Record Broken

September 17th, 2019

Not yet replaceable.

Pat Mahomes is a damn good quarterback, yes? It’s something Joe thinks all Bucs fans can agree on.

Mahomes just broke an NFL record over the weekend, so the guy who held that record must have been pretty good, yes? Well, a good chunk of Bucs fans would holler, “No!”

Such is the case with America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston. Mahomes against the Raiders on Sunday established a new NFL record for quarterbacks younger than 24 throwing for 300-yard games. He now has 12.

His feat broke the previous record held by — you guessed it! — Jameis with 11.

Before Jameis, the record was held by Dan Marino, who now has a bust in Canton. Marino wasn’t exactly awful, was he?

There are Bucs fans who grind their gears each morning with the thought that Jameis quarterbacks their beloved Bucs. And the subset of this sect is batsheet crazy enough to lobby for Ryan Griffin to start for the Bucs. Imagine!

Joe will just quote the words of former Bucs coach Raheem Morris when asked about the antics of former Bucs defensive end Stylez White, “I will tolerate you until I can replace you.”

And to the best of Joe’s knowledge, a better quarterback than Jameis is not available. Unless you can con Marino out of retirement.

  1. Figures Says:

The gap between the two is much bigger.

KC has a terrible defense yet they “somehow” blow people out and win games.

    Wanna know the secret?

    You guessed it. TURNOVERS!!!

  2. TruckerBuc Says:

Don’t care. Next year draft is stacked with QBs. Why pay a turnover machine $30 million when you can start fresh? Jaboo needs to play like Rogers the rest of the year to make me comfortable.

  3. Colonel Angus Says:

Mahomes has 12 in just 19 games. That cat is the real deal!

  4. donuts Says:

Two of the three names in the image will be or are in the HOF. One will not. In the current passing NFL, 300 yards in a game for a QB is pedestrian.

  5. RustyRhinos Says:

I am waiting on a few of the other records Winston’s OWNS to fall, you know most INTs, most turnovers, most fumbles, as Ronde put oh my gawd he has all those records. Wow. I never knew that. So what else is different from Mahomes and Winston? The only stat that matters. WINS!
Yes we can all hope a fresh new 100 milion plus contract will make our QB play better the next four seasons than the last four. I won’t want to put my money on that.

  6. DooshLaRue Says:

    Mahommes?
    …….. Meh.

    Lower football IQ than JW
    Wasn’t pro-ready like JW
Didn’t have the “character issues” coming out of college like JW

All he does is win in a fantastic manner.

I don’t know about you but I prefer a QB that’s inconsistent, immature and overrated.

  7. Bob in Valrico Says:

I don’t place a very high importance on 300 yard games unless its a shootout .
Just to put it in perspective, none have won a superbowl so far with that amount of
300 yard games under their belt. Although Brady has passed for 300 yards four times in superbowls he only passed for 264 in his last victory.

  8. Boogie Says:

Mahomes also has a lot of talent around him including a running game and a competent HEAD COACH! Lovie Smith and Dirk Koetter were trash compared to future HOF Andy Reid. Arians is about to show you guys how bad the coaching was around here. Just give it time

  9. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

Clueless Joe strikes again focusing on stats and not game play

    Is Jameis awful? No
But hes Far from being good consistently and that’s what this team needs

  10. BrianS Says:

There is a difference when throwing 300+ yards and dominatin gthe game vs throwing 300+ yards because you are throwing 40+ times a game from behind.

  11. DB55 Says:

Joe any chance you can find the number of pressures, hits and sacks they have taken? Oh wait never mind Winston holds the ball too long I forgot.

  12. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … Why do you do this to yourself? And to us, your faithful minions? The Chiefs … under Andy Reid’s guiding hand and with Patrick Mahomes at the wheel … have a dynamic offense. It’s a PASSING offense (4955 passing yards & 50 TDs in 2018) with a rushing component just good enough to be complimentary (1855 rushing yards & 16 TDs, but with a 4.8 YPC average). They rushed on only 38.9% of their plays … PASSING offense. THAT’S why Mahomes is racking up the passing yards. Well that plus the fact that he’s the best new young QB to come out in over a decade.

