Arians “Didn’t Miss [Coaching] That Much”
October 31st, 2019Interesting words from Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians about his year away from football last year.
For the first time in his adult life, Arians was not coaching players last year. Instead, he traveled each weekend doing games for CBS Sports as part of a network TV broadcast team.
In speaking with Seattle reporters Wednesday, Arians, notes the creator, curator and overall guru of Pro Football Talk, the great Mike Florio, told the Seattle pen and mic club he was not suffering in his first year away from the daily grind of coaching.
“I’ll be honest with you, I didn’t miss it that much,” Arians told Seattle reporters on a conference call in advance of Sunday’s game against the Seahawks. “I just hated the travel of television. This opportunity came along, and the General Manager is a good friend, I love the ownership, and all of my assistant coaches were available, and when my wife got excited, I said, ‘OK, why not?’”
Florio has long stated he believes Arians with the Bucs is a boom-or-bust thing. Either the Bucs made it to the playoffs or the team would fully collapse and Arians would go off to retirement, this time for good, and live the good life.
Arians has stated very peculiar things of late. He’s mentioned he’s frustrated because his methods don’t seem to be getting results.
Then he dropped out of the blue how coaches and general managers can get fired by losing games like the Bucs did in Nashville last week. And now we find out Arians wasn’t exactly suffering from football withdrawal symptoms in his lone year away from the game.
This is all giving Joe a funny feeling. It’s almost as if Arians is having buyer’s remorse.

It sounds like he bought the story line (talent is here, they just need coaching) and he’s realizing this is a big and long term rebuild. I’m guessing that Licht pushed that line of thinking so much that he hoodwinked BA out of retirement and the Glazers out of an extension. Funny thing happened though when they started playing games. You can’t coach a lack of talent.

Bruce ” Lack of Preparation H” Arians
WOW
What more needs to be said?
His wife got excited – well if anyone is married they know how quickly that can fade.
The Golf Cart was excited but now is making a resume to replace Caddy’s at Bushwood.

The same buyer’s remorse the Glazers have over drafting Jameis Winston first overall. Should have gone after a DE. I am surprised he’s lasted this long. I would love to see what kind of clauses may be in Licht’s contract. If you offered me the choice of 9-7 and slight chance tto make the post-season, OR they ditch, Licht, Arians, and Winston at season’s end….I’d pick the latter. I just don’t think they are going to every go anywhere with these three. Arians may have been good at one point, but he’s ineffective now, for whatever reasoon it is. Licht and Winston have never met standards. Blow the team up.
October 31st, 2019 at 5:25 am
Well it would be interesting to have another Arian’s confidence poll. His support eroded between the last two. Imagine after everyone has digested this?
What a thing to say and to the opponents media?
The Bucs gig sounds more like a hobby than a vocation.
October 31st, 2019 at 5:31 am
All the things that would have enticed Arians to come here.
– The weather is good.
– The money is great.
– If the wife likes it…
– The GM is your friend–you can probably do whatever you want. All the input of being the GM without having to actually do it.
– Bring your own guys; don’t stress yourself out–Lefty will pick up playcalling for you.
– The golf cart was an added bennie…not kidding.
– You can always walk away. The Bucs will certainly not be any worse than you found them.
He probably also liked the challenge in fixing Winston. And realizing that is probably not possible, I think he’s in denial there.

That says it all.

This isn’t good, he’s hatching his escape plan. I smell a full rebuild coming. I’m ok with that so long as Gump is out with him. New GM, new direction for the team. I dont trust the Glazer boys to pick the right one however. Time forna president of football operations.
I’M SICK OF LOSING!
October 31st, 2019 at 5:46 am
He is out of here ! To many statements I have seen in media paint the picture . Can the Glazers get it right for once ?
October 31st, 2019 at 6:00 am
Hire Peyton Manning as GM.
He is a genius.
October 31st, 2019 at 6:05 am
He should do us a favor and retire. The game has passed him by. Leftwich is just a scapegoat. All plays go through BA especially the critical ones. It is more likely that BA is making Leftwhich look bad than the other way around.

@Joe … “It’s almost as if Arians is having buyer’s remorse”.
Uhhh, how about … “It’s almost as if the buyers are having Arians’ remorse”.

