The Case For Jameis
August 29th, 2019A lot of Bucs fans have grown impatient with America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.
This crowd isn’t yet convinced Jameis can lead the Bucs to the playoffs, and with the Bucs mired in a salary cap crunch, they don’t believe in the long run that keeping Jameis at some $28 million for next year (at least) is smart.
Instead, some of these same fans want a housecleaning. They want the Bucs to draft one of the wunderkinder quarterbacks coming out in the draft, unload everyone not named “Mike Evans” who is not on a rookie contract and start from scratch.
This is not a unique argument in NFL circles. Quarterbacks, unless they are super-elite like a Ben Roethlisberger or a Drew Brees, eat up more cap space than they may be worth, preventing teams from building around their quarterbacks.
But without a quarterback, a team is doomed.
One guy who has an expensive quarterback and is struggling to pay other stars is Atlanta’s Thomas Dimitroff. In a feature typed by Kevin Clark for “The Ringer,” Dimitroff had one word for getting rid of your expensive quarterback and starting all over.
“Asinine.”
“I was literally moved to say ‘That’s asinine,’” Dimitroff said of the first time he heard of [dumping a starting quarterback for a cheap albeit talented rookie]. “I understand the idea. But when you’re sitting on this side of the desk, and you think about the precariousness of churning a quarterback out like that, going through a few years, and saying, ‘OK, go, time to find the next one.’ You want to talk about unnerving and unsettling and staying up all night? That’s what a lot of people do who don’t have a quarterback in this league.”
Here is the difference: Dimitroff has an elite quarterback in Matty Ice. The Dixie Chicks, despite being in a salary cap pinch, are loaded with stud players and have been mostly a regular participant in the postseason this decade, reaching the Super Bowl three seasons ago.
The Bucs are not there yet. During the same timeframe, the Dixie Chicks have been playoff contenders, the Bucs have been an NFL joke. With no end in sight.
That is the pinch the Bucs are in. Can the Bucs afford to keep a quarterback who has yet to reach his potential while the team continues to lose and lose and lose some more?
More importantly, can the Bucs afford not to?
Big decision that frankly, Joe has no clue what the answer is on Aug. 29.
August 29th, 2019 at 7:10 am
Jameis is like riding a bike with a flat tire….I know “there is no hope in football”…but I sure hope Jameis can correct his QB flaws
August 29th, 2019 at 7:14 am
I am no Jameis fan. I think he has holes all throughout his gameplay and decision making processes. If he hasn’t figured it out by year 5 he likely never will. He’ll be a helluva good back up though. But I hope he succeeds because I am a bucs fan. Time will tell.
August 29th, 2019 at 7:15 am
In all seriousness, does anyone REALLY believe Winston has not already reached his full potential? Fifth year, number one overall draft pick? Who, according to Bruce Arians “is still learning in the red zone”? Does anyone REALLY expect a “new and improved” Winston? With his stupid mistakes on the field, on the sidelines, and off the field, who blatantly lied to his team mates, coaches and front office? Does anyone really believe we’ll wake up one day, and Winston will be in the Brady, Brees, Rodgers, Wentz, Roethlisberger (well, maybe him), Rivers, Mahomes, Wilson, Ryan, Watson, Carr club? NO!!! At least, no one with a brain.
August 29th, 2019 at 7:22 am
We must put a better team behind Jameis…..I am troubled by our lack of depth and the lack of success of many of our draft picks.
At this point, it looks like only 2 of our 8 draft picks will be starters…..White & Gay…..
Now…that’s a mixed bag because that means VH3 & Carlton Davis & Jordan Whitehead are playing better than Bunting, Dean & Edwards…
August 29th, 2019 at 7:30 am
They should be doing all they can to build the roster in the meantime. By mid season they’ll probably reach a verdict on Winston. If he’s on the way out they can use some cap to fill holes in free agency. Downside is they’ll have to sell the farm to get a rookie QB they desire. And even then it may not be possible. This is why they say if you miss on a first round QB it can set the franchise back 5 years.