Interestingly it’s still an inexpensive offense ($76 mil today) by Bucs’ standards (ours is $103 mil), thanks largely to Mahomes being on his first contract. But for some reason KC is even cheaper when it comes to defense ($50 mil today). Lots of salary Cap room, but their defense is terrible. Go figure.

Oh and BTW, Mahomes & the Chiefs have handily beaten 2 very mediocre teams this year (Jags & Raiders). And they once again did it mostly with passing (811 passing yards & 7 passing TDs versus 144 rushing yards & 1 rushing TD). Mahomes is once again on fire … 7 TDs, 0 INTs, with a TD in every 9.1% of his completions. Throwing for over 70% completion rate, converting 54% of his 3rd downs and has only been sacked twice thus far.

Do you REALLY want to compare Mahomes’ performances with Jameis’?

  13. Bucsfanman Says:

Slow your roll Joe! Just because Kahlua is coffee-flavored doesn’t mean it’s coffee!

  14. Hank Rearden Says:

Too many KC fans on this site. Ira is a horrible influence on yous people.

  15. Ocala Says:

A lot of Buc fans deserve to have Trevor Siemian as the QB

  16. 1sparkybuc Says:

Jamyth humpers need stats to correct what my eyes tell me….

  19. Bucsfanman Says:

DB55- I’m re-posting this to give some perspective on your argument:

    Bucsfanman Says:
    September 16th, 2019 at 4:10 pm

Deshaun Watson was sacked 62 times last year and currently holds the lead with 10. Winston has 6.
Somehow in 2018, under all that pressure, Watson managed a 4,000+ yd season and 26 TDs with only 9 INTs and 9 FUMs (18 turnovers) in 16 games not including the playoffs.
Jameis threw 14 INTs and had 7 FUMs (21 turnovers) in 5 less games in the same year. With 27 sacks through 11 games that’s an average of 2.5 sacks per game. Multiplied out to 16 games that’s around 40 sacks. 40 would actually be a career high BTW.
Soooooo, NOT a HOF QB comparison but quite telling.

    Bucsfanman Says:
    September 16th, 2019 at 4:23 pm

Just to drive the point home:

    21 TO/11 games= 1.9 TO*16 games= 30.4 TO
30.4 is 41% higher turnovers with 36% LESS QB sacks.

Of course, this is just from a numbers perspective!!!

  20. Bucsfanman Says:

DB55- Using a non-HOF QB for comparison, pressure is not the only culprit of turnovers. I mean, we keep saying that he is not this “guy” when he clearly IS THAT guy! These are individual stats, and no they don’t tell the whole story but, clearly they cannot be ignored.

  21. DooshLaRue Says:

Oh boy, DB55’s head is spinning……….bwtfdik?

  22. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

Joe, it’s simply idiotic to compare America’s Groper to Mahomes and Marino. Some of the dummies on here will lemmingly shout “hell yeah!”….but to the rest of the football knowledgeable world, it’s a joke. So what if they tossed Winston in at an early age? Ugh. And I suppose Winston would HOLD the record….oops…except for a four game suspension for grabbing the Uber driver’s crotch (“uber hassle”) and then being benched for sucking. All good.

  23. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

Here’s how other NFL cities see Winston. Headline from New Orleans’ WWL….4 things to expect for the New Orleans Saints without Drew Brees
Matchups with the Bucs, Jags and Cardinals are all winnable games with shaky quarterback situations, too.

  24. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

There are big lies…..little lies…..and then there are….. statistics.

Just when our heads are spinning from all the statistics someone says, “Just to drive the point home:”…..another statistic.

    Good grief!

