteed deal that it he and his agents will absolutely required. If NOT…
There’s ZERO benefit to giving Winston the franchise tag (similar to what happened with Washington and Cousins).
You either COMMIT to a QB when his rookie deal is ending (like Goff) or you let him walk (like Mariota) and you move in another direction.
December 4th, 2019 at 4:45 pm
Ndog
Your comments proves you care more for Jameis than you do for the team.
You need to seriously consider pulling your nose out of Jameis’s @ss.
December 4th, 2019 at 4:46 pm
Why would Arians play all his cards now and not keep the pressure on Winston to perform now? Im 100% positive Winston will be here next year.
December 4th, 2019 at 4:47 pm
Nick Foles….is a great example of how trying to make too much of a small sample of data while ignoring the body of work can blow up your organization. Foles had a great little run….but Foles has been a back up for the majority of his career for a reason. He’s like Fitzpatrick, he’s good until he isn’t. That’s Winston….he looks the part until he doesn’t. Five years of ups and downs….even in this little “win streak” you still don’t know who’s going to show up that week. That’s not a $25 million per year QB.
December 4th, 2019 at 4:47 pm
Winston is building the second half of this season. So far 3-1 not too bad. 4 more to go. If he can give us a 5-3, 6-2……..7-1!!!!! Finish he is absolutely gonna look like our franchise guy.
Then the narritive will be that it took him a half of a season to get this offense down……Which will be sorta true but a large part of the wins will be from the team playing better around Winston.
Either way Winston will proove he can lead this team to wins. So you resing JPP then Shaq & Suh and give Winston a long-term deal then get ready to contend for the next little while!!!
Enjoy it BUC fans!!
December 4th, 2019 at 4:50 pm
I think Bucco Bruce gave the only answer he could give at this point. He NEEDS these last 4 games to see how Jameis does with a decent defense behind him. IF he poops the bed with multiple turnovers but the defense plays well, it’ll be obvious that Jameis won’t get us to the promised land. But IF Jameis does well AND the defense plays well, that’ll give BA a chance to see what he’s really got in this team for next year. Good chance in that latter scenario that the Bucs will offer Jameis a contract, but for a team-friendly salary. We can’t let him break the bank and still compete for a playoff spot.
Only way we can make a run for it in 2020 & 2021 if IF EVERYONE cooperates from a salary Cap perspective, much like the Patriots’ players do. Their Top-5 players, including Brady, are only making a tad over $61 mil, as opposed to the Rams Top-5 making $109 mil. That results in much better BALANCE in the middle of their roster (resulting in better depth?). Interestingly, Brady himself is making $21.5 mil this year, although he has a dead Cap of $32.3 mil (Patriots play some interesting games with the salary Cap).
December 4th, 2019 at 4:51 pm
If we keep Jameis and he sh|ts the bed again next season it’s not beyond belief that you Jameis jock sniffers will change your names too.
December 4th, 2019 at 4:52 pm
@Bobby M,
EXACTLY. You hit the nail on the head.
This recent “win streak” (3 of last 4) aside from it being all 3 and 4 win teams, doesn’t erase all the CHAOS from Arian’s mind of the rest of the season when Winston’s crapped the bed.
The Bucs had no realistic chance at the playoffs after the first half of the season was over. Arians knows that and you can bet was pissed about it.
December 4th, 2019 at 4:55 pm
Jimmy Jack,
You do realize those 3 wins were against the Cardinals/Falcons/Jags who two of which are 3-win teams and the Jags are a 4-win team right? (Worst teams in the NFL.)
And in the latest of the wins… JAMEIS DID NOTHING. 17 points from the Offense. Very little production. If it wasn’t for the D creating turnovers on the Jags first 3 possessions, we definitely lose that guy. The win had very little to do with Winston and certainly wasn’t an ‘impressive’ game to add to his resume or anything.
December 4th, 2019 at 4:55 pm
Why on earth would he answer it any other way?….He could pull a Jerry Jones and say that Winston would be a quarterback in the NFL next year.
As for what to do…..Joe has been so convincing in his support for Andy Dalton that I’m starting to like the idea. (sarcasm)
December 4th, 2019 at 4:57 pm
Defense Rules,
I disagree.
In my opinion, Arians has already made up his mind that he wants to move on without Winston running this team.
This is YEAR #5 for Winston. Plenty of tape on him that Arians has watched. And Arians has now coached him for 12 regular season games. He pretty much knows what he has in Winston at this point.
December 4th, 2019 at 5:01 pm
Bandit Allow me to quote the King one this one……from after the Falcons game.
It was the best football he saw this team play in…….Three……Years!!!!
And I agree & last week was more of the same. I am sorry if you don’t recgonize a good football team when you see one but I due and the Bucs are playing good football right now.
I have said it before and will repeat it for you…..The Bucs still got good teams left on the schedule to proove it to the naysayers…….Now set back and enjoy the rest of the season. It’ll be fun!!!
GO BUCS!!!
December 4th, 2019 at 5:04 pm
His non-answer answer speaks volumes.
December 4th, 2019 at 5:06 pm
JimmyJack,
It was a reference to the young Defense finally playing a complete game well (and Winston not completely giving the game away with turnovers.)
If you don’t ‘get’ that you should stop watching football.
This is definitely NOT a good football team (with current roster and overall play) and there is no one in the world outside of biased Bucs fans like you that actually believe that.
December 4th, 2019 at 5:07 pm
Bruce will not make the decision. He said … I will give my honest opinion.
So it will be up to Licht.
But also remember Bruce said in part of taking the job was is coaches were available and Jameis.
December 4th, 2019 at 5:13 pm
Bandit did you miss some two of them TD passes to Godwin in Atlanta or are you just choosing to ingorne them? Or is it option 3 that you don’t know those are elite throws?
It’s one of the three buddy so tell me which one it is. If it option 3 you are wronger then Rod Munch bro and there more elite passes them them 2……not just in the last few games but all season. Those two just stick out to me………Don’t make me call Ndog to come in here to recall each and every other elite throw made.
December 4th, 2019 at 5:14 pm
This is either a statement of more bs from bruce or to see if jameis can actually handle adversity. Colts defense is decent compared to past few weeks lets see what jameis shows up
December 4th, 2019 at 5:16 pm
But as I said we got good teams on our schedule to proove it to you. Shame you don’t know what a good football team looks like when you see it.
December 4th, 2019 at 5:17 pm
Oh and another thing it’s not just biased Buc fans saying it either guy. Just go to the home page and read up on the articles Joe’s got for us. Plenty of sources and quotes from no Bucs fans.
December 4th, 2019 at 5:18 pm
2 years, (18 mill per), then still draft Hurts in the 2nd and not rush him.
December 4th, 2019 at 5:18 pm
Licht is only still here because BA demanded it of the Glazers and his five year contract extension should tell everyone which way the Glazers want this to work out. If I was a betting man I would lean toward Winston still being under center next year.
December 4th, 2019 at 5:19 pm
Jean Lafitte Says:
December 4th, 2019 at 4:45 pm
Ndog
Your comments proves you care more for Jameis than you do for the team.