August 29th, 2019 at 7:31 am
Resign him.. still young, gets better every year, has will to win and tons of talent. Has not played up to his potential thus far because his GM has not done a great job at putting talent around him on both sides of the ball. OL is suspect, DEF been trash for years, Coaches have underwhelmed. Give this guy a real shot with talent and him not having to play superman to win games and we are in a total different position. Fans are not looking at the big picture. You can’t blame Jameis without blaming the Front Office/GM. They have failed him so far
August 29th, 2019 at 7:54 am
I said it yesterday and i will say it here again. The are 2 “best case” scenarios for this franchise this season
A) Winston plays great under this staff and leads us to the playoffs
B) Winston continues to make the same mistakes over and over again which leads to a top 5 pick.
Any season long result that leads to doubt about a Winston extension is bad for this franchise. He needs to be great an earn it or be bad and we move on.
Delaying the potential extension with franchise tags and prove it deals will just waste time of the rest of the core.
August 29th, 2019 at 7:57 am
JW just doesn’t fit the mold of “franchise QB” unfortunately. He’s had 5 years to show that he can settle into the pocket and make a clutch play, he hasn’t done that. He scares no one deep so already he’s a handicap to any offense he plays in. You don’t hitch your wagon to this kind of QB. Getting a rookie with some upside for 2/3 less money would work in this case. If it’s Drew Brees then you sign the dotted line but for JW? Next…
August 29th, 2019 at 7:57 am
We built the team and system around Jameis all wrong. He doesn’t need an extreme talent like Mike Evans as bad as he needs an O-line and running game. He can throw the ball to any receiver as long as its not a bomb. He’s never going to be the quarterback for the greatest show on turf.
He needs an O-line, a running game, and a system that works with his strengths, with short and intermediate throws and the long ball used only to keep the defenses honest.
Licht has a pretty track record of getting good young receivers. Too bad his track record for O-line and running backs has been sub par, to be kind.
Jameis wont win with Licht picking the team. He’s getting the fun flashy players right but its a big fat swing and a miss for the boring work horses in the trenches.
August 29th, 2019 at 8:19 am
The case was thrown out.
August 29th, 2019 at 8:29 am
4 vertical offense is not a QB friendly offense like the read option or west offense. Much of the offense is predicated on med to long passes think SD Chargers “Air Coryell” and “Dan Fouts.”
August 29th, 2019 at 8:32 am
^Chosen One nailed it.
Unload Mike Evans and solidify the o-line. The RB from Wisconsin looks ridiculous. Go stud RB with two stud TEs and Godwin, you have plenty to keep the defense guessing. Evans isn’t worth $20 million to this team….no different then McCoy was worth his salary. We’ve been losing just fine with both those players.
August 29th, 2019 at 8:43 am
I love all the Gator haters on here and guys who have never competed at a high level in any sport but we have to believe you know what’s best for the Bucs and know all things Jameis. I didn’t go to FSU or UF, so I have no bias one way of the other, Jameis best year was when we had the semblance of a running game with Doug Martin. Without a legitimate running game and a reasonably competent defense, Brady, Brees, Wilson et. al will not put a team in the playoffs either. They will put up numbers, which Jameis has done as well. If you believe we blow this thing up by letting Jameis walk after this year, you only prove you have no clue what you are talking about.

Jameis will soon own every franchise record there is despite having the worst defense in franchise history, no ground attack, and a suspect OL. He may never be elite but he is clearly the best shot we have at being competitive in the next decade. Build the OL and get an impact RB and we will win games. Build the DL and we will win championships. Build on the QB we have who loves this team and wants to be here. Starting over with a rookie QB is not an option. It’s giving up.
August 29th, 2019 at 8:58 am
“The Bucs have been an NFL joke.” Truer words have never been spoken. This franchise has been a mess since Chucky left. Just look at the list of head coaches we have had. Wow. How incompetent are the Glazers? I wish they would sell the team.

Very Well Said!
August 29th, 2019 at 9:09 am
The most maddening thing about Jameis is after 56 games we still have no idea how good or bad he is…
He’s not as bad as the critics think and not nearly as good as his diehard supporters think. He’s somewhere in the middle depending on the day and that’s sad for us fans as he was a #1 overall pick who’s rarely played like one
August 29th, 2019 at 9:16 am
The “Winston doesn’t need Mike Evans” takes are ridiculous.
What do u people suggest they trade Evans for? Draft picks that will be used AFTER the season? A vet OL who could walk in FA anyway?