  25. Bucsfanman Says:

    You’re welcome! 🙂

  26. Anonymous Says:

Look at DB55 finally catching on and putting 2 and 2 together. Its about time!

  27. mark2001 Says:

Mahomes isn’t on this team…Great QB…but not here. Here is how I see it regarding our QB, and I’ll leave it at this, from my perspective.

    1. When Jameis is on, does he play like a franchise QB? Yes
    2. Has Jameis failed to play like an NFL quality QB in some games? Yes
3.. If he plays often as he did in the SF game, will we be looking for another starting QB next year? Yes
    4. Does he have the physical skills to be a quality NFL QB? Yes.
    5. Does he have a better Defense, improving O line and running game to take some of the pressure off him? Does he have great coaching now, to assist him in his development, his technique, and mental aspects of the game? Yes.
    6. If Jameis plays good games consistently, like he did last Thursday, will he likely receive a long term contract next year? Yes.
    7. Do real Buc fans hope every player on this team will have a great year and a great future here, including Jameis? Yes.

So the only question is, will he or won’t he? And the truth is…we don’t know. Real Bucs fans hope so… Jameis haters hope not because their hate for Jameis is greater than their love for the team…Lovers don’t care because their love for Jameis is greater than their love for the team.

  28. BucsBandit Says:

If Jameis were so great there’d be no reason for the majority of NFL analysts to say he’s mediocre. I’ll said with the experts.

  29. DB55 Says:

Funny bc the experts said Mariota was great. And Brady was a 6th round pick so wtfdtk

  30. Defense Rules Says:

Excellent recap Mark. Should drive the point home, but to some it still won’t. Such is life.

  31. Dapostman Says:

Jameis Winston the last 8 1/2 games.

    15 TD / 5 real interactions + 2 last play hail marys.

Best 8 game stretch in turnover ratio means the arrow is pointing up. Only the WDS simpletons can’t figure it out.

  32. Dapostman Says:

    *interceptions.

  33. Pittsshore Says:

    Then the wheels fell off.

  34. Pittsshore Says:

Freudian slip DaPostman. 5 “real interactions” would be a career record for the fake narcissistic loser aka Apples McGoo

  35. Dapostman Says:

Pittsshore, aka Cliff Claven, Freudian slip? No. Auto correct.

    #Princetonmya*s

The numbers speak for themselves. 15/5. Live with it.

  36. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

“5 real interactions” is just effing HILARIOUS!!! A mistake? Yep. Just like drafting Winston!!!

  37. BucsBandit Says:

@DB55 – I am talking about what most NFL Experts say TODAY about Jameis Winston after his 4 years in the league. Not talking about pre-draft analysis, or before someone has played several seasons.

@Dapostman – now analyze how many of those 15 TDs were thrown when the team was behind 2 scores or more? Defenses play softer coverage when they know a team desperately has to catch up. When a team is up 28-10 they don’t mind giving up a TD late in the game (which is when most of Winston’s TDs happened.)

  38. Jean Lafitte Says:

We will never know until the day they make the change.

After decades of losing football, I’m not scared anymore.

That’s a tired argument in these parts Joe.

What do ya have to lose? …more football? HA!

  39. BucsBandit Says:

    Dapostman,

And as far as the “arrow is pointing up”… umm… NO.

Just look at Winston’s stats this season under Arians, “The QB Whisperer”…

    2 TDs, 3 INTs, a QB Rating of 69.

    That’s TERRIBLE.

And we all know that INT number could easily be 5 with the drops right in the hands of Kwon and Kuechly; but we’ll wash those out with the OJ deflection (still a high, hot throw) and Barber’s bad route.

So your boy is on pace for 16 TDS, 24 INTs this season. Not exactly a good trend.

  40. Dapostman Says:

More fake news from the bandit. I will not include Bucs in your name since you are clearly not a fan.

If you are a fan you watched the last 6 1/2 games from last season and should know the answer to your question.

