Saquon Barkley comes to town
Bucco Bruce Arians was reminded today that his defense completely suffocated stud running back Christian McCaffrey on Thursday.
And then a reporter suggested to Arians that the next opposing running back, Giants beast Saquon Barkley, is similar to McCaffrey.
Arians would have none of that.
“They’re on different planets; Saquon’s bigger, stronger faster. He’s got more 50-yard runs than anybody I’ve seen, I think, in a long, long time,” Arians said.
Sunday will be all about stopping Barkley, Arians said, even with the Giants switching quarterbacks to rookie Daniel Jones from New York icon Eli Manning. “It all starts and ends with [Saquon] and then we’ll try to contain the quarterback.”
Barkley mauled the Bucs last season with 142 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries. Just about every team keyed on Barkley last season and only about half could stop him.
The key Sunday as Joe sees it is to simply outscore the Giants. The Bucs are more than capable of that. If Barkley rolls up another big day, fine, then beat the woeful Giants 30-27.

He’s gone off the last 2 weeks with over 135 total yards each contest but the Giants are only averaging 15.5 PPG regardless.
He could have 150 yards an 2 TDs and their team still score under 20 easy with the lack of other play makers. I think it’s basically just Evan Engram and “?” at WR.
And yes the key is definitely to outscore the opponent to win lol

Remember when McCaffery entered Week Two as the league leader in snaps, touches and yards from scrimmage?
Different players, yes. But also a different defense than last year for the Bucs.
Keeping Saquon contained and the Giants in 2nd- and 3rd-and-long (+7yds) will be crucial.

Assuming that you’re right Joe and the Giants score 27 points, would a Bucs’ game-plan like last Thursday’s allow us to roll up say 30 points for the win? No turnovers … check. TOP 34 minutes … check. 25 passing attempts for roughly 200 yards & 1 TD … doubtful. 31 rushes for 100 yards & 1 TD … no way. Running on 55% of our plays sounds enticing, but it doesn’t provide a path for racking up 30 points with this Bucs’ team.
Why? Because we don’t have a home-run hitter like Saquon Barkley. Barkley’s been AVERAGING 7.8 YPC on 29 rushes in 2 games. Our bell-cow, Peyton Barber, is AVERAGING 3.7 YPC on 31 rushes in 2 games. Longest run Barber … 16 yards. Longest run Barkley … 59 yards. Advantage … Giants, in the running game.
Bucs advantage? Our defense and our passing game … IF ‘Good Jameis’ shows up. Or even ‘Decent Jameis’. IF ‘Bad Jameis’ shows up, then Katy bar the door.

Jameis should be able to have a good if not great game. Giants D is pretty weak all around.
We should be able to run it against them better than anyone we’ve played so far, opening up more passing lanes. Thought I guess we gotta see what’s up with RoJo’s injury. Him or Dare can break something open, Barber just doesn’t have that speed (though he’s good for consistent 3 – 5 yard pops fighting through traffic).
I’d like to see Byron get more creative this week as well. Don’t think we’ve been utilizing play action nearly enough.

A new Qb coming in is like a goal tender switch during a hockey game. Either it will boost everyone’s play on the field or it will continue the downward spiral. I lean more toward the latter. I do believe before and after the Qb switched that the Bucs should win this and I have picked them to win. I just hope this continued upward learning curve of new offense and defense continues. #GoBucs

I lean towards the former. I think it’s going to be evident for the rest of the season that Eli Manning has been holding that team back since 2017. I’m not predicting the Giants win this game because I think the Bucs will, but I think the Giants are going to be energized by the change. I hope the Bucs are ready.

In addition to stifling the run up the middle I’d like to see Suh and Vea get a sack this week. Just for the fun of it.
Not that I would mind seeing additional pressures and sacks from Barrett, Nassib, David, Minter, White, Davis or anyone else. A couple of INTs from our secondary would be welcome also.

The problem with “stuffing the run up the middle” is that Barkley can and does routinely bounce it outside successfully. Do I trust our secondary to tackle Barkley in open space? Not at all.
Over 100 yards rushing with more than 1 TD I’m calling it right now.

This is a “Welcome to the NFL” type of game all day long.
Shut down Barkley and bring some cruel intentions into that backfield all day!
That’s what real trench warriors do, unlike the old pansy #93 led defense.
This should be a statement game for the Bucs, attack the Giants all day, wear them out and get that home victory.

