Talks about America last night.
Joe has maintained there are many reasons why America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, has 15 more games to get his act straight and prove he is the franchise quarterback of the Bucs.
Last night on national radio, Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians added a couple of more hints that despite what the loud crowd and haters want, Jameis isn’t getting the hook any time soon.
While appearing on “Late Hits,” co-hosted by Alex Marvez and Bill Polian, heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Arians suggested Jameis needs to time get comfortable with the offense crafted by Byron Leftwich Arians.
First up, Marvez asked Arians how long before Jameis gets the new offense down.
Alex Marvez: How long does it generally take to master your system?
Bruce Arians: Master it? It takes a couple of years. For us and the staff [currently], keep it as simple as possible. … We try to build gameplans off of the generic-based stuff. There’s plenty of it.
Bill Polian: Where was your quarterback when you got there. How far along was he?
Arians: He knew that offense of Dirk’s [Koetter] inside and out. Mechanically, Clyde [Christensen] has done a great job with him on eliminating high hot throws. Just make him a fundamentally better player. … Mentally, it does take some time.
“Some time?” Joe doesn’t think that sounds like a month, maybe not even two months.
So unless Jameis completely and totally melts down and has several four-or-more pick games in succession, Joe will stick with his belief that Jameis has the entire season to demonstrate he’s worth another contract or — more likely — the franchise tag for 2020.

Agree totally with your take Joe. However the wild card here is the fan reaction to JW’s play.
He burnt up most of his good will this past Sunday. He needs to bounce back quickly. If he should slump or totally lose his confidence, fan pressure may force the Glazers to lean on Licht and BA.
Having said that…BA is financially set for life…if he believes he is right and JW should continue to play JW will play…BA will ignore the Glazers and they’re not going to fire him during the season.

lmaooooo sure it does now lets excuse him learning a new offense. this is rhe first new offense hes learned in 4 years. i hope it come on before this season is a complete waste. which it looks like it already is . while we continue to suck and make excuses for jameis the 5 year pro. hes been lapped by almost every young qb taken after his class.

Yeah it takes time but the body of production he keeps putting on the field speaks volumes. I want him to change but honestly i don’t think he has the mental make-up anymore to be a QB. We saw it last year with Fitz and now after this game and the media hounding him and this a make or break year for his career, i dont think he has shown he can shake the pressure. Jameis multiple times in his career has been given an opportunity to take us down the field to win a game and it usually ends up like it did Sunday. i think his confidence is fully shaken and this is arians trying to build it back up but out there i do not see a confident quarterback and the mental aspect of it scares me this thursday night on national tv where again he never seems to play well.
years and years of his off-field activities and turnovers with the world against him is wearing on him i think. I hope he proves me and everyone wrong tomorrow.

Sorry Coach, but that sounds like coach-speak to me. What happened to the ‘We’re re-loading, not rebuilding’ stuff? Or the ‘Win now’ notion? Jameis isn’t a rookie; he’s got 4 years of starting under his belt under a fairly decent OC. He’s also got a 3.1% career interception rate, highest in the NFL. Sunday’s game didn’t exactly lessen that number.
Forget the ‘two-years-to-master’it’ bull. Forget this ‘dummying down the gameplans’ horsepuckey. Bucs have the highest paid offense in the league, and Jameis is the highest paid member of that offense. That offense put up TEN points against what’ll probably turn out to be an average SF defense by year’s end (we’ll see much better before the season’s over), AND gave away FOURTEEN points (S/Ts helped put the nail in the coffin when that blocked punt gave SF a short field for a FG). Sorry, already have too many excuses. Don’t need any more.

Jameis fundamentals should be in place Not throwing the ball to a busted coverage on the screen play to kill the game. This upcoming game is a must win for Jameis.
If during the game we play sloppy but we have a chance to win the game QB play should step up. Manage that last drive.
I get it is a new system and yes it takes months or real football games. But decision making should be in place. Let’s not combine both.
Jameis has to play out the year so no extension of tag is place. Done. If he performs to pro bowl caliber yes a tag should be place.

Probably accurate. My first thought was at least not until there was mathematically nothing to win anymore. It is clear that Arians thinks we can’t win with the back up we have… and Jameis will get every opportunity to prove he has the mettle of a quality starting QB. And I did believe that if he is ever benched, it will be the last game we will likely ever see him play in Tampa again.
And if he knew “koetter’s offense inside and out”, seems strange that he couldn’t show it on the field. But as I’ve said before, knowing an offense inside and out is one thing…being able to run it effectively on the field is another animal. After all, Arians knows his offense inside and out…but couldn’t run it on the field.

An interesting comment. I realize it is difficult to say things without throwing someone under the bus, so one must read between the lines. In KC a player walks into a difficult system and looks like he wrote it. I am not buying the 3 year comment. I read that as JW has not the smarts to progress.

I disagree on the 15 games.
If think it is more likely in the 8 to 12 games range.
IF……….. he continues to play like Sunday, or doesn’t CLEARLY show that he is getting it, and CONSISTENTLY greatly improved, then they will likely CUT him.
In other words, if he is NOT going to be the future of the franchise going forward, WHY pay him a million dollars plus a game going forward?
Is his salary this year guaranteed?

They should probably go back over this training program because the pass to Howard was a High Hot throw, that hit his hands hard enough to bounce out of them. With a softer easier catchable ball would have been an example from lesson learned from coach Christenson. All game is passes were mostly fastballs.
Christopher Schiefen, if the “Franchise” had not thrown them two passes we had a better chance to win. One to a RB not known for his receiving ability, against one of the best CB’s ever. The other pass was just bad decision making. Hit our player in the leg or feet if it is not there, to you know live another play. Not give up the pick six because he got nervous, maybe if he had some actual competition this offseason his nerves would have been of steel not fluff and stuff.