@Bruce Arians … ““I just hated the travel of television. This opportunity came along, and the General Manager is a good friend, I love the ownership, and all of my assistant coaches were available, and when my wife got excited, I said, ‘OK, why not?’”
Why not? Seriously? Someone waves a few million in front of you & your thought is ‘Why not take it?’ Duh.
It’s painfully obvious that Arians isn’t ‘all in’. Our Delegater-in-Charge is in way over his head.

Yep, there is a reason “all” of his assistant coaches were available.
The Golf Cart is now actively looking on Indeed for openings at BushwoodCC!
October 31st, 2019 at 7:07 am
Wow so far Dirk has been the more likable coach than BA
October 31st, 2019 at 7:10 am
To be fair when my wife gets excited I also say “Ok why not?”
October 31st, 2019 at 7:14 am
BA its all about me. He didn’t miss coaching but he missed the 💰.
October 31st, 2019 at 7:24 am
Another bad decision by the Glazers
Once he said he wasn’t calling plays they should’ve backed out of the deal
If he’s not calling plays, why is he here?
October 31st, 2019 at 7:25 am
This one hurts.
Was there a single true soundbite or quip from this guy from the offseason?
October 31st, 2019 at 7:28 am
BA is all BS!
October 31st, 2019 at 7:28 am
I’d rather have an honest Kris Richard than a fake BA.
October 31st, 2019 at 7:36 am
If things keep going south it sounds like he is gonna walk again. Which was worst case scenario in the offseason.
What a disaster this organization is…
October 31st, 2019 at 7:39 am
When you blame the rest of the players continually for the messiah’s mistakes and you don’t accept where the problem is what do you expect – Jameis The coach killer !
October 31st, 2019 at 7:49 am
Good point.
You go up to the podium and loudly criticize the entire team and defend the qb with the most turnovers in his era.
Is that the method that he expects to work but don’t?
October 31st, 2019 at 7:55 am
Petty officer buc Kris Richard would have a much better choice. This BA is a joke.
October 31st, 2019 at 7:58 am
To be honest I am extremely disappointed. If this thing gets blown up then there’s another 5 year wait for a young team to develop. If that doesn’t happen then it’s just a vicious cycle. I’ve lost all faith.
October 31st, 2019 at 8:00 am
We literally have the worst combo in football…..a bad GM and bad QB. Arians, Koetter, Bowles, Smith…and even Leftwich all know football. You cant make someone not turn the ball over….you cant make a player more talented. Its that simple. They can scheme and coach around the clock, when the ball is kicked off, the players you have on the field MUST have the ability to execute at a higher level then the opposing players. We dont have that….its that simple.
I often think….would another coach get more from this roster, someone like Belicheck for example. I think he might squeeze more out but it will come from a level of accountability and spending that the Glazers would never be on board with. Belicheck has considered moving on from Tom Brady….Winston would have been gone or benched by now.
October 31st, 2019 at 8:02 am
You think they would’ve learned dragging Lovie in off the washed up, and out of the league heap. BA’s kids kids will live a nice life off the Glazer loot he got. The Glazers are like a blind man buying bubble gum with 100 dollar bills expecting to get exact change back. Steve Miller, go on take the money, and run.
October 31st, 2019 at 8:11 am
Clean this coaching staff and front office immediately!!! I want people here in Tampa that actually wanna be here and bring in talent and not lack luster football whatever happened to bucs ball man
October 31st, 2019 at 8:27 am
We know the cycle by now. Once Arians is out it will be a quote un quote new and exciting young coach. We will hit one of these days but I have no idea when. On the flip side we’ll see what we have with this team at the end of the year. If we can turn it around there just may be some hope. Not as optimistic as usual but time will tell.
October 31st, 2019 at 8:29 am
Arians and Bowles really misjudged or mis-evaluated the personnel on this team, particularly on defense. His “good” friendship with Licht got in the way of reality when it came to trusting the GM’s past/present judgements. This isn’t the same team he inherited in Indy or Arizona and this certainly isn’t Luck or even Palmer at QB. Winston just can be coached to make CONSISTENTLY sound decisions during a game. The other problem he’s facing is the grand experiment of delegation; I.e., Leftwich isn’t working and his intermittent rather than consistent involvement in play calling is creating chaos rather than fluidity. Honestly from what I’ve seen so far Leftwich doesn’t seem ready to be a full time play called so maybe Arians misjudged that as well.
October 31st, 2019 at 8:30 am
and when i was pounding the table for Kris Richard, folks laughed at me….lol…
who’s laughing now….lol….
GO BUCS!!!!