Ya’ll crazy…
August 29th, 2019 at 9:19 am
Owning every franchise passing record over a list of inept QBs is not impressive
No college bias here as I went to Georgetown we didn’t have a team and it’s borderline moronic to root for a school you never attended.
August 29th, 2019 at 9:26 am
Just for the record….I am NOT a Gator fan.
August 29th, 2019 at 9:40 am
Completely agree Bobby M.
August 29th, 2019 at 9:44 am
I blame Licht for most of bucs failure but Winston has to become at least an average qb this year or move on.
August 29th, 2019 at 9:48 am
No matter how great or terrible he is this year or any year, Winston will be the QB here as long as Jason Licht is the GM. No matter what the team’s record is. No matter if they do or don’t sniff the playoffs, and no matter what the salary cap and payroll situation will be. Licht has staked his reputation on making Winston a winning franchise QB here after deciding to make him the #1 overall pick in the draft. He has furnished him weapons and picked 2 coaches that are/
were offensive minds who develope and help QB’s.
I’m sure that Winston breathed a HUGE sigh of relief when Licht got his contract extension because he knew that meant that he would stay in Tampa Bay no matter what.
August 29th, 2019 at 9:51 am
Joey had a good take when he said best case for the Bucs is either to make playoffs, or to end up with a top 5 pick. Anyone who is saying dump Mike Evans needs their head checked.. please remove yourself from the Bay area & move on to another football team.
August 29th, 2019 at 10:02 am
It’s obvious that JW doesn’t throw a good deep ball. I also don’t think that he can read defenses quickly enough. Unfortunately, I don’t think that he’s the answer.
August 29th, 2019 at 10:29 am
My only interest is what is best for the Bucs going toward… Getting rid of a Star QB is stupid but JW has shown he is NOT one of them… Keeping a guy just because he was drafted #1 is equally or maybe more stupid… Marcus Russell would still be a starting qb by that logic… Successful teams know when it is time to move on and not become held back at such critical positions… JW is reckless, careless and riddled with issues that have followed him since youth football… He has become way more of a liability than an asset… It is possible that the Bucs drag this out just long enough to miss out on yet True Star QBs and by the time they decide to draft one, it will be one of the same or lesser quality… The Buccaneers and their fans surely deserve better!
August 29th, 2019 at 10:33 am
One thing good about jameis is every year you get the same interview story.
This is the year !
August 29th, 2019 at 10:44 am
‘he is clearly the best shot we have at being competitive in the next decade. ‘….
What?
So now Jameis is so amazing to you that there is no possibility that the Bucs or any of the 32 teams according to your statement, will draft anyone better than him over the next 10 years…
A Jameis fan for surel
August 29th, 2019 at 10:51 am
Andrew Luck in 4 years threw 55 interceptions. Would have had more but one of those years he played 7 games and threw 15 interceptions.
August 29th, 2019 at 11:11 am
For The Love God stop blaming the O-Line for Winston’s failure as a consistent NFL QB…
Our O-Line was in the top half of the NFL last year for pass blocking (which is the majority of plays called in Koetter’s Offense). They would have been even higher rated (Top 7-10) if Winston didn’t good the ball so long.
Go back and actually watch video of the games from last year. Jameis had plenty of time to throw.
People are using this Browns preseason game as an excuse for Winston because the OL had a bad game.
And enough about this no running game. Martin ran for over 1,400 yards in Winston first year and he led the team to only 6 wins.
No more excuses for Jameis Winston. He’s currently ranked by most NFL experts as the #24 or #25 starting QB for a reason. He’s not elite. He’s not even above average.
August 29th, 2019 at 11:20 am
If he takes a reasonable salary not top tier , for the off field stuff, I’d resign him. But he needs to hit those open deep balls
August 29th, 2019 at 11:39 am
Playoffs or the highway for Jameis is IMO. Then again what if we’re in the 7-9/8-8 and putting us right in the middle of the draft. People need to realize the Bucs may not be in the run for a hot shot QB in the first ten picks.
August 29th, 2019 at 11:44 am
@syl
Luck also had 15 more TD passes than Jameis in one less game
He was also clutch as hell and played consistently well
Please don’t compare Jameis to superior qbs it makes you look silly
August 29th, 2019 at 11:48 am
If I were Jameis and was cut next year, I might think of getting back as a pitcher and trying out for MLB. He’ll play for the Yankees or Red Sox and shut down the Rays every game we play him. But might not even care with this half TB, half Montreal BS. Hope the Licht haters and TB sports fans realize how much more terrible Stuart Sternburg is to the Rays. Should of sold but the idiots make a contract with the trop through 2027. SMH!
