What coach has made an impact?

The upgrade is beginning to show.

All offseason, ever since former Bucs coach Dirk Koetter was dismissed, the organization has all but said on a blowtorch radio station that the problems with the team and the reason it was losing was coaching.

Aside from losing a couple of players to free agency and one trade, the Bucs offense was kept virtually intact from the last two years.

Wide receivers, offensive line, quarterback, you name it.

For a team that had lost 22 games the past two years, the lack of player movement was odd. To Joe, that meant the powers that be at One Buc Palace were convinced the problem was just coaching.

Defensively, the Bucs dumped several core starters but they also hung on to others and had no problem raising the stock of players the past regime couldn’t figure out how to use.

Enter Bucco Bruce Arians and his cast of friends army of assistants to take over the club.

It’s beginning to pay off for the Bucs, writes Nate Davis of USA Today. Looking at every NFL team, Davis believes defensive coordiantor Todd Bowles is making a major influence.

DC Todd Bowles is having the biggest impact thus far among coaches on Tampa Bay’s new staff — Thursday’s impressive goal-line stand against Christian McCaffrey almost surely was one the Bucs couldn’t have pulled off last year.

Nope. Joe couldn’t imagine last year’s club or two years ago that team pulling off a win like they did last Thursday.

Shoot, when the Stinking Panthers had a fourth-and-one deep in Bucs territory, it was the same end zone and the same area where offsides-jumping, Lightning-trolling, belly-shirt-wearing, practice-hating, kicker-heckling, tree-grinding , non-contact-football-loving, chicken-wings-grilling, playing-time-squawking, TV-cooking-star, half-sack Swaggy Baker pulled his famous stunt in December of 2017.

So yeah, Joe fully expected the Bucs to choke right then and there. Then again, Joe has been conditioned to think that way by years and years and years of losing. Almost always, the Bucs found ways to lose.

Could that tough-fought, tight Thursday night win be the turning moment for the franchise?

    It’s still too early Joe…

Have another drink and wait for the Gints game…

Lowly that they’re supposed to be….the Bucs are STILL lowly too…

Get back to me after this game or the next about turning points and such!

    Go Bucs!!! Beat the Gints!

  2. #1bucsfan Says:

I like the direction the defense is heading but I think it will take me all season till I’m convinced this isn’t a dream lol

  3. Buc Raybolt Says:

Have some faith, Buc1987. BA and his coaches are the real deal, but it’s going to take time. Patience is tough to come by in this win-now league. Check out BA’s record in Arizona his first season. It was wildy up and down during the first half before they strung together wins in the latter half. That’s how this Bucs season will probably go. Hopefully, they win enough in the first half to make a playoff run in the second.

  4. BucsBandit Says:

    WHAT?

How is the “upgrade beginning to show?”

Our Defense is improved for sure so far, but our Offense is clearly WORSE. Far few yards of production and fewer points scored.

This article would have been better titled, “The Upgrade At Defense Is Beginning To Show.”

Bruce Arians hasn’t shown much yet. He was brought in here as a “QB Whisperer” and “Offensive Genius.” His Offense (so far) is no where near as powerful as Koetter’s was and Winston hasn’t improved.

Todd Bowles and his Defensive Staff deserve all the praise so far. Sure, one could say Arians is the one that got Bowles to come here, okay I’ll give Arians credit for that.

But again, the Offense is underwhelming so far.

  5. BucsBandit Says:

    CONTINUED…

    For those curious…

After 2 weeks, our Offense is ranked 21st in scoring and an ugly 27th in yardage.

Arians isn’t exactly impressing people so far as the “QB Whisperer” and offensive mastermind.

  6. BucEmUp Says:

Can you please stop focusing on the positives of a losing team? Yes the defense has improved, but now the offense sucks under a new oc. Lets talk about the bad so the team can get better.

    WEAK LINK LEFTWICH!!!!!!!!

    WE PAID FOR ARIANS!!!!!!!!!