Our run D might be legit. The 49ers and Breida were rolling big time this week, but didn’t do much against us. McCaffery had a big first game, but didn’t do much against us. We might have a chance to slow Barkley down, but make no mistake, Barkley is on another level than those two. You can stop Drexler or Malone, but what’s Jordan going to do to you?

These guys have something else in common in my little corner of the nation. They both ran up and down the Iowa Hawkeyes defense like the Hawks were coached by Mike Smith.
CMC almost 300 total yards.
Barkley just over 200 total yards.

The Key is prevent TDs and only allow field goals. Same as they’ve been doing. Saquan will make some plays. Just don’t let them get TDs.

Of course we could try and run the offense through QJ across the middle as
as Kobe’s dad suggested. He has had two fumbles across the middle. How did that work out in game 1 ? OJ must have been reading his press clipping or maybe he’s been reading Kobe Faker posts. I don’t know how Leftwich’s playcalling will work out but at the end of the day Jameis and company have to execute it. Time for OJ to step up and be the talent he is.’ on the outside ala Vernon Davis.

Barkley is definitely the best RUNNING back in football. As for the switch to Jones, I personally wish it was going to be Eli. If you’ve followed the Bucs for any time at all, you know they have been abused by rookie and backup QBs.

Man Joe , with what I’ve seen from left-sandwhich or what u talkin bout Willis OC , our boys might have a hard time scoring 30 ! If they can do it against anyone it would be that Giants D…let’s hope it’s another grind it out game where our defense holds them to 16 points and bucs win 21-16…defence rules again and pretty soon someone will need to throw coach bowles a parade threw Tampa Town..go bucs

This is a trap game against a desperate team with the best RB in the league and a rookie QB that the Bucs have never seen before. We better bring our A game as this will not be easy. D better be prepared for a lot of trick plays.

It was my favorite moment from a very forgettable Bucs season.

As far as stopping Barkley it’s a way too obvisous key to the game. No doubt they try to keep it simple for the rookie QB.
Would be nice to force them into 3rd and long and let our passrush tee off……One thing is for certain and we will take away this kids ability to step up in the pocket with Vita V & Suh. Hopefully that’s a problem he has never encountered much…..I would guess he hasn’t. That’s the main reason why our Sapp led defenses destroyed young QBs……..I expect this defense to have the same capabilities.

If ya ask me the Giants are Picking a very bad game to start this kid.
I would like to personally thank them for adding fuel to our 🔥. No doubt our defense is going to take it personally.
This will no go well for the Giants…….Don’t know where the line is but I’m betting the under this week for Daniel Jones TDs because it will finish at zero.
In other betting news the Bucs have played to the under in both games. Last week was an easy call at 50( no idea where they come up with that #). This week scares me at 46 but I’m gonna keep riding the unders til they cool off.

I think JBF and some of you are using the wrong adjective in STOP SB. You dont stop him rather try and contain him. Minimize the rips of 20 yards or more. In the red zone make him earn every inch.
RE: Jones QB switch. I see this as not good for the Bucs. I expect him to give the NYG a lift. The change from Eli is long overdue.

Donuts you out your mind bro. Apparently you haven’t noticed but the Back C’s have ented a new Era if football. They are not about to let garbage teams like the Giants walk all over us. That team don’t even know who to play at the most important position. Their only chance is either a heavy dose of sheer luck or if we beat ourself which is not going to happen.
That’s cool though. You aren’t seen it yet and need more time. At the latest ypu’ll be there by the time we come out clean on our vaunted road trip……..Until then I’ll clue you in. That play we made against the Panthers in their house doesn’t happen if you are got something special brewing. In short, Dirk’s team would have never made that play if you give them 50 tries. Maybe once out of a hundred, maybe.

I hope you’re fooling someone with the Giants BA, cause you’re not fooling me. The gameplay going in against a rookie QB, especially in his first start, is to come at him from as many angles as often as you can. Screw Barkley. Pressure Daniel Jones with the kind of speed he’s never seen before, from directions he’s never anticipated before, and there’ll be turnovers. That’s the game plan.

this is a far weaker pass rush than the first 2 teams the bucs played, i’m looking forward to this one. That Saquon quote is a bit of an injustice to McCaffery but i get where coach was coming from.
