It seems the creator, curator and overall guru of Pro Football Talk, the great Mike Florio, is like a lot of Bucs fans.
After America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, threw his second pick-six of the day that doomed the Bucs against the 49ers, Joe posted on Twitter it was time for the Bucs’ organization to start heavily scouting top quarterbacks in the quarterback-rich draft next winter.
Joe is not yet ready to throw the towel in on Jameis but the end is near if he doesn’t radically change up his game. He has 15 games to do so.
A whole lot of Jameis supporters Joe knows, who read Joe’s tweet, had the same reaction. For Jameis to have the support system he has (teammates, coaches) and for him to work out all offseason knowing he couldn’t shat the bed like that again, and to play like he did, it was very bad.
Florio, in his weekday “PFT Live” show seen mornings on NBC Sports Network, seemed genuinely dejected that Jameis had a rough outing as he spoke with his co-host, former Bucs quarterback Chris Simms, who was also bummed out with Jameis’ play.
“Same ol’ Jameis,” Florio began, referring to Jameis’ picks. “I said all offseason that [pairing Bucco Bruce Arians with Jameis] was either going to go extremely well or it is going to be a disaster for the Buccaneers. And I was rooting for ‘very well’ because I like Bruce Arians. But I have a feeling that by Halloween Bruce Arians is going to wish he had not come back to coaching.”
Simms summed up his feeling about Jameis melting down — again — as “disappointing” because the Bucs, he said, are his team since the franchise drafted him.
As far as Florio referencing Halloween, that’s about the launch date when Bucs fans annually begin draft talk in detail for the follow spring.

Jameis is deficit to this team in every way. And don’t give me this crap about two of three of the picks were someone else’s fault. Jameis L. “Loser” Winston has the same challenges as other QBs that are proven to be much better. They can blame their INTs on others too. He is bottom of the bottom tier of starting QBs in the NFL. Why can’t the Bucs have a guy a DeShaun Watson, Russel Wilson, or Pat Mahomes? This human trash needs to go.

I agree. Jamies has proven he is not coachable. He has Tom Moore, Leftwich, Shula, and Arians to help him and yet, he is still Jameis. Remember Jimbo Fisher screaming at him on the sideline after yet another stupid decision? Very few NFL coaches do the screaming route. The expectation is to learn and integrate. Jameis simply cannot do that.

I don’t know about BA. He’s been around the block. Despite what he says publicly about JW (what else could he or should he say), he had to know that a flame out was possible or even probable given JW’s 4 year history. It seems just as likely to me that BA viewed this as a no lose situation with one of the best QB draft classes in recent history just around the corner. Either JW kills it (and he drafts a moldable QB in round 3 or later) or he gets whoever he wants at the top of the draft. I just don’t buy the party line that he made a life altering decision to rejoin the coaching ranks based solely on his ability to salvage JW.

I have seen enough, Bucs fans deserve a better quarterback. He throws the most picks in the entire league! He always has, it is of supreme importance but yet he cannot stop doing it. I hope they trade him by the end of October if possible. There are several good quarterbacks in the next draft. Joe please give us some articles on that. I have seen enough, BA finding reasons to make his piks acceptable was over the top! No qb is routinely throwing 3 piks a game like him.

This is Jameis. He throws absolute dimes to WRs and in the same game throws to the wrong color jersey. This has been the case since he’s been here. We’ve surrounded him with weapons, better coaching, and what looks like better defensive play. I would not be expecting him to be here with this type of play moving forward.
Can he change? Well, we’re waiting. I’d love to see a turnaround but I just don’t know.

Also, he’s the best QB on the roster right now. I don’t expect him to be benched, and certainly not in favor of Griffin.
There’s a reason they signed Gabbert in the offseason and it’s not because of their glowing confidence in Ryan Griffin!

It wasnt just the interceptions either, those are just a byproduct of bigger issues. He cant throw timing routes. He cant go through progressions fast enough. He refuses to take check downs.
All of these things equal late throws that miss open receivers when they are actually open which means throwing into tighter windows and forcing him to try to put more muscle into the pass and causing an inaccurate pass…….and when all else fails, throw it up for grabs instead of into the dirt to live another day.
They wont be able to fix him.

both are not really starters and not really back ups…they are tweeners…
tweeners are: a qb thats sort of a meh starter, or an uber back up

I think Jameis will be fine.
The defense seems to be playing well and Rojo looks like the real deal.
The offensive line wasn’t too bad.
The Bucs should win easily in Carolina if they can control McCafferty. He is all they have.
They have totally clipped Cam’s wings. He looks terrible.

jameis’ mechanics are like totally screwed up…he looked like a complete mess out there sunday…his feet were happier than i have ever ever seen them…he looked scared like dilfer in 1995-96…
maybe he was shell shocked by the abuse he took in the cleveland game…because that was the last time he played…
he might be scared of his own offensive line…something is definitely up…he did not look relaxed in the pocket for one second…BA definitely sees this…
kwon knows jameis well, and prolly wacked him because he saw he was a mess, and gambled that one good shot would get him super shook…
i think it’s a core offensive line problem as the main issue…
i.e. bennonoch getting cut…dot is next – and he knows it…
then cappa after dot, if things don’t improve fast…

Jameis has struggled against the better defenses since he came into the league.
When he has bad games he gets desperate and reverts to a less controlled sand lot type of football. This has to affect his confidence and self doubt is not a confidence builder. My concern is
if he repeating these types of games, he will no longer have the confidence to lead the team effectively.

