Production Fade Vs. Real Impact

Some might call this a Gerald McCoy story.
But it’s actually a peek at the steep statistical decline of Ndamukong Suh since he put on a Bucs uniform.
The folks at One Buc Palace will tell you Suh is having a powerful season, that he’s the consummate professional and has been a consistent force in the run game and pushing the pocket.
Ok. Joe’s not calling Suh the next Chris “Swaggy” Baker. He’s playing a lot and has put good stuff on film. But Suh is on pace for several personal lows when it comes to production:
He’s on pace for 30 combined tackles this season (solo tackles + assists). If that holds, it would be the lowest season total of his NFL career. He had 59 last season.
Tackles for loss? Suh has one this season and, yeah, he’s on pace for the lowest season output of his career.
Sacks? Suh has half a sack through six games. You guessed it; he’s tracking for his worst season there.
Tackles for loss? He’s got 1. (See sacks)
QB hits? Suh is on pace for 10. His previous lowest was nine in 2011 when he missed games due to a suspension. With the Rams last year, he had 19 QB hits.
It’s not like Suh isn’t getting help. Vita Vea has had a strong season and Shaq Barrett is drawing a lot of attention.
So why is Suh’s production lacking in so many areas? There is no exact answer, but Joe’s not drinking the Kool-Aid yet on Suh having a strong season.

That’s why he was a free agent for so long. He will be lucky to get 5 mil a year in 2020.

If we can keep him for a lot cheaper next year it might actually be worth re-signing him.

Obviously, he’s a 32 year old defensive lineman with 148 NFL games wear and tear. He’s post-peak. What did you expect?
Highly productive players in their prime rarely make it to free agency. So, you have to overpay guys like Suh to try and cover up for your horrible drafting mistakes.

He’s also looking for his lowest season total for suspensions too. But I’m sure that will change.

Really…it’s not SHUY…it’s the hard fact that we have second and third team players around him!! He’ll continue to fight, anyway SHAQ has shot his shot and I don’t see anyone else stepping up yet but I’m hopeful maybe JPP can bring a little energy!!! Too early to give up!! GO TEAM BUCS!!!

Trollminimum, every football fan on earth knew Barrett wouldn’t continue that pace. He’s getting extra blocking and other players need to step up. But even if he ends the season with 9 sacks he renders your silly statement incorrect on its face. Facts. And our credibility making the statement in the first place? You are a party of one when repeatedly insulting multiple All Pro and Hall of Famer D. Brooks. You’re beyond insulting to Dungy. You even commit “crimes against Joe” with no recourse (you mentioned in a comment this morning when mentioning the appeal of Tampa for players, etc, “small market media hacks with zero credibility so easy press conferences”, clearly a reference to Joe among others, if only by association). I’ll end with a recent comment to a new JBFer who seemed confused by your small minded ugliness:

THANK YOU AlanBucsFan. It’s REALLY getting very old reading Joe continuing to bad mouth our close-to-the-league’s LEAST EXPENSIVE DEFENSE while our league’s MOST EXPENSIVE OFFENSE continues to crap the bed. Joe’s idea of offensive production is watching his precious $100 mil marching band strut up & down the field for mega-yards without getting their uniforms soiled by crossing the goal line too often. All that AFTER our lowly defense has scored 14 points FOR THEM on 2 TOs AND given the offense the ball back NINE other times this season, many times on short fields so they could score more easily. And oh ya, all the while our terrible defense has to clean up the poop after our undaunted offense has turned the ball over an incredible THIRTEEN times in 6 games, resulting in 24 points tagged against the defense PLUS many more points as a result of short fields.
I can’t even believe Joe would have the cojones to bad-mouth Ndamukong Suh. Another diversionary tactic Joe? Bucs were #24 against the run last year, but we’re #1 in that category this year. The difference? Well let’s see, Vea was here, so were Gholston & Allen, and oh ya, JPP AND GMC. The big difference this year in our run defense improvement? Replacing GMC with Ndamukong Suh. And we’re doing it this year WITHOUT JPP so far, who was outstanding against the run. Thus far 32-year-old Suh has played on 77% of our defensive snaps; only Carl Nassib on the DLine has more. The younger GMC has only played in 62% of the Panthers defensive snaps. If the Bucs don’t re-sign Ndamukong Suh for next year … IF he’s even willing to re-sign with us … then we’re damned fools.

…..how is there not an answer? Teams aren’t even trying to run the ball. They know they can expose the secondary as soon as the game starts, so why bother with the run? it’s not a secret. where would the majority of a DT’s tackles come from? Stopping the run. If they’re not running he’s not getting numbers. It’s a pretty simple equation. Offenses have figured out exactly where the holes in the coverage are and exactly how to pick on the CBs. they don’t need to wait for long developing plays to happen, so the sacks aren’t there.

Trollmax, a stopped clock is right twice a day love. Given the myriad decisions most of us have to make, inevitably you’ll get one of them right. Too bad it’s the decision to pick up the bottle. Geraldine put up those same garbage stats and nobody would say a word, that’s cowardly journalism. His play was just about in line with Geraldine until he had the luck of going against a beat up o line. At least he made an impact play that won a game something Geraldine hasn’t done like ever. I’ll take his production over Geraldine playing with a top defense and still doing nothing. We would not have this run defense with mcsoftie here

No…no….no. Listen when the opposing team cannot run the ball on you and they abandon the run because anyone can pass on you its going to make stats look very very ugly across the board for everyone on the defense….not just the guy leaving the wr’s open.
If this needs to be explained to an individual, they should be stripped of their rights to be a fan of the game. Qbsas always have been given a free and clear opening on every play to get rid of the football to a wide open wr long before anyone can get to him.
Only thing I don’t understand is why Bowles isn’t doing a better job. These corners are playing so poorly and so soft. Between that and Leftwich play calling I’m hoping they play another game every Sunday. Byron is making me want to go park at the top of the skyway

You use funky math here Joe. We’re less than halfway through the season. That means he’s on pace for 60+. That;s more than last year.

I like McCoy. I still do. But even I can see Suh has been better for us, even if the numbers do not show it. He and Vea collapse that pocket.
As to Barrett not having number last week, did anyone really expect him to get sacks every single week? The guy is 1 away from double digit sacks! Cut his some slack!!
