Blitzing Bowles
September 17th, 2019It sure seems like Bucs defensive coordinator Todd Bowles likes to blitz.
And in particular, Bowles likes to bring the heat on Stinking Panthers quarterback pouty Cam Newton.
Consider this little tidbit from NFL’s NextGen stats.
The Buccaneers defense has blitzed Cam Newton on 66% of dropbacks tonight, the 2nd-highest blitz rate against Newton in a game since Week 12, 2017…
…when the Todd Bowles-led Jets blitzed Newton on 68% of dropbacks.#TBvsCAR | #GoBucs

And when the Bucs face the Stinking Panthers in London in three weeks, why should anyone expect that to change much?
But back to the present. We all know Bowles like to blitz. And this week, the Bucs will face rookie Giants QB Daniel Jones.
If Joe were Bowles, Joe would blitz Jones as much if not more than Newton. Rattle the rookie on the road.

This is a major reason why we did what we did in the draft. We needed speed and depth in the secondary to execute this defense. So far its working.
We can start salivating over rookie Qbacks again. Just like when Monte was here.
Go Bucs!
In BA I Trust!

I though Daniel Jones was starting

He is rhenry, but Joe probably writes his articles ahead of time and wrote this one before the Daniel Jones news.

True that betterbucfan.

Blitzbay with an elite CB who wants out of jville would be even better.

Love the new attacking defense! Tora Tora Tora

I think the amount of blitzing is predicated on what QB we are playing. You can blitz Newton because he can be fooled in his pre-snap reads easier than say Tom Brady. The QB’s who are really good on defensive reads can counter the blitz on quick strikes to the open receiver. Now that Brees is out the rest of the QB’s we play in the next 3-4 games aren’t exactly seasoned veterans so I see Bowles continuing his maximized pressure blitzing. We get either Jones or Manning, then Goff, then Bridgewater?, back to Cam, and Mariota after the break. Yeah I don’t see any tailing off of blitz calls. At least not against this lineup.

This defense is for real. Oh how long it’s been. Bowles will rattle the kid Sunday
September 17th, 2019 at 11:29 am
Daniel Jones will be running for his life. “Danny, your not in the ACC anymore”.
September 17th, 2019 at 11:30 am
We can totally hit 75%
Let’s do this!

Poor kid is gonna get baptized by fire via Todd Bowles, welcome to the NFL rook

I really like the new D. The unpredictability (where from and when) of the blitzes is a magnificent change. Keep it up. Great work.
September 17th, 2019 at 12:08 pm
Blitzcraiging is fine. Good teams though will make you pay dearly with to many blitzes as our Bucs will find out. At some point, you gotta have a couple of Jpp’s on your D line. Anybody watch them Browns last night? That’s what a pass rush is suppose to look like fellow Buc fans. Putting an opposing QB flat on his a** and out of the game. We need that kind of rush like..we had back in the day. It makes the biggest difference in all of the world.

we have all the pieces on the roster….no trades…
develop who we have….
GO BUCS!!!!!

If you’re blitzing that much joe come you only got 7 qb hits in 2 games?
September 17th, 2019 at 1:11 pm
813 I know you wanna see VH3 moved from his spot, but you gotta be kidding yourself if you don’t think BA,Todd and Jason aren’t kicking the tires on this Jalen wants out thing.

DB55 … Excellent question. We’re on-track (ya, after ONLY 2 games) to get 56 QB hits this season. Last year we had 93 QB hits with a #31 ranked defense. So what’s changed between last year & this year, besides a new DC, different personnel & moving to a 3-4 hybrid defense obviously. Oh wait, that’s enough change right there.
IMO, there’s sacks & QB hits, which are BOTH very nice, but there’s also QB pressures. Those don’t get reflected in any stats that I’ve been able to find, but they’re VERY significant far as I’m concerned. Rattle the QB, keep him guessing, don’t let him get ‘comfortable’ … that’s what Todd Bowles has been doing these first 2 games. And this defense has been doing it VERY successfully from what I’m seeing. Todd seems to use blitzing as a BIG part of that, but I’m now convinced that JOB #1 is STOP THE RUN and make your opponent ONE DIMENSIONAL. Teams have done that against Jameis and the Bucs for years. Now WE get to do it against them. Payback is such a bitch, isn’t it.

The beauty of the 3-4 is the ability to change up the source of the pressure. Once JPP returns look out for amazing pressure on pass as well as run plays. This defence will be suffocating!

—————–
Would you say that this would cause even a good if not great qb to turn the ball over? Constant erratic nauseating pressure on every third drop back. So much so where said QB has injured his shoulder, ankle and pride? Is that a factor?
September 17th, 2019 at 2:21 pm
DB – Go take a look at the passing stats for the 49ers. Kittles was the leading receiver in catches and yards and it wasn’t even close for the remaining teammates. Plenty of rollouts (running away from a pass rush) and dump off to the TE.
And don’t you remember dogging VH3 for giving up so many slants? Those are no-step throws out of shotgun that are designed for the QB to get rid of the ball quickly and negate the pass rush.
We all know that actually getting to the QB causes the most damage, but if we are also forcing every ball to be thrown quickly, most times that ball isn’t being thrown that far downfield (and can also cause a rushed throw ala DR’s reference to QB pressures).
What do you need to see from the defense to change your mind that the Bucs are playing well on that side of the ball?

“This is a major reason why we did what we did in the draft. We needed speed and depth in the secondary to execute this defense. So far its working. ”
@sport Are you saying that the Bucs benchwarmers and practice squad needed an infusion of speed?
Are you saying that our kicker runs fast?
The only players that are making any difference this year were not drafted this year except Gay.
How about the 50 yard penalty on Dizzy Dean when he used his blinding speed to block that guy from behind on Bobo’s great punt return. That was a game changer.

Dan
Very happy with the dline. I like minter over white. Need a better cb than vh3 and I’ll take Edwards over D. Stewart. Once Davis gets his head right we’ll be straight. We are on our way.
As for the blitzing. It’s a dangerous game and if you’re not getting to the QBs what’s the point.

nosbos
VHG is an outside CB….he’ll stay there….dont let incompetent smitty cloud your judgement about his position….
i doubt they’re kicking the tires on JR…..
1…he cost too much….
2…imo, he’s a DB version of djax…..
GO BUCS!!!!!

DB55
need a better CB?…..LOL….
i didnt know having a pick 6, making the game winning tackle and not giving up a TD was such lousy play but WTFDIK…..LOL….
the reason why our defense has success without getting to the QB on blitz is because the DB’s have tight coverage….QB’s have small windows to throw….thats the point…..if you cant get to the QB you better have tight coverage….VHG and the secondary have provided that….
GO BUCS!!!!!!

I always thought you knew …. but I get it now. You’re a gayduh. That’s ok buddy. Ize still fuuks wit you
Don’t change the fact that vh3 a bum and is going to get exposed (again) this time by a rookie QBs and a no name wr.

DB55
Lol….
Nawl you showing you nole glasses….it’s got nothing to do with being a gator….
It has everything to do with being productive in a new system…. and that’s what happened so far….
Can’t judge the secondary on what they did in smittys scheme….what have they done now….
GO BUCS

VH3 is good enough, he is known for jumping routes, that why you can put a double move on him. He just has to pick his spots, don’t do it early in games, let the defense get into a flow then jump one.
