Touchdowns Per Drives

December 6th, 2019

Bucs OC Byron Leftwich

The Bucs offense is still humming.

When the offense takes the field, there is a decent chance the Bucs will score a touchdown. This is a departure from years past when the key weapon in the Bucs’ offensive arsenal was a punter.

(Remember when former Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik signed one free agent to upgrade the team after a 10-win season to get over the hump and make the playoffs. It was a punter, who is a walking billboard for offensive failure.)

The Bucs have one of the best offenses in the NFL. So yeah, you should see touchdowns. And despite having a rotten running attack, no matter what the sell is coming from One Buc Palace, touchdowns are frequent in a mostly one-dimensional offense.

Ranked in the top-10 in touchdowns-per-drive, nearly one-fourth of Bucs’ offensive drives result in touchdowns. That’s No. 9 in the NFL, per the good people of NFL Films, compiling stats for BSPN’s “NFL Matchup.”

Imagine what this offense would be if the Bucs had a running back that defenses remotely respected?

This may be the Gator Homer in me but I think this offense could use a guy like Lamical Perine. Someone who can do it all and is tough as nails. Even the flashes we’ve seen from Ronald Jones this year haven’t been that impressive and have been far from consistent. I agree with Joe… This offense is a running back away from being deadly. There are good RBs in the draft every year at good value. Hi get one like Perine.

  2. Isaac haggins Says:

You are a Gator Homer !! Not Impressed, Sorry

  3. Bucaroni&Cheese Says:

Yeah I’m going to say Perine is not the kind of difference maker the RB room needs…probably decent 2 or 3 option, but the guys just doesn’t have boom potential to be a top 15 starter in the big boy league.

The real eye opener is the Ravens, like holy Aunt Jemima 37%?!?! That’s insane, that’s the kind of efficiency team should be looking to replicate. Maybe it’s a flash in the pan or Lamar is one of a kind, but like jeez how do you beat that?

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Can Vita Vea play both offense & defense……line him up as FB and let him carry the ball on occasion.
Actually, not kidding…..what our offense needs is a “bruiser”…….a big back that pounds the rock……OK, not Vita….but let’s go out and get one.

  5. Bucaroni&Cheese Says:

Kind of agree, we need someone with some homerun potential. Rojo can get to the second level but I don’t think he can take advantage of it. Would love a Derrick Henry type that can just play man-ball at the second level and maul some DBs to the endzone.

  6. LordCornelius Says:

    2019:

Ronald Jones – 4.8 yards per touch
Peyton Barber – 3.6 yards per touch

CmAc – 5.8 yards per touch
Kamara – 5.4 yards per touch
Derrick Henry – 5.4 yards per touch

Jones in 14+ touch games – 5.3 yards per touch.

I’m not giving up on Rojo as a solid #1 yet… There is ample evidence that when he gets involved heavily in the game plan he produces. Not only has he produced in these game scripts but it’s been pretty damn consistent / solid:

    19 touches 106 yards
    20 touches 83 yards
    20 touches 82 yards
    15 touches 121 yards
    15 touches 67 yards
    14 touches 93 yards

In the 6 games we actually used him like the #1 back; he averaged 17 touches for 92 yards from scrimmage per game. That paces for almost 1500 yards in a season.

Fire Jaspn Licht; let jameis either sign a 12-15 mil/year deal or pack sand. Build the trenches find a RB that doesnt suck which would mean get a new GM who has a clue and doesnt pass the henrys, cooks and darius guices of the world for the bs he drafts

  8. Brandon Says:

Anybody have any idea who brought all the offensive talent to Tampa? Was it the same guy who extended Lavonte David, traded for JPP, claimed Nassib, drafted Vea the beast and White the Savior, and a slew of young talented secondary players (Whitehead, C. Davis, J. Dean, Murphy-Bunting, Edwards, and J. Evans), basically discovered Shaq Barrett and swapped out McIceCream for Suh and cut the cord on the player Bucs fans clamored for on draft day, VH3? This team is on the rise, thanks to Licht. He’s made the right decisions and now that he finally was able to hire HIS coach, the future is looking good.

how many times do I have to remind you sir the fullback position is rightfully extinct…..

