When you’re 3-7 and your quarterback has lost a ton of games through five seasons, national media types start categorizing you in the scrum of clubs that might draft the top quarterback prospect in the NFL Draft.
College football fans have seen Louisiana State QB Joe Burrow have a spectacular season, one that has reached unexpected heights, and at this point he looks like he’ll be the No. 1 overall pick on April 23.
(FYI, Joe’s got a monster draft party planned and the new location is 100 percent confirmed already. Formal announcement next month.)
Today, hot dog eating contest-protesting, mock draft-scowling, L.L. Bean-wearing, Second Amendment abolitionist, Mike Florio-arguing, parrot-insensitive, chewing-with-his-mouth-open, soup-gulping, California train-romancing, anti-football proliferation, outhouse-admiring, airline-napping, steerage-flying, Yogi Berra-worshiping, urinal picture-taking, video game-playing, Taylor Swift-listening, pickpocket-thwarting, Bucs-uniform-frowning, Allie-LaForce-smitten, Big-Ten-Network-hating, pedestrian-bumping, olive oil-lapping, popcorn-munching, coffee-slurping, fried-chicken-eating, oatmeal-loving, circle-jerking, craft beer-chugging, cricket-watching, scone-loathing, college football-naïve, baseball-box-score-reading, NPR-honk, filthy-hotel-staying, fight-instigating, barista-training, Budweiser-tolerant, baseball scorecard-keeping social activist NFL insider Peter King of NBC Sports wrote about how he believes Burrow has a 75 percent of being the No. overall pick and how the Bucs could be within striking distance of trading up for him — if they tire of Jameis Winston’s inconsistent play.
6. I think there’s one asterisk: Cincinnati or Miami would have to have the first pick in the draft. If that pick belongs to the Jets, Giants, Washington or Atlanta, I could see them taking Ohio State pass-rusher Chase Young, or trading down to a team desperate for Burrow. With the unfortunate Tua Tagovailoa hip injury, which could sideline him well into 2020 or longer, and with another command performance by Burrow (16 straight non-dink-and-dunk completions at one point Saturday night, for 242 yards), Burrow is clearly the top quarterback prospect. There could be four teams in the top 10, within striking distance to get the pick if they don’t finish this regular season in the pole position: Miami, Cincinnati, Denver and Tampa Bay (if Jameis Winston finishes the regular season shaky).
Who knows what the final six Bucs games will bring?
A four- or five-win season could deliver the No. 5 or No. 6 overall pick and a new head coach and general manager. It’s just too early to predict or speculate sensibly. Heck, what about Jameis’ new ankle injury that happened late in yesterday’s game? That potentially could change the landscape for Team Glazer and the Bucs.
The flaw in King’s logic centers around the Dolphins.
Even if they finish at No. 7 overall and the No. 1-picking team doesn’t want a quarterback, the Dolphins have a mountain of draft capital to trade up compared to the Bucs. If the Bucs were inclined to make such a deal, they’d have to cough up a current front line talent in addition to a slew of picks.

We need an oline and a secondary. We need trench play. We need trench play. I’m ok with Winston for now but hypothetically say we draft a quarterback. Do you want Joe Harrington or David Carr all over again. A punch drunk time rookie. it would be a waste of a pick. He’d get murdered behind the line with absolutely no running game. Geez people we need trench play and secondary help. It doesn’t help that we also are the youngest team in the league.

Arians has said that he really likes Burrow. Plus, the Bucs have sent representatives to watch and scout Herbert from Oregon.
It will be interesting to see what happens the rest of the season. If Winston continues to crap the bed, then anything is possible.
At this point, signing Winston to a long term deal, or franchising him at 27 Million is just absolutely ludicrous.
There are several QB’s coming in this next draft that will be stars in the NFL while the Bucs QB never will. It would be a shame to pass them by while continuing to beat a dead horse.

Although I totally understand why. I’m just not ready for draft talk yet. We have plenty of needs a top 10 player could fill on this team.
And I can deal with this type of draft article, the one I can’t stomach is when you talk about losing out for draft position. There is exactly zero chance players go for that kind of thinking, mostly because that pick could be the kid that takes their job. No way they lay down. And if they do, they should get the VH treatment.

