Sifting through blocking mess.
If Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians and his army of assistants are preaching to America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, to start taking care of the ball, it seems the message is getting through.
Of cours,e last night the Bucs offensive line just got worked over by the Browns. Even Joe, who is hesitant to join the parade of torches and blame everything from the Amazon burning down to Chinese tariffs on the offensive line, was horrified at what was witnessed.
It got so bad Joe even Twittered out Arians needs to pull Jameis before he is maimed.
But there was a scramble play by Jameis that Arians believed would have been disastrous prior to this preseason.
“He didn’t fumble,” Arians said of Jameis. “He got hit a couple times. The one time he tried to scramble out of there and got hit from behind, that’s been a fumble in the past. But, he had two hands on the ball.”
Jameis had two hands on the ball. What a novel concept.
Arians was pressed for a more precise eval of Jameis but admitted he really couldn’t due to the circumstances.
“The protection just broke down on him,” Arians said. “So, it’s hard to evaluate him. He was fine as far as I’m concerned.”
After that heinous display by five guys who were supposed to keep Jameis upright, Joe doesn’t know what the hell the Bucs can do short of hiring even more coaches to change this offensive line around between now and the season opener against the 49ers two weeks from tomorrow.
Bucs offensive line coach Joe Gilbert has his work cut out for him.
But at least Jameis didn’t fumble.

The Bucs ran up against a superior defense that the offense obviously could not block. That is going to happen. What I did not see was the adjustments by the OC to respond to the blitz – the same blitz they see in practice everyday. Or the QB, Winston did not execute the adjustments if made. There is fault somewhere. The response should have been better. The fact that there were no turnovers does not make me feel any better, keeps me from feeling any worse. This was the third preseason game. The Bucs first team offense should have played better and it is reasonable for us to expect for them to. Lots of work to do before opening day. Go Bucs!

Jameis is going to get seriously injured this season. That line is just god awful. I am sure reality is setting in now that Licht has set Arians up for failure. No way you can run the ball, pass the ball, or keep your QB healthy when every down is a jail break for the opposing defense. If Jameis does get hurt he probably will be let go. If that happens they need to draft linemen next year and not worry about a QB until that gets fixed. No QB is going to stay up right behind those guys.

@macabee you gotta point If this was a regular season game this is the preseason yes they didn’t made adjustments but I believe they did not wanna show there hand play wise the O line played like s$&@ that’s that but here why I’m not panicking too much BA was pissed just like us and he probably going to go into the o line room a fix this problem no matter what

Coaching can not over come bad talent. Dotson is over the hill, and Cappa has no business being in the NFL. It looks like Cappa was given the job because Licht wasted a 3rd round pick on him. No way this dude earned a starting spot.

Every team we play seems to get the ball out quickly….slants, checkdowns, screens…..
We seem to want to go downfield even on 3rd & 5……
We need an immediate answer for teams that beat our oline and it comes from the playcalling.
We still are too predictable on 1st down and can’t run it up the middle well.
I’m hoping we are saving plays for the regular season.
Jameis is very accurate on short and mid-range passes…..let’s stick to that for the exception of an occasional deep pass.
And, Perriman looks pretty good thus far.

Leftwich and BA are smart guys. I have a feeling they wanted Jameis to air it out downfield to practice hitting BP. In a real game they would have called screens after screen against the Browns rush

I question why Jameis got so little playing time in the pre-season. He is not a ‘top notch’ starting qb. He NEEDS the work to get in tune with the new system. Injury is a risk but is part of the game.

Unfortunately very true macabee. BUT if we expect to be a playoff-caliber TEAM, we’ve got to beat good defenses. No excuses. Last year the Bucs’ offense scored 10 pts against the Bears #1 defense, 3 pts against the Redskins #15 defense, 14 pts against the Saints #14 defense, 12 pts against the Ravens #2 defense and 20 pts against the Cowboys #6 defense. That’s an average of 12 PPG for those 5 losses. We scored a ton of points against average to poor defenses, but our offense simply didn’t show up against the better defenses. That doesn’t get you to the playoffs; it gets you back-to-back 5-11 records.
Everyone and his brother KNEW that our OLine was a weak link on this team coming into this year. So what action did our glorious management take to FIX IT? We paid Donovan more, promoted meh Cappa, and decided to count on a 34-year-old oft-injured RT to complete the quintuplets. Sounds like a plan … for yet another losing season. We’d better HOPE and PRAY that some teams cut some decent OLinemen in another week or so, and that Jason Licht is awake enough to sign them.

