Breakout

October 8th, 2019

Gets props.

As Bucs fans are down in the dumps after the Bucs got worked over Sunday in the Big Easy, there is one thing to be positive about.

And that is the play of Bucs wide receiver Chris Godwin. The Penn State product, now given a full chance at a full-time job at wide receiver, has become one of the most solid if not dependable receivers in the game.

That’s not lost on Nate Davis of USA Today who knighted Godwin as the breakout star of the NFL for 2019.

With another seven grabs for 125 yards and two scores, Tampa Bay WR Chris Godwin continues to be the breakout star of 2019.

Now that Bucco Bruce Arians has proved his premonition of Godwin becoming a stud (not that it was much of a reach), now it is time for Arians to go into his lab and find ways to scheme open O.J. Howard and Cam Brate.

You cannot tell Joe that when Mike Evans gets taken out of a game by two (or more?) defenders that there isn’t an opportunity available for Howard to stretch the field or even Brate. Hell, Joe’s seen it happen.

It disturbs Joe to think offensive coaches believe Scotty Miller is a more reliable target than Howard or Brate.

Is Winston’s confidence so shot that he can’t really throw it to Godwin, Evans and friends? Are they trying to run Miller in the plays to reinstill confidence in Winston?

What is the offensive play calling supposed to be? The Buccaneers can actually run the ball, but the throwing game is something to be desired.

  2. PragueBucsFan Says:

Cappa broke his arm, well that explains the Oline collapse. Tough dude.

But its the sudject of this article that concerns me the most. Brate and OJ are proven commodities on 3rd down and killer in the red zone. Hey Byron, ME is doubled and you need to move the chains? Throw it to the TEs! Who the h*ll is Scotty Miller?

  3. ATLBuc Says:

I think Jameis threw to Miller too many times

  4. Jean Lafitte Says:

Game plan was surely an experiment that didn’t pan out. I think Lefty thought Miller would be ignored and Jameis would have the advantage. Game planning will be totally different against the Panthers.

Advice for BA and Lefty. Don’t experiment until the latter half. Use your most lethal weapons but most importantly give Jameis a chance.

Use a Quick passing game. Godwin is getting a lot of single man coverage and is thriving. He’s catching 10 yard slants all day. When they slide coverage onto Chris it will free up Mike. Try Mike in the slot and flank Watson to the outside.

Hey, here’s a classic suggestion …Run Vida Vea at the goal line.

  5. BA Redzone Says:

JW3 is always counting on “Bobo, Scotty & Justin” to be in the right place….and they are not …results in misses or interceptions. I have no confidence….

Payton B also, seems to be out of alignment in pass game. Not sure about Rojo…

Mike E, Godwin and Brate —- are always in the right place for JW3 passes.

OJ has to step up his game… CATCH the ball!

  6. John Says:

Guess Miller isn’t a Humphries clone after all.

  7. Bob in Valrico Says:

There have been too many holes on this team in areas with much more serious
needs than WR.The WR group was more than adequate without any additions.
Jason Licht needs to stop chasing these late round receivers. Robert Herron ,Kenny Bell and now Scotty Miller. WE don’t have time for Jameis to develop
chemistry with another receiver more like DJAX than Hump. Hump had average height at least and well chiseled to take the punishment that goes with a slot receiver.
Once again we have serious depth issues in the secondary and O line. Our ‘best”
cover corner is tied for third for most penalties in the league. Now he is suspended. VH3 has struggled against tall fast receivers since he came into the league.
I have been vocal about getting Dotson”s replacement in the fold for some time. So now with both Dot and Kappa injured we have to rely on journeyman backups.

Might as well use these late round picks to address more serious needs than
WR and develop some diamonds in the rough.

“My Dad stated this exact problem 5 weeks ago

He said this QB coach intern is unqualified as a playcaller and the scheme and play design doesnt suit the strength and skillset of our playmakers

My Dad demands an formal apology from the low football IQ Kobe Nasayers…or money”

  9. Bird Says:

We win and it’s all hail Arians and Leftwich and give all the credit to one player not named Godwin (cmon -you know who)

We lose and Tampa is literally on fire and it’s everyone’s fault , the coaching sucks and mike Evans is overrated. So is LVD . But that same certain player deserves no blame

You all are losing it !

  10. Bird Says:

    Son of kobe faker

Is it first hand or second hand knowledge ?

  11. Bucsfanman Says:

Bird- Yeah, saw on another thread that we need to “trade Mike Evans”! LOL!

Any way, I knew this kid would be special. It’s nice to see him succeed. What a steal!

  12. Razor Ramone Says:

As often as we’ve seen tight ends take over games (Greg Olsen, Tony Gonzalez,Jimmie Grahm) I can’t understand us totally freezing out our TWO potential game wreckers. Especially if the other team has neutralized number 13.

  13. 813bucboi Says:

OJ and brate arent as athletic as kittle…..

we saw what happened when brate takes a hand off…lol..no wiggle, no speed, no gain….kittle takes a hand off and it can go to the house…..

imo, i think OJ is still hampered by his ankle injury….he has zero burst and cant out run LB’s like he did a year or 2 ago…..

and its not making it any better that both of their blocking has been suspect this year…..

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  14. Buc50 Says:

Scotty Miller was taking turns on the outside. Humphries was mostly in the slot. Please stop throwing to Scotty on the outside.

  15. VA Tom Says:

Just means with our salary cap situation we cant keep Evan’s AND Godwin. In fact with our salary cap its conceivable someone’s gonna have to come in and clean house. Or we are going to have the highest paid center, highest paid QB (when they pay him) and the highest paid receiver on a perennial 4 and 12 team 🙄

  16. a-bomb Says:

Pretty obvious that Leftwich was trying to free up Evans by establishing Miller as a deep threat. I just do not see why the same thing could not done with Howard and Brate. Howard and Brate running seam routes are our zone busters, but when the other teams play zone we tend to take them out of the game. There are things about the playcalling I don’t understand. Put Evans, Godwin, Brate, Howard and RoJo as your base personnel and then go no huddle. No team in the NFL can match up to that grouping.

  17. bucnole Says:

The only thing I put on Winston is holding the damn ball too long – just throw it away!
The OL got stomped – we didn’t run enough – WTF was Dare getting throws in the red zone??? Scotty Miller instead of Brate/Howard??? The play calls and position groupings were just all wrong IMO. . . this needs to change cuz as I mentioned in another comment – the Saints just told the rest of the league how to beat the Bucs
    Hope Im wrong

  18. BA FAN Says:

If O.J. is not up to par with a hurt ankle put Auclair in his place. He can catch as well as O.J. and is tougher and a better blocker and is as big as O.J. but not quite as fast. When a team brackets Evans then go with two TE sets and get Auclair and Brate in there with Godwin and bring in Jones who can also flare out for short passes from Jameis and just hit short passes until you have Jameis in rhythm. When our OC is getting out Coached, BA has to be able to take over play calling and let our OC observe how to do it.

  19. m0j0 Says:

I don’t recall one WR screen in that game against the Saints, or one quick pass to Evans for that matter. Seems like they could have done a lot better job getting our top targets involved in the game. Game planning was not on par with the Rams game, but we had a lot more time to prepare for that one.
