GMC mad at Bucs legend?
Former Bucs stud defensive tackle Gerald McCoy had a revealing media session yesterday but he was short on some details.
Earlier this summer, after the Bucs cut him and then gave his No. 93 to new Bucs defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, McCoy aired his grievances on national television. Mabye GMC was triggered because it went to a guy who has been GMC’s rival in both status and performance since the two played for then-bitter rivals in college, Oklahoma and Nebraska, respectively.
GMC sounded off on what he thought was a low stunt by the Bucs for not stashing his number aside like Mike Alstott’s and wondered why the team would treat a former player this way whose name and number will someday go up on the stadium’s walls, so GMC believes.
This didn’t sit well with Warren Sapp. The Hall of Fame Bucs defensive tackle whose number is justly retired, one of three retired Bucs numbers (Lee Roy Selmon, Derrick Brooks wore the others), had his say during training camp and suggested GMC was being petty.
“Last time I checked, those were Hall of Famers and champions [in the Ring of Honor],” Sapp said. “We didn’t go to one playoff game with [GMC] and not one damn divisional title, so, I think he owes some of those hundred million dollars back if you go ‘give it to me’ in that sense.”
(Some background: GMC and Sapp have been tight for years. The bond began when GMC entered the 2010 draft and during an appearance on “Total Access” on NFL Network, which Sapp co-hosted that night, GMC told Sapp he was his hero and the man he patterned his game after. GMC added that he nearly went to “The U,” Sapp’s alma mater, because he wanted to be like Sapp.
Sapp and GMC spoke often, sometimes twice a week during the seasons GMC was with the Bucs. And Sapp often loudly defended GMC when GMC’s haters got too full of themselves.
Well, reading David Newton’s new piece on BSPN about GMC, it seems the relationship has cooled. Apparently GMC is peeved at Sapp speaking his mind about the Ring of Honor controversy.
“Warren Sapp was looked at as my family,” McCoy said Tuesday. “I considered him my family. He’d been at my house, met all my family, Facetimed the little ones.
“So, yeah, I considered him my family. He was my mentor at first, and then became my family.”
Newton added when GMC was asked if he has iced out Sapp from his inner circle, GMC shrugged. When asked if GMC had something to say to Sapp, GMC, per Newton, just shrugged again.
Someone is hurt.
Joe has no idea what criteria Team Glazer uses to enshrine a former Bucs player into the Ring of Honor. It seems being on a team that had postseason success is a big thing because guys like Jameis Wilder and Hugh Green, who never won a playoff game with the Bucs, are not in the Ring of Honor. Yet, Paul Gruber, who never made a Pro Bowl but was a starter on the 1999 squad that advanced to the NFC title game, is in the Ring of Honor.
GMC made six Pro Bowls, but like Green and Wilder, he played during one of the darkest periods in Bucs history. Unlike Green and Wilder, GMC has never played in a playoff game.
GMC is worthy of strong consideration for the Ring of Honor.
Was GMC a franchise legend like Warren Sapp? Of course not.

Just saw on NFL network that the Bucs power rankings dropped from 29 to 31 just barely in front of the Dolphins. Brings up a thought: will he Jags/Bucs/Fins combine for 10 wins this season?

As I’ve heard pointed out elsewhere, GMCs tenure and achievements are in the same neighborhood as To y Mayberry. Perhaps in a very slow year Mayberry makes the ring, but at some point just being on a roster for a decade with minimal team success shouldn’t e enough. GMC was the best and longest-tenured player in a bad era of Buc football, but I would be okay with this whole era of the team not earning immortality in the RoH.

Warren Sapp might have been a prick off the field while Gerald was a saint.
In the end it all comes down to your performance on game day.
McCoy in his prime was a decent DT.
Warren Sapp in his prime, he took over games, he dominated.
I’m sure Warren has a old jock strap laying around that he can lend McCoy to sniff.

GMC is mentally weak. He is a good guy, but mentally he is too soft. This is why our defense struggled under his leadership. He can’t take criticism and always plays the victim. Look at how this defense is different since he has been gone. To compare yourself with Hall of famers and SB winners when you haven’t even made a playoff game is crazy. Good riddance GM!!

This is a joke? ..right? C’mon Joe, give us one example where he iced a game for us? That saving sack. That saving tackle. A fumble recovery. A tipped pass. Maybe an INT. He wasn’t a team player. He refused to play any other positions across the D-line. He got in the pro bowls because of popularity. Because he was highest paid player on a faceless team. And he liked playing with toys. No he does not deserve the ROH and he owes us some money back that he stole the last few years he was here.

GMC was a talented player. Not a leader like Sapp though. Not a guy who will get in his teammates for cheating a gap and giving up the big play. GMC wasn’t unapproachable after a tough loss. The team was hoping GMC would be the centerpiece but proved to be nothing more than a complimentery piece. Then you factor in the crying he did all spring and its like gtfoh b!ch.

Absolutely NOT! He was a good guy that did alot for the community and went to several pro bowls. He did not do enough on the field to warrant going in our Ring of Honor! Elite players take over games, especially ones in clutch moments which he did NOT do! Sorry GMC…and get over being released by the Bucs. You sound like a ex girlfriend…

Warren Sapp ought to keep his fat mouth shut. As good as he was, I guarantee you that if he played on the teams that GMac played on, he’d have the exact same results. In spite of playing on bad teams with crappy secondaries and not a single person to help rush the passer until JPP last year, that man made 6 pro bowls and was the focal point of every offensive game plan. Furthermore, the current NFL players voted him into the top 100 players several straight years, which to me is more telling than any pro-bowl. Can you guys imagine how many more sacks GMac would have if he had a defensive scheme and a secondary that actually made the QB hesitate to throw three ball for a split second? The defenses under Mike Smith and Lovie Smith were not just dead last but were damn near record setting in their futility. How many horrible defensive coordinators and defensive players surrounded Sapp? If any of you think that Warren would’ve made a difference on GMac’s teams, then you ought to slap yourself.
Now on the flipside of the coin, I’m gonna go out and say this: if GMac took Warren Sapp’s place on the old Bucs defense, the Bucs defense would’ve still been as good or almost as good with GMac in his place.
Warren, you were only as good as your defense. So please, quit walking around like you’re the end all be all. Had GMac played on any other team with a decent, not good or great but simply DECENT defense, he’d have HOF numbers. And the fact that his NFL peers recognize him as one of the greatest players in his generation, IN SPITE OF playing on crappy teams with crappy players, that’s enough for me to shove in Warren’s mouth and down his throat.

Are you drunk? Or you’re McCoy writing that comment! The fact you would even say some of those things is a joke. The reason the Bucs became good was because of Sapp. He took on the media mid week and backed up his talk on Sundays. You want to compare numbers first 5 years in the league Sapp had 42 sacks, two of those seasons had plus 10, second year had 9 ( which would have been McCoy’s second best season ) McCoy first five years he had 27 sacks. Sapp’s 6th season he had 16.5 sacks and took his team to a bad call away from the super bowl. That year 99, Sapp 99 won DPOY. McCoy has never gotten close to those numbers, just like he’s never gotten close to the playoffs. I could keep going but it would be a waste of time…
