Changes tune on America.
Max Kellerman has issued a mea culpa of sorts.
The co-host of “First Take,” seen and very much heard on BSPN, standing before a court of pompon-shaking Clemson cheerleaders as witnesses, recanted on a long-held belief that America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, is an immature fraud who could not be trusted with a football.
This morning, standing in front of the world, Kellerman admitted he is wrong, at least through five weeks of the NFL season.
Not only did he admit Jameis has been a top-tier quarterback this season, Kellerman went so far as to suggest Jameis is playing nearly as good as a top-10 quarterback in the NFL.
“Jameis Winston is playing very well this year,” Kellerman said. “I’m not a fan. I would have moved on from him. I did not think — I thought he was a bust.”
As one might imagine, Kellerman’s cohort, screamin’ Stephen A. Smith, had remarks about Jameis as well.

That’s why these guys are a clown show. Winston has been in 1 system his entire career and that system’s QB isn’t exactly tearing up the NFL at this moment. Shouldn’t these so called experts be able to figure that out when I, Dapostman a layman can? We all know Winston has not benefited from a run game, a defense or a kicker his first 4 years. Well except for 2015 he had a run game and in 2016 his defense played good for 5 games. Outside of that it’s been an utter sh*t show around an immature kid thrown to the wolves to save Buc nation as a 21 year old.

Joe, you can keep parading these ‘media gurus’ assessments’ in front of us all you want to make your case for Jameis, but almost every JBFer has already figured out who Jameis is. No we don’t all share the same assessment, but the vast majority I bet would boil it down to ‘Good Jameis – Bad Jameis’. Probably more like ‘Inconsistent Jameis’.
You’ve now blamed the Bucs’ defense, you’ve blamed the OLine, you’ve blamed various receivers, you’ve blamed coaching, and sometimes (rarely) you’ve even blamed Jameis. Most of us have likely decided by this point that the answer to that multiple-choice question is “All of the Above”. And in the process … NOTHING IS CHANGING.

These clowns clearly don’t watch Bucs games, if they had they’d realize that most of Jameis’s turnovers aren’t his fault, they were the fault of the terrible playcalling of one Dirk Koetter who expected him to make low percentage throws on a regular basis.

No QB in NFL History has had more EXCUSES made for him than Mr. Jameis Winston.
Defense Rules is 100% RIGHT. NO ONE can argue against the fact that Winston is INCONSISTENT. He shows flashes of solid play and then he craps the bed.
All good QBs have bad games, so it’s not about being expected to play perfectly all the time. It happens in the NFL, great teams get upset by weaker teams, great players have off games.
It’s not about having the occasional, once-in-a-great-while bad game. Winston, like clockwork, has absolutely terrible games that make so many question if he should even have a starting job in the NFL, let alone be extended at $30M+/year.
Every time we as Bucs fans hear the JAMEIS HYPE that “this time it will different in a new system” or “this time you’ll really see how special he is he just needed a better coach” or “THIS TIME…” this or “THIS TIME…” that…
Every. Single. Time. IT NEVER HAPPENS.
Jameis does’t “break-through” to a higher level of player and more consistency. He makes the same mistakes he made in his 1st season as a rookie. He still holds the ball too long, at times struggles with accuracy issues (passes of all different distances, not just long passes), and makes bad decisions.
Jameis has a good few decent games this season, no doubt. But he’s had some good stretches and games BEFORE. Every year for 4 years he occasionally puts up a great game. But it’s that lack of CONSISTENCY and PROGRESS into becoming a BETTER QB.
I see nothing in Jameis this season that would make anyone think he has IMPROVED. He’s the same Jameis he has always been. You get exactly what you think you get with him.
Joe and so many on this site that are big Winston fans put so much focus on the “Good Jameis” games and feel that somehow one day we’ll all wake up and that will be the norm for Jameis and he’ll play like that 80% of the time. Still have some bad games (which again, all QBs do) but he’ll SOLID ‘most of the time.’
There’s only one big problem with that… IT’S NOT HAPPENING. He’s not playing better and more consistent.
Yet here we are…. holding out “HOPE” that this guy turns the corner and becomes that better player somehow. That he becomes a good or great NFL QB worth the $30M-$35M per year massive Salary Cap hit.
And it still hasn’t happened yet. We’re still waiting. Yet so many want to just go ahead and give this guy a massive extension which will set this team back 5-7 MORE YEARS if Winston doesn’t improve.