    Giants 2/1*
    49’ers 2/0
    Panthers 2/0
    Saints 2/1*
    Ravens 0/1
    Cowboys 1/0
    Falcons 4/1

    49’ers 1/3
    Panthers 1/0

    *last play hail marys

There were not a lot of garbage stats other than the Giants and if the Bucs had a defense Winston would have brought home a win.

The numbers speak for themselves. 15/5.

  41. 2002WasALongTimeAgo Says:

Ex soap star turned GMFB host Kyle B. said the other morning, “If Jameis Winston stopped playing today, he’d be remembered for “eating W’s”. I would add turnovers. The young man has known he would be under a microscope, yet he has zero polish. He has lots of turnovers, though and losses. If Coach is correct, and it’s the WR’s…someone needs to take charge and hold them accountable. Are all of the egos so fragile that they can’t perform as well as SOME of their peers?

  42. knucknbuc Says:

lol imagine thinking mahomes and winston are even on the same plane. couldn’t be me. now quick @joe whats the win loss records between these two when they throw for 300+. difference between a real framchise qb and a game manager. mahomes throws for 300 and wins with a crappy defense. jameis throws for 300 and lose with dumb turnovers and crappy defence. they arent the same not even close actually.

  43. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

BrainS – actually the opposite of what you are saying is accurate. When you are behind and everyone knows you are throwing it because you have no running game, passing for 300+ yards is rather difficult and take some good QBing to amass those yards. Everyone talks about how good Evans is but somebody has to throw him the f$%&ing ball.

  44. Syl Says:

@Figures Andy Reid knows how to scheme people open. Mahomes is throwing passes to guys wide open with no one around. Look at the wide open players running loose with Jimmy G last sunday. Then look at Atlanta. You get the yards but Dirk was not great at scheming guys open.

  45. orlbucfan Says:

Last I read, Mahomes ain’t playing for a team that has suffered 5 head coaching changes in 12 friggin’ years. Geez, there are some class A yahoos on here!

  46. BucsBandit Says:

    @Dapostman,

The numbers don’t “speak for themselves” as there is more to it than that. If you score when you’re team is way behind, late in games, it no where near has the same value of scoring in the 1st half of the game to give your team a chance to compete. His lack of 1st half scoring has nothing to do with the Defense.

You Winston apologists just keep making excuse after excuse. Yet it’s obvious he doesn’t pass the EYE TEST. You watch Winston play with his happy feet and holding the ball too long and inaccurate passing and bad decisions, and anyone can objectively see he’s not elite – in fact, far from it.

Dude is a Turnover Machine. Leads the league in the last 4 years for INTs and is tied for fumbles lost.

He’s just not that good despite what you think. I admire your unwavering love for the QB of our Bucs, and want to support him at all costs, but the reality is… he’s just not a great NFL QB.

As for me not being a fan.. PUHLEASE. I was at that Super Bowl in San Diego in 2003 rocking my Bucs jersey, were you?

  47. Adrnagy Says:

If Jameis is such a problem for most of ppl then it’s simple … go watch and follow another team.
Regardless of what you think. Jameis will be a Buc at least the next 3 seasons while Bruce is stilll the head coach. And yes Jameis should get paid. !
Wentz, Stafford , rivers , Ryan , cousins just to name a few got paid with there up and down careers Jameis should too.

  48. LordCornelius Says:

KC defense was far better than the Bucs last year and it isn’t close. They are also not bad this year either.

They gave up 95 points in 2 games that massively inflated how bad that D looked. Every other game they were at least an average scoring defense. Bucs were historically bad.

  49. mark2001 Says:

Adrnagy…So I have to ask you….if Arians decides Jameis isn’t the QB for the future and we draft a new guy to take his place next year…with you still support the team?

Why are you sure Jameis will be the HC for the next three years? He is all about performance and accountability, and if he really thinks Jameis isn’t the answer he will move on. He isn’t married to him. And BTW..Arians may retire within three years…his/my age…his health? That isn’t a three year sure thing. I hope he becomes consistent, and the SF game was a once a year occurrence… And he is here for a decade. But it is up in the air.