I believe it will be too costly for us to move up for a QB as there are several teams desiring one…..we would be better served by selecting one a bit later in the draft…..there are several prospects that may turn out to be great pros.
If we franchise Winston we should still draft a QB….if that bothers Winston, so be it.
We would be foolish not to give Griffin an opportunity for real NFL snaps later in this season, especially if the decision on Winston has been made (either way)

Drafting another QB savior seems obvious but how will he succeed with too many holes on offense and defense to fill in this off-season? I’m all for moving on from #3 but he’s not the root cause to this year’s poor record.

Just my opinion —
A lot of people are correct in saying drafting a QB still doesn’t fix the other problems.
However, the $21M – $30M you save in having a rookie QB contract versus the cost of another year of @Jameis1of1 does open up some funds to fill some voids. Again

IMHO the team needs an underappreciated journeyman (like the one that won a SB here) who can solidify the offense while this year’s and next year’s rookies mature rather than another rookie QB savior. I’m not sure there’s another Brad Johnson type available but solid mistake free QB play would be an upgrade to what #3 puts on tape each week. Rookie QB’s are a crap shoot. Heisman winning QB’s have yet to set the NFL on fire.

Jacob Eason will storm up the draft boards this offseason and after washingtons bowl game…the bucs if they want will get a great qb….although if they finish in top 3 for the draft I think a new GM should either get an extra #1 or just take chase young……..look at what the raiders have done with mayock and chucky, they are building a solid nfl team that can win in foxboro or baltimore in the future playoffs…..licht is a dunce he missed out on trading a ton of assets with high return the past 2 years….i am against it a little bit but if he could have gotten 2 #1s for mike evans he should have dealt him because the bucs are 5-11 with evans and for whatever reason they dont throw to him for games…he is a HOFer and great for the team and community but he is an asset that would get a huge return for the future bucs who will not be good for 2-3 years at least

Every single quarterback that we have drafted in the first round has been a failure here for one reason or another. Doug had a chance to be decent for a long time but Culverhouse f’d that up. Our team lacks talent EVERYWHERE and there are no quarterbacks worth taking in the first round since Tua is hurt, some scouts say Herbert is a wuss/bad under pressure, and Burrow was a 5th rounder before the season. I’d rather go with more of a sure thing in the first (top tier o-lineman would be nice) round and worry about qb in the 2nd or 3rd. Hell, keep Jameis for one year, or sign some other scrub and worry about qb the year after. We are a long ways away and we need to start by firing Licht and then hiring someone who knows talent.

Funny, I’ve been saying the same thing. Maybe it’s the jarhead DNA.
There are going to be really good offensive tackles or edge rushers available, who I’d prefer in the first round. Fix the trenches (something most of us have been begging for the whole time Jameis 1 of 1 has been GM). Some good QBs will be on the board later.
I would still like to see our backup quarterback see his first real game experience. You never know…

The Bucs are praying Winston can play….because if Griffin comes in and manages the game effectively, all hell will break lose at One Buc Place. That dude has been buried on the depth chart for a few yrs, its not going to be a good look if a viable solution was sitting there yet we kept tanking with Winston. I’m not sold on the LSU guy either….rarely does the most popular college player translate to being effective in the NFL. Often times, they are good but propped up with superior talent much like with Winston when he was at FSU. Look around the league you see guys thriving that weren’t considered the best of their class. Drew Brees was a 2nd rd pick….Lamar Jackson was the last pick in the 1st rd….Russell Wilson was a 4th rd pick as was Tom Brady. I’m not worried if we dont get the “top guy”….great QBs come from a variety backgrounds, programs and rounds. We got the top guy in 2015….as did the Titans….How’d that work out?

Any good QB the Bucs draft is going to be the Jameis 2.0 draft. Don’t know why the Glazer’s don’t sell. Continue to put a bunch of their money into what has been one of the worst teams in the past decade. Could get a lot for a hyped up screen stadium and new indoor training facility. Maybe baby Glazer’s have been crying to sell for a while and get turned down every time.

Because until then, it doesn’t matter WHO you put back there as QB.

No way should we draft another QB without fixing the oline first. What makes you think any QB would thrive with that amount of pressure. I say we keep Jameis, fix the oline and then see what happens. Also get some veteran help in our secondary.