  7. BucEmUp Says:

Bandit thats because he isnt putting together weekly game plans or calling plays. He is compleltey hands off with the offense.

Weak link leftwich is running everything on offense. I am.betting on this team lising Sunday with a very respectable defensive showing and a press conference full of excuses as to how the offense didnt excecute good enough. The entire offensive roster looks like they dont believe in what they are being coached.

After this loss I hope Arians takes over….unless he is going to start at least helping Byron behind the scene this offense is going to blow.

    ARIANS FOR PLAYCALLER!!!!

  8. Bird Says:

This is the week to check how our offense looks
    The giants are garbage
Look at the last two games against them – cowboys and bills put up huge numbers. If offense Struggles then we have a problem

    Defense is for real
And no excuses on “well defense learns faster then offense “
This defense was mike smith inherited and went from 4-3 to 3-4 . Not even close to offense who has same principles as last year coaches schemes

  9. DooshLaRue Says:

Come on now……please quit dogging out Gary Coleman….err….. Leftwich.

Do you forget how important he is to the Soiled Messiah?
Remember back not long ago when Jameis said he can relate better with Byron because he too was a black QB?

It doesn’t matter if Todd Monken, who I believe is white (I don’t see color) had the offense humming, Jameis is more comfortable with a coach that shares his skin color and position and I guess that’s really what’s important right?

    Jamies’s words, not mine.

  10. El Buco Realisto Says:

What coach has made the biggest impact??????? That is easy!!!!!! That would be ole stale biscuit in the press conference!!!!!!!!!! No coach has talked more trash and not delivered in Bucs history!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. Clw JB Says:

First year, two games in – the O needs 4 more weeks to gel – thankfully the D has rebounded quickly and will keep us in games until the O starts really clicking

5 of our last 8 games are at home – if we can just stay at .500 through the first half of the season, their plan seems to make sense and 9-7 seems doable – with the injuries to Cam and Brees, if we can sweep the Dirty Birds, 9-7 might take the division…

  12. Anonymous Says:

Hit em with another repost, Realist. Or better yet, go back to your mom’s basement, you narcissistic bum!

  13. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

    Realist

We’re two games in and 1-1, how can you say he hasn’t delivered? 😂

  14. AwShbucs Says:

While our passing offense has taken a considerable dip from the past 2 seasons, I’m a big fan of what Leftwhich, Harold Goodwin and Todd McNair have done to improve the run game.

For the first time in a long time the Oline, particularly the guys on the interior, are firing off the line and opening up holes for the backs to hit, and the backs have taken advantage those holes as well.

Now, as far as the passing game goes, Bruce Arians himself has said that he doesn’t judge QBs in this system until week 8. As Jameis becomes more ingratiated within this new offense, we will see an uptick in production.

Godwin has been a beast, now we need Mike Evan’s and OJ Howard to join the party. Perriman could be a beast if he would play like he was in training camp but he needs get out of his head to catch the damn ball.

Luckily for us, hungry as the Gmen may be starting out 0-2, their defense is abysmally bad. So this is the week for Jameis and his weapons to build some momentum and confidence moving forward.

    Go Bucs.

  15. JimmyJack Says:

BucEmUp…….You said Bruce Arians is completely hands off with the offense…..What are you basing this off of? Cause it sounds like complete bull.

Even if you say he’s completely hands off with playcalling it is probably bull because he specifically said that he would be wearing a headset(will look to see if he does on Sunday) so he can be dialed into the playcalls.

Who knows what they are doing in the film room but I would wager a large sum of money that Bruce is heavily involved in game planning. Not sure the point of spending Bullspit but it’s a very poor representation of our fanbase. Thanks.

  16. Destinjohnny Says:

The first five games are basically the pre season now.

