No Special Tonic
November 29th, 2019Last week when the Bucs defense did its own version of “Rise Up,” and rose up to collect an absurd number of passes defended (16), Bucs defensive coordinator Todd Bowles claimed it was nothing special.
Oh, make no mistake. Bowles was a happy camper the Bucs had so many passes defended, including five each by corners Carlton Davis and Jamel Dean.
But Bowles, speaking after practice yesterday, claimed the young corners did not have fantastic games because of any special trick Bowles devised, particularly Dean.
“He puts the work in; he puts the time in; he understands what is happening,” Bowles said of Dean.
As far as developing young players, Bowles set he has no deadline. The player, Bowles noted, will tell him by his practice if he is ready to hit the field, not a calendar.
“I just know when they are ready to play, I play them,” Bowles said. “There is no set time. Some get it earlier. Some get it later.”
It could be that Dean, finally healthy, has flipped the switch. In his last three games each, Dean has had at least four passes defended. He has 13 in his last three games.

One can only hope they develop into the DBs the Bucs so desperately need. We have invested so much draft capital into the position, we cannot afford to invest more when we have so many other needs to address this offseason: Outside linebacker who EATS QBs, RT, a real RB, etc (in that order…)

Fingers are x’ed that Bowles’ defense will be a different but legendary defense like the one who won the SB. Bucs might be the clown princes of the NFL, but when their defenses rise, they are the best. Looking forward to Sunday. Go Bucs!!

Import someone like Slay or Ramsey and focus on pass rush and next year this team could be great

Did anyone else watch Matty Ice Statue last night?
Yeah he was getting heavy pressure but the guy is just ridiculously slow, prone to fumble and not very accurate. Sounds like someone we know.
My point being, don’t get to high on the DBs just yet.

This Secondary has the potential to develop into something really special. With Davis, Dean & SMB as our CBs, and Whitehead as one of the Safeties, I’m still hoping that Edwards can eventually lock down the other Safety position instead of being the Nickel. And yet there are tons of quality FA safeties who’ll be on the market this off-season. Upgrading the back-end with a veteran wouldn’t hurt.

We could have used Bowles a few years back, when we were Tennessee Ready! Maybe we would have had good corner development by the next season.
This means these guys will be ready to compete next season.

Pay a very good Safety in the off-season to help young Davis and Dean. A vet leader in the secondary is desperately needed.