You need to seriously consider pulling your nose out of Jameis’s @ss.
Hows me stating what I would do if I was him, relate to my fandom of the team? Again another CLUELESS post.
December 4th, 2019 at 5:21 pm
Btw, that was a great question from Ira, AWESOME job Ira! I was wondering who that was when i heard it.
December 4th, 2019 at 5:22 pm
It’s really an easy decision.
Do you keep America’s Turnover Machine for $25-27 M next year or sign your entire D line / Edge rushers for maybe $10 – 15M more?
Win with D, a running game and a lower priced QB who doesn’t regularly give up the farm.
Peace, out
December 4th, 2019 at 5:23 pm
Oh and the King is not a Bucs fan either. He’s just a guy who covers the Bucs and has been covering the NFL for probably about 75 years.
I’m betting he k ows what good football teams look like.
December 4th, 2019 at 5:26 pm
NPRSageBoy……..Your argument is one that gets brought up a lot that has a massive flaw.
Ya still gotta pay somebody to be your QB. So you gonna pay Phillip Rivers or Eli or whoever that money which means your not saving anything.
December 4th, 2019 at 5:27 pm
Kobe Faker said it best. Why would you divulge this information when contract negotiations are happening, or will soon be happening?
December 4th, 2019 at 5:39 pm
MT hit the nail on the head. The haters are of course assuming that this is definitive proof that Winston won’t be back. Of course that isn’t the case. 25% of this season remains and he wants to see how he finishes up the season. His statement means nothing and even if he had made up his mind right now the answer would be the same. There is no way in hell Arians wants to start over with some rookie that will struggle. JW is top 5 in many of the positive stats and that isn’t easy to replace. I will be SHOCKED if JW isn’t back next year.
December 4th, 2019 at 5:44 pm
This is part and parcel for how Arians has been treating this team all season. Build up when the team is losing, be critical when things are going better.
December 4th, 2019 at 5:45 pm
What does Phillp Rivers have the Winston doesn’t? He’s won seasons and leads his team, and he hasn’t embarassed his community and owners with horrid off field behavior. He would bring hope where so many Bucs fans have long moved on after Winston’s disgusting show on and off the field. This isn’t about potential and long term deals.
December 4th, 2019 at 5:46 pm
What makes all of you experts think that Jameis, wants to come back????
December 4th, 2019 at 5:50 pm
Who knows man. No reason to make a decision now. Pretty much agree with Kobe / Defense Rule’s perceptions on this.
December 4th, 2019 at 5:59 pm
Those 2 passed to Godwin in Atlanta were, let’s say fortunate.
The long one was thrown into double coverage and gets defended or picked most of the time.
The second pass was thrown way behind him and he’s lucky he didn’t break his neck going back for it, he did and Wow.
But please don’t act like the Soiled Messiah did anything great. His receiver made it happen.
JayMiss still sucks.
Don’t be fooled!
December 4th, 2019 at 6:03 pm
I’m very surprised he would be so forthcoming with regards to the really really bad play by Jay-Miss. He didn’t have to add that part , but he did. That says a lot!
December 4th, 2019 at 6:05 pm
LMAO, Doosh even claims Winston’s TD bombs were really picks and he just go lucky. No you’re not a hater at all lol.
December 4th, 2019 at 6:07 pm
I understand Jameis has turnover issues. But we can’t run the football. The defense has finally started to play football and we are winning. The only time this offense moves the ball is when Jameis makes elite down the field throws. Even against the Jags he was throwing to guys that were covered. Perriman ball on the sidelines was a perfect throw. Out route to OJ. List goes on. I watch other games and see actual open receivers usually because of a running game. We switch QBs if he can’t make throws like the one to Godwin in Atlanta this team won’t move the football. Run game is not good enough. We had probably the worst d in the league except for last few weeks. I think it’s more about the D. They don’t need to be the steel curtain but a top 20 D would be helpful.
December 4th, 2019 at 6:07 pm
What do you expect him to say? If Arians said “Yes,” the next question would be “Why doesn’t he have a long term deal then?” If Arians said “Yes,” but let Jameis walk, he’s a liar. I believe Jameis will be the QB next season.
Look at it from this perspective.
The Bucs won’t be in position to draft a QB in round 1. Jake Fromm is going to return to Georgia for his senior season. If you watch the games, you’d see he’s nothing more than a game manager. Jalen Hurts needs a Lamar Jackson style system. Arians never had a QB like him.
Name the free agent QB who’s the upgrade over Winston? Teddy Bridgewater is not all that. Before you bring up his record with the Saints, keep in mind that team is better in the trenches, running back, and offensive coaching. Are you willing to give him 20 plus million.
Ryan Tannehill is who he is and the Titans are going to keep him.
Phillip Rivers is shot.
What’s the plan if you let Jameis go?
December 4th, 2019 at 6:10 pm
Putting pressure on him might lead to alot of TO’S, but I’m goping for TD’S.
December 4th, 2019 at 6:10 pm
*hoping
December 4th, 2019 at 6:11 pm
Doosh- suiting name. You could also call yourself DelusionaLaRue.
Jameis put that ball in the only place it could be put. If he put it in front it’s picked, too far behind and it’s picked.
You shouldn’t be in here making stuff up when other people actually watch the games.
December 4th, 2019 at 6:11 pm
Big unaddressed question is what other teams have an interest? I have seen nothing so far, and the owners haven’t offered a contract, which indicates they are not fearful Jameis will jump ship. Interesting, as always…
December 4th, 2019 at 6:26 pm
TSmitty3000
Guess your plan is to continue losing with Jameis instead of trying anyone new.
December 4th, 2019 at 6:33 pm
3 out of 4 wins against teams jockeying for draft position. Yep, we’re on a roll. Just go ahead and sign Jameis to a 4 year multi million dollar contract. It’s something the Bucs would do anyway. Worst franchise in the history of NFL football. Why look for answers when we are conditioned to mediocracy.
December 4th, 2019 at 6:36 pm
Jean the problem with that is that we are winning right now. The Bucs might just fool around and finish 9-7 too.
Point is you can look at it two ways. Easily could look at the current trend and it’s we can continue winning with Winston.
Whether you like it or not it’s fair to say that.
December 4th, 2019 at 6:39 pm
Nah you guys keep asking those same questions every week and I’d be vague as well. Some will some wont like it so no need to talk about it now.
He knows it’s not his decision and if the Glazers are smart they would have made that known from day one. He can give his assessment but ultimately if Winston resigns it will be because the owners want it.
I think the major strike against him is this franchise needs a star at quarterback to get national attention and winston has zero marketability.
December 4th, 2019 at 6:40 pm
And Jean don’t worry about this 3of4. If it don’t impress you then the team will just have to show you over their last 4 games where the competition is tougher.
Also teams don’t jockey for draft slots. That’s literally not what’s happening on Sundays. It’s only something goofy bloggers and spineless fans talk about.
December 4th, 2019 at 6:44 pm
Either way this coaching staff has come in and are now starting to impress me. We gonna finish strong to put the cherry on top and will have a nice outlook heading into next year.