Tom Brady is considered by many to be the GOAT. I consider him to be a system QB who makes a living on 10-15 yard passes. But, its effective. When Jameis learns to throw to “Perriman cutting across the field” to get the first down instead of trying to hit the home run when he’s long-ball challenged, he will be a top 10 QB.

The line looked bad but again….there’s little game planning going on in these games. The offense is trying to show as little as possible and the Browns d-line might be the best in the NFL. We were on pace for 10 sacks….I just don’t see that happening with basic adjustments and game planning. We don’t know if Winston was allowed to change much at the line or if they just ran what was called even though it might have been obviously doomed.

The o line was miserable, but I think what you really say was Jameis playing without his two favorite receivers. Evans and Brate, are the guys he is always on the same page with, and he trust they will bail him out. Additionally, I think their presence on the field would have likely tied up an extra safety or linebacker that became blitzers at times. Never underestimate the importance of Mike Evans on this offense.

I think that disfigured finger of Jameis will prevent him from ever being accurate beyond 10 yds. I was watching high school qbs throw better deep balls than him. I just hold out hope any longer. Too much evidence to show he is a bust. We had the wrong year to have the first overall draft pick. We had to choose from two scatter arm qbs

Too funny. Just like Allen Iverson said, practice, you talking about practice. This is preseason, you are talking about preseason. This is where you fix mistakes. I should check the Browns website, because I bet they thought their offense would blow the Bucs out of the water even without OBJ, Chubb etc…
the 53 is not set yet, not worried about the offensive weapons we have, because they will produce, our run game will be better. You will not here out of the mouth of Bruce “I don’t know hw to fix it” – we got 30+ coaches that will get it fixed.

If the Bucs have to “preach” anything to supposed HoF track, high football IQ QB in his 5th year, like “take care of the football” then that’s proof right there Winston not developable. Yes, he didn’t turn over the ball and yet, he got pummeled. Yes, he was 9-19 and made bad decisions as the game progressed and he indicates he is no different that before. In fact, from last preaseon, he’s regressed. What has been his flaws? Bad decisions. Turnovers. Accuracy/deep ball. Two out of those three were clear last night more than once. In fact, while I’ve not looked at the tape yet and was in the stadium, he thew at least one that could easily have been picked off. Yes, it happens. But Winston is inconsistent as always.
And this was the culmination of training camp under all new coaches. Coaches that were brought here to “fix” Winston allegedly. So in the one game that he gets some rope to show how ready he is, how ready his offense it, they all blew it. Talk about a downer going into opening day. Winston and the O line really stunk it up.

NDog…I don’t see anyone blaming Winston for the poor O line play. And I think all Bucs fans worried about getting pummeled. That can’t happen. This team had many problems that are not resolved. It is not “either” or “or.” The O line for pass protection looks to be tops there but Winston’s other issues than TOs (decionmaking and accuracy/deep ball) were also prominent and right up there. Just as I’d worried, take away ME and Hump and he’s going to struggle. Those two guys smooth over Winston’s problems.
On a positive note, for this dress rehearsal, the run game and D are very much improved, and the kicking game looks to be better. It is nice to win close games with a kick at the end rather than lose them.

Outlook: Bucs do short-term crisis management for the O line by dumpster diving over the next two weeks as other players get released. Over next four months. Bucs keep one eye on QBs at the college level. Offseason: Their rebuild effort is already underway with the DBs and LBs. It is looking much better. Receivers look pretty well set to, with RB showing flash. NFL draft priorities for 2020: QB, OL, DL. FA for 2020: Plenty of cash coming open with Winston being let go.
The above can change, but THIS is the path they’ve been on, which is why Winston isn’t under contract in his fifth year.
4-12. Fewer wins if Winston gets injured.

I love the overreactions to the preseason.
Here’s what I will take away:
Jameis was probably under the most pressure he’s ever been in during a game. And the kicking game failed him in the first half per usual. BUT.,.
No turnovers. The Bucs didn’t give the browns anything and the defense kept it close which allowed a chance in the second half.
That’s not something we’ve seen over the past few years. There will be a game or two like this during the season. Let’s hope the Bucs saw that they can squeeze out a W with zero turnovers and solid D.