So Guice has had one great game as a pro… and a torn ACL… and he messed up by not taking him? Who brought all the other talent to Tampa? Did anybody else think to draft Chris Godwin? Why didn’t Mike Evans go sooner? Sammy Watkins went before him. There is a lot of talent on this team… Cappa and Marpet are going to be our starting OGs for a long time, they didn’t just find their way from Div II and III and magically appear here.

    “PATHETIC INCOMPETENT OFFENSIVE PLAYCALLER

What was that in the 2nd half

non stop running up the gut on 1st down losing yardage over and over again

    what is the running scheme

running behind Ryan Jenson does not mean running into Ryans behind

the whole 2nd half it was 3rd and long and the Jags blitzed everytime

JW3 and the Bucs offense was not stopped by the Jags but was stopped by the QB coach Intern

This is not the way to win and beat better teams

If Bruce Arians didnt scam the Glazer boyband and actually called the plays and gameplan this year LIKE WE ALL THOUGHT HE WOULD

we would be 9-3 and playoff bound

Instead Kobe Faker has started a class action against Goodell/NFL to get the Bucs into the NFC eastern division”

  12. Swampbuc Says:

The running game certainly isn’t as good as Arians and Leftwurst like to say but it’s not as bad as Joes claim either. Situationally — especially in the red zone, they’ve had some good running. They have 13 rushing touchdowns, they only had 11 all of last season. That is huge and a big reason why they are scoring more points for the yardage gained, unlike last year’s impotent red zone rushing attack.

  13. Ndog Says:

Wow below average running game and a average, at best oline, and we still are scoring TDs with the best of them. I wonder how that is possible? Hmmmm….

  14. Uncle Says:

    CLYDE EDWARDS-HELAIRE

That’s who the Bucs should be shooting for. He would be the final piece this offense needs.

  15. JP_09 Says:

Ndog, you forgot to add average QB to your list. Thank god we have elite WRs

  16. tickrdr Says:

Congrats to JW3 for throwing 26 TD passes.
84.6% of them went to Buc receivers, too!

    tickrdr

  17. Ndog Says:

Yep you’re right the WRs throw and catch the ball all by themselves. They also set the protection, scan the field, get the play from the coach relay it to their teammates and avoid pressure. You are sooooo right, you really know football.

  18. Pickgrin Says:

    More good info Lord C.

We need to see about 100 touches for Rojo over the next 4 games.

Turn him intro a workhorse for the last 4 games and let him play all 3 downs more often than not.

Lets see what we got in this kid.

My bet is that if Rojo does get that many snaps he breaks at least 3 or 4 big (25+ yard) plays and surpasses 1250 combined yards for the season.

  19. FanO’Bucs Says:

Man, if this team only had a defense!

  20. Defense Rules Says:

FanO’Bucs … Bucs made a CHOICE in 2014 when Lovie arrived: build the OFFENSE via the draft (certain irony there huh?). We invested big since then in ME13, Jameis, D Smith, Marpet, ASJ, RoJo … and those are just the 1st & 2nd rounders.

The defense took a backseat (as in 3rd row backseat) UNTIL 2016 when we drafted VHIII, Spence, Bond & Ryan Smith. Only ONE of those survives, as a backup. We did draft Justin Evans & Beckwith in 2017, and oh ya, Stevie T. Big whoop; the first 2 may never play again, and the 3rd spent most of his time on IR too.

But then in 2018 we finally figured out that our defense stunk (gee, and it ONLY took how many years?). So we drafted Vea, MJ Stewart, Davis, Whitehead & Cichy. A good haul actually, and 3 or them are bonafide starters for us. IMO 2019 was where we made our money. White, SMB, Dean & Edwards are ALL starters as ROOKIES, and Nelson may yet come on.

The fact that our defense is improving is a positive sign. But it TAKES TIME to recover from such horrific neglect. TEAM-BUILDING has been an after-thought around here for too long. BA ultimately called the shots IMO, but the one passing him the bullets was Todd Bowles. He’s THE ARCHITECT of this defense in my eyes.

  21. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Nice one tickrdr. You shouldn’t use subtle humor up here. Some of the mooks up here might get confused. Take them a few minutes to catch up. Just think if 10 of his interceptions had gone to our receivers how many more tds they would have led to!!! At least he doesn’t throw many in the redzone! The best Bucs offense ever and losers claim he’s the worst! Amazing!!!

  22. 1sparkybuc Says:

No New England, New Orleans, Atlanta, or Carolina on that top ten list. Interesting.