If I was a coach of play my players during the pre season and start 4-0

  17. Bob in Valrico Says:

There” upgrades to defensive staff .O line coaching and special teams.
As for the team, we still are still prone to penalties, mistakes and execution errors. On offense ‘these errors prevent TD’s. So in some ways coaching has improved and in others there is still a resemblance to last years team. We are near the top of the chart on penalties at this point of the season. The real question is can we blame past or present coaching for everything. Its time for all the players to have the personal discipline to start correcting some of the mistakes that contribute to losses.

  18. DB55 Says:

I think you guys underestimate the impact that cutting Gerald McCoy had on the defense. Please realize that team can no longer simply run at his gap for a score.

  19. DB55 Says:

If you look back at any other time the call would have been a run to McCoy’s gap which they tried throughout the game and got stuffed at one point they got stuffed in impressive fashion by Suh. So instead the ran outside and didn’t make it.

  20. DooshLaRue Says:

One of the few things we agree on DB55.
    Ding ding Softie’s gone!

  21. DB55 Says:

I don’t credit Bowles I credit our dline bc it has no ice cream anymore.

  22. DB55 Says:

Okay serious question, how do we beat the Giants if we have no offense? Our receivers can’t catch and out running game barely works. Are we to throw the ball 20x to Brate? And why isn’t the young TE starting over Auclair? What exactly is Auclair doing out there? He doesn’t get covered bc he’s no threat and his blocking is avg at best. Anyone?

  23. tnew Says:

We have a head coach now who is a head coach. He is involved in ALL phases of the game.

After a previous regime that “didn’t touch the defense” even tho it was on a historically bad path one year removed from being one of the bottom three in the league.

A head coach’s job is to position the team to win games. Not to lead the league in passing yards. If the Bucs finish bottom third in passing yards and go to the playoffs, I’m happy. If the head coach believes his defense is fixed and he has a solid running game, why try to lead the league in passing? Koetter likes to show how smart he is with his stats. Makes him an Ok OC and a lousy HC

So MANY of you on hear are like:

    stats are for losers
    stats are for losers
    stats are for losers

    Now its:
we suck in the league offensive stats..

Plenty of reason to be patient at this point. I am optimistically withholding judgment until week 9.

  24. DB55 Says:

Lol I didn’t even read the comments before posting but they have a point. The offense is not very good.

They just have to throw to Godwin and brate 🤷🏽‍♂️

  25. DB55 Says:

It might be a 6-3 game with Matt gay missing a 24 yard fg to tie the game but wtfdik

  26. AwShbucs Says:

Db55 the giants defense is trash.

Jameis is gonna go off for at least 300 yards and 2 scores. I think this will be the week ME13 returns to form and the running game will provide 100 yards and a touchdown like it has the last 2 games. Throw in 2 Matt Gay FGs and we beat the Gmen 27-13.

    Go Bucs.

  27. Defense Rules Says:

Agree with BucsBandit … These first 2 games have been ALL about the Bucs’ DEFENSE. They’ve officially been tagged with allowing 45 points, but we all know that our offense gave away 16 of those (2 Pick-6s and a safety) and more realistically 19 points (if you include Game 1’s FG because of the fumble). We’re ranked #19 in POINTS ALLOWED now, but take away just the 16 and we’d be ranked #5 (Buffalo has allowed 30 in 2 games). Interestingly, we’re ranked #6 in YARDAGE ALLOWED.

Bucs’ offense is credited with being #21 in POINTS SCORED with 37 points in 2 games, but take away VHIII’s Pick-6 and our offense has REALLY scored 30 points in 2 games. That’d be good enough for a #27 ranking … right BELOW the Giants who’ve scored 31 points in 2 games. WHOOPEE!

Clearly, it’s ALL about the Bucs’ DEFENSE thus far. But IF that continues, we’ll probably be on our way to yet another 5-11 season. Bucs’ OFFENSE needs to get its’ act together. And quickly.

  28. DB55 Says:

    Aw

    Per DR

That’d be good enough for a #27 ranking … right BELOW the Giants who’ve scored 31 points in 2 games.

I’m just saying bro we can wish in one hand and crap in the other but….somebody has to catch the ball and score with it. Easier said than done and yes I know the Giants def is garbage but still unless they give us points we have to score our own.