Run game good – over 100 yards rushing
Defense great – only gave up 17 pts and scored 7 themselves -250 yards total
Oline decent but not terrible
Pretty much ideal situations for a team to win
Bucs have carolina and giants next 2 games
Both winnable . Easier games left on schedule. And would Love to have Cam show up all bummed …wearing a funky outfit and jacked up hair to his post game press conference.

Joe….you keep saying Jameis has 15 games to improve…..I think not…..more like 6 or 7…..if he is not playing extremely well by then, the Bucs will pull the plug.
The minute they decide he will not be extended, he’s history.
They should let him go to FA….some team will give him a healthy backup contract and we will get a good comp pick.
That will finally give Ryan Griffin some NFL snaps….and who knows what will happen with him?

Adam from NY … ‘What if’ is such a great question. Started wondering last night ‘What if Jameis HAS been OVER-COACHED?’ What would it look like? Could it look like what we saw in his performance on Sunday?
I’m starting to think that’s exactly what might’ve happened. A (still) young man with lots of weight (in terms of expectations) on his shoulders. A history of inconsistency behind him … his career potentially hanging in the balance. Four very experienced coaches telling him what to do right and what to avoid. And to Jameis it’s very likely all coming down to ‘Don’t make a mistake, don’t make a mistake. Trust your teammates and the coaches. Just DO YOUR JOB and we’ll win.’
From the very git-go, I thought Jameis looked tentative. I think there’s a decent chance that he was trying so hard to ‘be someone he’s not’ that he lost himself in the process. Very possibly a good chance that that the first INT (off OJ’s hands) got to him and he had trouble shaking it. We’ve always had TWO Jameises … Good Jameis and Bad Jameis. ‘What if’ four voices in his head has quadrupled that number and he’s lost his identity? IF that’s the case, HOPEFULLY BA sets him straight & gets him back on-track by Thursday.

Jameis didn’t lose this game all by himself. There’s 15 left. We saw progress with the ground attack, and the defense was spectacular in comparison to the puke Mike Smith came up with. Jameis will never be Tom Brady, but BA might drag a Bret Favre out of him over the course of the season. I remember Farve throwing 6 interceptions in a single game as an NFL veteran. Sunday sucked, but I want to see what BA does with Jameis after 16 games. A single game against a really tough defense is not a great gauge.

1) Jameis sucked on Sunday
2) James has shown he can bounce back……..He played better after the Cincy game last year and after the Tennesee debacle in 2015 so he has it in him.
3) Bruce arians is a very good coach and smart person, he is proven. He would not have taken this job if he did not think that this team could be better than it was on sunday.
4) Its week #1. Nobody other than New England is ready on week#1
5) if Jameis throws for 350 yards 4 tds and no INTS and we win on Thursday night than everything changes
Im with everyone else im very disappointed and discouraged with how Jameis was still making the same mistakes as he did in Years 1-4. Im not giving him any excuses. I still hold out glimmer of hope that he improves but would jnot be surprised if it goes either way with this cat. We should have drafted Mariota he is a much smarter person and a better QB. I am holding on to the hope that it is just week #1 and they will figure it out but if not Jameis will be a complete bust………if he is not already

Arains was brought in to fix Jameis, and now we’re stuck with all three. Arains, Jameis, and Licht. Bruce Arains is a dinosaur, and so is his offense. We should’ve blown the whole thing up starting with Licht, and finding a competent G.M. who could find a younger H.C. that would run a more modern offense. If Jameis flames out this year which looks very likely we’ll still have Licht drafting the next QB. Reality is as long as the Glazers own this team they’ll never field a winner.

I hate being harsh on OJ but he earned it. 2017 picks Deshaun Watson and Ryan Ramcyzk were out there contributing to a hard fought game. OJ was either invisible or dropping passes or getting ran over etc.

There is one thing good NFL quarterbacks DO NOT DO, that is PANIC. Ronde Barber said thats exactly what Jameis did on his last pick. As Buc fans we’ve seen this before. When good NFL defenses put pressure on him his game folds. There are many other quarterbacks in the league that are able to realize that if a play isn’t working out the way it should, take the down and play another, throw it away or find a dump off. Winston hasn’t learned that option. He holds on to the ball trying to find a play downfield and then because he held it to long there is no timing. The Bucs need a quarterback that is just average or middle to good. They don’t need a superstar. The new prototype NFL quarterbacks are the Russell Wilsons, Patrick Maholmes, Lamar Jackson, DeShaun Watson, Carson Wentz and Baker Mayfield. All are slippery, can deliver the ball from various angles and when they scramble they are difficult to get to. I’m not convinced in this day and age that guys like Winston, Newton, Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, even Aaron Rogers can be successful in a league where you have to be fast, mobile and have an accurate arm all in one.