Just another sky is falling day in the comments section no need to be surprised. Bobo is correct screens would have slowed down the pass rush but I think it was smart to watch the o line get whipped in order to evaluate why it happened. Stop thinking like it is a regular season game because coaches don’t. Everyone is trying to sound so knowledgeable about what this team is or what the coach and gm should do. It’s called preseason for a reason and that reason is to get ready for the games that count not entertain fans and media. Reason glad they looked horrible so moves can be made. Demar and smith suck but they decided those were their guys so they’ll love with it but Betty they won’t next year. Next year will see a revamp of the o line unless we are looking for a quarterback too

@Tony LA. I think the context is where many will differ with you. First, agreed, this is just a preseason game and given Winston’s inconsistency in the past, hopefully it is not what we see going forward. Yes, he’s under a lot of pressure and his O line has to protect him. But they will also be playing other teams with good pass rushes, and it’s unsettling with BA saying he likes who he’s got. Now, supposedly this coaching staff was brought in specifically to fix Winston. The fact he did not turn the ball over last night in the first two real quarters we’ve seen is not so much to be commended but to be what has always been expected, espeicially now. Since the day the “QB whisperer” showed up and started driving around the practice fields, months ago, it has been all about Winston and how they were addressing his issues. Earlier this week, we got some odd mixed signals from BA and from BL that ran quite the range. Joe reported on that.
And so here we are: Last night was the culmination of that. Consider it the “playoff game” of the Preseason if you will, where we see who they are, how ready they are to start etching performance where it counts and impacts. This failure of the evaluation was both a group effort and individual effort. It is nothing new to Bucs fans in pre-season where the offense had trouble protecting the QB and going down the field. Yes, they probably didn’t show us all they had. But neither does anyone else, and neither does the opponents.
As a Bucs fan, I hope this was more abberation and it is fixed. But given the history, the O looked like same stuff, same players, different coaches. Same bad performance when they needed it to be good.

Perceptions:
1) Bucs defense played quite well overall.
2) Baker Mayfield played even WORSE than Jameis Winston.
3) At the whiteboard, Jameis Winston has an incredible football IQ.
My Reality:
1) Perhaps, the Bucs defense would have a slightly harder time covering OBJ, Jarvis Landry, and Njoku than all of the 2nd stringers who played yesterday.
2) Who knows, perhaps Mayfield would have hit those 1st stringers, if they were more open.
3) In live action, Jameis LOCKS IN on his primary receiver (his head never moves), and he doesn’t look for his checkdown receiver, nor see other receivers who may be open, including underneath defenders who can sometimes jump a route.
Perhaps the Bucs should go to “max protect” while sending out a single receiver, and a checkdown, which would limit the choices to two every play. When Evans and Brate return, that should also help.

The apologists continue to try to put lipstick on a pig. They continue to deny the writing the wall. They ignore the indicators because it doesn’t fit their narrative and understanble wish that all is well in Winstonville.
Unfortuneatly, here is the shaping of the national (and probably local) narrative we’ll have to endure over the next two weeks. It will be painful because most know it is probably accurate:
“The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have showed some great improvement in the defense over the offseason under new coordinator Todd Bowles and focus on the defensive back positions during the draft. They are getting pressure on the opposing QB and the pass rush is much improved with Suh joining the squd, even with Jason Pierre-Paul out and Gerald McCoy no longer with the team. But surprisingly, the passing offense is of great concern, with fifth year QB and first overall pick in the 2015 Jameis Winston continuing to stuggle with accuracy, consistency, and decision making. It looks like he’s taking better care of the football so far, but will that be enough to get him a new contract and get his team out of the NFC South cellar? The Bucs offensive line certainly is no help and looks to have had Winston running for his life in the first full look of the preseason. While he continues to show problems from the past, the capability to back him up if he is injured is at best, an unknown. On a positive note for the offense, the running game looks much improved with Ronald Jones showing some flash. And they are clearly deep at the receiver positions, especially tight end, and may have fixed their historically horrid kicking game. But already ranked in the bottom 5 of the NFL teams, this does not look to be a very promising season for the Pewter Pirates, who may be in the hunt for a QB next year and a rebuild by the time this season is over. Their schedule is, in a word, brutal. Time will tell.”
This IS what we’ll hear. And rightfully so. The Bucs O could have avoided it last night by showing some competence on the first team. They could not.
This is will make fans want to run out and just buy up the tickets. Yeah, Winston is moving the needle.

Entering 5 years in the pros as a big money quarterback and the best news is that he had two hands on the ball and didn’t cough it up. Help!! This is not good news. Jameis still looks like a deer in the headlights with the ball in his hands. The swiss cheese line in front of him certainly didn’t do their jobs. Frankly, Ryan Griffin looked cooler, calmer, and more like a leader last night.