  29. Todd Says:

    BuckEmEp—

Please take your pills. You have ZERO comprehension how much you’re embarrassing yourself.

I always tell myself before reading the JBF comments, “Inhale GOOD SH!T, exhale BULLSH!T!”

Your comments always take care of my exhale…the plants of this world thank you!

    Now, carry on!

  30. Defense Rules Says:

tnew … You’re right that we suck in offensive stats, but if we don’t get our act together until Week 9 there’s a good chance we’ll be well out of it by then. And in the 2nd half of the season we’ll be facing some strong defenses & some strong offenses. Ours is a tough schedule, and we’re not going to win many games with our offense scoring an average of 15 PPG. Offense was SUPPOSED to be our strength doing into this season. They’re paid BIG bucks to produce & put points on the board, and LOTS OF THEM. NO EXCUSES … DO YOUR JOB.

  31. webster Says:

I love the butt hurt hill billy like doosh who is mad jameis said he relates to leftwich because he is black. He convienently left out that jameis also said he could relate because leftwich played the position, was a first round pick, played under a lot of scrutiny, played in this offense and also he was black. Jameis said all of that and all doosh the hill billy heard was black. That says more about you than jameis. News flash, most white people love pumpkin pie for desert at thanksgiving while blacks love sweet potatoe pie. Not that one is better just a fact. I would much rather go to the house with sweet potatoe pie. That does not mean i would not get full if i go to the house with pumpkin pie. It just mean i identify more with sweet potatoe pie. Also, all players say they can relate to coaches more who have played the game at the nfl level. Jameis up until this year has not had a qb coach, OC who was a 1st round pick or has played in the nfl or has played the position. What do you not understand hill billy? You sir are an idiot!!!

  32. Buc1987 Says:

Last I checked the Panthers and 9ers have pretty good D’s.

    Not worried about the offense.

  33. Buc1987 Says:

    And another thing…

Who cares how many points the offense scores as long as they win the freaking game?

  34. Son of Kobe Faker Says:

“Why is my Dad and I, Bucemup, Buc bandit…others

that see that Byron Leftfoot is holding this team down in a possible playoff potential season

we want what is best for our team and the players to win

what is frustrating is the exact experienced playcaller that should be is only 2 steps away

we dreamed of having a above average defense and so far it is very promising, however we have been befuddled because our offense has become the 2018 Arizona Cardinal offense led by the overgrown Gary Coleman”

    Son of Kobe Faker

  35. Todd Says:

    Son-of-a-Kobe—

You and every mother dumb a$$ in here thinking Arians isn’t impacting the play calls are idiots-extroidinare.

  36. '79 Defense Says:

“Could that tough-fought, tight Thursday night win be the turning moment for the franchise?”

You would like to think that coaching will make the difference, but why fool ourselves again? Especially after just two games and a 1-1 start. If they get to 7-3 then I might be inclined to think that something is finally happening.

  37. BucsBandit Says:

    GREAT, SO WE ALL AGREE…

Our Offense sucks because of Jameis Winston.

Glad we’re all on the same page, finally.

Now let’s cut him loose and draft the future of the Buccaneers next year.

  38. JimmyJack Says:

Kobe…….Are you new to the NFL? You are being way to trigger happy on this one buddy.

-First you are not accounting for the competition. We played two fierce Defensive fronts weeks one and two. It’s very likely we were gameplanning around what those defenses do well. This is what good coaches do……You want this offense to set back and heave the ball down the field of on a team like the Panthers and you play right into their hands. This is how you get perfermances like our 2017 game vs them where they nearly sent Winston home in a body bag and had our OL so scared all’s they could do was jump offsides on key passing downs.

-Secondly we are in a new offense and it gets better and better with time. This has been a true statement for as long as the NFL has been around.

-Thirdly a big factor last week could definitely have been that we had a QB coming off a very awful performance. They may not have trusted Winston and called a more conservative gamd plan……especially facing off against a much better secondary then what San Fran had.