How can literally anyone still feel confident in or defend Jameis? He is the worst starting QB in football. I’d rather have Blake Bortles start than him and he has just as many turnovers (or did before this week) as Jameis. I didn’t really get into football until 1996. I’ve been a Bucs fan since and in that 23 years, there has never been a QB I’ve disliked more than Winston. I’d take a 50 year old Brad Johnson over this crap heap we have now.
Like I said in another article, the only way we could possibly get a good year out of Winston is if there was a stipulation in his contract that for every turnover he has, he loses $1M! Maybe if he knew his play would directly affect his wallet, he’d actually play like he cares, because I don’t believe he does now.
For those that defend him, name any other starting QB’s in their 5th season who is still saying EVERY press conference “I just need to get/be better”. I seriously doubt you can.

You (and some others) might be willing to throw the rest of this season down the toilet, but I’m not. Played sports most of my life, and I never played a game to lose. Don’t intend to start now.
I saw a very impressive Bucs’ defense Sunday. Not perfect by any means, but light-years ahead of what I saw last year and before that. Yes we lost 31-17, BUT … far as I’m concerned the defense only gave up 14 points (2 TDs & 1 FG were on the Bucs’ offense & S/Ts). For the first game of the season, with a brand-new DC and largely rebuilt defense, THAT’S impressive. No idea if it’ll continue (especially if we don’t start winning), but it’s a great beginning.
Now we need the offense to do its’ part. And IMO that starts with ‘Don’t turn the friggin ball over to the other team’. THAT’S the killer as we saw yesterday. Bucs’ offense put up a grand total of 10 points Sunday, and gave away 14 points. There’s no world that I know of where you win a game like that. But I also believe that we’re MUCH better than that, because we returned essentially the same offense that we had last year.
Which leads me to believe that ‘something’ went on Sunday that fundamentally impacted the effectiveness of our passing game in particular. Yes, losing Hump didn’t help, but we’ve still got many potent weapons. Personally think it had much to do with game-planning, play-calling and blocking-schemes. But hey, that’s what BA & his minions get paid the big bucks to figure out. We’ll find out Thursday how well THEY did that.

But sadly while I certainly hope that happens I believe the operative word is IF.
I’ve been the blog optimist but that performance Sunday was a real gut wrenching experience. We answered most questions with optimistic results except for the single most important question…QB!
JW has just demonstrated such losing ways from the neck up. He’s got a strong arm…is a deceptively good runner…elusive…has plenty of heart…but he just doesn’t have good judgement and he lacks anticipation.
Most time if you wait until the target is open to throw it’s too late…NFL DB’s just are too quick to recover…the ball has to be there before target or DB. JW seems unable to pull this off.
Many times when he does complete a pass we marvel because his cannon arm allowed him to toss a complete dart just before a tight window slams shut. Sadly many times though the window does shut and it’s a defensed pass or worse an int.

Its simple for me at this point, is JW an asset or a liability? The accountability sessions week after week will expose the truth, its done in front of the team, they will see JW exposed week after week. The players and the coaches know the truth and they will.support him until THEY determine he is a liability. His smooth talking words and energy won’t be able to overcome his actions on the field, especially when it counts.
My only support of JW at this point hope, which is usually all that is left before the end. In this case, his tenure in Tampa.

I’d bring in Colin Kapernick. New England would do it. That’s the difference. Do something bold Tampa Bay. My bad, that’s NOT..in our DNA. I feel so sorry for our fans. We deserve so much better than to..drown our sorrows in alcohol every time our Bucs take the field to numb our pain and sorrow. Do you think the Pats care what we think about them signing Antonio Brown? They could care less. Why? its simple. They will do anything to WIN. That’s all that matters to them..WINNING. I give Jameis 8 games. Lets see if he can improve. I have very little faith in him except as a backup.

Winston looked bad on Sunday.. Worst than I could’ve possibly imagined. He’s playing scared and that’s the one thing I can’t stand in a QB. Reckless I will live with, tentative I can’t take. But the entire passing game was horrible. I keep hearing about how great the Bucs weapons are but there isn’t enough separation being generated with the play design. Watch the All-22, guys just have no separation versus how other teams do. The route trees were producing congestion. The other thing is I can’t believe how many times they stopped working on their routes as Winston scrambled. Godwin… and this worried me when he was moved to the slot, just can’t separate like he needs to in short area spaces. That has to get better. Evans did look sick. Howard, lets all hope he was sick. Perriman played just like he did his entire career. None of the backs looked that competent in the passing game. Thank goodness Brate looks to finally be getting back in stride.
Winston was bad, but he had PLENTY of company to help him along.
