Cam Newton Hurts Foot

How bad? Week 2 opponent.
In less than three weeks the Bucs will travel to Charlotte to face the Stinking Panthers in a Week 2 Thursday Night Football NFC South showdown. And after last night, Joe has to wonder if pouty Cam Newton will be at full strength.
In one of those worthless Thursday preseason games, with the Stinking Panthers playing the Belicheats, Newton hurt his left ankle while being sacked and left the game. Per Max Henson of Panthers.com, Newton was in obvious pain on the sideline and was emotional.
Newton later was escorted into the Stinkin’ Panthers locker room by medical personnel. Long-time Panthers beat guy Joe Person of The Athletic noted in the third quarter that Newton was not on the sidelines.
Henson also pointed out the injured foot is the same one Newton had surgery on in 2014. Person also reported Newton was in a boot. after the game. Preliminary reports are a sprain with further tests scheduled later today.
(Column rant: It is beyond Joe’s comprehension why owners allow these disgusting preseason games. Most NFL owners are, by nature, businessmen, right? So why would you allow, purposely allow, valuable assets you have sunk tens or hundreds of millions of dollars into to be placed at high risk of being damaged or lost for good? It just doesn’t make a lick of sense to Joe. Never has.)
Three prominent NFL head coaches, Bucco Bruce Arians, Doug Pederson and Sean McVay, have said in the past 48 hours how either joint practices with another team are more valuable than preseason games, or they came right out and said preseason games are not worth the risk to starters.

Joe these pre season games mean a lot to drafted players and undrafted free agents , walk ons , I say cut it down to 2 games add 2 games to the regular season

Injuries can happen in practice or in games. I’m totally for going to a 2/18 schedule instead of 4/16 – but blaming injuries on the preseason is nonsense. Guys get hurt in practice much more often and if you didn’t have preseason games at all, more guys would get hurt since you’d be going from 0-100 with no zero prep. Sure, some guys can do that, like RB’s and QB’s and some veterans – but does anyone want an o-line that hasn’t played together going out day 1 with no time in a game at all? That would get more guys hurt.

Sure. Practice (unless you are Lawrence Taylor or Barry Sanders) and games are necessary.
Preseason games are not.

This maybe a cautionary tale for BA to not want to expose Jameis to unnecessary injury in a meaningless game. Maybe they should protect all QB’s with a “hands off” rule during the preseason. Imagine how River Ron & Co. are feeling right now? Especially after their excitement they finally got him back.
But on the other hand, unfortunately, Jameis needs these real time game reps, especially since they don’t count. I’d rather he workout the kinks now instead of using the first several games of the season.

What do people actually care about in football? It’s about seeing big highlight plays and sportsmanship. In practice the refs will call plays dead, we can all just watch and know how it should end, so we should just remove all hitting from the game and go to powderpuff rules. Also this would let women play, and women are the biggest growth market for the NFL! Well that Asia, where men are the size of our women – so they could even play. It’s a win-win for everyone!

Joe – I just disagree with you. I don’t think you need 4 games anymore, but you do need some, and if we had none I strongly believe you’d end up with more injuries, sort of how guys will tell you there’s been more injuries since the players started practicing less after the last CBA.
I mean I could be wrong but it’s not like we’re ever going to find out.

Anybody see Josh Allen balling against the Dolphins? Their offensive line isn’t very good, but he was everywhere. I hope Devin White shows up soon. I remember leading up to the draft, I wanted Josh Allen badly, but was thinking we would never get a chance to pick him. And then we passed on him. Oh well, hope it’s not another setback for us.

i watched mccoy all first half and he did absolutely nothing…he was literally dead weight on the field…he looks totally washed up…they go right at him and he always loses the battle…the tape doesn’t lie…i saw at least a dozen plays with him…he was insignificant or lost the play on every one of them

I saw allen balling and like you, and i wanted him too. I also wanted derwin james. I also wanted sheldon rankins over hargreaves. At the same time, i wanted mike evans over donald, i wanted winston over mariotta, i wanted oj howard over dalvin cook. My point is you may not always get what you want, but you gotta trust that devin will hold his own as well. Devin white loves football, he studies film and he seeks out knowledge ie derrick brooks and luke kueckly. We will not know if the bucs were wrong for this pick for atleast 3 years. Some say the buc fans say the bucs were wrong for picking mike evans over donald. I say evans is a top 5 receiver so you couldnt go wrong.

The NFLPA and Owners need to get some common ground here if they want to preserve their assets. More scrimmages, fewer games. The fans will likely see less and less of their starters in preseason as time goes on. I realize the NFLPA is trying to level the playing field some so more players get a shot and hang around longer…but this a good example of why something needs to give.

You ask why they allow assets to play in preseason games…they know that the American public will support their teams regardless if the ‘asset’ is there or not. The NFL is such a part of our culture that the owners will get their money regardless of who is on the field. Ever hear of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers?

Why do we always have to mess with success? The NFL is very successful. Leave it alone and quit changing things. There have been way too many changes lately. 4 preseason games is fine. It works. Leave It alone. New coaches, new players need this time. The games are dress rehearsals for the finished product we are about to see. We are being impatient. It happens every year. It’s the wait that gets us excited.

I have to disagree. Nothing is the same as live game action for rookies. Remember when the bucs MAN HANDLED the jags in joint practices?
Yeah, the Jags mopped the floor with the Bucs that same season….compeltey embarrasses them..I couldn’t disagree more. Other than.injury probe players, and seasoned vets, these guys need the reps.

This conversation takes place every year, in every NFL city. A guy gets hurt…”why?” I’m in the same camp as most, I think it should be shortened. The reason for my despise however, is that these games are of inferior quality. Yet, the ticket prices remain the same.
Sure, it’s nice to see guys battle that have virtually no shot. Sometimes, you even have a guy emerge. But why, WHY would you make people pay regular season prices for preseason garbage?!

we need to take note of the appropriate rant–keep our players in less than a half by far sweet to see cam newton sacked twice in such a short time good stuff sometimes I like to see other teams lose or get hurt more than watching the Bucs play.

And, I also watched GMC…..was totally ineffective….
As far as pre-season……the Player’s Assn is reluctant to go to an 18 game season……the NFL would have to add to the cap and add players to the roster to accomplish that.
Another idea would be to go to 3 preseason games and start the season 1 week earlier and have an extra week of wild card playoffs to expand the number of wild card teams.

But yeah, for once I would love to see the Bucs bury a backup instead of allowing him to be the NFL offensive player of the ****ing week but Thursday night on the road usually means a long night for the Bucs D even if its against a rookie or a washed up has-been QB……….

2 pre season games. 2 weeks of Joint Practices with another team including a live scrimmage in the stadium and make it a Fan Fest. Owners can make money on Concessions and Parking. Problem is TV. So will need to replace that cash with something.

I would give up all preseason games for 4 additional regular season games. That would push the draft away from my anniversary!
But seriously, the solution is simple…make preseason free and don’t play the starters. That was players who are trying to make the team are the only ones who play.

PS has *always* been a cash cow for the owners. They do not pay the 47% of revenue to players. Players are paid for 16 games + pro-rata for playoffs, but not PS.
So there better be some magic $$$ solution to get owners to agree to fewer PS games.
Dropping 2 PS and adding 2 regular-season games causes a decrease in owners net $$$.