I do want Winston back but I will stand by whatever choice Bruce make. I trust he knows what he’s doing at the QB position. I won’t put my own opinion against the wishes of the team. I’ll support em either way. And if they eff up andake the wrong choice Ill let em know about with y’all!!
December 4th, 2019 at 6:47 pm
@Joe it must be nice to have this much to write about. The Bucs haven’t been this interesting since…Oh lord, Schiano and MRSA were running the sidelines and Doug Martin was tiptoeing on NFL records.
Arians said what every fan is thinking: Jameis, we want you to show enough improvement to earn our trust. Four games left. The defense is fixed. Show us you can win games.
December 4th, 2019 at 6:48 pm
The really, really bad FAR out weigh the really good… 66 games and the really good is so few and far in between…
Jabroni isn’t reliable, dependable or worth build a team around because his foolishness causes games to be lost…
Let’s go after a winner at QB and put this losing decade plus behind us!
December 4th, 2019 at 6:49 pm
7 out of our last 8 games are against teams with a total of 27 wins 43 losses and 1 tie. Except for Houston the rest are jockeying for the draft. If Jameis has turned the corner in 2 weeks then he should easily dispose of Indy and Houston who are the only legit competition left.
December 4th, 2019 at 6:51 pm
Jameis is 13-14 when he doesn’t throw an Interception.
This is a TEAM issue not a turnover issue.
Btw who tf makes the argument about what teams we beat? Someone with an agenda and a bias, that’s who.
December 4th, 2019 at 6:54 pm

spineless fans? … jerk-off
December 4th, 2019 at 7:01 pm
Joe, this is for all the haters. The haters are obviously not longtime fans, if they were I hope they were crying about the wretched QB this team has suffered throughout its existence. When a guy with 4 and a half seasons under his belt is your franchise leader in TD passes….that tells you a lot. Winston is a turnover machine. I watch every game as I’m sure most everyone on this site and reading this does. I bet if you looked at all his picks just hitting his receivers first and then being picked off, I bet you could shave 20 off. BUT NOT MY POINT. The point is, players have personalities. His dna is a slinger, he was like that at FSU even when he knew they were going to win, he’s a slinger now, and he’s a survival style QB. Favre and Big Ben are two more recents thst come to mind. Those guys throw or threw a nice amount of picks but they always had pretty good defenses. It’s like you say, he has what you can’t teach. He has size, strength, escapability in the pocket, a good arm, he’s hungry, he works, he leads, and he has a short memory when he turns the ball over. A perfect example is against the falcons. He threw 2 picks…..imagine what happened when the D finally showed up, he played magnificent. Where else do the Bucs think they can find this talent, this young and this seasoned. Dude is 25 and will soon have 5 years under his belt. This team is about to be in its prime and we can not waste 2-3 years grooming these rooks. Alla the Jets, Chicago, Washington, Miami, etc. for every Lamar Jackson or Pat Mahomes, there are 15 Jammarcus Russell’s. Old man BA better really think this one through because the only FA I see that could possibly be equal or slightly better is Teddy. But do we have the Offense to dink and dunk like NO? Kamara is a great safety net. We have nothing that resembles that at all. I get so tired of all these JW haters man. Remember when the offense couldn’t EVEN MOVE THE BALL!?? With JW’s turnovers we should legitimately still be 7-5. (NY and TN) so if we end the season on a high to decent note, why would you not try and bring back these core guys including JW and see what he and this staff can do in year 2. Oh and I’d like for anyone else to look up a QB who’s had 3 coaches in 5 years and tell me their numbers.
December 4th, 2019 at 7:05 pm
I hate people that ask questions just to put people in a hole.
December 4th, 2019 at 7:05 pm
I am liking Arians more and more. I think he gave the perfect answer about Jameis staying or going. Don’t give the media no ammo to start speculating. The team look to be starting to player a little bit better let’s not spoil the momentum. We all know what the media does. Love the media but sometimes they can be almost like a cancer to a team
December 4th, 2019 at 7:06 pm
What are you talking about jockeying for draft slots? That simply is not happening. These teams are trying to win.
Just like Jacksonville last week. They put in their backup QB to try and mount a comeback.
And why you think the Colts are jockeying for draft slots? Don’t know their record but did hear a couple guys on the radio say they are fighting for their playoff lifes……just like we are as a matter of fact.
December 4th, 2019 at 7:09 pm
Steve excellent point……The media would have a field day if Arians answer that question definitively. Either way. You’re right it could really kill the momentum.
December 4th, 2019 at 7:11 pm
At what price would it take to get Jameis back next year? He’s worth $8 million plus incentives.
The production (inconsistency and turnovers) doesn’t match the dollars it would take to franchise him.
Might have to cut bait.
We could get more production from the QB position next year (not as many yards or TDs-but much less turnovers) and win by paying salary cap for defense!
Enough of the mirage that we have a franchise QB. We have a guy whose just good enough to get your hopes up. I don’t believe it’s possible to win with all the turnovers and fumbles (even the recovered ones). Too many sacks. Takes too long to throw.
December 4th, 2019 at 7:14 pm
I think Arian’s Non Committal attitude is a Ploy, to try and get Jameis cheaper.
One way or the other, I see Jameis back next year, unless he totally implodes in our remaining games.
Either we sign him, or we Tag him, but one way or another, he is back next year.
December 4th, 2019 at 7:16 pm
Jameis will be back Winston Bashers. Can’t wait for the comments section when he is resigned! Woooo hoooo that’s gonna be a truly great day!
December 4th, 2019 at 7:23 pm
^^^^^^^^^^^^^you’ll be changing your name middle of next season
December 4th, 2019 at 7:31 pm
Just be quiet lil bro. You really got to stop acting like you know stuff.
Did you tell these guys your really a Saints fan yet?
December 4th, 2019 at 7:47 pm
Go check out Spotrac.. they keep up with all of the contracts, then weight performance vs all other contracts at a position. They are usually in the ball park. They have Winston currently valued at $25.9 M per year. If he had no turnover issues, a defense and a running game, his value would be $10M more, but he does so he is devalued accordingly.
If the Bucs can sign him in the low $20’s with incentives escalating and easy outs if he doesn’t make performance incentives then its a bargain.
Otherwise, its time to get a new coach, a new GM, sign a journeyman at 15M and start a total rebuild.
My REAL question is does Arians even want to coach anymore or is this year his last ride. Has he decided he was correct in retiring the first time. While I really like his psychology, he has made some profound mistakes this season.
December 4th, 2019 at 7:49 pm
NDOG,
I’m curious what teams you think would actually sign Winston to a big contract and make him their starter even IF Winston “decided not to resign with the Bucs” like you are saying he shouldn’t. ???
WHAT TEAMS?
Anytime that would sign Winston in free agency would be paying a MINIMUM of a 3 year, $22M++ deal if he leaves the Bucs (by choice or if Tampa lets him walk).
What teams are going to take that gamble?
You can stop your pipedream of him going to the Patriots. There’s no way in hell ‘Salary Cap Master’ Belichick is going to roll the dice on a multi-year deal for the most inconsistent QB in the NFL. And if Arians the “QB Whisperer” couldn’t fix Winston, Belichick is not stupid to think HE will automatically make the difference.