Dude, did you even watch the game or only read the box score?
Jameis was 9/19 for 105 total passing yards (and a 5.5 avg) when the game mattered until late in the 4th quarter. Late in the 4th when the game was over and we were behind by 2 TDs, he put another 100 yards against a prevent defense running out the clock and he threw that 2nd TD pass for his stats.
Only a casual fan would claim that Jameis played “well” against the Saints.

That’s cute and all and a good analysis but the one thing you guys are all failing to realize it that this season we had one game of bad jameis and he’s been GOOD JAMEIS SINCE! THAT’S 4 games of good jameis.
So keep talking about the rollercoaster but this one has been going up for over a month.
Some of you are just praying for the dip. It’ll come cuz it does for all qbs but expect it to be going up more than ever… for the next 5 years!!

Winston looked out of rythum at the start of the Saints game.
I was defiently expecting a little better but it was nothing too vulgar(like his San Fran performance)…..He did seem to settle in and was a good sign to see us tie it up at 10-10.
Then the 2nd half happened and our OL took a nosedive……The OL gave us no stability and made it nearly impossible to get back in it. Somehow we still had our chances but seemed like Everytime we had a critical drive there was a collapse in the OL……Seeing Dotson laying belly up was basically a nail in the coffin…..yet we still had another shot after Dotson was gone and his replacement got destroyed and ruined another drive.
Good QBs lose when pressure cannot be contained.

Bandit, you always conveniently omit the surrounding circumstances when evaluating play. Ignoring context is a surefire way down the path of neuroticism. Yes, he left a lot to be desired against the Saints, he was also running for his got dam life on many snaps – and you could make an argument that those 6 sacks should have been doubled if not for his mobility. What kind of production exactly are you expecting on a day like that? You need him to score 35 on the road against Teddy Bridgewater because your defense has the worst secondary on Earth? You talk a bunch about how long you’ve been around evaluating football but uh… that ain’t how football works, chief. Does he have more time than he thinks on some plays? no doubt, but not on the days that his protection holds up. On those days, he sets his footwork and rips it before he starts thinking. Does he miss a check down every so often? YEP! He has a lot to work on man, but let’s put the magnifying glass down and stop burning the ants now…
All this coming from a guy who’s all “I’ll admit he’s playing better so i’ll reserve judgement until the end of the year!” one week and then “SEE! How inconsistent of him to play a Super Bowl contender on the road and not put up 35 to squeak by with a win!” the next.
Fickle. Neurotic. Meanwhile he’s picking up this offense faster than any previous Arians’ QB. Let’s see if the secondary improves and hope they start scheming looks to their 3rd and 4th receivers named Brate and Howard.

BucsBandit……While you are on the subject of how Winston performed when the game mattered I think it is imperitive you got back and look at the 2 drives we had in the fourth(or late third) right after N.O. went up 31-17……These were both very critical drives where we had a chance to answer back and make it a competitive game.
Both drives started the same way. SACK. On first down. And both sacks happened basically right off the snap. The OL has to give you a chance buddy……..
Oh and the drive we had before N.O. scored and we had a chance to toe? Presnap pentalty on the OL…..Backem up. OL gotta give you a better chance buddy.

Do you people watch other football games? So many clueless “fans here” if the nfl is a what have you done for me lately league it’s kinda ignorant to talk about previous years under a different coach in a new year when he is playing well.
Quarterbacks usually don’t play well when o line nor blocking well and receivers aren’t getting separation. No Winston isn’t the most accurate but he’s not the first overall pick to be inaccurate Ala cam newton meaning he can still have success, hes never had a middle of the pack defense so with the exception of hall of famers like brady and brees you will lose.

