Bucco Bruce Arians gave his Bucs roster a massive bye week break. Players report back today; Joe never heard of such a long in-season getaway.
But Tampa Bay coaches have been busy, Arians explained yesterday.
They attacked expanded self-scouting duties and Arians told sports chief Dan Lucas of WFLA-TV that much of that was about isolating tendencies good and bad.
“The good ones you say, ‘ok, they know we can do this, but can they stop us?’ Or, ‘hey, in this personnel group, it’s 90 percent pass, so let’s get some runs out of that and change what they have on you,” Arians explained.
As Joe noted yesterday, Arians’ Cardinals were 4-1 after bye weeks during his coaching tenure there. And the teams he’s been in charge of have never lost three consecutive regular-season games.
Joe is fired up to see Arians’ adjustments and how he and Byron Leftwich prepare the offense for a truly high-caliber Titans defense.
This is where Arians and his giant staff need to earn their money.
One thing Joe would change in a hurry is first-down playcalling. Per Warren Sharp’s reliable SharpFootballStats.com, the Bucs are running on first down 55 percent of the time, tenth most often in the NFL but that’s an amazingly high percentage considering how often they’ve played catch-up through six games.
But here’s the painful part: when the Bucs do pass on first down, they’re not good at it. Sharp’s calculations say their “success rate” throwing on first down is only better than one team: the tanking Dolphins.
With all those receiving weapons and a nothing special running backs stable, Joe would love to see the Bucs get a little more out of passing on first down, and do it a little more often.

LOL…Good point about Arians above. HOWEVER…he has NEVER coached the Bucs before.

I will believe it when I see. I believe Arians is a good coach. But these are the Bucs. Constantly reinventing ways to suck. I really hope they turn it around, Im just Jaded from the perpetual suck since the day Monte Kiffen anouced he was leaving.

He’s right. It worked for Arians in the NFL Championship win. Oh wait. That was Lovie Smith. Arians has never taken his team anywhere really.
Yeah, I can’t wait to see what they have going in TEN, only to fall again in SEA and come back home 4-5 to a HUGE crowd and another BIG home win! Woo hoo…the chance to be .400 and in third place is exciting!
Two more wins. Maybe split with ATL, maybe either ARI or IND. That’s all folks.

More screens!
OJ Howard should get 2 screens per game.
Chris Godwin should get 1 screen per game.
Rojo and PB should get 1 screen each per game.
And when are we going run a bloody QB sneak on 3rd or 4th and 1.
Tom Brady is 42 and they run QB sneaks every week!

Titans #10 against the pass and #13 against the run.
Bucs #1 against the run and #32 against the pass.
Titans main offensive strength is running the ball but because it’s the Buc’s strength this will force Tannehill to pass.
Bucs main offensive strength is passing the ball. The Titans are middle of the road on pass protect so this game will come down to how many points can Jameis put on the board or how many turnovers Jameis gives to the Titans. Which Jameis do we get? We already know what to expect from the defense.

Teacherman. I agree 100%. I would also throw some screens to ME. In the saints game where he didn’t have catch the db was playing way off of him. That could’ve been some easy productive 1st down play calls.

Considering there are only two options 55% of running is not that bad or we will be saying they throw too much in 1st down they should run it more.

Our Bucs needed to go into the bye at least 3-3 to have a fighting chance. At 2-4, they will forever be playing..Ketchup. Tenn is no slouch. Their backup is taking advantage of his opportunity. And y’all know what backups do to us..every single..GD time. We should be fresh come Sunday. But..After all we are the Bucs with our prayer beads and praying to the football Gods. We shall see. Don’t have my hopes up though.

The majority of the preseason predictions I saw were anywhere from 5-11 to 8-8. The 2-4 start is not outrageous when looked at this way. There is still the possibility to reach 8-8 or even 9-7. This depends on coaching and minimal injuries for the remainder of the season.
I was looking to see if there is any shuffling of the lineup this week. I wondered why there were no additional practices last week.
I am happy to see that Arians and staff are doing wisely what they were hired to do … COACHING. Self evaluation and adjustment is an important part of that responsibility.
