Matt Gay? Not Much To Say.

November 25th, 2019

One missed extra point in a game? It happens.

Two? Then you know it’s in the kicker’s head.

And then the next extra point gets blocked? That was a true NFL rarity seen on the field yesterday in Atlanta.

Bucs rookie kicker Matt Gay had rebounded so well after his horrible missed field goal that would have given the Bucs a win against the Giants in Week 3. That also was the last game in which Gay missed an extra point. And now Bucs kicking temporarily has returned to circus status.

No elements to blame in the Georgia Dome. Nobody to blame but Gay.

Thankfully, the lost points didn’t cost the Bucs in their blowout win. Bruce Arians said on the Buccaneers Radio Network after the game that he was relieved Gay made a 32-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter, for the sake of Gay’s confidence.

Joe’s not freaking out. Gay has shown resilience in his young career.

Let’s see what he’s got in Jacksonville next Sunday.

Matt Bryant is sitting at home growing a beer belly.

  2. ElBajito43 Says:

This guy sucks Balls but not because he is Gay…. I mean well he is GAY but I think “Trash” Licht is going K in first round……

Especially since after the ATL game we now “KNOW” Winston is the hero we needed.

Def. a Kicker will be selected at 13 overall

  3. Tampabuscsbro Says:

are we forgetting the field goal he made. you’re talking about him like he missed literally everything. Circus status would be he missed literally everything. he had an off game. a rookie is going to have an off game. Joe come on.

  4. Dapostman Says:

Pulled a wedge on the first two. I’ve done it a few times. Not a big deal.

  5. Snookman Says:

Overall he’s been good this yesr

  6. Kevinator24 Says:

Blowing this way out of proportion Joe. Like Bucs Bro said, it was an off game.

  7. SteelStudBuc Says:

Wasnt a Winston-esque failure by any stretch of the imagination:
    -3 points Gay
    -7 points Winston

  8. cmurda Says:

You know we had a good game when our biggest complaint was the kicker.

  9. Anonymous Says:

I worry a lot less about Gay than I do Winston. Winston is the guy who can’t seem to be consistent. Two pick sixes in that same SF game, right? There’s the loss right there.

  10. Bucsfanman Says:

Missing FGs is one thing. Missing XPs is inexcusable. Lets stop trying to sugarcoat it. It’s the ONLY kick that is kicked from the same exact point on the field in EVERY game. It’s the one kick that can be practiced with virtually zero variables. Between the 3 missed XPs and the 2 INTs, this game was closer than it had to be. For once, I’d like to watch a game where I don’t lose years off of my life watching a kicker kick XPs. Please!

  11. Pewter power Says:

Some you idiots have a hard on for Winston and should come ot of the closet like gay has since the giants game. Same one’s every day that even when you talk about the kicker have to mention Winston even on a win and a complete win by the entire team, go get your head checked. No one wants to heat about your Winston fetish anymore this week

  12. Mord Says:

Matt Bryant’s collection of Buc-kicker voodoo dolls is amazing

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The missed extra points are glaring because everyone expect them to be made……but as far as most games go even missing 3 extra points is like missing one FG……and that happens all the time.
I’m OK with this kid……you have to look at his entire body of work….

  14. stpetebucsfan Says:

He’s a ROOKIE. He played for the Utah Utes…not exactly under the bright lights.

Right now he’s among the least of my worries.

5 games left let’s see if yesterday is in his head. So far aside from a couple of speed bumps he’s looked good and he gives us something we haven’t had…a kicker who can blast it from the 50 yard line in…

  15. DooshLaRue Says:

It’s always a letdown when the Gay guy won’t open his mouth.

  16. Edward Williams Says:

Look at this this, the kicker haters are out of the woods. When a player sucks, fans call him out. How about praise him and the punter. Special teams haven’t got any credit this year

  17. RODNEY ALLEN Says:

I’m not worried about him hes shown resilience before n he will rebound

  18. WyldKat Says:

He asked Jobu to come, take fear from Jameis. And we saw where it went.

  19. orlbucfan Says:

The blocked extra point was not Gay’s fault. So, he missed 2 pts. Whoopie. He sure made the FGs. The punter who does kickoffs which are constant touchbacks gets no credit. He is a weapon!!!!! The ST is slowly coming together, too.

  20. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Ed

    The punter ain’t all that.

  21. Day One -76 Says:

    Stop with the Gay-Bashing.

  22. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Some of you people are the worst judges of talent I have ever seen, lol.

Matt Gay will be fine. It was a couple of extra points. Big deal. None of the best kickers in NFL history were perfect their rookie year. How he responds to having a bad game is what will determine if he is bad or not.

That is probably the best illustration I have seen. Well said.

  24. PUGS&BUCS Says:

I don’t understand why he makes every kick when the team is getting BLOWN OUT BY DOUBLE-DIGITS, but when winning or with the game in question he’s as nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.

That is ***NOT*** a good sign.

  25. unbelievable Says:

    Not worried at all.

He’s a rookie who had 2 poor games. That’s it.

  26. Bucamania Says:

    Pfft. Kickers. smh

  27. SOEbuc Says:

Good rookie kicker you’ve been raving about all season has a bad day and will likely (hopefully) bounce back in the PAT area after more experience. Ease up Joe.

  28. Rod Munch Says:

    If he makes his kick…
If the defense doesn’t collapse in Seattle…
If the refs don’t stop the play in Tennessee…

    The team is 7-4.

  29. Jameis Almighty! Says:

By going Gay in the 2019 season, Licht has proven that his alternative approach to the draft is a disease to this franchise.

  30. Jameis Almighty! Says:

Rod Munch is correct… Excellent take!
