Keep Raheem The Dream
January 4th, 2010One of the more respected scribes in the Tampa Bay area, Gary Shelton of the St. Petersburg Times, has made his feelings known about Raheem the Dream.
Shelton addressed whether the head coach should be tossed over the side for getting three wins out of the Bucs — pretty much what most expected prior to the season — or whether he should get another year.
Shelton says… Keep Raheem the Dream.
The questions are obvious, and yes, they are fair. No one should get a pardon for losing 10 more games than he won in a season. No one should be happy that the second half of the season didn’t stink quite as badly as the first. It was an awful season, and parts of it were like watching fruit rot.
And despite it all, I would bring Morris back.
I would bring Morris back because he’s a better coach than he was six games ago and because the Bucs are a better team. I would bring him back because the players still seem to believe in him. I would bring him back because, when you look at the talent, what did you expect?
Shelton’s points, as usual, are sound. Joe knows people point to the lack of crowds at games, as if that should be Raheem the Dream’s fault. Buzz and glitz and rock star-name coaches only go so far. Winning is what matters.
Don’t believe Joe? Just ask Chucky and Bobby Bowden.

Key paragragh in the article Shelton states “Barring the availability of Cowher”. It appears Shelton is advocating keeping Morris only if Cowher is not available.

You know Joe part of me wants to see Raheem back–but in the final analysis did you see any improvement in his wonder-boy quarterback from week 7 until now?
Didn’t think so……and doesn’t that answer what Morris’ fate should be!
(Oh yeah don’t anybody give me how the “players are backing him”! Weren’t the players behing Gruden? Behind Dungy? All depends on who you ask!)

Snippet from an ESPN article:
“There appears to be a problem with the rumors linking Cowher to the Bucs, however. Warren McCarty of ESPN 1440 (via Pro Football Talk) has word that Raheem Morris and his staff have been told they’ll be back for 2010.”

Jeff:
Joe’s been over that report many times, the first shortly after Florio posted it around midnight Saturday night.

I would like to see raheem morris and olson fired cuz there is not direction on offense and not just the oFfense as a football team in general! Fire raheem and save our team!!

If they give raheem another year they will loose a lot of season ticket holder and they will lose more games than they did this year cuz raheem and dominic and olson don’t know how to coach. They r not a winning trio and they won’t be I’m sure of it.

If they start winning the seats will be filled. There is no way to know for sure that Morris will not come out next year much improved. Plenty of great coaches had really bad rookie seasons. An off season with the offense all working together in one system will help. If they draft well on defense this team will be much better next year. One thing that the more successful teams have in common is continuity at the coaching and QB position. Rebuilding efforts take time, and if they fir Morris the next coach would be starting the rebuilding all over again.
