Creative Swapping
October 18th, 2019As Joe has stated quite a few times, and will continue to do so until the trade deadline comes and goes on Oct. 29, if the Bucs still want to salvage this season they have to address the secondary.
If the Bucs don’t want to salvage the season, then they can host a firesale and load up for next spring’s draft.
Doing nothing would be, frankly, irresponsible.
But perhaps there is a way to do both? Have a firesale and potentially boost your roster on the defensive side of the ball?
In an article typed by Nate Davis of USA Today, he lists players that could be moved. The very second guy on his list is a Buccaneer.
No, not O.J. Howard, but Shaq Barrett.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers OLB Shaq Barrett: With nine sacks in his first four games, he was generating early buzz as a defensive player of the year candidate. Nagging injuries have slowed him down lately, but this week’s bye and the remnants of a $4 million salary could make him an attractive pass rush option while potentially allowing the Bucs to flip what was virtually a throwaway signing for more than pocket change. Logical fits: Lions, Ravens
Joe hadn’t considered this but it makes too much sense. Barrett (who Joe absolutely loves) in here on a one-year deal. Who knows if the Bucs can afford to keep him unless they franchise him?
The thing about Barrett, we don’t know yet if he was just a four-game flash. He’s been invisible in the past two games. Have teams figured him out?
If the Bucs trade Barrett now, he likely would be at or near his highest trade value. Let’s say the Bucs do trade him, the ransom they would receive could be capital to help acquire another defender Davis has among his list of players who could be moved before the trade deadline.
And that would be:
Jacksonville Jaguars DE Yannick Ngakoue: Looking for a payday, he briefly held out this summer. Ngakoue had averaged 10 sacks per season entering 2019 but has struggled this year. But the pending free agent still has the good to energize a pass rush. Logical fits: Bills, Chiefs, Eagles, Lions, Raiders, Seahawks
Now if someone said you could trade Barrett straight up for Pro Bowler Ngakoue, Joe couldn’t pull the trigger fast enough. Trading Barrett and his limited resume to help build package for Ngakoue means you are basically giving up a guy who is still somewhat unproven over the long haul for one of the better young defensive ends in the game. Not only do you add a damn good pass rusher, you found your replacement for Jason Pierre-Paul, who is very likely gone after this season.
Of course, pulling this off would take being creative and in the end, would make all the sense in the world — which is why Joe doesn’t believe the Bucs would even try to pull something like this off.
If this team just sits on its hands at the trade deadline, then Joe’s going to go mental.
October 18th, 2019 at 8:05 am
Or just try to keep the Sack Ferret!
October 18th, 2019 at 8:06 am
Too creative and too logical for the Bucs to pull it off. Unfortunately, that is the state of Buc football in 2019 after extending the contract of a below-average (I’m being kind!) GM.
Status ‘woe’!
October 18th, 2019 at 8:39 am
One thing to know: Jameis Winston threw five interceptions and fumbled away another turnover in a disastrous performance against the Panthers in London. With the Titans moving on from fellow 2015 top draft pick Marcus Mariota, it’s not tough to imagine the Buccaneers making a similar call with Winston soon.

.joe says he makes more money when the Bucs win, but I do think he almost equally enjoys ‘going mental’.
What if …. the players we have start stepping up and making plays. When they start performing well, should we trade them too?
You beg for a pass rusher, you get one, now you want to trade him. This is clearly Manziel Crush Joe. Haven’t you learned your horrendous personnel wishes drive most of us to want to do the opposite of what you suggest. Not saying getting the kid from Jville would be bad, what I’m saying is that you suggesting it makes it doomed scenario.

October 18th, 2019 at 8:52 am
Let me make sure I’ve got this right Joe. Our Secondary is getting eaten alive & desperately NEEDS a quality veteran CB presence back there. Our OLine has at least TWO starting holes, ZERO DEPTH, and will eventually get our QB killed. Our pass rush right now is non-existent.
So your proposal is to trade the ONE somewhat effective pass-rusher who we do have (Barrett with 9 sacks) for ANOTHER pass-rusher (Ngakoue with 2 sacks). And that helps shore up our Secondary & OLine HOW? It helps our pass-rush HOW?
BTW, I’m not at all convinced that JPP won’t be a Buc next year. How many teams will invest mega-millions in a 30-plus year old DE coming off a broken neck? Oh, let me caveat that … EXCEPT THE BUCS.