  50. D1 Says:

Mahomes did it in 19 games. Winston 45 ?????

  51. mark2001 Says:

The old saying… Figures don’t lie, but liars figure.

  52. Pittsshore Says:

Dumb Arse Postman. Get a clue dummy. We got lucky to it’s last week’s win. We should have NO issues this week with the G-Men but it all depends on Apples McGoo and his day roller coaster ways.

  53. Adrnagy Says:

@mark2001. With or without Jameis buc for life. But Bruce said clear and loud he’s not here for a rebuilt. He’s defended Jameis so far on his play. And Jameis can correct his play. Bruce didn’t bring a large staff for nothing. He believes he will get buc in playoff. The. He will pass on the coaching to Todd or bryon.

  54. Buc1987 Says:

14 MORE games to GO for Jameis WINston.

  55. unbelievable Says:

Here’s some fun stats for you guys.

Since 2015, the following QBs all have MORE pick-6s than Jameis:

    Phillip Rivers
    Kirk Cousins
    Matthew Stafford
    Marcus Mariota
    Drew Brees
    Matt Ryan
    Derek Carr
    Cam Newton
    Ryan Tannehill
    Jay Cutler

Jameis is tied with Eli Manning and Dak Prescott at 4 for his entire career.

    #perspective

Does he throw too many interceptions? Absolutely. Has he been trending up over his last 10 games? Sure has. Let’s see how this season plays out before burning everything down, okay?

  56. Bucsfanman Says:

unbelievable- I saw you post that yesterday and I thought it was interesting. With Jameis, it just feels like he’s worse. It’s probably from a volume standpoint though!

  57. unbelievable Says:

Haha yeah bucsfanman I hear ya.

I reposted it today since it was very late last night. Just thought it was interesting. I actually thought he had thrown way more than that in his career tbh.

Game 1 he looked bad, no doubt. Similar to that Cincy game last year, though the INT off Howard’s hands was def not his fault. And BA says the RB was at fault on another one (though I think at that point Jameis just has to make a better decision).
Game 2 he looked more like where he left off at the end of last season.

I’m just hoping that continues. It seems so many on this site fall into 2 categories: Either everything he does is wrong and he’s garbage no matter how well he plays, or nothing is ever his fault… lol.

Reality is somewhere in the middle. But you absolutely can not discount how much playing with a bottom 3 defense and bottom 3 run game hurts you. Both those areas look to be improved finally, so I expect much better results this year, even with this gauntlet of road games coming up.

It is interesting to see that in games when the defense holds the other team to under 20 points (I think 20 was the amount), Jameis basically has the same W-L record as Brees, Goff, Wentz, etc., with similar TD-INT numbers as well…

  58. Bucsfanman Says:

He really is polarizing, isn’t he?! I just want the Bucs to win. We need his help to do so. It sure as heck ain’t Ryan Griffin!
    This is HIS year.
I wish I had the time to compare attempts and scores under 20 points. I’m guessing there’s a correlation: 35 or less attempts, opposition under 20 points=Buc win!

  59. Dapostman Says:

Bandit and Cliff Claven (Pittsshore) offer nothing but talking points and no substance. Your argument is Winston gets his stats in garbage time. I just showed you the last 8 1/2 games where he didn’t. You clowns keep referring to what he did in 2015 yet fail to see what he did at the end of 2018. Totally clueless to the new and improved Jameis Winston. That’s what happens when you have Winston Derangement Syndrome. We all know how angry and frustrated people with WDS get after an error free game. Seek help.

  60. Negative Nancy Says:

Most impressive is Marino, to get that many when it wasn’t such a passing league like now.