Not opposed to the idea. I think we can all assume he is probably more intelligent than John Lynch (alldue respect to lynch) with a greater football mind. I was never a Manning dude when he played but if you could give a GM job to ONE former player, most people would probably say Peyton Manning.
October 31st, 2019 at 8:59 am
With this I have no confidence left in this team. Rebuild it and sell just like the dolphins have this year.
October 31st, 2019 at 9:06 am
813bucboi: someone on one of the podcasts, one of the Joe’s I think got hold of Richard at the Pro Bowl up @ the Citrus Bowl last January and interviewed him. The JBF guy asked him about his opinion of the Bucs. The interview was all positive by my recollection until BA was brought up which led to a sudden end to the interview and a cold shoulder. In retrospect maybe that 39 year old guy could reach this locker room better than a guy who is collecting social security and is IRA’s age……
October 31st, 2019 at 9:14 am
BA has always been a good interview. Ya’ll read WAY too much into his comments. Igf he were bland you’d deplore “just more coach speak.” Can’t have it both ways. With BA, what u see/hear is what you get, which most find refreshing. He’s every bit as frustrated by close losses as anyone on this board, for sure.
October 31st, 2019 at 9:20 am
BA, saying you really didn,t miss coaching. Well it certainly shows. The Glazer’s & Arians was sold a bill of goods by loser Licht 7 now the fans are suppose to buy into this BS. Glazer’s you need to awake from your coma & sell the team to someone who knows something about football & who is dedicated to winning. Unless something drastically is done I’m finished with this team. All the fans going to the next home game be sure & bring your paper bags.
October 31st, 2019 at 9:26 am
This is really a reach. Too much of a grind for anyone even an experienced BA to take the job for millions and not want to be all in to it. Painting his effort so far as half-hearted or less than as a coach is not truthful. I think he means what he said, he liked the situation on many fronts and came back to coach. His comment about refs and stating coaches and players get fired for bad results was just that. Nothing to see here.

October 31st, 2019 at 10:29 am
Coaching did not miss you either! @ jameis 1 of 1 Fake Bucs GM account look it up on youtube .GM is a fraud!!! Spends his days covering for Winston instead of
doing his job . Cover this story JOE if you cover the BUCS ? Do your JOB!!
October 31st, 2019 at 11:24 am
Coaching may have passed him by, but he’s still a BS artist of the highest magnitude.
Time for him to retire again and become the Urban Meyer of the NFL.
Peace, out
October 31st, 2019 at 11:35 am
I think we all might be guilty of overthinking.
BA looked at the roster and thought he had a chance. Many others agreed with him. I certainly did.
He could very easily be 4-3 right now instead of 2-5. I suspect he knew it was a crapshoot and so he really just rolled the die and has come up snake eyes. Time to cash in the chips?
Depends on how committed BA is to actually turning this around or how much he thought he’d give it a shot and see what happens. Not much happening so far that’s for sure.
October 31st, 2019 at 11:35 am
Poor guy.
Try being a fan of this team for the past 30 years.
It ain’t easy.
October 31st, 2019 at 11:39 am
BA’s tie in with Licht is creepy and stinks like the sewer processing plant.

If you’re right and Manning is a genius, he’ll have the good sense to stay away from this dumpster fire…
I would imagine he’s eyeing the Denver job, if he has any interest in being a GM at all.

The most important paragraph of the Florio article, not quoted here, is as follows:
Florio is spot on. There isn’t going to be another level of Jay-Miss’ play. This is it! This is all he is ever going to be. He will never be more than what he is right now. His ceiling isn’t all that high but his floor can be abysmal.
October 31st, 2019 at 3:41 pm
“To be honest I am extremely disappointed. If this thing gets blown up then there’s another 5 year wait for a young team to develop. If that doesn’t happen then it’s just a vicious cycle. I’ve lost all faith.”– -StPete
Ahhh, another satisfied customer! I cannot imagine someone paying list price for a ticket to the Snake Pit.
This is BA airing his soul regarding the Bucs, his career and his desire to coach here for long enough to turn this garbage scow around. Time for a reset:
New GM
New HC
Sign a vet QB or (gasp) Kapernick
Draft QB
Draft OL 2nd rd.
” 3rd rd.
Sign Vet DB
Sign Vet OL
Do this and we improve to 7-9 next year. After that maybe time to be optimistic.
October 31st, 2019 at 9:57 pm