-Fourthly if your goal for this team is to ever compete for championships you better hope for this team to be able to win the game in other ways(like we did last Sunday) then just passing. No team has ever won a championship in this league that could only win one style of game……This hass been a true statement for as long as the NFL has been around.

I do understand you concern and it is valid. But you are trying to close the book on it after 2 chapters……..Meanwhile chapter 3 is shaping up to be a pivatol one for this offense. We have a real chance here to showcase how good this passing game can be against a awful defense……..This is our week to open up the playbook and do some serious damage.

A well coached team would look at this matchup and run a much different style offense then what we saw in weeks 1&2. This should be the expectation……….Now if we see more of the same in this game stay conservative I’ll give you more credit. Until then you sound like an impatient sheep to the insta gratification society we live in.

  39. JimmyJack Says:

Oh and don’t let me hear to go quiet for a week if we light it up tomorrow then go back to ranting when we play more methodical against a good Rams front. Then go quiet again when we face a Saints D that sucks.

Don’t start going all PMS on us bro.

  40. Pigsueybucsfan Says:

Jimmy Jack good post. Good reasoning, glad to see at least some on this site have patience and common sense. GO BUCS

  41. PUGS&BUCS Says:

Regardless of the final outcome, I’ll give the Bucs coaches credit for one thing: they are sticking with their plan and they are seeing it through. They are not half-azzing it by SAYING it was coaching and then bringing in free agents…. they’re keeping the roster in tact and re-coaching the scheme to the players. This is called integrity, and it is valuable It’s a sign they aren’t BS’ing the public or the employees. It’s apparent they TRULY believe this because their actions are matching their words.

  42. JimbobBucsFan Says:

Bruce Arians has emphasized in many comments he has made since day one that he sees teaching as a big part of what coaches do.  The assemblage of his staff and the elimination of the music during practices are but two indication of his philosophy in action.  He wants the attention of the guys focused at all times during workouts.

Arians has also said that the job of a head coach is to include teaching and looking to the ongoing professional growth of each of his staff members as well.
You can bet he maybe hands off only in the sense of avoiding constant micromanaging of all details to the detriment of his people.  I’m confident that he looks to overseeing offensive and defensive game plans and provides guidance where he feels he can. He delegates and trusts those he has given responsibility.  He shows the bit of wisdom appropriate for his age I think.

Time will tell.  If successful the team will begin “stacking those wins”.

  43. BucEmUp Says:

JIMMY JACK, ARIANS SAID FROM HIS OWN MOUTH….HIS OWN WORDS THAT DURING THE WEEK HE ISNT EVEN IN THE OFFENSE MEETING ROOMS TO HELP WITH GAME PLANNING FOR OPPONENTS. To ADD TO THAT, LEFTWICH SAID THE OTHER DAY THAT HE DOESNT CARE WHAT COVERAGES THE DEFENSES ARE SHOWING AND THAT EXECUTION OF WHATEVER PLAYS HE IS CALLING WILL BE THE DIFFERENCE BETEWEEN SUCCESS AND FAILURE.

    THERE IS YOUR B.S BUDDY!!!!!!

WE PAID FOR ARIANS, WE WANT ARAINS NOT WEAK LINK LEFTWICH!!!!!!

  44. BucEmUp Says:

Todd, keep using your plants pal, they wont change the outcome. If you guys ACTUALLY followed the head coach and his weekly shows he does.you would see what I said is right from his mouth. HIS WORDS!!!! BYRON is assembling this offense 100% by himself. I suggest you go listen to Byrons latest presser before you continure spewing your crap in defense of this offense. This is NOT Arians offense. It may be his playbook, butnit is NOT his gameplanning or play calling.

Check.your facts and get back to me when a rookie qb beats us, a team that used to have a top flight offense and now currently is averaging 12 points allowed on defense because our play calling sucks balls.

    WEAK LINK LEFTWICH!!