  61. AllhailJPP Says:

Draft a qb.. this class will be up to par with the 1983 class…..prove me wrong.. you cant and wont be able to

  62. BucsBandit Says:

@Dapostman you didn’t prove jacksquat. You posted his overall numbers per game from the end of last season. Which might I add, more than half of those games were against teams with losing records (with others resting players for the playoffs) AND after we were already eliminated from the playoffs, so those “performances” aren’t saying much.

  63. unbelievable Says:

I wish I had the time to compare attempts and scores under 20 points. I’m guessing there’s a correlation: 35 or less attempts, opposition under 20 points=Buc win!

Yup they’re definitely related, and it makes sense.

When your opponents are putting up 25+ points in a game, you have to throw a lot more to keep. And in almost all those games, our opponents were up way before us, so obviously we’re abandoning the run and throwing too much, becoming predictable, Jameis pressing, etc, etc.

I just want the Bucs to win.

    This is HIS year.

100% same. Let’s quit the constant rebuilding and finally fkn get somewhere.

    Guess we’ll see…

  64. Touchdown, Tampa Bay Says:

Eat a$$. He’s our quarterback. Love him or wait till he’s gone! Go Bucs!!!

  65. PriMech54 Says:

I feel like mark2001 easily has the most grounded and rational take in this entire thread when it comes to Jameis, maybe even the entire site. The rest of us should be taking notes.

  66. BucsBandit Says:

LOL @ Touchdown! So now we have to love any player that’s on the team, regardless of their play, because they’re on the team?

    ROFLMAO

  67. Tval Says:

This qb class will go down as the MOST OVERRATED ever. Prove me wrong. You WONT be able to. 😂😂🤣🤣👍🏼👍🏼 The Bucs make Eagle fans look reasonable. WOW!!!

  68. Anonymous Says:

Just goes to show the NFL’s bar and standards don’t discriminate against garbage yard, garbage people like Jay-Miss. Loser in life.

  69. Bucsace Says:

Preposterous to even mention Marino’s name in the same breadth as Winston

  70. Losinghope Says:

Joes make themselves look more stupid by the day. To put jaymiss in the same sentence W mahomes is absolutely positively foolish! I don’t give a damn HOW MANY 300 yardgames jaymiss has he’s no where NEAR the caliber of qb as mahomes. Dude is ELITE, jaymiss is average at best

  71. Pittsshore Says:

Don’t lose all hope JW lovers, as he just broke Sapps record for most dollars spent at The Doll House. Which I find odd since his new place has been the Penthouse for over a year now. Much easier place to hide his car, back by the hotel.

  72. July Joe Says:

    Mahomes is the real deal.

Jameis is the real deal … even if idiotic “fans” can’t see it.

Last season, Jameis had a better passer rating “under pressure” than Mahomes, while Mahomes just edged him out for the league leader position in 3rd down conversion %.

Both are awesome young QBs … one has had Andy Reid and a dynamic rushing attack to go with a great receiving corps … the other had Koetter (who now has Matt Ryan on pace to throw FORTY INTERCEPTIONS this year) and no run game to go with his great receiver corps.

    It’s all about the “TEAM”.

  73. July Joe Says:

Just as Jameis was BETTER THAN MAHOMES in college and people would have laughed at anyone who said Mahomes was as good as Jameis, due to the TEAM Jameis had around him compared to the TEAM Mahomes had around him, Mahomes was BETTER THAN JAMEIS last year due to the TEAM around him (better coaches and a much better run game).

BOTH Mahomes and Jameis have undeniable Hall of Fame “talent” and by all accounts both are hard workers and desire to be great … neither are mere “system QBs” like Jared Goff, or mere “game managers” like Mariota, Bridgewater, Trubisky, etc … but it’s all about “TEAM” in the NFL.

  74. July Joe Says:

What is HILARIOUS is that after Jameis Winston turned undrafted Adam Humphries into a stud and got him PAID … he’s now with dink n’ dunk Mariota and has 3 catches … for 4 yards … yes, FOUR yards … a whopping 1.3 yards per catch!

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