This is what its like being a Bucs fan. Being told that the QB everyone knows will never be a good QB now needs 2 more yrs to continue to suck in order to justify the guaranteed contracts given to Licht and BA. It boggles the mind that the incompetency and arrogance runs so rampant throughout this sorry franchise. It’s not that complicated, start scouting QBs in the upcoming draft. If the Bucs are going to continue to suck, at least give us fans the illusion of hope by selecting another QB. We all know what we have with JW and no one wants to endure more games like last Sunday.

Best not to play the “if” game here because others will respond if Kwon didn’t have hands of stone and the other Niner didn’t choke his opportunity there would have been two more ints to blame on JW.
Lots of IFs in the contest because it was a truly horrible game by BOTH teams. There was no winner…only a loser! The Bucs have seemingly perfected losing.
One Niner said they wanted the game more…BS…they were lucky to play a team that loves to provide gift games to teams they should beat.
This game was soooo bad by both teams…by the officials…the coaches…the perfect storm…that’s why I’m still waiting under the old “it’s only one game” rubric.

Realist… the D does seem to be ” reloading”. The O can only reload as fast as Jameis and the O line can handle. The O line is slowly reloading, though I think one or two guys need to be “unloaded” for the reloading to be completed. I don’t know about Jameis and his ability to “reload” and perform the new system..
Regarding what Arians said…he couldn’t look inside of Jameis’s head. Or his heart. And from those things spring the ability to learn, read, react, and adjust to the new system. How can you hold Arians thoughts as gospel regarding “reloading” when there was no way of knowing what abilities are inside the man, Jameis.

One thing ,we can’t blame this on Koetter and actually Koetter offense did
move the ball ,just not good enough in the red zone. The pass to Brate at the back of the endzone that was called back was a positive for Jameis.
IMO, Jameis has to prove he can lead the team against good defenses. Ten games should give a good indication which way Jameis’s career will go. Two games against both the Panthers and Saints, Sprinkle in the Rams and Seahawks and Jameis and this offense will be tested . Jameis also has something to prove
in the five road contests.

Just realized something. With GMC gone, Jameis has now taken his place as the ‘face of a losing franchise’. Jameis kept getting a Bye while our defense sucked & our running game stunk (especially from you Joe), but when the defense & run game showed up yesterday, all attention turned to Jameis. And what folks saw wasn’t pretty.
Tomorrow night’s game though against the Panthers is Jameis’ chance for redemption. Actually it’s the whole offense’s chance for redemption, because Jameis had lots of help in looking bad. Get back on-track Bucs … let’s see what ya got.

Altered Ego … “The Glazer boys are playing…rock…paper..scissors”. Somehow I don’t think so. Gut feel is that they’ve already seen enough, and won’t be handing out any $30 million checks come January. Jameis is just too inconsistent and has turned into a lightning rod (aka … liability) for this franchise. Business people don’t tolerate that for very long.
Glazers have the coaching team in-place that they’ve wanted (and needed) for a long time. 2020 is the ‘Year of the QB’ from all accounts. Bucs will sell the farm (if necessary) to draft a QB high. In the meantime though, if Jameis doesn’t get his act together any better than Sunday, he’ll be lucky to make it through half this season.

D rules… very reasonable from a business perspective. As I’ve said elsewhere…backup money, maybe…but 30 mil for what we have seen? No way. And your “face of the franchise” take is spot on. And heaven forbid, who is to say that there might not be some other “personal indiscretion” or “compromising situation” in the future that would make him unavailable as a result of league actions? And don’t say I’m reaching…did we ever think we would have dealt with the “uber driver” story and league discipline? But that aside, frankly, if he doesn’t look like the second coming of Brady, Rodgers, Brees, or something of that sort from a effectiveness perspective, I would find it surprising to see him receive that huge paycheck.

We should extend Jameis now for 5 years at 20 million a year.
Then, we will have enough money to build a truly great team.
We have sucked for a decade.
It will take 3 more years to build a winner.

He is trash, good QB stock coming out of college. 0-2 after tommorrow night. We might win week 3 against the Giants. After that, this 6 or 7 game road trip, it’s over for JW. Thank goodness.

Arians was absolutely NOT implying he would give Jameis two years to master his Offense. He was just stating how long it takes.
TRUST ME… Arians isn’t going to have any patience with Winston if he keeps play so bad. He’ll be BENCHED sooner rather than later.
I think there’s a very good chance Jameis doesn’t make it out of the Week 7 BYE week with the starting QB job.

Wow…teaching is an honorable profession. But that doesn’t mean you are qualified to teachi how to build a competitive football team. Did you give “A’s'” or “B’s” for “C-” or “D” work? That is what you are proposing. Who in the world would offer Winston a five year, $20 million dollar a year contract, with his body of work? We don’t even know he will be a quality back up three years from now. Let him play…let him prove he is a quality NFL QB…and pay him accordingly.

I have been holding out for Jameis to mature as he can look really good at times. But the truth is that the book is out on Jameis. Put him under pressure and he gets erratic and makes bad decisions with bad technique. That’s why he throws so many picks and fumbles. And doesn’t convert nearly enough in the red zone. It’s that simple, Bucs fans. Jameis certainly has the football intelligence and talent but not the mental makeup to be a starter in this league. I expect us to go 16 games with him then the Bucs will let him go. He’ll be a credible backup for some other team and may play if someone gets injured. Time will tell…