Anyone who has watched the Bucs play all season and doesnt think winston is the root cause should really get their head examined. In 5 years he is the exact same player, any second he could throw multiple turnovers in a quarter. It is insane that people defend him constantly, if you think he will be good somewhere else go back and watch some film.

Picking a QB at #1 has always worked so well eh…the ONLY reason Mariota wasn’t that pick was because JW was better. Neither of them is working out.
Here are some familiar names of QB’s picked #1 in case JW and MM are not enough to shake some sense into folks
Jamarcus Russell…Tim Couch…Baker Mayfield(jury still out but Cleveland fans already believe they have JW 2.0)..David Carr..
Sam Bradford (decent but did he turn a franchise around) Jeff George…Those are #1 picks in the ENTIRE DRAFT…if you expand to first rounders it gets uglier.
AGAIN…the draft is a total crapshoot. This means that yeah many if not most great QB’s come from a high draft pick…but it’s far from certain..even with the very top pick!
So forget losing on purpose. We are the freaking Bucs..we don’t need to lose on purpose…we lose anyway…looking at a single pick..or a single victory as making a difference in this team is absurd! Play the kids…find out what we have and give them experience but do NOT lose on purpose…what message does that send to the guys actually strapping on their helmets. We get NO FEEL for how anybody plays in that scenario. Who is going to give any effort to lose? Playing the kids will lose enough without doing it on purpose. JW will throw enough picks…miss enough open targets…take enough sacks…we’re not jeopardizing our freaking draft position even if we try to win.
So here is a draft strategy for you. Trade OJ in the off season.
If we have two #1’s we have the ability to convert those into 4-8 pics depending on round.
People here seem to love Chucky…well that was his strategy with the Raiders…he gave up the best pass rusher in the NFL for multiple picks.
We should stop focusing on ONE pick and instead focus on the ENTIRE draft.
Does anybody here believe we are just one player away from the playoffs? Really? We have some good/great young players but not enough.
Imagine two first round picks going to OL/DL…two first round picks in the trenches give us a 50-50 chance of dramatically improving one side of the trenches. Imagine picking up a few more picks in the 2nd and 3rd with other trades.

As long as these clowns are running the BigTop nothing going to change. BA had a veteran QB in Arizona plus a excellent defensive backfield just the opposite he has here. A lot of players he drafted were not great. In New York Bowles drafted Leonard Williams and Darron Lee both turned out to be head cases.

You all think they are going to design an entire offense around him like Baltimore did for jackson? Because i dont. This draft has to entirely be the trenches. Both sides need upgrading. Unless you get burrow ,screw drafting a qb. Get chase young or the tackle from georgia and tell lazy ass d smith hes moving to right tackle no matter what.

I am tired of everyone saying it’s the line that’s why JW keeps turning the ball over. Yes the right side of the line has issues. However this guy takes to long to make reads and holds onto the ball way to damn long. So it’s not all on the offensive line. I think Winston would still turn the ball over at least twice a game even with an above average line. Just watch other NFL games for years Seattle line sucked yet Wilson was still making plays and winning games and not turning the ball over 4 or 5 times a game. Stop trying to save the below average QB time to move the hell on.

Jeremiah is 10x better than Mayock imo.
Imo there’s not a good FA who will sign with the Bucs, that’s been the case for years.
If you try to build through the draft you’ll get bad picks like MJ Stewart over Donte Jackson or OJ Howard over Ryan Ramczyk or Dalvin Cook.
So it just seems like a lost cause. The one thing that sticks out to me is how young lichts picks are, while or opponents have jailhouse bodies or guys are just finishing puberty but wtfdik

Here’s some stats for the Siberia’s QB crew: WinSTUNNED is 31st in completion percentage, leads in interceptions by 6 over Mayfield and leads in times sacked(mostly his own doing) … and has a horrid win-loss record. And people still debate about this fraud? I’m near done with this team, it’s been the most painful 5 years…including the Vinny era…

I agree with the “Trenches” crowd. Always have, actually. OT is our biggest need, so draft the best available. Then, I would throw my 2nd pick on Tua. We tried that with that worthless wonder from Clemson a few years back. It didn’t work out, but I would still try it again. Think he’ll drop?