October 18th, 2019 at 8:52 am
JOE,
Seriously? If Licht traded away Shaq Barrett, or doesn’t make him THE priority signing those offseason (sorry Jameis), he will firmly have cemented himself as the Bucs’ worst GM in team history … just behind the last guy who let a potential All-Pro/Pro Bowl DE walk out of Tampa.
October 18th, 2019 at 8:55 am
Are best chance of winning is to trade Licketd… by the deadline
October 18th, 2019 at 8:56 am
First off I would trade OJ before Shaq. To say Shaq doesn’t have any sacks the last couple of games so trade him. Well I say if thats the case they should trade all the DL. But I must say that a trade of Shaq for Ngakoue sounds intriguing.
October 18th, 2019 at 9:00 am
Licht and creative aren’t in the same ball park
October 18th, 2019 at 9:03 am
Compare resume and age. It’s a no-brainer.
Next.
October 18th, 2019 at 9:04 am
I wouldn’t hold my breath. Chances are we won’t do anything. oh and there is no salvaging this season. I wouldn’t really be opposed to trading anyone, but have to get the right value, especially for certain players like Barett (would have to be really good value, but he’s one of the few I’d like to keep).
October 18th, 2019 at 9:06 am
First, Joe LOVES Shaq Barrett. Second, his resume is damn thin. He’s had one excellent month in his career. Yannick has a much better track record and is younger.
October 18th, 2019 at 9:06 am
Joe,
Why not trade for your crush Michael Bennett? Lmao. He sucks and has a bad attitude. One more cancer we offloaded that used to get shoved down our throats around here.
October 18th, 2019 at 9:07 am
Joe, I think that your Barret idea makes a lot of sense, …..That´s the main reason why is NOT going to happen, Common sense and 1 Buc in the same sentence , just doesn´t work.
October 18th, 2019 at 9:09 am
Our Guys are our Guys!
Let’s keep all of them.
Signed, JL
October 18th, 2019 at 9:13 am
Wait – So you want to salvage the season by trading our best pass rusher?
Wow. One of the main reasons our pass coverage sucks is because of our lack of ability to rush with our front 4.
You can have Ramsey, Rhodes and Peterson back there. Doesn’t matter.
Remember all of the hammering you did about a previous coach building his defense from the secondary?
October 18th, 2019 at 9:14 am
How about we keep Shaq and swing a deal for Yannick? If Winston is not given a new contract (please football gods make it so) then we should be able to afford both. Give the Jaguars Eugene Marve Jr. er, I mean Devin White since they need a linebacker with Telvin Smith having issues. Licht can somewhat redeem himself for being dumb enough to take a middle linebacker at 5 overall when we had screaming pass rush needs. The Jaguars can’t pay everyone so instead of getting nothing for Yannick, they fill a need with a player with awesome potential that just hasn’t shown it yet. Will he ever show it? Who knows, but it won’t be our problem anymore.
October 18th, 2019 at 9:15 am
Not just potentially salvage the season, but set yourself up for perhaps a decade.
You are going to try to argue Yannick is no good and it would be a dumb move? 🙁
You can hide a bad corner with a pass rush but there isn’t a defensive coordinator alive who can hide a bad corner with no pass rush.
Teams have figured out Barrett it seems. Yet — typical Bucs — no one is stepping up to get after the quarterback.
October 18th, 2019 at 9:18 am
That could be better. Joe was also factoring in salary cap implications.
October 18th, 2019 at 9:21 am
JOE
If only Gardner Minshew didn’t exist, then maybe we could trade Winston and Howard’s to the Jags for Yannick. But to trade our best pass rusher, who could be the next Michael Bennett (without the political BS), for Yannick? That’s a little rich for me. Who’s to say Yannick would be any good here? His production could very well be a product of playing next to Calis Campbell.
October 18th, 2019 at 9:26 am
Yeah. Joe’s been screaming for a pass rusher for years. How’s that going? 🙁
October 18th, 2019 at 9:27 am
Executing a beneficial trade takes a degree of foresight, skill and sophistication that this team has rarely displayed…JPP might be the exception, but big-picture, we might end up with only 1 season of ‘value’ from that deal.
October 18th, 2019 at 9:29 am
Isn’t it great to daydream about a good Bucs team making smart moves at the trade deadline? Then you wake up and realize it was a depression induced fantasy fueled by a few too many Cigar City brews.
No way Licht makes any moves at the trade deadline, unless he’s dreaming too.