Browns have a great DLine – 38 sacks last year. Good pre season experience for OLine, especially Cappa.
The Defense played great without 4 starters
No turnovers, and they won the game.
Jameis had receivers open underneath- needs improvement.

Oh man…
Jameis Winston must have more EXCUSES to defend him than any QB in history…
So many on this site right now… “He didn’t have any protection! The Browns are too good!”
Umm… okay. What about all those other games… FOR. FOUR. YEARS.
He’s been making these same mistakes (bad deep balls, accuracy issues, terrible footwork) his entire career.
Jameis is NOT that improved at all. He does not look sharp. His footwork has not improved. He so often looks LOST out there, even when the protection is decent.
i’ve said it a million times… Winson doesn’t pass the “Eye Test”… watching him play it just seems inevitable a bad play is coming at any moment. He’s just so UNCOMFORTABLE when he has the ball, and, yes, he’s super uncomfortable and not poised even when the protection is decent.
Stop making excuses for this guy and recognize that he’s just not getting any better to fix his issues after 4 seasons and 5 training camps in the NFL.
The odds are high that he’s just never going to be a great NFL QB. If he doesn’t miraculously play like a different QB this year then the Bucs need to move on and save the cap money and look to develop/sign a different QB. You can’t pay $30M/year for mediocrity.

Observations and thoughts from last night:
1) not worried about Gay missing that kick last night from 37 yards (even though that range in the right hash is his “bugaboo”). In this instance he was playing the right to left wind and his leg is so powerful he doesn’t need to play the wind as much as other kickers, especially from that distance. He still hit it well and it wasn’t a complete miss kick. I’m proud he cane back and hit the game winner, no problem (2 game winners in two weeks).
2) I am worried about the starting O-Line. I wasn’t the first 2 weeks (excluding a few missed assignments and turning guys free, but that’s correctable). Getting your ass beat one-on-one repeatedly all across the board is concerning. Gonna have to have above average special teams and a solid run game, of which to play action off of to buy time to throw the ball, to have any success on offense this year. Need Mike Evans to stay healthy too. Those will all be paramount to establishing any offense this year, especially as they learn and grasp this new offense and get acclimated and accustomed to it.
3) I think Byron Leftwich has loads of potential and I trust BA’s judgement. I just wonder if currently BL is a little too inexperienced and lacks some maturity and experience that comes with age. That is going to be a growing process. It’s BA’s offense, but to think there’s no difference or it doesn’t matter or effect the offense when BL is calling plays as opposed to BA, you’re out of your mind. It just is. I wonder if BA calling plays in the Dallas game is BA realizing this or if he really is calling plays this Thursday so “BL can get ready for San Fran in week one…
4) I’m proud of the defense. The defense is definitely more of a strength of our team compared to our offense at this current moment (did I really just say that?). They played great this week (and last week) and without arguably our 3 best defenders in Vea, JPP and David. Suh looked great last night too and so did the secondary (did I just say that too?). I have much more confidence in our defense and Todd Bowles than I do our offense, offensive line and Byron Leftwich currently. My, what a difference a year can make.
4) Even with the bad offensive line play, I thought RoJo ran the ball well considering. And at times our run game looks effective. Dare Ogunbowale is the 3rd string RB and probably our best 3rd down back. He runs great routes, can catch the ball and is good in pass protection. Still had a ways to go improving, but I like where he is at and think he deserves the 3rd down back role in some situations. That block he had in pass protection on the Jordan Leggett TD was beautiful to watch.
5) Whitehead deserves to be a starting Safety currently. He impressed me all preseason. Might not be a bad safety group if Mike Edwards can show up and stay healthy and if Justin Evans can get healthy as well. I think Darrian Stewart (once he learns the defense and gets more comfortable) will be decent depth. But of the available safeties who played and aren’t injured, Whitehead is by far the best of that group. He deserves to start at one of the 2 Safety positions.
6) Griffin deserves to make this team. He won’t make it the practice squad (yes, he is still eligible) if you waive him. He will get picked up guaranteed.
7) Tanner Hudson also deserves a spot. Especially mueller with Brate being out injured and Antony Auclair getting injured last night too. And I think you have to keep 5 ILB as Cichy deserves a roster spot. That guy has potential. Go back and watch the Wisconsin game against USC in the bowl game. He just has to stay healthy. But you have to keep 5 at that spot. David, Bucannon, Minter, White and Cichy. I think you at least keep him for the first 4 games (for special teams alone and solid depth) while Ryan Smith serves his 4 game suspension and reevaluate then.
I’ll stop there!
p.s. “Nacho” deserves some playing time. And we made what some consider to be the most exciting young quarterback in the game in Baker Mayfield look very unexciting and bad. He was like 10 of 26 in completions (without JPP, Vea and David). Bowles is a blessing! We held the Browns to under 150 TOTAL yards.