I assume that it’s the New Orleans game you’re talking about. As I look back at the game, Bucs’ offense did it to themselves. As a matter of fact, IF the offense had been able to sustain drives I think 2 things would’ve resulted: (1) Bucs would’ve scored at least 1 TD MORE; and (2) as a result of them having less time on the field, the Saints MIGHT have ended up scoring 1 LESS TD.
But alas, that’s not how it went down. The Bucs offense started the game with THREE straight punts. in that time, the Bucs’ defense held the #2-ranked Saints to ONE FG, and intercepted Bridgewater giving the Bucs’ offense a very short field at the NO 20-yard line. Jameis got sacked on the 1st down, then threw a TD on the next, as we went up 7-3. That’s the 1st qtr.
Saints offense responded with a TD to start the 2nd qtr, but the Bucs offense responded with a FG, so it’s now 10-10 … still hanging tough 2/3 way through the 2nd qtr. But the Saints score right before the half on an impressive drive making it 17-10. The biggest play of that drive? The penalty on Carlton Davis: 15-yards PLUS he got ejected. The ballgame turned against the Bucs at that point.
Saints came out to open the 3rd qtr and marched down the field in THREE plays for a TD. TWO deep passes with 1 rush in-between, one pass for 42 yds to Michael Thomas & a second pass to Ted Ginn for 33 yds for a TD. BAM … Bucs are now behind 24-10 and the half has barely begun. Is THAT the hole that you’re talking about? Would Carlton Davis have made a difference? I don’t know. But having our best CB out there certainly MIGHT have.
Anyways, the Bucs’ offense responded with a TD of their own (nice 17-play drive) on the next possession & closed it to 24-17 with only 5 mins to go in the 3rd qtr. Bucs defense forced the Saints to punt, then our offense went 3-and-out. Saints responded with a 13-play drive of their own that ended in a TD, putting NO up 31-17. Is that the hole you were talking about?
Bucs then responded with TWO failed drives … one a 3-and-out the other a 5-and-out after our defense held them. Yes we did score one more TD against a prevent defense, but NO was most likely just letting us run out the clock (most of our plays stayed in-bounds). So we end up at 31-24 but the reality is that we could’ve been on the winning side of that score IF not for that ejection, and IF we hadn’t wasted so many plays (SIX very short drives killed us). Far too many wasted plays; too many sacks (6) & TFLs (8) & too many wasted deep balls that killed drives. So again, WHO put the QB in the freaking hole?

DR…..Sorry for not being specific but I was talking about the N.O. game and was referring to the two drives we had right after they pushed the sore to 31-17. We had two drives that started with that score and each time on the first play of the drive we gave up a QB sack that essientially forced us to punt 2 plays later. These were critical drives where we had a chance to make it a tight game and both time the QB never had much of a chance to get us started.
If we wanted to see a franchise QB that can win us amazing games in a heroic fashion we need to have decent blocking in front of him. That’s called TEAMWORK.
And the drive before those two I mentioned when the score was 24-17 our first play result was a presnap pentalty by the OL. So yes, they did put our QB in a hole for them 3 drives. And those were argubably the 3 most important drives of the game……….I understand that the Saints drives to end the 2nd half and start the third was the main turning point of the game…….Those were there most critical drives. Our Bucs most critical drive were the three I mentioned and each and every one started with a negative play that the OL caused.

When push came to shove in that game our OL crumbled…….or their DL dominated. However you wanna look at it. Either way our trenches could not stop their when it was most needed……..Not that our OL was doing such a great job earlier in the game. Their 1st half performance was not very good at all.
Those critical drives just seem to stick out most to me. And that scene of Dotson laying bellyup while the Saints take control has haunted my otherwise sweet dreams. It was freaking embarrassing.

It’s my opinion Winston has the talent to match those 31 points in that game and find a way to eat a W…….But is barely possible for that to happen when you got a chance to tie or get within a score and the OL submitts a negative play………The inability yo give us a chance to come back is the whole I’m talking about.

Again, this Secondary is not going to shut down elite receivers, at least not until they get 100% healthy- J Dean, DWhite, J Evans.

Quite the contrary JimmyJack. The MAIN culprit IMO was that the Bucs’ OLine didn’t protect Jameis in those last series. We now know that Cappa was playing with a broken arm & Dotson had been replaced by Wells (who is also on the injury list I believe). Plus the Saints’ DLine dominated and they wanted it more than the Bucs did obviously. I guess that’s why they’re the 2nd-ranked in terms of Power Rankings this week.
And yes, Jameis has the talent to match those 31 points that the Saints put up IMO, but our OLine doesn’t. Also the play-calling didn’t help any … they needed a LOT MORE quick passes to keep the defense honest instead of teeing off.
3-and-outs are murderous. Far too often those come early in the game & we end up in a hole if our defense can’t hold the line. And with a young defense that’s often gonna be the case. The Bucs play MUCH BETTER as a TEAM when they play from IN-FRONT and can control the game.