Best solution: burn this steaming pile of BS to cinders and start over.
It’s time.
October 18th, 2019 at 9:46 am
Joe- Yeah. Joe’s been screaming for a pass rusher for years. How’s that going? 🙁
And now we have one and you suggest we trade him. Idiot Joe (lee) strikes again!!
October 18th, 2019 at 9:46 am
keep shaq and trade for yannick…..
that’ll solve the pass rush and secondary problems…..
GO BUCS!!!!!
October 18th, 2019 at 9:55 am
good grief ..here we go again.
October 18th, 2019 at 10:03 am
NPR – I’ll be ready for a few Cigar City Brews at HH today! Plus the Bucs can’t lose this weekend! Nice.
In BA I Trust!
October 18th, 2019 at 10:08 am
The most ignorant article yet. You lost your mind the bucs didn’t trade for old arse average dee Ford but it makes all the sense in the world to trade a younger barrett? You cried the entire offseason about drafting a pass rusher and your actually trying to say trading barrett away would improve the roster
Talking out of both sides of your face dude
October 18th, 2019 at 10:11 am
Joe Says:
October 18th, 2019 at 9:03 am
You beg for a pass rusher, you get one, now you want to trade him.
Compare resume age. It’s a no-brainer.
Next.
……….
One is 24 one is 26
One has Nine sacks this yr and the other has two and only had 9.5 through 16 starts last yr.
October 18th, 2019 at 10:23 am
TBH the only thing we want is to TANK so that our draft pick can be as high as possible.
October 18th, 2019 at 10:45 am
his resume is damn thin because he wasn’t a starter and everyone in denver knew he could be and given the opportunity, has been the best defensive player in football.
now i am of the mind that the reason he flourished is because of suh and vea. jpp should ball out when gets here and shaq, jpp, suh, and vea on the field is crazy good.
i just don’t agree with trading him for someone who is likely as good.
October 18th, 2019 at 10:58 am
Every employee at one buc should be fired if they trade away shaq …. there’s plenty of other players with trade value … “on offense” … you can’t keep everyone …. Bucs activated JPP … trade him … I’m telling you anyone on other teams that is a DB is better than any DB on our roster … the season is done anyways … I could care less about trades … but after this season bucs have to make changes in the front office and make changes at the QB position the DB positions and on the Offensive line … the moment the clock hit 0:00 in that last playoff appearance vs the giants in a 24-14 loss the franchise took a huge dump … it’s time the Bucs completely clean house
October 18th, 2019 at 11:12 am
Moderate away Joe. Can’t handle some criticism or a little insult. Yet you constantly sling them in the direction of YOUR fellow journalists, cowturd, bspn, pff monkeys or whatever, the list goes on. YOU’RE supposed to be the professional, I’m just some jackass on a message board. Grow a sack, cry baby.
October 18th, 2019 at 11:20 am
Joe’s not convinced (yet). GREAT start. His agent is also Drew Rosenhaus. Unless Shaq is franchised you know he will hit the open market.
October 18th, 2019 at 11:21 am
OJ Howard for Trent Williams. Is that creative enough?
October 18th, 2019 at 11:22 am
BUCLUV55:
No clue what you are talking about.
October 18th, 2019 at 11:26 am
No clue sounds about right.
October 18th, 2019 at 11:28 am
The Bucs have ZERO interest in making moves to improve the team for the rest of the season, don’t you get that?
At 2-4, and having seen how many holes there are in the roster, and that so many young prospects on our Defense didn’t work out, they’re in full on TANK MODE at this point to let the season play out with the weak roster as it is…
With Winston’s crap-the-bed London performance, it’s all but guaranteed the front office (Glazers included) is now firmly looking to the Draft to find Winston’s replacement…
They’re not about to screw up their draft position by winning a bunch of meaningless games this season that won’t get them into the playoffs. They also know how badly a mid 1st round pick works out when drafting a QB (see: Freeman). The Bucs know they’ll need to be in the Top 7 to get a solid QB prospect.
Look for the Bucs to make any moves to make the team WORSE at this point, not better.
October 18th, 2019 at 11:29 am
How about Suh for a 3rd or 4th round pick?
October 18th, 2019 at 11:33 am
If this team just sits on its hands at the trade deadline, then Joe’s going to go mental. – Joe
Then prepare to go mental. When is the last time we made a trade as the deadline approached?
