If you were horrified by the (non-) pass protection in the third preseason game, in which America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, was running for his life, word from NFL.com is for Bucs fans to get used to it.
The trainwreck that was the third preseason game will be closer to the norm if not the norm for the Bucs this season, they claim. Why is that? Well, Ali Bhanpuri types this is somewhat the norm for the offenses run by Bucco Bruce Arians.
But there’s a painful flipside to Arians’ system. Because it often exchanges pass protectors for additional route runners, it also requires the five guys up front to win one-on-one battles. This approach works well when you have quick-hitting route concepts or a rock-solid offensive line. However, we know short passes are anathema to the Kangol-wearing coach, and the offensive lines he had in Indy and Arizona were questionable at best — a truth that’s certainly not lost on Luck or Palmer. The recently retired Colts QB had 45 more dropbacks under pressure than the next-closest passer in 2012, when Arians served as interim head coach. Similarly, the Cardinals veteran was hit more in 60 games under B.A. than in 122 total games with the Bengals and Raiders (400 hits to 398). His sacks-per-game figure also soared in Arizona, increasing from 1.7 during his nine-year run in Cincinnati and Oakland to 2.3 in his five seasons in the desert.
And here-in lies the potential issue for Winston: The O-line Arians inherited in Tampa is, to put it simply, not good. The head coach went so far as to lambast the unit’s performance after the Preseason Week 3 tilt against the Browns, when the quintet was manhandled consistently by Cleveland’s defensive front. Anyone expecting Arians’ attacking philosophy to change — even with offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich calling the plays — is misguided. Buccaneers QB2 Ryan Griffin ranked second across the league in five-step drops during the preseason, while 17 of Winston’s 39 total dropbacks were five-step drops, per PFF. Both finished the exhibition period in the top 10 in sacks taken (Winston, T-9; Griffin T-2). Let’s be honest: Arians is set in his ways. I mean, does the guy in the following video sound like someone who would suddenly transition to a horizontal passing game for the sake of his lackluster offensive line?
This is disturbing.
Now Joe has largely defended or waved off the loud criticism folks have for the Bucs offensive line. People complaining about it is like someone sounding an alarm that the sun rises in the east. It’s like the humming of neighborhood lawn mowers early in an otherwise quiet morning.
Joe has seen bad offensive lines, including from the Bucs as recently as a few years ago. This current front five isn’t that.
Except, that third preseason game, Joe was alarmed. If that is the type of blocking Bhanpuri expects from this season, Joe might very well have a stroke during a game.
And America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, may be crippled.

Arians is not the offensive coord. Leftwich is the coord and you have said they were running screens, and some quicker slants during camp. I am hoping they will use those schemes to hopefully slow down the rush.

80% of the offensive snaps should be screen passes. OL don’t have to block without a running start. Lol

1. The Bucs O-Line isn’t good enough to protect Winston long enough for the longer routes to develop
2. Winston. is. not. good. at. the. deep. ball.
Hopefully Arians adjusts his game plan to the team he actually has instead of the team he wishes he had.

Let’s face it; even in Koetters Max Protect schemes, JayMiss got hit. JayMiss also made bad decisions as a result of the hits he absorbed. Does anyone think that’s gonna change anytime soon given what history tells us about the BA offense?
5-11, if we’re lucky, may be the absolute best record we can expect.

IMO, PS #3 was GOOD for the OL.
Perhaps some extra motivation about what can happen if they get sloppy.

We can only hope Cappa has improved to capable. We can hope Dotson doesn’t play like he’s a year older. Maybe Jensen can play like he’s the second highest paid center in the league. Hopefully Marpet actually becomes a pro bowler, instead of being one only in the minds of low standard Buc fans. Lastly D. Smith needs to live up to his big pay day. If all that happens we should be fine. I’m certainly not betting on that, are you Joe?

Dear Jameis Winston don’t be stupid these people will get you injured ruin your career and earning potential before paying you 30 mil per year for your services. Some don’t think you’re worth twenty mil per year.
Go down, take a dive, watch the season from the sidelines and let the MAGAFANS I mean MEGAFANS watch Ryan Smith or whatever his name is win more games than you.

Well you cannot block like we did in that 1st quarter vs the Browns. That just isn’t good enough and one extra blocker staying in wont make a difference if our RG gets destroyed off the snap on simple concepts.
But if that happens I expect Bruce to have someone ready to go and pull Cappa from the game. I might almost say the same thing about Dotson. Don’t know how bad he truely playing that game but the consensus is that it sucked.

I’m pretty sure BA talked in his press conference today about reputation as no risk it no biscuit with those QBs (Luck and Palmer) and hinged what would likely be different with Winston, listen to the presser, sounds like quicker developing plays. Jameis can praise his offensive line and take the Blame publicly all he wants, but when Bruce says get rid of ten plays you don’t want, that will be ten plays he has no confidence in the offensive line

Unfortunately Licht has failed miserably putting a team together. I know Jameis is a good QB, that could one day be great. Unfortunately, this roster sucks and needs to be rebuilt. Probably can’t do that and pay the QB $30M a year. I would suggest we blow it up next year, draft lineman for both sides and look for a QB a year or two down the road with another top 5 pick. Too many holes on this team to blow on a franchise QB that has no way to succeed as the team is currently constructed. Probably should have started the rebuild this year, but the Glazers instead brought in a good coach and extended the GM’s contract even though he is failing horribly.

Since Arians isn’t calling the plays how do we know for sure that it is his total offense? The first drive against Pittsburgh looked nothing like Arians offense. It looked more like a west coast offense. Maybe Leftwich has his own offense which the short passing game is more prevalent.

Ah, rrsrq, it’s nice to finally find someone else here that actually listens to what Ariians says, and then thinks about it a little. Quite refreshing!
Part of the emphasis that has been put on Jameis Winston’s decision making process this year is to get the passes off sooner as well as avoiding interceptions and fumbles. It also means taking the sack when you can’t break away. The best, dare I say elite, QBs always have had to learn these things.
Jameis is approximately one year behind in his development. This year will tell the true story for his remaining career.

This is a big problem and the Glazers are to blame and Jason Licht is right in line !!!! This is a No No and the opposite of how New England treats the qb position !!! This is also the problem with a coach having control of the GM !!! I like a lot about Arians but this is as bad as it gets and trust me he won’t be here past two maybe three years and that’s why you need a strong GM and ownership !!! The Glazers have serious guidance issues and just don’t see the whole picture , they would be well served to bring back Rich McKay as team president to help guide them !!! This Isn’t going to end well and Jameis ‘s agent would be well served to get him out of here . Jameis can play in this league 12 more years but uber the Glazers and Licht it may be 3 , May be One ??? Miracle if he starts 16 and that is failure of Licht and the Glazers at the highest level !!! It’s beyond mind boggling how inept they are regarding the importance of protecting the Qb !! You don’t get the number one overall pick very often and they have not a clue and have done a terrible job of protecting it !!! JOE this cannot be overstated and it is a direct repeat of Indy and I have been calling out Indy for years ( until last year) and , well they ruined thes qb prospect in the past 10 years !!! This is as bad as bad gets and they should be called out until they become prudent in their effort to protect the qb !!! Dotson d plus, right guard f minus Cappa or whom ever, , Jensen d plus , Left side b minus and c plus . That Ain’t good Enough but the thing is it’s not that hard to fix , you just have to be committed !!! It’s just not hard !!!
