In the eyes of a former Bucs player, if America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, scrambles one more time in preseason, Bucco Bruce Arians needs to bench him until the regular-season opener two weeks from Sunday.
Last week former Bucs guard and current popular local sports radio personality Ian Beckles watched as Blaine Gabbert and Ryan Griffin largely lumbered through the second preseason game of the summer. And Beckles was horrified.
As a result, Beckles believes Jameis may be the most valuable player on the Bucs and if Jameis gets hurt and is out for the year, the entire 2019 season is toast.
“If Jameis gets hurt we win two games this year with what we got, OK?” Beckles said. “Jameis has to learn to get down. If you are scrambling in a preseaosn game — there is no reason for you to take a hit. None! Zero. I don’t give a rat’s [arse].
“We have to start treating Jameis Winston like Peyton Manning because that is how valuable he is to this football team. Don’t think so? Go ahead and put Gabbert or Griffin out there. Go ahead and try.
“Throw the ball away! Don’t take a lick. Don’t do it!”
Regular readers know what Joe thinks about preseason games. People mocked former Bucs coach Dirk Koetter for what they believed was babying players in training camp and sitting so many out in preseason. Well, that tactic is catching on around the NFL.
And you know what? Koetter was 3-0 in season-opening games as Bucs head coach.
After seeing pouty Cam Newton go down last night, Joe sure hopes Bucco Bruce Arians has a change of heart and sits Jameis tonight. Joe understands that is unlikely to happen but Arians did say if the offense is crisp he will pull them early.
Please, let the offense be sharp.

Rare good advice from Beckles. Probably already pretty obvious to most people through. The stakes are higher for Winston though. If he gets hurt and goes on IR, good chance the Bucs press with not bringing him back. So gotta keep him healthy so the Bucs have best chance to win this year and so they can see what they need to for the whole season, and go from there.
If they lose him, and he goes on IR, and win two games…well. That also means they’d draft higher next year.
Bottom line is no Bucs fan roots for their team to lose, ever.

This Buc fan wants his cake and to eat it too. I want healthy Jameis and I want to see him hit a deep ball in stride tonight.
I want to compare a year two Baker Mayfield’s arm talent/decision making/execution/hitting guys in stride to a year five Jameis Winston.
I can’t wait, want to see JW3 hit perriman in stride! I want to see receivers getting the ball with an opportunity for YAC. I believe in Jameis and I am looking for those things tonight because that’s what number one overall picks are supposed to be: game changers.

Jameis needs to start thinking like Peyton Manning……It’s not the coaching or even being in the games that is the problem…..It is how Jameis thinks….he will take the risks of injury because that is exactly who he is and how he thinks.

Honestly, as much as I want to see him play, I wouldn’t be upset at all if he didn’t play another snap this preseason…
Whether you love him or hate him he is the most important player on this team…If he was to get hurt and not get re-signed he should consider it a blessing; run and don’t look back Jameis, get the heck out of Tampa…Too many people in this fanbase are clueless; the hate for him is real…

instead of “pretending” that he is manning, or all the effort to “change his thinking” or fairy tales of him finally connecting on deep ball throws, would it not just be easier to draft a new QB and save the extra 25 million for other area’s of the poor roster!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hopefully we see the first team O put 17-21 points on the board in the first half. Protect Winston, black well. D needs hold them to 10 or less I first half. Good run game, few penalties, few to no Buc turnovers. This game sets the tone for the SF game. Will fans be energized and feel ready, or be bummed out? They need to create a buzz….wayyyyyyy too many unsold tickets for that first game.

I cannot imagine any stretch of Gabbert. I expect when the final depth chart comes out week from Tuesday it will Griffin sitting at #2 behind Winston. Gil Brandt writes on NFL.com the Bucs have one of the least enviable QB rooms in the NFL. Starter with major issues to overcome (turnovers and decision making) and not really any solid depth behind him.

If any starting QB goes down for their team the season is pretty much toast. Brady played last night, he goes down their season is over, yet he played. This is a new offense for Jameis, and the team, they have to get some work together. What needs to change is the number of preseason games. Add one regular season game, only two preseason games. Expand the number of players on the practice squads so you can develop talent, and let all 53 dress on game day instead of 46. That would lessen the risk of hurt players having to stay in games. The league talks about player safety, but doesn’t practice what they preach.

TDTB what is the desire for Kaepernick? As a NFL QB who has never thrown for more than 3500 yards in a season. Yes he has a good TD to Int ratio. But in his six NFL season he has only thrown for 12,000 yards. I do admire his stand(kneeling) on social issues we both find atrocious. I am just not as thrilled about his lack of passing yards. And at 31 I doubt he will be able to improve on that. I wish him the best, just not on our team. Plus he might shadow the franchise’s fragile ego and make him worry someone else may step into the starters position and take it from him. How blasphemous!!!!

We have no back up to Jameis. I dont think he will be any different this season, but hes by far the best we have right now. I would bench him all year, go 0-16 then let our new GM draft a franchise QB. (I can dream)

The Buccaneers have treated Jameis like Peyton Manning. Every decision when it comes to coaching and players have been made for the benefit of #3. If he fails, then the Buccaneers can walk away know they, quite literally, did everything they could to help him succeed.

Steve K , Yes great comparison night with Baker and Jameis , however as I’ve written before Baker s struggles are ahead when defenses start to figure out his limitations. Just Watch !!!

Realist no they cant just draft a quarterback in case you didnt know the draft is over for 2019. No one on this site takes shots at Dirk because of how good his passing offense ranked. Pathetic considering that’s just a little piece of the puzzle, everything else about this coach was awful which is why Todd monken was better at calling plays.
Winston does have to be protected, I know many people on this site doesn’t want to believe he is the key to this season the that would be the delusional few who know nothing about football.

I was sitting in my seat last Friday watching Winston run for the sidelines… and then I saw what Gabbert and Griffin did on the field and I remarked that we are sunk if Jameis goes down. SUNK.

D-Rome makes a GREAT point……EVERYTHING the Bucs have done with their coaching, and much of their FA acquisitions has been to accommodate and “fix” Winston. The term “coach killer” comes back into view.

Beckles is spot on.
Gabbert is absolutely horrendous. We’d be better of just putting another RB or WR on the field and doing a wildcat if Jameis goes down.
I’d honestly rather see what Griffin could do in a real game than play Gabbert. He is straight trash.

Beckles is a fake news bore, and how anyone can listen to this wantabe “shock jock” and take it seriously is beyond me. The guy is clueless about the team, just runs his mouth with his “hot” takes, then runs his mouth some more. This used to be such a great and strong radio market, now it’s down to hacks like this filling in the 22 mins an hour of talk around the 38 mins of commercials.

Weapons for Winston is a false narrative. There have been virtually zero accommodations for Winston. They even drafted Mike Evans BEFORE Winston. The only guys they spent high picks on were OJ and RoJo. Neither one has pulled his weight to help Winston. Marpet has been pretty good but Donnie is a below average LT. More fake news propaganda by the WDS simpletons.