August 29th, 2019 at 11:56 am
@ syl
Andrew luck after his 1st 4 years also led the league in total turnovers but idiot buc fans still called him great. You see one idiot on this thread said that luck also threw 15 more tds as if having a defense that can get you the ball back has nothing to do with it. But andrew luck is also white. Big ben has thrown the same amont of ints as winston the past 4 years and he has two sexual assault allegations but is considered elite by this idiot fan base. He too is white. Peyton manning three 24 ints in his 4th year and had put his privates on a female trainer’s forehead. This idiot fanbase considers him great. He too is white. Jameis problem is he is black and thats the reaction you get from hill billy florida.
August 29th, 2019 at 12:10 pm
Picking the Bucs finish in 2019 is like picking a number out of a hat.
August 29th, 2019 at 12:13 pm
If Jameis was winning games he would be worth it
August 29th, 2019 at 12:16 pm
According to Bucsbandit the better than average OL was the reason the Bucs were #1 in passing offense not the QB’s or the Wr/Te’s. Lol
That’s why the QB”s took off and ran so much because the OL gave Jameis so much time to throw.
Boy when these guys have a bone to chew they chew on it forever. Same bone different day.
August 29th, 2019 at 12:27 pm
Morgus good take. He’s definitely not in that “class”, which numerically, puts him in the bottom third of QBs.
Silver lining: But. one could argue that similar to A LOT of players on this team, Jameis has (hopefully) not yet reached his potential. If this coaching staff is half of what they’re cracked up to be, these guys may get coached up and played to their strengths.. who knows, a lot of good could happen 🤷🏽♂️
August 29th, 2019 at 12:53 pm
I want to see Jameis play with a good running game. I hope we get to see that this season. To judge his Fifth season of professional football, we have a bunch of great WR’s for him to throw to, same with our TE group. Our RB’s hands are not all the same across the board.
With the Oline play that is expensively average to below average overall. Yes, I know last season we could pass block, while the first stringer’s last weeks display of five sacks show me we need improvement. If we can find a few solid veteran Olinemen cuts, to hopefully provide depth or replace whoever they are pushing from behind. Give us that and let’s run and roll with it.
All that with the usual grain of salt.
SHOW ME! Don’t tell me SHOW ME! WIN!
Go Bucs!
August 29th, 2019 at 1:00 pm
@Webster
I’m not white, so the racism excuse is laughable. Jameis gets the criticism he gets as it’s deserved. Luck and other qbs you named were never outplayed by a journeyman backup QB. Looking at his on the field performance he hasn’t played up to his draft status.
Jameis has 76 turnovers in 56 career games, 2 of which he only played a half.
Luck had 69 turnovers in his first 55 career games.
Watch the All 22 film and you will see the missed opportunities and bad decisions. The criticism of Jameis is valid and will go away once he plays consistently well
August 29th, 2019 at 1:03 pm
I’d be happy to let JW walk, and NOT draft a QB unless they are the next Manning or Marino etc…
Turn our high draft pick into several picks and rebuild the team, using a vagabond “make due” QB until such a time as a QB becomes relevant…That should appease the anti JW crowd and the “we need a better team around a QB crowd” Operating under the assumption that JW has already peaked, which IMHO he has…ironically, he’s the next Fitzmagic….
If you’re gonna lose, might as well lose while in rebuild mode with a cheap QB than pay JW way more than he’s worth and lament the fact that you can’t build…
August 29th, 2019 at 1:19 pm
See, the funny part about being a Bucs fan is that we either act too quickly or too slowly. Good teams don’t hold on to players that don’t produce. 5 years is plenty of time to figure out what you have.
The solution is actually quite simple! Either Jameis lights it up and the Bucs are successful OR, he struggles and we get rid of him. We can’t keep kicking the can down the road “hoping” we don’t make a mistake.
August 29th, 2019 at 1:27 pm
@Dapostman
I didn’t say that at all, I was merely pointing out that the OL was solid in pass blocking last year. So they can’t be used as an excuse when Winston struggled. Winston was BENCHED for a reason after he came back and didn’t play well.
