“It’ll Be A Test To Our System”
September 18th, 2019Sunday represents a very intriguing matchup for the Bucs offense.
Why? New York Giants defensive coordinator James Bettcher held the same job for Bruce Arians in Arizona for three seasons after Todd Bowles bolted for the Jets head coaching job after the 2014 campaign.
Bettcher himself was trained by Bowles, Arians discussed on the Buccaneers Radio Network, and the Bucs are preparing for “every blitz known to man.”
Arians added: “It’ll be a test to our system this week.”
It definitely will be a chess game. Fresh in Bettcher’s mind should be Jameis Winston torching the Giants in New Jersey last season. Jameis entered the game in relief of Ryan Fitzpatrick and was 12-for-16 for 199 yards and two touchdowns and an interception. Bettcher’s blitzes did little to faze Jameis, who was coming in cold off the bench.
Perhaps the blitzes won’t come the way Arians thinks they will?
Regardless, Arians emphasized on the radio that blitz pickup is a massive focus of every practice during game week before the offense moves on to the run game and the passing game tailored to the opponent.
“If you can’t handle pressure, that’s all you’re going to get,” he said.

We should be well prepared for the blitz because our defense blitzes constantly therefore I presume we practice against it.

Simple solutions for complicated problems-
Screen passes. Quick slants. Designed rollouts.
Maybe somebody can tell the OC.

2 minute drill plays and short intermediate passes to TEs over the middle won’t hurt either.

Also what Slugg said. I recall Joe doing an article showing JW having one of the highest completion percentages on roll out.

If Leftwich and his Highschool offense can’t torch this defense of the Giants then he’s as awful as I thought

I expect a big game from Winston and Evans, and hopefully even OJ. Winston was being super careful last week and Leftwich called a terrible game, but they got the win so people don’t think about it. Winston needs to go out this week, be himself and put up some points. Also Leftwich needs to do a dramatically better job calling the games, so far this year he’s be horrible – super predictable, defenses are just sitting on his predictable screen passes, he’s been awful. With that said it’s very early in Leftwich’s career as an OC and it’s only game three of the season – still, just show some progress.
Also, I don’t know if it’s just me or not, but I do wonder if Winston is hearing two completely separate things. Arians is telling him to play ball, to air it out, to be himself, but just from the body language and the way I see Leftwich talking to Winston – he’s not saying be yourself, he’s saying Winston can’t make a single bad play, has to be conservative, should not take chances, etc. I hope I’m wrong on that, that Leftwich isn’t sabotaging what Arians is saying, but I have not seen Leftwich show any type of body language that would make me think he wants anything other than a Mike Glennon game manager to run his super simple (so far) offense. If one of the Joe’s happen to see this and you know I’m wrong, please feel free to let me know.