I honestly don’t know what teams would sign Winston to a big contract. I can’t think of a single one.
Winston’s financial life depends on TAMPA BAY. Either the Bucs tag him or give him a long term huge deal, or he’s IN DEEP TROUBLE and maybe on his way out of the league at 25.
December 4th, 2019 at 7:50 pm
Speculation is useless. Play the season out.
December 4th, 2019 at 7:50 pm
Glazer boys fired Dungy over his ball control offense and stout defense philosophy. They want an offensive team not a defensive team. Whether some will acknowledge or not Winston will be under center next year and I believe for many years to come.
December 4th, 2019 at 7:51 pm
Man some of you really draw conclusions from face value lol. Just think a little more about this. Bruce is notorious for manipulating his press conferences to light fires under people, like he did oj. If he said, ya jameis is doing great, what’s the benefit from that? Nothing. He didn’t even criticize him to risk damaging his ego. There’s nothing here that would negatively impact Jamieis and nothing that would give him a pass. This is the perfect answer to light a fire, however.
December 4th, 2019 at 7:55 pm
Bandit
Bengals, jaguars, titans, skins. None of them are committed to anyone and their starters are certainly not looking like a long term answer.
You seriously do not believe nobody will pay jameis, do you?
December 4th, 2019 at 7:57 pm
JimmyJack … ‘Either way this coaching staff has come in and are now starting to impress me.’ Interesting that you say that JimmyJack, because I was thinking the same thing Sunday, although I’m still limiting it to the DEFENSIVE & S/T coaches.
The offensive coaches? Not so much. The Bucs’ offense has given the ball away 28 times. We’ve now managed to tie the Giants for the MOST giveaways in the NFL this year. Yuck. Our OLine is at best average, our running game is below average, and our receiving group, beyond 2 bonafide stars, is meh (ME13 & Godwin are now accounting for 2/3 of our team’s passing yardage, despite the fact that Jameis has thrown to TWELVE other players this season, NOT counting Vita Vea). And don’t get me started about how many of the offense’s points have come from the DEFENSE’s 21 takeaways, either directly (28 points) or indirectly because the defense gave them the ball back in good field position.
Todd Bowles & his assistant coaches thoroughly impress me. Transforming such a young Secondary into what we’ve seen in these last several games was awesome IMO. He’s got this defense believing in itself & playing solid smashmouth football. I love it.
December 4th, 2019 at 8:21 pm
Arians realizes Jameis’ brilliance. He’s not showing his hand at all here. Jameis will get a long term deal.
December 4th, 2019 at 8:33 pm
Any coach who wants to be taken seriously would resign Winston. If they do resign him they’re just there to collect a check.
December 4th, 2019 at 8:36 pm
Yes, we beat 3 teams with 3-4 wins. But we lost to the Giants this year who are currently a 2 win team. If we played them now with all of our starters healthy, we would win by double figures. This team has definitely improved to the point that we beat teams we should beat. The next step os to beat good teams. It will happen, have faith.
December 4th, 2019 at 8:37 pm
would love to see Bucs pick up capable FA potential third tier QB, a proven backup QB and draft one as well
It will cost some dough but less than spending $20-25M on Winston (1 really for good and 2 really’s for bad)
Result will be the same with the benefit of optimism/hope and possible upside
December 4th, 2019 at 8:38 pm
Jameis is not brilliant. He’s average because he has tons of yards, but more turnovers than anyone. Can’t win with turnovers and it kills the team. The D is left out to dry most times, sans the four pick 6’s.
It just losses me off that it’s ok for this team to suck balls and be 2-7, now they want to play better only to still miss the playoffs. How bout these well-paid dudes show up and win so we can have meaningful football in December.
Really aggravating to suck so bad each year and play better later. Start the season bette already
That’s not all on Jameis but how can we overcome the losing with the turnovers?.
December 4th, 2019 at 8:43 pm
This is basic. Arians doesn’t even know if he is here at that time to make that decision
If the owners came out and said ” Arians and his coaching staff will be here” you would of got your answer from Arians.
December 4th, 2019 at 8:43 pm
Defense Rules……Mostly agree with all you said.
But I’m pretty happy with the offense. Mostly when you look at where they could be headed.
Of course the turnovers gotta go down that’s a given. But I do love the potential. They have proven prolifict at moving the ball and what I like the most is our redzona abilities. Its to the point over the last few games where every time we get it down there I expect them to score.
That’s pretty exciting to me. I expect them to get better and better with more experience running the same plays. I’m pretty high on the potential.
I do agree about the running game and I’m quite sure our coaching is not happy(despite what they say) about the production there and will focus to upgrade on the off-season. Remember Bruce Arians has been a running back coach before.
Just don’t think we had the means to make major upgrades in the run game last year because of the switch ton3-4 defense and having little pieces to start with………Guessing they address both OL and backfield this off-season and if they know what their doing we could have a very dynamic offense next year.
December 4th, 2019 at 8:48 pm
StevenK
Did you know the Bucs are still 12-14 when JW doesn’t have a turnover?
The common denominator is when we play solid defense we have more of a chance winning.
The defense let Trubisky have 6 tds. That’s worse than any JW performances. Combined.
We lost to 9 back up QBs in the process
December 4th, 2019 at 8:51 pm
SteveK— 13-14 when he doesn’t throw a single INT.
It is a TEAM issue, not a turnover issue. Dang man, Jameis throws 2 early picks vs Atl but we win because our TEAM picked it up.
We CAN win with Jameis but we CANT win without a defense. It’s all been proven and displayed in front of all of your eyes but you are so hung up on Jameis. Jameis is the tree that is blocking your view of the forest. The Bucs have sucked before him, during him, and most likely after him.
How bout we build a TEAM around him. I know whose job that is.,.
December 4th, 2019 at 8:52 pm
Dang I was typing that up, thanks Lamarcus!
December 4th, 2019 at 8:56 pm
All I’m saying is if they do move on they better not bring in Cam Newton or Phillip Rivers or I might be done with my season tickets cause those dudes suck out loud and I can’t stand either one of them. I just want to win and those guys would destroy this team.
December 4th, 2019 at 8:58 pm
That would so be the Bucs though they FINALLY fix the defense then start over at QB right when we finally get it all together at once. Tell me that wouldn’t be classic Bucs.
December 4th, 2019 at 8:59 pm
Accountability by everyone involved and simple honesty by the head coach.
Can you say “culture change”? (A rhetorical question.)
In BA I trust.
December 4th, 2019 at 9:04 pm
NDog how about Eli or Tannyhill or Dalton? Those are our best choices. And Bruce came out of retirement to make title runs. That’s not happening with a rookie QB. It’s just not. If you want a rookie QB then you better tell us who your getting to coach him next year cause it won’t be Bruce.
A few dark horse choices that wouldn’t surprise me to see traded are Stafford or Carr.