How many other top tier NFL QBs *GET BENCHED* during a season?
Winston sucks, you’re just now able to see it because your feelings are getting in the way of objective analysis.
August 29th, 2019 at 1:47 pm
@Bucsbandit, you are not objective and I don’t have time to have a battle of wits with an unarmed opponent.
August 29th, 2019 at 1:47 pm
This year is the determining factor for many of us about Jameis’s ability to lead our team. I am a loyal fan (since 1978) but this is a business and it’s about winning. I am all in on you Mr. Winston, but it’s time to win with you or move on brother. Fingers, eyes and toes crossed.🤞🏻
August 29th, 2019 at 1:55 pm
@webster
Andrew Luck had a defense that ranked in the bottom half of the league, in terms of points allowed, in 5 of his 7 seasons. Yet the Colts were perrenial playoff contenders during his time. That is why he is called great.
Ben Roethlisberger has won 2 super bowls and the Steelers are consistantly one of, if not the top passing offenses in the league. They are also perennial playoff contenders. That is why he is called elite.
Peyton Manning has, or has held, every major passing record at some point. He has won MVPs, Super Bowls, tons of playoff appearances, etc. That is why he is called great.
Winston can be white and he still hasnt done anything in this league yet. Race has nothing to do with it.
August 29th, 2019 at 2:43 pm
Is Winston the best young wb in the league no he’s not is he the best QB the Bucs have ever had yes and it’s not even close somebody said he doesn’t make clutch plays but that’s so false he’s had amazing clutch plays in a more qb friendly system better defense he will be so much better now that O line can’t lie I’m worriee ab it
August 29th, 2019 at 2:47 pm
What if he plays well and the team still lose then what????? What if the defense give up the game???? So I don’t know what do you people mean about a make or break season???? Lol lol lol lol football is a team game it takes a team to win 1 football game not just the quarterback!!! Lol lol lol lol
August 29th, 2019 at 4:10 pm
@Webster Luck also played in a weaker conference. Jameis is going against a HOF QB and Ryan and Cam are close to being Hall of famers. I just think folks need to stop whining. Im not worried about the QB.
August 29th, 2019 at 4:11 pm
@ joey
Lies. Andrew luck in 2015 when his defense was ranked 25 in pts and 26 in scoring, the colts missed the playoffs. In 2016 when his defense was ranked 30 in yards and 22 in scoring, the colts missed the playoffs in the weakest division. So no, he too did not carry his team with a poor defense to the playoffs. Plus he had a kicking game. In 2018 his defense was ranked 10 in pts and 11 in scoring. Playoffs. In 2014 his defense was 19 in scoring 11 in yards. Playoffs. In 2013 his defense was ranked 9 in pts and 20 in yards. Playoffs. When has jameis had a defense remotely close to lets say 2013 or 2014 colts. The bucs d has been historically bad. Peception is not reality but again luck is white.
Big ben? Top offenses? The bucs have finished in the top 10 in offense 3 out of the 4 years jameis has been qb. 2 years ago they were 4 in passing yards and #1 last year. Ben’s 1st superbowl he was a game manager throwing maybe 20 times a game with a strong running game bettis, fast willie parker and a defense that ranked 3 in pts and 4 in yards. In the superbowl he was 9-21 for 123 yards and 2 ints. Sure lets give big ben the credit. Thats right, he is white. Fyi…it doesnt change the fact he has the same amount of ints as jameis the last 4 years.
Manning? Did you just pull out career stats? And this is why you make up part of this idiot fan base. I clearly stated that in manning’s 4th year he threw 24 ints. No one had no idea at that time manning would hold all those records. He was still maturing just like jameis. Btw…manning threw 28 ints as a rookie. In jameis 1st 4 years, he has never thrown 20 in a season but again he is white.
At loyal
So let me get this straight, you say luck has 69 total turnovers in his 1st 4 years compared to jameis 76. At that time, luck led the league in turnovers since he had entered the league like winston does now. Are you telling me none of luck’s turnovers were missed opportunities or bad decisions? Gtfooh. Like i said he is white. See above why luck still made the playoffs and jameis hasnt.

And the saga of Jameis Winston continues!
