The Looming Hurricane Mess

August 28th, 2019

It’s on everyone’s mind.

First, Joe hopes all readers living locally and in Florida, even the haters, are taking the smart steps to prepare now for Hurricane Dorian.

Seasoned hurricane watchers know things change in a hurry, but the current storm track has a disaster barreling into Florida as a major hurricane on Sunday night and crossing the state through Monday. If that sticks, there will be massive damage, plus loss of life, and Joe is sick to his stomach.

As for the Bucs, this absolutely sucks. The team is expected to start practicing  — real-game week! — on Monday, with a day off Tuesday and then Wednesday, Thursday and Friday practices. There’s no doubt Team Glazer is finalizing a contingency plan to get the staff and players out of town to prepare for and possibly play the game.

The NFL is sensitive to communities that just endured a storm, which typically leads to widespread power outages and a need for police to be somewhere other than manning a football game. But opening day, Sept. 8 against the 49ers, will be played somewhere.

Joe hopes the storm relocates in whatever direction avoids casualties, and that the Bucs game isn’t relocated to a college stadium in the Carolinas or wherever.

The 49ers’ bye week doesn’t match the Bucs’, so there wouldn’t be any makeup game like there was when opening day of 2017 was cancelled.

Regardless, this looks like a distraction the Bucs will have to overcome.

I remember when Irma was going to kill us all and the the natives, like myself, said it will turn (now if it’s a late Oct storm coming from the Texas side of the gulf, then get worried), you might lose power for a day or two but that’s it. Yet you had all the Yankees loading up their SUV with water and gas and then FLEEING the state with all the water and gas.

Anywho settle down a bit. Even if a forecast that is 5 days out is correct, which is very unlikely, by the time it got to this side of FL it would be a strong tropical storm – just like Jeanne in 2004. This means a lot of trees down, maybe losing power for a day or two, and that’s about it. There is zero reason to go hoard all the water and gas and LEAVE with all the supplies. If you do want to leave, don’t take all the water and gas with you, you dopes.

Anywho the Eurotrash model currently has the storm crossing the state down by Cape Coral, meaning nothing much going on here – and the GFS has it up in Jacksonville, meaning nothing much going on here. We’ll know more early Friday – but generally the safest place to be in the middle of the line 5-days out since that’s never were the storm ends up.

Latest skinny has storm tightening up into one resembling Andrew. Shudder………..:Projected path is So FL. These storms cannot be tied down until 24-32 hours before they hit. Bucs play in Dallas tomorrow night. No telling about the opening game against the 49ers in Tampa. Wherever this sucker hits will be bad. Thoughts to all fellow Floridian But fans..it’s that time of year again.:-(

  6. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

This storm won’t move our game…but you can bet the one following it might. This is why I mentioned when the schedule came out that we might not have the home opening in Tampa. In 2017, the NFL unofficially said they would try to not give us a home opener for the first two games.

So really, they screwed us even worse with this year’s schedule.

Just imagine if we have to play the San Fran game in San Fran. The NFL will have scheduled a really long road trip AND cheated us out of 2 home games (San Fran and London)

  7. SC Bucs Fan Says:

Living in SC storms have cost me a bundle in lost wages and repairs. Stay safe Florida people if it stays on course. We may disagree on all things Bucs in here but I think we agree we all want this to weaken and everyone be safe.

Joe’s been through three earthquakes, a few tornadoes and one hurricane (and countless tropical storms).

Joe will take a hurricane every time.

    Earthquakes: no warning!
Tornado: five minute-warning if you are lucky.
    Hurricane: 3-5 days-warning.

Biggest gripe with hurricanes is it f’s up your football watching.

Bradenton is the sweet spot. Every hurricane misses us. In 2017, I thought it would be the one time we’d get hit, but we only got the parameter of the storm.

I lived in Tampa many, many years. I experienced plenty of hurricanes. So long as you are not in a major flood zone and prepare ahead of time, it’s nothing.

We freeze gallons of tap water to keep our fridge and freezers cold, which also gives us emergency water. We make sure to have food we don’t have to cook, but we also have a camp stove if we need it.

Not a big deal at all. Here in Bradenton we had a wind storm a long while back that was worse than most of them he hurricanes I’ve experienced.

No way is a hurricane worse than a strong earthquake or tornado.

  24. Blogtalkfootball.com Says:

Everyone stay safe! Seems like I come to Florida just in time for the late season hurricanes – I live in Illinois when it isn’t football season. 2years ago I was here just in time to set up my generator. This time, I will get another 5 gallon gas can to keep it running.

  25. Buccfan37 Says:

The Tampa Bay area really has not been hit with a powerful hurricane in nearly a hundred years. We’ve had near misses and weakened storms but not the big one directly. Please let this go elsewhere as this one carries an ominous potential with this area presently centered in the projected strike zone.

  26. webster Says:

    Bonzai

You clearly misunderstood what the nfl said. No way in he11 they said they would try not to give the bucs a home opener due to the possibility of a hurricane. Come on man. Thats nonsense. Bu that logic, the bucs would not have a home game until after november because hurricane season runs until november. And thats not possible.

Beer requires refrigeration! Stock up on liquor! Gravity-fed filtration for a clean water chaser!

  28. BucfaninBorinquen Says:

I lived in the Tampa area for 30 yrs and also dealt with many storms while in FL. Hurricanes never really scared me because they never really hit us hard in the bay area. Then I moved back to my beautiful island (Puerto Rico) about 10 yrs ago. Irma hit us and it really wasn’t that strong. But I was without power for 11 days. I finally got electricity 2 days before Maria hit. Then it was 4 months of desperately searching for gasoline, water and food. Thank God I bought a generator a few days before Irma. I was able to provide one working fridge in my home, and I ran extension cords to my 3 closest neighbors. All four houses stored food in my fridge. FOR FOUR MONTHS. My electricity came back in January. It was the roughest stretch of my life. Lots of sick and elderly died. A huge portion of the population here are still dealing with PTSD because of it. I knew Dorian was nothing to worry about and thank the Creator, she whiffed. Still, I now know the importance of being prepared. Earth is on the fritz. We all need to become pros at this because these storms are stronger and more frequent each year. Good luck to all you Floridians! I’ll be praying for you. (Even you racist fools that support the syphilitic orange bufoon)