December 4th, 2019 at 9:10 pm
I think NPUPPY needs to look up “exclusive franchise tag” before he says jameis shouldn’t sign that contract. He’ll be out of the league for the year like Ball was last year. And he calls other posters clueless about football smh
December 4th, 2019 at 9:11 pm
For all of the negative remarks coming from supposed to be Bucs fans , why not just enjoy what we have going on now! Forget the past, it’s about now! We all have made some bad choices in our lives! Everyone deserves another chance, we all can talk about how the team looks now versus what we use to look like! At lease we are moving into a positive direction! When was the last time we had good players on both sides of the ball, that really wanted to win for the organization? Just speaking on JW he’s the starting qb for our team, and if the head coach can have faith in himm and continue to coach and lead this team why can’t we all just follow his lead and continue to support our team!!!! Peco’s Bucs
December 4th, 2019 at 9:21 pm
Oh I know exactly what it means but I also know he has until week 6 to sign it and if he does at that point how exactly can this team afford to then pay him, another QB, Shaq, JPP, Nassib, LVD, Suh, etc..
Answer they couldn’t so we would be SCREWED smart guy. Now get off my lawn. So again we can add you to the list of the CLUELESS!!!!
December 4th, 2019 at 9:25 pm
Eli did you say Eli!!!?!?!?!?!?!? He would get killed in this offense. Tannehill is playing well right now BUT keep in mind they have a GREAT run game setting up is play action and o think it safe to say he’s not getting that here. Dalton well Dalton got benched for Ryan Finley, enough said.
December 4th, 2019 at 9:33 pm
If we get rid of Jamies we will be right back where we started. And that’s scoring 10 to 17 points a game mark my words. And we are still going to lose. Look at the Gaints with their rookie quarterback. That’s going to be us next year mark my words. It’s not about being a Jamies fan. Some of us just remember the days of not being able to score points and now we are ranked number 3 in offense with no running game and every lost is Jamies fault ok he’s just the scapegoat. And Jimmy Jack you said Elie man please now every body know that you hate Jamies and it may be because he’s black to bring up Elie. Lol lol lol
December 4th, 2019 at 9:34 pm
Jameis’ INTs went up this year as a result of a new offense which doesn’t play to his strengths and constantly asks him to make dangerous throws.
If you really look closer at his stats you can see he averaged about 1 INT per game during his career, prior to Leftwich. That’s NOT great, but if you want Brett Favre type throws, you have to be able to live with Brett Favre type INTs.
In BL’s offense, Winston’s INT rate has doubled. What’s more is the Bucs could (and probably should) be sitting at 7-5 instead of 5-7 right now. Now ask yourself, would you be willing to live with a 22 TD – 10 INT QB with a 7-5 record for another year?
My answer would be ABSOLUTELY unless you can bring in a proven great QB to take his place–I would not gamble again in the draft to bring in a rookie QB. We had an unprecedented run of talented rookie QBs the past few years (with a few busts thrown in) which I don’t think will be replicated anytime soon. Tua isn’t the answer unless you want a smaller version of Mariota (the injured version). Burrows & everyone else is a big ? mark.
December 4th, 2019 at 9:35 pm
If Jameis 1 of 1 isn’t fired after the season then I think it’s a foregone conclusion that Jameis will be back. Licht will never admit he was wrong.
December 4th, 2019 at 9:43 pm
Anyways I was not advocating Eli or none of them just wanted to throw out the names of available QBs.
Hear a lot of people post the question who you gonna replace Winston with and lots of people shooting it down. But it’s a fair question when you consider the options.
Hey Brady is a free agent though haha or maybe we can release Winston and pray Andrew Luck unretires to come take a beating behind our awesome OL.
December 4th, 2019 at 9:51 pm
This is all just theater. The decision to keep Winston has already been made.
The Bucs know that they can’t announce it yet or half the fanbade will be livid.
They will announce it a week or 2 after the season ends to make it look like they went through the process and made a Well thought out decision.
Then Arians will coach another year and retire and we will be stuck with winston .
It’s A Bucs Life ……..
December 4th, 2019 at 9:56 pm
Why do people keep comparing him to Farve? Farve wasn’t this inaccurate all the time and threw better. Why does this fanbase have so many deluded FSU homers.
December 4th, 2019 at 9:59 pm
Also you guys do realize Farve was playing in an era where defensive backs were allowed to play defensive back. Interceptions were much more common back then compared to today. In today’s NFL there is no excuse for a 5 year vet to be throwing this many picks. Then again the Deluded FSU homers are going to say less then half of them are his fault.
December 4th, 2019 at 10:01 pm
Maybe he meant what he said, lets see the rest of the year? let us at least stay 2nd in the division for crying out loud…
December 4th, 2019 at 10:04 pm
Anyone that wants Jameis back is a punk, fsu fan or clueless.
Which are you?
December 4th, 2019 at 10:16 pm
I think BA said the responsible thing, because no matter what, you have to evaluate the available QBs in the league along with your QB. He’s inconsistent. We can sugar coat a lot of his turnovers, but his ball placement, decision making has been inconsistent. That is without a doubt. Without the star WRs, he would look even worse. That’s a fact.
But, I’m not against resigning him to a team friendly deal or incentive laden deal. He’s shown glimpses of excellent play. But, are BA and BL at the point in their careers (one foot out and one foot in) willing to stake their reputation and career on the chance that they can get Jameis to play consistently well?
Jameis has done this before. Crap the bed most of a season to show promise in meaningless games against crappy opponents. Where is he in big games? Don’t talk to me about his yards and TDs, because it takes 2 to tango. And I seriously believe a LOT of competent QBs in the league would have those numbers with our offense. Even with the crappy running game and blocking. Because those guys are inconsistent too. Sometimes they really show up. So, that tells me it’s coaching and tweaking the players a little.
Last game told me how good Alex Cappa is. His loss was felt on that line.
December 4th, 2019 at 10:17 pm
some of you have to remember when posting the difference between:
Resign
Re-sign…
I want Jameis to resign..like go away and take all FSU homers with him…
December 4th, 2019 at 10:18 pm
go suck a dk t-rex punk troll
Anyways, i still want to set up a plan to either keep or move on…franchise tag or a 2 yr prove it deal, but also draft a QB this year, (Hurts) and ease him into the nfl. If JW agrees, awesome, if not, ok we still move on. If in those 2 years he matures into smarter decision making, and gets more consistent and we’re winning, then he gets the big contract.
December 4th, 2019 at 10:25 pm
Max=punk
Cool. Thanks for letting us all know.
Team before any player. Period.
December 4th, 2019 at 10:28 pm
Three things:
1. I loved all of the discussion here so far today.
2. Yeah, it was Ira, “The Sage”, who asked asked BA the question today.
My question then becomes “How many of you fans/haters actually listen to Arians’ press conferences? (For those who don’t … You know who you are. No response is needed to this, unless you just gotta’!)
3. I pose a possible scenario now.
Suppose the Saints actually win another Super Bowl in February. Drew Brees gets to retire and go out on top. Teddy Bridgewater promptly becomes Brees’ heir apparent.
In this case where else are we going to find a decent non-rookie replacement for Jamesi Winston then?