– The coaches were just testing him; in a real game that would not have happened.
– Those other guys were just too darn good.
– C’mon, at least he didn’t turn the ball over.
– Jameis is fine; he just needs to get his vision checked.

But given all my grief and parody on Winston…here’s the deal. I hope they sort this out before SF comes to town. Knowing Winston is inconsistent and that he will spend the next two weeks thinking about how bad he sucks sometimes, he will come out against SF and get 300 yds, two TDs, two INTs. The D will be improved and the kicks will be made. They will play just well enough to win.
And four days later, given the history, the trends. We will see an ugly night in CAR. He will stink it up again.
The apologists need to stop kissing his azz and demand more. Bust his chops a little bit. It’s okay. You can still be fans!

Bottom line anyone that watched the game last night and blames anything that happened on anyone other than the oline is flat crazy or clueless. I vote they are clueless as no one could perform under those conditions. Ask yourself this how where his passed before getting destroy in seconds on 3 out of 5 plays? First throw to Godwin perfect, deep shot to Perriman perfect, which you all ignore BTW, a throw away on screen that wasn’t there. THEN he was running for his life and yes that effected his accuracy cause the clock in your head speeds up you lose mechanics and timing but yep that’s all his fault. Man you people are STUPID!!!!!! PERIOD BOTTOM LINE END OF STORY.

@JGHoti86. I agree on Hudson and mostly the rest. I think Auclair and even Brate just become trait bait for anothe another team lacking at TE. Hudson needs to stay. Maybe they can use the cap space to sign or otherwise pick up some other OL players in trade, or draft picks next year.

NDog – it’s not about the entire game (or when he played). There were definitely times when the O-Line let him down and no QB could have don much better. BUT… so many of the other plays when he did have some time he performed poorly.

I clearly stated he was not accurate BUT there is a clear difference in his throws before getting assulted and after and if dont think that getting hit in less than 2 seconds on many plays effects you then you clearly don’t understand football. Each play is not mutually exclusive, if you get hit time and time again in seconds guess what you start to hurry, you can’t do what you normally do so yes it effects your play. How is this not obvious?
Again these are not excuses these are facts.

That’s what’s funny about the Apologists. It’s pretty clear Winston has issues…that are being (perhaps insufficienly) addressed, but they attack attack attack and denigrate those who point this out. Making it about THEM instead of the issue. Those they attack have some anecdotal syndrome, call folks clueless, racists, idiots, mentally messed, etc. Quite fun frankly. But it’s an old Marxist tactic to try to destroy your opponent publicly by isolating him, tryin to make him look bad so that your positoin is somehow elevated so that the people will see. Man I will be glad when Jamies leave this team!!!! I’m so tired of this trash fan base. I know some of the people on this site his race plays a part of it . Now when Elie played bad for 8 years it was his o line. When Luck played bad it was his o line as well. Jamies o line plays bad it’s Jamies fault. He is in a lose lose position on this trash fan base. I’m glad he’s getting his money this year regardless how all yall feel he will be a rich man. And he can go play baseball if a team don’t pick him up. Losing GMC better not come back to bite Bucs. Suh played dirty on the out of bounds hit he made. He’s had a dirty player rep on him since he has played in the NFL. He will have to do more to impress me. Secondary played outstanding–Whitehead will be All Pro probably after this season. Holding a decent offense with great field position to FGs means great defensive play–PERIOD!

If we have the 2002 Bucs defense, then sure, be a boring game manager.
But we don’t, and Winston isn’t here to do a Mike Glennon impression.
You people who are so scared of making plays, you’re just bores. Like last night on 3rd and 10, all these dummies are saying why doesn’t Winston throw underneath to Perriman who would have got 4 yards. Well, because Perriman would have gotten 4 yards, which would not have gotten a first down.
This loser mentality where you’re so afraid of messing up that you fail to make plays, that’s what you do when you have a top tier defense. Now, if the Bucs magically go from one of the worst defenses ever to a top 5 defense, then again, sure, play it safe. But Drew Brees and Matt Ryan are a lot better than overhyped Mayfield, and the defense will be giving up huge points. To stay in those games, you’re going to have to not be a coward and you’re going to have to make plays.
But I know you’re scared, you’d rather lose 31-3 than 38-31, that’s the agenda you dullards are pushing.