Let Tua rehab and play Griffin after saying goodbye to that guy we wasted a #1 overall pick on. Worst case is we let Tua come in the second half of next season and we get a good pick the next April anyway. Keep our coach, don’t completely rebuild…

Burrow is overrated. He is surrounded by superior talent, faces very little pressure. He is a system QB and any rookie, him, Tua, Herbert, and anyone else would fail miserably behind this o-line. Bucs have two choices, sign JW to a short term deal and cross their fingers that he figures some of this out, or burn it to the mother$#%^ing ground and bring in some scrub like Foles or Keenum and let the losses mount. 2020 draft should be focused on the trenches and not one damn pick should be wasted in any round on a QB. I know the anti Jameis crowd can’t wait to see him leave and take his picks with him. However, the secondary still sucks beyond belief and gives up points at an alarming rate. How is some game manager QB going to lead this team to victory. Foles led the Jags to 13 points yesterday. Jameis, with all his flaws, is better than any rookie or scrub QB they bring in. We need a QB capable of putting up a 50 spot on a team like the Rams. None of the potential FAs including Bridgewater is going to come anywhere near that type of offensive production. Blow it up or ride with Jameis are your only two logical options.

Bucnutter I agree with you bro as well. It’s not even fun anymore rather we lose are not . My life or my joy is not built around the Bucs it’s just for fun to me been a bucs fan for over 20 years now. I rather see the fan base together then apart. So let’s just get another guy now when we do I don’t want to here about defense or running game because he’s going to have to overcome all of that just to win 1 game. He’s got to be able to score 30 points a game.

So let me get this straight, the guy with a bum ankle and a broken hip is going to come in behind one of the worst olines in the nfl and win games? Will he be able to score more than 32 ppg too? Lol, you guys are truly special.
Best bet is when Jameis walks away from this franchise, you start Griffin, you loss all 16 games and draft Trevor Sunshine Lawrence who could throw 8 pick sixes each game and NEVER lose one ounce of support from the “real fans”.

As long as we have a really bad oline, Winston with his slow release and hesitancy to find open receivers is the worst type of quarterback for the team. We have to get a faster guy, even if he doesn’t have the greatest arm, at least someone that will move out of the pocket, I’m so tired of watching Jameis standing in the middle of the pocket while his tackles are being pushed into him. Get rid of the damn ball or take off but don’t just stand there and wait and wait and wait. He literally has the worst clock in his head of any quarterback whose played for the Bucs.

Tua’s injury is pretty serious. I don’t think we need to spend more than a 3rd to get him as a rehab project. Past that, he’ll probably choose to rehab in school and come out later with a chance at a higher draft position and better contract.

Drafting a QB saves you a ton of garbage money in a garbage player. That’s how we salvage the other need positions. I could say take a chance on Winston because of his yards and intangibles, but he’s still making rookie mistakes. I don’t care what other people think regarding he has no run support or defense. They don’t cause the INTs thrown by the QB. It’s a business and production league. You get paid to perform – not to be a bottom third QB who is part of the problem in the 5th year. Especially, when there are QBs who have entered the league after him who are performing better than him.
If JPP and Barrett both leave cuz we have no money to pay them, we are literally starting all over with the DL which has looked above average this season. I would rather lock one or both of them up and try TRY trrrry to draft intelligently for OT, CB1, DE, S, CB2, and possibly RB2.
I don’t see GM Gump leaving or the coaches. Jameis has put himself in a corner. It all depends on our draft position, if we get top 5, then JW is probably a goner. If it’s 8-12, then there’s a chance they franchise him and select a position other than QB if all the top QBs are gone. You can’t get more TOs from a rookie than what Jameis has provided, so I’ll take the business decision to say we have to go another direction for the team and for Jameis.
Tua’s injury adds a new wrinkle. Is it as bad as some think it is? Bo Jackson career ending bad? I don’t see him declaring for the 2020 draft at all. He has to prove to the NFL he can recover. Sad, what was once a top 2 QB in the draft may now be career ending.
If the Bucs don’t finish at least 5-11, I’m not sure what the Glazers will do because it’s not like this team has a ton of cash and draft capital to turn things around in 2020. At the very least, do the Glazers tell BA to stop getting paid like a coach if he wants to sit his as* in the background or assume play calling duties? This offense has been the same or regressed in areas from Dirk/Monken’s offense. That’s not at all what they paid for.