Alanbucsfan … Excellent summary & spot on. I’m not convinced that Dean will ever be 100% healthy for extended periods of time. Having Devin White back this week will help reduce the short passes over the middle (I HOPE), and I don’t expect Justin Evans back at least this year (recent surgery?). My hope is that (1) Carlton Davis can stop with the penalties; (2) Dean or SMB or Ryan Smith step up at the other outside corner; (3) that VHIII is finally moved either to the bench or to nickel. He’s killing us. And yes, there’s a VERY GOOD CHANCE that the Bucs’ offense will need to score 27-Plus each game for us to have a winning season. Building experience in the Secondary will take time.

Jameis play ATROCIOUS in Week 1.
He played C+ ball against the Panthers. Had many drives where he wasn’t productive at all, and barely had over 200 yards in total passing in that game. We were a VHIII tackle away from losing that game and a lot more attention would have been put on Winston’s mediocre game.
He played fantastic in the 1st half against the Giants… and against the WORST SECONDARY IN THE NFL. But he disappeared in the 2nd half and didn’t do much of anything, which gave them the chance to make the comeback. He DID have a final great drive and Gay should have pulled off the win. But the fact remains, Winston had MANY other chances in that 2nd half so it didn’t have to come down to a last second FG.
Jameis played a PHENOMENAL game against the Rams. So much so I had actually thought maybe he had finally turned the corner and improved as player.
Jameis put up a stinker of a game against the Saints. The final stats don’t tell the story as half his passing yards and that last TD pass to Godwin came when the game was already over late in the 4th. He had only 105 total passing yards when the guy mattered. That’s really bad.
So he’s had one awesome game, another game were he was fantastic in the 1st half (albeit against the worst secondary in the NFL), another guy where was he decent but not great, and then two games where he STUNK IT UP.
I’d hardly say he’s been playing great ever since the Week 1 catastrophe.
Winston is the epitome of inconsistent and we MUST get rid of him.

OH and don’t even get me started all on the dropped INTs and INTs called back due penalties that Winston has thrown this season and gotten away with. Anyway with decent eyesight knows that Winston could have very easily had 4 INTs against the Saints.

You discount JW’s game against the Giants, when Daniel Jones also played great … yet TOM BRADY played far, far,, far, far worse against those same Giants in a game where Jones played terrible.

July Joe – the guy literally threw INTs that were called back. So, yes, I like many other Bucs fans will mention them because they could have easily be booked INTs. If you clowns are going to make excuses when a ball goes off someone’s hands and ends up as an INT for Winston, then surely it’s fair criticism to rate Winston poorly during all the times he DID actually get it picked off but only had it called back, or when it easily could have been an INT that someone dropped after it hit them in the hands.

Jameis is not a bust, but is he a $30+ million per hear qb? Hell no! He is still too inconsistent to be given a big contract that will bog down our salary cap. Franchise him and let him prove he can be consistent, or just wash your hands of hm. I hope that he finds consistency, but right now, he is still the same guy he was 5 years ago.

Why do yall like to talk about what should have been a interception ?? You could go back and look at every single game last week regardless of who the quarterback is and find what should have been a interception. When yall start talking about what should have been a interception and it’s a stat that don’t count man want don’t yall go root for another team . Yall say inconsistent but he’s been playing good for 4 games in a row when will yall look at the rest of the team. I said this at the beginning of the season. It doesn’t matter how good Jamies plays he will get the blame for every lost regardless how well he plays.

That’s just not true. Lol. That’s YOUR analysis and you’re entitled to your own opinion but he played solid vs the saints. He played much better than you’re admitting against the Panthers. 2 very solid defenses. The ol and refs are what sucked vs the saints. I mean I read several analysts columns on his game vs the saints and it’s nowhere bear what you’re saying. You evidently don’t like the guy so he could have a game with 3 quarters at 300 yards 3 TDs and throw 2 ints in the other quarter and you would say he sucked.
The majority of the season he’s been great and yes he sucked bad week 1. Against a great team by the way.
Can’t wait for the stretch of mediocre teams coming up but Sunday is huge.