December 4th, 2019 at 10:28 pm
3 stats prove Jameis Winston’s worth:
The Bucs are 4-8 when he has zero turnovers, a pathetic winning percentage
The Bucs are 13-14 when he throws zero interceptions, a sub .500 record
Winston has 3 more career losses (12 to 9) with a passer rating over 100 than Tom Brady who’s been playing for 2 decades.
The only person in here saying anything that makes any sense is Alaskan – it’s a team issue, not a turnover issue.
________________________
If anyone here thinks this is Arians’ tipping his hand AT ALL, then you’re a naive dumbarse. Especially if you’re a certain someone who believes that just because we have two bada$s receivers we should be – and I quote – “DESTROYING teams by 21+ every week!”
What a childish understanding of the game of football. It’s really a dam shame that the Bucs have to deal with such an inept fanbase ON TOP of being the worst sports franchise in north american history…….. which of course is also Jameis Winston’s fault as well.
December 4th, 2019 at 10:34 pm
So let me get this straight. We have a QB who is going to be 26 years old, going into his prime, and in his first 5 years is on pace to have the second most passing yards in NFL history. So first consider those facts, then consider you are blaming a rookie QB that came into a disaster franchise then was basically told go win games with a HORRIFIC defense, limited at best running game, and a average at best olinemen. What did you expect to happen to a player that has won everywhere he has ever been? Of course he was going to try to be Superman and he clearly doesn’t care about stats cause he is going to do whatever he can to win games and if that means forcing balls downfield when the entire world knows he has to then so be it, cause dumping the ball down when you are getting blown out isn’t going to cut it. See those interceptions count in your precious TOs #s so would you rather him just go into a shell and not push to try to win when he’s watching TD after TD after TD being scored on his defense. He wants to win and now when we appear to finally have a chance at a legit defense you don’t want to see what he could do with it? Are you flipping crazy?
December 4th, 2019 at 10:42 pm
Ndog just stop dude…. these people will never EVER look at context when applying their piss poor evaluation skills for Jameis Winston. They won’t admit that the kid was drafted in a division with 3 HOF/SB caliber qb’s at 20 years old with a defense challenging for worst-of-all-time in certain metrics year in and year out. They won’t admit Patrick mahomes was a guy drafted to a perennial playoff team that had ALEX SMITH getting MVP votes…. They won’t admit that Deshaun Watson was drafted to a Texans team that took garbage quarterbacks like Ryan Mallet & Brian Hoyer to the playoffs multiple years in a row… They’ll ALWAYS bring up the W-L record but they won’t EVER address the pathetic win percentage when he has zero interceptions or turnovers period…. they won’t EVER have a response for why he has more career losses with a passer rating over 100 than TOM BRADY who’s been playing for 20 years as opposed to about 4 1/2.
They’re too busy doing mental gymnastics and don’t understand the game of football at the deepest levels so it’s just all about surface level stats and wether or not you’re throwing interceptions. They’re also not smart enough in general to allow their opinions to change with new information, which is the baseline mark of intelligence. Nope, it’s their way or the highway and the Bucs should be a juggernaught because they have some fancy skill position players but absolute $h!t everything else for as long as we all can remember.
December 4th, 2019 at 10:51 pm
I notice some only show up for discussions when they think the topic is to trash Winston. Winston will be under center next year and for years to come.
December 4th, 2019 at 10:53 pm
Primech54
Very smart and well written post
December 4th, 2019 at 10:53 pm
101 turnovers
50 fumbles
That’s a major reason for the suckage on defense.
For the last five years, no other defense had to overcome a QB w more turnovers.
I’ll concede and think that the truth about Jameis is between the success and yards and the failures/ turnovers and suspension.
Don’t make excuses for the turnovers.
December 4th, 2019 at 10:54 pm
Freakin’ Amen PriMech!
Why can’t a T Rex make a bed?
Because they’re all dead.
December 4th, 2019 at 10:55 pm
t-rex, oh my god was the words used when i laid some big pipe into your woman last night, not punk….but then she mentioned old lil dk when she brought you up.
December 4th, 2019 at 11:08 pm
He leads the league in turnovers. It’s as simple as that, has limitless potential, if you want limitless turnovers. It is done
December 4th, 2019 at 11:09 pm
Since we’re Bucs fans, it might help to look around the league a little. The Raiders SBN site had their experts’ roundtable look at Carr. Almost all of them think Carr should be let go or at best kept around for a lame duck season to train a replacement. Are the Colts going to go into next season with Brissett? There are rumblings about Goff, Trubisky, Wentz, Keenum, Taylor, . Allen, Mariota, Newton, Foles, Haskins and two or three Broncos’ starters have already been pushed to the side.
Only a handful of teams are happy. A couple of others are too locked-in and looking for other ways to fix the problem.
Everybody else is like us.
December 4th, 2019 at 11:39 pm
SteveK you do realize when a ball is snapped poorly or too soon that goes as a fumble on the QB right? You also realize that when a QB is blind sided due to a missed block that goes as QB fumble right? So knowing that and watching that happens numerous times during our games you seriously still blame the QB for those TOs? Really man really, do you just blindly hate the guy that much????
December 4th, 2019 at 11:43 pm
Example Sunday he makes two guys miss and is STILL hit from behind while having two hands on the ball. What exactly do you want him to do, block those guys and hold the ball with his feet and hands at the same time? I mean come on man their are stats then there is reality. Watch the games bro.
December 4th, 2019 at 11:44 pm
Tampabuscsbro says,
Farve was playing in an era where defensive backs were allowed to play defensive back.
____________________________________________________
I completely agree with your premise. It appears many new fans are not aware or just playing coy, or know and don’t take it into account. It’s not a fair apples to apples comparison. I contest if Farve played under todays QB rules and WR rules he would have benefitted even more on a stellar career. That man may have thrown 4int’s but he also threw 6td’s and the last one for the win.
How many times has Jameis done that even with the most prolific WR tandem in the league?

Let’s not forget the office knows that Winston is 12-14 even with no turnovers on his part. Turnovers have not lead to losing seasons. A poor offensive line a struggling running core and a lackluster defense along with poor coaching have shown us losing seasons. Winstons turnovers are a highlight in a large paragraph of inconsistencies the front office have to wade through. If you kick any player off a team based on turnover rates alone then your probably have no business being in the front office of a professional team. We don’t need to make rash decisions based off a single stat. This isn’t one man football, this is multiple stages of areas that need work, and currently in progress.
If we had a top 5 running back who broke 1000 yards per season and was responsible for 50% of the points over the seasons would we kick him if he fumbled once per game?

Ndog has season tickets but still posts on the game day threads?
Hmmmmmm….

Ndog
some are just football fans with elemental understanding of the game. I have had many discussions with some that no not what offense we run or what is or is not play action. Just enjoy the rest of this season and watch what I believe is the coming together of the new monsters of the NFC South.

Joe OPINE………………..
lets think logically.
Jameis is Jamies. The team around him or any OB has to develop. If the last month of games is a sign that the team is improving, namely the secondary, than buc fans have to see some cautious optimism.
