“I’m Comfortable”; Bruce Arians Talks Sacks Blame

The Bucs’ allow 3.6 sacks per game, a very high number by league standards, a full sack more per game than they allowed last season.
Who is to blame?
Head coach Bucco Bruce Arians tossed his share at Jameis Winston on SiriusXM NFL Radio yesterday and downplayed any notion that his offensive line is giving up the booty too often.
Hall of Fame general manager asked Arians if pass blocking from the O-line was a hidden issue.
“I’m comfortable [with the pass blocking from the offensive line],” Arians said. “The one thing, these guys are dependable. They’re there every week. [Alex] Cappa played with a broken arm and came back in two weeks. They’re there every week. Some of it is coverage sacks; some of it his holding the ball. Though the last few weeks Jameis has done a good job of throwing balls away. You know, it’s a combination of those things.
“I never get carried away with sacks as much as why we are having sacks. You know what I mean? I always say, if I’m a left tackle and I block this guy 59 plays and he gets one sacks, I stink, you know, but I blocked you 59 times.
“Sacks, you get 16 sacks, you’re going to make 16 million. That’s only one play a game. So that’s always baffled me how that works. But I think it’s a combination of tight ends, you know, we’ve missed some hots [reads], just throw it away instead of pulling it back down. Just learning the offense.”
More growing pains for the Bucs offense, or perhaps just pains.
Joe understands Arians’ 59-snaps take on pass blocking from offensive linemen. He clearly puts more of the pressure on the quarterback to feel the pressure, read the defense and avoid the sack via decision-making.

Practically- I don’t see how BA helps JW. Other than watching his back in interviews and P.Cs He’s doing nothing to help him get rid of the ball quicker OR JW just can’t do it. Either way- one or both should go. We don’t need to go through this for another season.

Winston can take a beating…..I’ll give him that…..he needs to roll out more so it will be easier for him to throw it away when pressured……He seems to like to hang in the pocket too long….looking for receivers to get open…..he could do the same on a roll-out….

The only time Jameis holds the ball is when he is supposed to throw long and has to wait 5 seconds for the WR to break long ways down the field. That is on Leftwich not Jameis. In the last game Jameis hardly had three seconds before the Saints were all over him. Turnstyle D. Smith and Long in the tooth Dotson were getting beaten like drums. That is on the OL (and Leftwich for not using pass blocking TEs to chip block the sackers). You could tell the OL were not even able to run block in that game! That is why Jameis had to pass too much in that game.

ME13 ranked 70th in separation yards
Gowdin ranked 115
Perriman ranked last.
Meanwhile Jameis has pass rushers in his face more than 3/4 of other starting QBs due to the fabulous inconsistent play of the o-line.
But yea if only he got the ball out quicker to his WRs who aren’t open yet, I’m sure that wouldn’t result in even more turnovers, right?
smdh this team just has so many damn issues, QB being ONE of them, among many others. But I’m sure a statue like Andy Dalton or Mike Glennon would perform way better LOFL

Neither WR are great route runners, Deandre Hopkins, OBJ, Thomas, AB, Julio and many more are much better route runners than both. Godwin gets a lot of his due to off coverage. Evans catches a ton of contested balls because he doesnt get good separation. OJ has been the same as well this year.
Clearly a lot of you guys dont watch the games.

Never said either was trash or anything of that sort, in fact I think they’re both great at many things.
But they don’t excel at getting separation, as many other receivers do.
So when it takes 5 – 6 seconds to get separation, your QB can’t throw the ball in under 2 seconds. Pretty simple logic.

D.R. has made this point already…but BA likes a vertical game…so do I btw…but D.R. is beginning to convince me that we simply do not have the personnel…beginning with JW…and your point that neither of our stud WR’s scares anybody with their speed. They are possession receivers.
OJ can actually get open deep in the seam but OJ is clearly struggling.
ME13 and Godwin are open on quick outs…those scare me when JW throws them..as well as quick crossing patterns..JW seems to hit these much better.
Shorten up the routes and shorten the time in the pocket eh.

thats what the good QBs do….they anticipate the throw….JW has to see the WR open before he throws the ball….which is bad since he’s in his 5th year….

I criticize Jameis for plenty, but thinking he’s the only thing wrong with this team is asinine.
How many games would Tom Brady win throwing the ball 51 times while the offense only ran the ball 6 times?
Again, put Tom Brady on this team and we have 1 more win, maybe 2 at best. Maybe.

This is a growing problem I got with this team is all the fans wanna try to point one finger at one thing and act like that’s our only problem.
I’d like to start with the fundamentals and see that problems go away first. You know things like snapping the ball, catching passes and limiting the presnap pentalties. Tackling is much better this year but still bites us in the ass every once in a while.
Get the fundamentals working and it’ll be much easier to evaluate the rest.

@BA … “Just learning the offense.” Sorry BA, that excuse isn’t selling anymore. Jameis is getting killed behind this OLine & no NFL QB could win absorbing 36 sacks and 79 QB Hits in just 10 games. THAT’S obscene. Yes, Jameis himself is partly to blame, but so is this OLine AND your dinosaur of an offensive BOMBS AWAY strategy. It’s a prescription for MORE turnovers, and teams with negative turnover differentials rarely have winning records.
The Arizona defense performed at a high level from 2013-2017 in terms of generating a high number of takeaways to compensate for a high number of giveaways on the part of BA’s offenses. His 2 best years there were when the TO differential was highest: 2014 & 2015. That’s no coincidence.
o 2013: 30 takeaways against 31 giveaways … differential Minus 1 … 10-6 WL
o 2014: 28 takeaways against 17 giveaways … differential Plus 11 … 11-5 WL
o 2015: 33 takeaways against 24 giveaways … differential Plus 9 … 13-3 WL
o 2016: 28 takeaways against 28 giveaways … differential Zero … 7-8-1
o 2017: 21 takeaways against 25 giveaways … differential Minus 4 … 8-8 WL
BTW, through 10 games our 2019 Bucs’ offense has 25 giveaways, while our 2019 Bucs’ defense has 15 takeaways for a turnover differential of MINUS 10. We’re on-track to have the most number of offensive giveaways (40) and the least number of takeaways (24) … with the highest TO differential (MINUS 16) … of any team BA has coached. And no, you don’t make the playoffs with a MINUS 16 TO differential.

I’d love for the blame to be tossed towards the biggest culprit. Offensive play design. Pass routes that are all late breaking 15+ yards down the field without a single safety valve, rub, cross, flare, checkdown, anything other than 3-4 receivers running 3-4 vertical routes.

Place a tinted faceshield on JW’s helmet so that he doesn’t allow the defense to be glued to his huge bulging eyes and allow so many gifts.
Also score 55 or more points to take our young secondary out of the equation.
I know….just fantasizing but would be nice.