August 29th, 2019 at 7:09 pm
Webster,
Other than “their white” the last post was , imo, your best. It’s quite possible to make a case for winston based on facts and sound reasoning. As is the possibility that someone else using the same facts and solid reasoning to arrive at an opposite opinion from the one you believe.
If there was an overwhelming indisputable history of accomplishments with the stats to support it, then it’s time to question the motives and or character of someone who is unwilling to acknowledge that the arguement has been decided and at least begrudgingly accept it.
That’s not anything resembling the debate as it stands today. Lowering yourself , ie; arguement, by pointing to the most common denominator appeals to the worst parts of a human being. And shows nothing but an emotional disdain for a fellow fan. If you’re better than that, then stop pretending you are not.
Btw, I don’t know with any certainly what the Bucs overall win loss % is when facing the Colts and their respective division. But I believe it’s the teams worst win loss percentage. Is that correct or not?
August 29th, 2019 at 7:10 pm
Auto correct is a tool of the Devil.
August 29th, 2019 at 7:52 pm
Our high priced QB sucks
August 29th, 2019 at 8:21 pm
Webster,
Mannings numbers by his 4TH year were a good indication that his career would be top notch.
Looking at manning years 1 thru 4.
TD’S Passing yards/league ranking
26 and 33. 3739/3,
26 x 3 4135/3,
33 x 1 4413/1
4132/2
This ranked him in order league wise.

Yr 2 / 2nd
Yr3/6th
Yr4/5th

Yr 1 575/1
Yr 2 533/4
Yr 3 571/3
Yr 4 547/6
…….
Games missed….0
All Pro …2 × 1st team.
—-‘————————————————-
Look at those numbers and there’s zero doubt on his being a leading QB.
Pointing out the interceptions is the only comparable and even that’s. ..let’s be honest. …it’s either deliberately deceptive , gross negligence or something. ..in combination, but it’s indicative of too many comments, articles etc..that support his status as being more than the facts support.
If you have to ask someone to close one eye and look at this way at this time a day….you’ll see how good he is..hall of fame career comparables…then that should be all that’s required to torpedo a contortionist’s half azzed attempts to sell you a bag on sh….. Don’t pis on my shoes then tell it’s raining!

D1
First of all, i dont consider you a hill billy floridian. 2nd, jameis rookie year was better than lucks individually on many levels. Jameis completion % was better and he rushed for more tds and threw for less ints yet idiot buc fans said luck was a better qb and jameis threw too many ints. As it relates to manning, jameis qbr last year was very high eventhough he had many mistakes. Manning could have had indicators after his 4th year he would be great, but it was not a certainty because he threw 24 ints in his 4th year and he had the stigma of not being able to win the big game going back to his college days. But we allowed him to mature and for some reason we wont allow jameis to. Jameis 1st 4 years statistically in the league is on par with manning, farve, brees etc so he should get the same benefit of the doubt as you gave manning in his 1st 4 years. You cant tell me a guy who is the 1st qb to throw for 4000 in his 1st 2 seasons without a defense, running game, kicking game, oline does not project at the very least as a very good qb but manning throwing 28 and 24 ints projected greatness then again, manning being white comes into play. Jameis has performed well enough for rhis team to be in the playoffs. I do not listen to national analisis ie max kellerman because they do not watch the bucs. I trust a person like sapp that says if winston was my qb, we would have won 5 superbowls. Why? Because he watch the bucs and he knows jameis is not the problem. It takes a TEAM to win and not a qb playing perfect. FYI…. aaron rodgers played close to perfect the past 2 years and the packers did not make the playoffs. Mariotta had a season where he threw 12 tds and 15 ints while playing 15 games. You can miss me with that bs that winston is the reason the bucs are not in the playoffs

TRIVIA QUESTION:
Who is the only Top-10 Draft Pick NFL QB to get **BENCHED** after being a starter for at least 3 seasons?

@ bucbandit
Getting benched does not mean it was the right call. That could mean you have an idiot coach who coaches for an idiot fan base such as yourself. Again, manning threw 24 ints in his 4th year yet he was not benched because his coach at the time knew it would be IDIOTIC!!!! Obviously you are an IDIOT so you think jameis being benched was the right call. I will let that be your little secret

See what I’ve been saying for literally years? Winston has divided this fan base like no other player in Buccaneer history. That fact is indisputable.