Now Jameis isn’t getting a payday from any of the 32 teams in 2020. Jameis, in my opinion, can be a winner on a good team. Good teams don’t need QBs, for the most part. (Denver, San Diego, Carolina, Etc could benefit from a good qb but no way they think Jameis is the answer). Jameis isn’t getting a big payday in 2020 from other teams. If Jameis wants a payday it has to come from Tampa. Tampa, if they are an improving team, has to think that developing the team is more important than wasting a high draft pick on a QB.
Our best chance of winning games at this point is to have a much better team, all around, than a young QB.
So what I am getting at is, Find a way to draft positions that we need and pick up pieces in FA. offer Jameis the minimum possible contract that will allow us to keep him and not focus on a QB in the 1st and 2nd rounds. Jameis Winston and a good team around him can be successfull. Giving Jameis a big payday when Tampa has all the bargaining power…………is stupid business.
I truly believe Jameis has no future as a starting QB with any other franchise other than Tampa. Yes someone will bring him in to compete and possibly be a starter but he is not getting a Max contract.
Be Smart Tampa…………………There has to be a reason this team has kept Ryan Griffen around and have shielded him form playing? If you see Ryan Griffen play Weeks 16-17 then you can bet that Jameis future is not with Tampa.
December 5th, 2019 at 12:01 am
Maybe this is BA’s way of applying tough love to Jameis and seeing how he responds to the pressure.
December 5th, 2019 at 12:01 am
Answer to my question:
None:
A very poor completion percentage is Jameis’s achilles heel and a major concern and I’m sure one analytic stat that will define the ” con” part of the Jameis debate, and why it should be one of main concern.
League low 60%
December 5th, 2019 at 12:05 am
…………………To continue my previous statement
HERE IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE.
the Pittsburg Steelers, The Tennessee Titans.
They are in a Playoff position as of now, why?. Not because they have a good QB its because develop their defenses and offensive lines. Both teams have QBs that are not studs just game managers.
PIttsburg is on their 3rd String QB! He is winning games because the team around him is good. There are 5 QBs in this league that can make below average teams winners: AAron Rogers, Russel Wilson, Tom brady, Drew Brees, and Pat Mahomes. Its possible LAMAR and Watson are those type of QBs but I will reserve judgement until 5 years in. That’s it 5 teams with superhero QBs the rest just need to be good enough and not turn the ball over for their teams to win.
Tampa needs to understand this. Giving big money to Jameis is just stupid. Developing the team around Jameis, or any QB, is far more important that giving a giant contract to a QB.
Be smart Tampa………..Be like Pittsburg

@Jean Laffite
>A very poor completion percentage is Jameis’s achilles heel and a major concern and I’m sure one analytic stat that will define the ” con” part of the Jameis debate, and why it should be one of main concern.
No Jean see we are the idiots that don’t understand the game of football. Jameis Winston is going to leave this team go to the Belicheats and win multiple super bowls and have a hall of fame career. Don’t actually pay any attention to his advanced and basic passing statistics with two top 5 WR’s they mean nothing it’s his receivers fault. Winston is dragging them to relevance.
December 5th, 2019 at 1:04 am
@PriMech54,
Gimme a team or coaching staff that can go to the playoffs with Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett any day. If it’s about winning, then just win. Who cares who the QB is.
Are you also saying that Houston has the best D in the league? Best OL in the league? Best running game in the league?
Cuz that’s what you seem to be implying here.
By the way, please explain/defend Jameis Winston being selfish and being a slinger knowing his defense sucks. Please explain how the QB helps the team forcing balls into double and triple coverage knowing he will get picked off and the defense….THAT horrible defense has to defend a short field.
You seem to be God around here with your immense “football knowledge”.
When you tell me that Jameis has a short memory after interceptions, I see that as a FATAL flaw. It’s irresponsible and selfish. Throwing into double, triple coverage is NOT going to win games. He has to work with his players and make drives happen. Even if it’s boring and methodical.
December 5th, 2019 at 1:15 am
Jean, Winston is asked to push the ball past the sticks more than any other quarterback in the game. The receivers often don’t even begin to branch into their breaks until about 7 or 8 yards into their depths. You can even catch Bruce Arians with a freudian slip during a press conference where he said “the receivers have to get past the first do- get into their depths” when asked about the long developing plays and Winston taking hits in the pocket. Completion percentage is one of the laziest and misleading stats in all of football. It has almost NOTHING to do with wether or not a guy is more “accurate”, but EVERYTHING to do with what said quarterback is being asked to execute. For example, if Jimmy Garoppolo was asked to be in a 4 verts scheme that is among the bottom of the league in terms of pass attempts to running backs and does not utilize their TE’s and had no running game his completion percentage would be GARBAGE (as in WAY worse than 60%) because he does not have the arm talent to make a living like that.
December 5th, 2019 at 1:18 am
lamb chop
first of all, you must have me confused because I didn’t mention anything about Winston’s “short memory”. You’re either making stuff up or trying too hard. Nor did I bring up him being “selfish” by “being a gunslinger because he knows his defense sucks” (which is hilarious, btw). AND NEVER, did I write that Houston had the best defense, offensive line & running game in the league. Boy, you’re really behind. Try reading it again.
December 5th, 2019 at 1:23 am
It’s funny, because I posted legitimate stats and provided context to my point and you still dance around it and attack a straw man even when replying DIRECTLY to my post about how people like you would NEVER have an answer for it… you can’t make this stuff up.
December 5th, 2019 at 1:28 am
Btw i’m not sure what you thought my point was, but Mahomes & Watson are both great quarterbacks. However they were drafted to very good football teams and would not have had the same success under the same circumstances Winston has been in. It’s not even arguable.
December 5th, 2019 at 1:39 am
Man the amount of A****ism coming from quite a few users in here is something to behold.
December 5th, 2019 at 1:41 am
For all the Jameis fans talking about a 13-14 record with zero INTs, I just want to get one thing straight.
So, when we lose, it’s the team’s fault. When we win, it’s because Jameis had a great game?
When is it EVER that Jameis also contributes to losing? Looks like never according to the defense displayed on here.
Please defend how Jameis stares down receivers, places the ball inaccurately many times (sometimes to the other team), he stops receivers dead in their stride with trailing balls or ill placed balls, throws into double and triple coverage, throws high enough that our WRs feel like they’re going after a tipoff in a NBA game, over throws deep passes, gets picked off on the first play of a game?
The Godwin catch that he took to the house against the Falcons where he had to reach dang near around his ankles slightly behind him is case in point. Those yards and TD were all Godwin, not Jameis.
So, you can talk all you want to defend him, but it’s meaningless if you’re not going to blame Jameis partly for losses and heap praise after praise when really it was the receiver who helped him get all those yards and TDs.
December 5th, 2019 at 1:49 am
@PriMech,
I responded, prematurely, to your post as well as another post. But, for most of Jameis’s blind faithful, you all have the same arguments. So, my point still stands.
Do you think that saying we are 13-14 when Jameis has 0 INTs paints an exact picture of what happened in those games? Because, the Giants game came down to play calling.
My point with Jameis is he is inconsistent and he has not developed like other QBs with his play. I’m not one to look at wins and losses in evaluating our QB. It’s a team effort. But, he is not playing like a 25M+/year QB.