I’m not saying it is impossible, but if your mental health rides on going against the odds, then seek help now, before the skyway beckons. 😉
October 18th, 2019 at 11:38 am
Why not keep Barrett and sign Yannick Ngakoue in the off season? JPP will not be here.
October 18th, 2019 at 11:40 am
Joe, Barrett may not have the extended resume, but he’s just entering his prime. This is the time in his career when developing players are expected to take a leap, and he has. That is a very good sign.
October 18th, 2019 at 11:40 am
I think Barrett will have a new deal before this season ends.
October 18th, 2019 at 12:02 pm
Jason Licht was extended through 2024.
Brace yourself, all the armchair GM’ing we do here doesn’t add up to a hill of beans.
To make matters worse BA really appears to be a vacation pay earning BS artist, who got his old band together for one last world tour (heist)
#Londoncalling
October 18th, 2019 at 12:03 pm
Hope so!
October 18th, 2019 at 12:06 pm
We’ll probably pick up another receiver or two.
October 18th, 2019 at 12:06 pm
No one knows the specifics of that contract but the Glazers, Licht, Licht’s agent and possibly Arians.
For all we know it could be a five-year series of one-year contracts. Or it could be loaded with buyout clauses. Or there could be an escape clause for the Glazers after two years if x-amount of wins are not met, etc. We do not know if it is an ironclad five-year contract.
Besides, the Glazers have demonstrated they are not concerned with paying people to stay home. They fired Chucky and Bruce Almighty one year after giving them an extension.
“This Joe” doesn’t believe it is 100 percent locked in that Licht and or Arians is here in February. They likely are but Joe’s not betting his house they will be.
October 18th, 2019 at 12:08 pm
Trade jameis to the chiefs for a #1 send him now and get matt moore to be the bucs qb for the rest of the season
October 18th, 2019 at 12:33 pm
Shaq has not been invisible he has been super close to multiple sacks his rushes make the Qb move not his fault no 1 else stepping up
October 18th, 2019 at 12:51 pm
Bonzai is probably right.
Licht never pulls the trigger when he should before the draft deadline.
DJax and Softie being prime examples last year.
October 18th, 2019 at 1:04 pm
lol….
joe aint convinced shaq is a keeper but he’s convinced JW deserves to be resigned….lol….
#fsunuthuggers……
GO BUCS!!!!!
October 18th, 2019 at 2:07 pm
Hey, can we creatively swap GMs?! Asking for a friend.
October 18th, 2019 at 4:11 pm
Sorry to say but this season is a bust! Regroup trades and draft picks for olinemen which is critical so your qb can flourish.Find a DB that can cover ,develop the ones on the roster that you can.Unload dead weight on the rest of the roster ,franchise Jameis for next year and if he can’t perform with good blocking .Draft a QB in 2021.And then dump the GM and staff and start from scratch.I always had a feeling Licht and Arians were expecting a Mulligan from the fan base this year.Long suffering fan base has little patience! Can’t blame us.
October 18th, 2019 at 8:07 pm
“This makes too much sense.” This idea is ridiculous. I remember reading over and over this off season about how bad we need a pass rusher. Countless articles about Dee Ford for a 2nd rounder. Now we have a guy who has 9 sacks to Ford’s 3.5 and you want to trade him?
October 18th, 2019 at 8:57 pm
Joe spelled out the reasons why in the story.
October 19th, 2019 at 1:22 am
Shaq is a LOSER!!!!
He’s 2-4 and we all know football is a 1-on-1 game!
Shaq Barrett couldn’t even beat Gerald McCoy in London!
Shaq couldn’t even beat the Giants garbage pass-rushers at home in Tampa!
We need to dump Shaq’s LOSING behind and draft a pass rusher instead!
HAHAHAHA … THAT IS EXACTLY HOW MOST TALK ABOUT JAMEIS … SOOOO STUPID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
October 19th, 2019 at 1:24 am
As for Joe’s idea … I don’t know. I’d be worried Yannick would bust in Tampa … Shaq put up 9 sacks with no other notable pass-rusher beside him while Yannick was on “Sacksonville” and had talent all around him on the defensive side of the ball.
If you tell me we’re swapping Shaq for Yannick, I’m nervous.
If you tell me we’re trading Shaq to the Ravens for (2) 1sts I’m happy.
October 24th, 2019 at 11:56 am
If the Bucs are in a sure fire hurry to trade someone, how about lazy ass D. Smith. Of course that won’t happen since he seems to be a BA favorite & we’re already thin at OL.
