Solid First Start

September 8th, 2019

While a couple of second-year Buccaneers on defense showcased their weaknesses today, a couple of sophomore offensive players shined.

Joe already wrote about the emergence of running back Ronald Jones (see the home page). But Joe also has to commend fan punching bag Alex Cappa, starting his first NFL game at right guard. He was not the problem today.

Yes, Cappa got bull-rushed in the red zone for a key third-down sack of Jameis Winston late in the game, but there were hardly many black marks on his report card against the 49ers.

Not bad at all for a guy out of Humboldt State going the distance for the first time against a very talented 49ers defensive front. Cappa’s feet looked good overall, and the running game was better than it’s been in a long time.

Two weeks ago too many fans were screaming for the Bucs to pick up a guard on waivers or make an eleventh-hour trade to replace Cappa. If the Bucs had done that, the odds are the new guy wouldn’t have played as well as Cappa did today.

Let’s hope Cappa builds on this game.

  2. Zzbuc Says:

    Good and bad plays!!
    Dame as Dotson!!
Rest of the OL was better that expected

  3. Ken Says:

    Wesley nailed it…..

  4. bojim Says:

    lol. Wesley.

  5. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Let Cappa throw the football

…can’t be any worse than Jameis……they’ll both miss and be off target

  6. Jean Lafitte Says:

Wasn’t it Joe responsible for a lot of the hate on Cappa? You don’t think one negative article after another had anything to do with it? No culpability at all. Sometimes I wonder if JBF is an asset to the fanbase or just a bully pulpit to spin players in a negative spotlight. That’s quite a conspiracy theory there. Jiminy Christmas. –Joe

  7. Dubcity6 Says:

Lol really? He got ran thru like 10 times that I saw. Twice that led directly to a sack. Others that led to tackles for a loss. Smh. This is sad when yall consider that good

  8. 813bucboi Says:

    And white?

    GO BUCS

  9. 813bucboi Says:

Cappa played decent…he played good when it mattered….that’s all that counts

    GO BUCS

    medicore

  11. knucknbuc Says:

hahahaha joe would think this was a solid start. joe loves bad players playing mediocre to good games hyping them up. trash.
So wait a minute. You just wrote the guy played “mediocre” and that’s somehow a problem for his first NFL start against a good D-line?–Joe

  12. OklahomaBucFan Says:

Dotson is the weak link we all know it and have known it. How our front office doesn’t know it is down right ludacris

  13. Tmaxcon Says:

maybe I’ve been too quick to judge cappa and rojo

    they showed some promise today

  14. knucknbuc Says:

he was bad u said he was mediocre joe not me him and Dotson were trash.

  15. Hodad Says:

Yes Joe, mediocre is a problem. Playing O.K., and average is not playing winning football. That’s the problem with you, and to many Buc fans, They accept average, and mediocre. You’ve been calling Jameis America’s Q.B. going on five years now, and one could only wish he was average, or Mediocre. I’ll lay money right now Cappa no matter how many starts will never sniff a pro bowl. Just like the over hyped Ali Marpet, the turnstile D. Smith, and old man holding penalty Dotson. Oh forgot to mention Jensen, one of the highest paid centers in the league. Everyone of them mediocre, and average, your boy Cappa fits right in!

  16. Jason S. Mclaurin Says:

He was great today and was overshadowed by the bad play of Dotson today. Dotson many penalties left a lot to be desired today along with too many funbles and bumbles by OJ Howard today as well. I think OJ can bounce back of course by not going after extra yardage on every contact play but Dotson he should be gone tomorrow. No need in trading the guy or anything just simply let him go now plus he turns 34 in a month. Tbh Capps showed me today that if they are ready to move Bailey in the lineup they can slide him to RT easily. Two red zone holding penalties that really shows the step he’s lost and it cost us today. BA rolling the dice on 4th down was crucial as well. Risk it but no biscuit from him imo. Licht gotta step up though. I know Bailey can play and I know Cappa can easily be moved to RT in order to cut Dotson.

Hold the phones!!! Did tmax just say something not only positive, but not about gmc or the glazers!? Dear lord. A running game, a kicker, a defense and the pass game struggling and tmax saying he may have been wrong and said something positive!? Am I seriously in a dream

  18. Jason S. Mclaurin Says:

Tmax right about the assessment of RoJo and Cappa

  19. teacherman777 Says:

    He sucked!!

Go rewatch the game. He was thrown back on every passing play!

He got bullrushed like a biotch all game!

    Dotson also looked horrible.

The right side of the line was pushed into the pocket all game!

    Cappa got owned today!

    Played well? What a joke!

  20. Buchead407 Says:

He got bullied. What game did you watch

  21. teacherman777 Says:

    @buchead

    Exactly! Was Joe drunk?

    Cappa got bullied all game!

Devin White looked lost and scared.

MJ Stewart is a Leonard Johnson clone. A linebacker in a DB body.

LVD should be calling the defense. White is not ready!!

We could have traded out of the #6 pick and still drafted Devin White or Devin Bush.

But I didnt want White. He is 5-11 and stocky. Hes not long or fluid.

I agree with Joe that White was a dumb pick.

We should have traded back again 2 or 3 times to stock up on 2nd round picks.

Sean Bunting is not a plug and play starter either!

Another retarded draft by Jason Licht.

FYI- Donald Penn played great yesterday for Washington!

Donald Penn should have retired a Buc!

    Fu** Jason Licht!

  22. unbelievable Says:

    He did well run blocking.

Was awful in pass protection most of the game though.

Not quite as bad D Smith and D Dotson though (getting b!tvhed up by rookies playing their first game)

Most overrated tackles in the league. Go Licht!

  23. Dubcity6 Says:

Some of yall have such a low bar. Rojo was nothing special, he finally looked like not a bust… that’s why people are excited. Even tho 49ers were playing the pass all game long… and Cappa was terrible. Idk what people look at sometimes