Each and every game, I wonder which Jameis is going to show up. But, I am open minded enough to continue to watch the Jameis show for another 1-2 years with this new coaching staff and a resurrected D. But, the conundrum is, you talk about starting over with a rookie QB. Guess what? If we sign Jameis to a fat contract, we have to start all over with a DL.
I would much rather pay Shaq, Nassib, and possibly JPP (his leadership alone begs to have him back not to mention he’s still producing).
I have a QB who may or may not have played better on a better team and I have proven defensive players on a still unproven D. The choice is easy for me. If Winston wants to accept a team friendly deal, maybe on a year to year basis, then he’s my QB. Otherwise, c-ya, cuz if we have the stud D that we’re seeing as of the past 2-3 games, I can have an average QB and still win.
December 5th, 2019 at 1:50 am
Bruce is just posturing with justifiable reasoning.
I think the 2020 QB franchise tag number is over $26mil?
If the Bucs could sign Jameis to a 2-3 year deal with let’s say $30-$40mil guaranteed, leaving both parties an option to cut ties and trade if it just isn’t ever going to work here.
I’d rather do that than stroke a $26mil check for one season, then cut bait or scramble for an even larger contract if Jameis finally takes that next step to Elite Status.
I’m no hater or fan-boy, but you have to put emotion aside and realize:
• The Bucs can certainly do much worse than Winston.
• The Bucs possibly could do better but it’s not likely.
Jameis frustrates the heck out of me, but at least he truly wants to win, and he fights till the end.
Not saying he deserves top-tier money, but my god, there are so many worse QBs that have landed huge contracts and haven’t been heard of again.
// How much money did the Bears and Cardinals pay Glennon over 2-3 years?
December 5th, 2019 at 2:45 am
Some clowns here think if Jameis isn’t brought back, MAGICALLY, the offensive line, and subsequent running game/pass pro, will improve. Jameis is a byproduct of the INEPTITUDE of those two focal points. Arians is gone as soon as Winston. This is NOT a “qb friendly” system. Can’t write the blank check unless it’s Brady in his prime. Fromm is HORRIFIC and Hurts isn’t that good. I just love to hear those though. Shows how clueless some really are. You are looking at a WINLESS team (if 10 other starters are your qb) let alone those 2, 4 -year college starter, qbs. Get a grip, guys.
December 5th, 2019 at 3:16 am
PriMech54
Out of ALL the QB’s in the NFL that USES the SAME offensive scheme, Jameis RANKS LAST in completion percentage.
Is that BETTER?
December 5th, 2019 at 4:42 am
Eliot gets it.
December 5th, 2019 at 4:43 am
PriMech and July Joe don’t get it.
December 5th, 2019 at 4:59 am
We are nearing the time of the season where determinations are made to enter negotiations, or not. Unless a HC is also GM or has some other official role, they don’t generally talk about this stuff right now, even with the player. Whether Winston is, or is not (suggest latter is more than likely at this moment) being considered for contract negotiations for a lucrative deal, the HC will not be running around saying a word, particularly as value to the organization and accordingly, price enters the picture. The organization will always seek to diminish a player’s worth (and/or act indifferently) while a player needs to make a case why he’s worth more than may meet the eye. Advantage Bucs here. The liklihood is really no team is looking at Winston as the face of their franchise (that will not happen anywhere) and next starter (not any team’s likely first choice). So frankly, Winston may be have a choice of being paid lowest tier starter pay (and on a shorter term) in Tampa or be relegated to a higher paid backup somewhere else. This will fetch between 8-$15 million per year. Winston’s contract would likely have clauses, particularly related to performance, on and off the field. I don’t think anyone realistically sees his worth at more than $15 per year and a short term (three years or less) deal. Anyone who thinks Winston has value based on potential is mistaken given he is five years into it and it’s pretty clear he’s risky and is what he is.
December 5th, 2019 at 6:05 am
BYE BYE AMERICA’S GROP…….ERRRR, QUARTERBACK!!!
December 5th, 2019 at 6:34 am
It’s the right ‘non-decision’, and you can argue either side. If he wasn’t who he is, an inconsistent turnover-prone QB, he’d be signed already. That’s a FACT!
You cannot play this game going into every Sunday flipping a coin on whether or not you will have to overcome ONE player’s mishaps. No coach should have to gameplan that.
December 5th, 2019 at 6:48 am
Also VERY noteworthy…….Joe did NOT refer to this POS as “America’s QB” in this article…….wow.
December 5th, 2019 at 6:57 am
Got the usual bloviating no-brains on here. At least there are a few genuine fans who know what they’re talking about. That’s the ONLY reason I come on here. Go Bucs Sunday!!
December 5th, 2019 at 7:43 am
I see the FSU/Winston jock sniffers are out. The dude is not good. The idea that any rational team excluding the Bucs would resign this clown is laughable. Acting like Winston is asked to do more than any other QB in the league is a flat out lie. The receivers for the Bucs make circus catches routinely and put themselves in positions to get laid out. Winston stares down every receiver he throws to, fumbles a snap or looses the ball every game. The fan apathy sh!t from Buc fans is sad. Look around the league at development time for this position. It’s not 5 yrs. Sorry if you’re on Winston’s payroll and this offends you.
December 5th, 2019 at 8:13 am
Can’t we all just get along? 😀
December 5th, 2019 at 8:26 am
MTM……AMEN!!!
December 5th, 2019 at 11:04 am
@Oneilbucs,
You said: “If we get rid of Jamies we will be right back where we started. And that’s scoring 10 to 17 points a game mark my words.”
OH YEAH?
Then why didn’t that happen when Fitzpatrick played last season???
You Jameis-Homers are hilarious!
You think if Jameis leaves that somehow this STACKED Offense isn’t going to produce under another QB. Hahaha. *I* could probably throw to Evans & Godwin and rack up some yards.
December 5th, 2019 at 12:15 pm
James
December 5th, 2019 at 3:31 pm
I love the number of people in here that think they know what they’re talking about and go on rants FILLED WITH HOLES.
You guys are so stupid. Not all of you so don’t cry when I type that. There are some smart ones in here. But MTM is not one of them. Or morgus. or 813. or tmax. or jean. or bandit…
December 5th, 2019 at 4:55 pm
I agree with MadMax, if we’re going to moving on from Jameis I think taking Jalen Hurts in the 2nd round would be right QB for us. He’s mobile, fairly accurate, good deep ball, takes hits like a rb, and most important he doesn’t turn the ball over a lot.
December 5th, 2019 at 8:53 pm
Jameis’s agent will go to the Glazers with hat in hand…..because it will be his only option if he wants to be a starter next season
December 5th, 2019 at 9:14 pm
I agree with Mad Max that JH would be a great pick for QB. BTW: MTM stands for Madder Than Max.
December 5th, 2019 at 9:29 pm
Crabshak
He had the same OC for 4 years…he holds franchise records because no Buc Qb has ever gotten a second contract, and the NFL today is pass happy with all the rules in favor of the offense, but hey there’s 4 more games….
