Beckles: Teams Asking Jason Licht For Benenoch

Speaking on his podcast “In the Trenches,” former Bucs guard and current popular sports radio personality Ian Beckles claims teams have offered the Bucs draft picks for turnstile reserve offensive lineman Caleb Benenoch.
And just who is dropping this information in Beckles’ lap? None other than Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht.
Beckles recounted a recent conversation he had with Licht at One Buc Palace and Beckles said the conversation turned to the offensive line. Both agreed the starting-five appears to be ahead of last year’s outfit.
Beckles said he told Licht that the backups are, well, less than ideal. Beckles said Licht told him teams have called him offering draft picks for Benenoch.
“Jason Licht told me he has teams calling him offering draft picks for Caleb Benenoch,” Beckles said in almost disbelief. “Ew! There must be a shortage — if you are going to pass up draft picks for Caleb Benenoch, who was the worst offensive lineman on the worst offensive line last year, then there is not much going on out there.”
Now hold up! Joe is aware of frustrating readers because Joe doesn’t play along with the predictable, parroted narrative the Bucs had the worst offensive line in the century-old NFL. The Bucs, in case you are unaware, led the NFL in passing yards last year. Led the NFL!
To hear some wail about the offensive line, if it was truly this terrible, then how the hell were Bucs quarterbacks able to stand upright long enough to throw passes much less lead the NFL in passing?
Joe honestly believes Benenoch has actually grown worse, if you can imagine. So if Licht was offered draft picks for Benenoch, Joe’s question is, why is Benenoch still here?
Twice already in training camp, Bucco Bruce Arians groused about how the team was not developing young tackles. Well, Benenoch is a young tackle. And someone offered draft picks for him and he’s still here?

He’s young, he’s cheap, has NFL starting experience. The guy played a bunch of games at Tackle a few years back for us and looked good. I doubt he just forgot how to play. He wasn’t good and didn’t want to play at Guard. It’s either taking time for him to adjust to the new system and position or he’s playing through an injury.
As for the shortage of decent OL players in the NFL all teams are struggling to find some quality depth. We’ve been hearing for 10+ years that the spread offense run by most colleges is limiting the pool of prostyle linemen in the draft.

Only two possibilities: 1) it’s made up to make it appear that Licht’s draft pick is desirable; or 2) it’s true and Licht is a fool for not accepting the trade offer(s). Either way, Licht sucks.

Didn’t hear Beckles’ interview with Licht, but wonder if he asked him the obvious follow-up question: “What were they offering and why didn’t you take it Jason?”
Benenoch was a FIFTH ROUND PICK back in 2016. He had a very impressive 3-years at UCLA … 35 consecutive starts, all but 4 of them at tackle (interesting because coming out of HS in Texas he was ranked the #17-#22 offensive GUARD in the nation). And yes, in college his overall performance was very good.
Sometimes wonder if Caleb’s just one of those OLinemen who take 3-4 years to really come into their own & win a starting spot. Coaching (or lack of it) has probably been a huge factor in his development (or lack of it). Regardless, this is his 4th year with the Bucs, and he likely won’t be offered a second contract unless he shows some real development this year. Personally I’d be focusing on using him entirely at Right Tackle to see if he’s a viable replacement for Demar Dotson next year.

What really happens with players like this is their natural talent makes them kings in high school and even in college. There is very little they need to do to dominate at their position. The Pro game is a different animal all together. Every player you go against is at least good and most are great. So much work is involved being good in the pro game that a lot of these guys can’t or don’t want to put the time and effort in. I hate the word but lazy comes to mind when I watch some of these guys.

If someone offers Licht ANY draft pick for the turnstile Benenoch, he should accept it immediately. Getting a 7th round pick would be an absolute steal.
If Licht has offers on the table and doesn’t pull the trigger, he should be fired.
My guess is, either Beckles or Licht is lying.

Does ANYONE know a tech loophole to screen mirror or cast NFL Game Pass games to your digital TV? All I get is sound. Ticks me off. I have this big, beautiful TV and I can’t see the damned games. I have Apple TV too, as an FYI. I’ve tried downloading the NFL app to my TV but it won’t let me watch the games like on my iPhone. So if there’s anyone out there with a solve, I’d be grateful for some insight. Danke.

Bucs Oline last year was average… not the worst. Not sure I believe any team would give up a draft pick… except a conditional 7th if he makes their team. If teams are calling, its not bc Caleb is good, its because they know he’s getting cut.

The league has declined in quality of players since 06 or so once the CTE stuff came out as well as waning interest overall. Less and less people playing the game. The kids are getting smarter.

@Diggler- don’t believe the hype. Football is by FAR the most popular sport in the USA. It’s not even close. CTE is real, crappy rule changes are real, it doesn’t matter. Friday nights across the country are full of high school games, colleges are making money hand over fist on Saturdays , and the casinos, fantasy football, and tv contracts continue to grow. Sorry, I’ve been good at football forever, i think i’m just gonna play marching band now from now on… don’t think so. There’s more people playing football than there was 20 years ago, 40, 60, etc. This is just a simple fact that the population of the US is constantly exploding in population size.

benonoch is bad imo hes better at rt then he is at guard granted i havent watched any practice of him other then the preseason games first game was horrible second one wasnt so bad (what i actually watched). the guy who is truly awful is cole boozer he might be one of the worst ots ive ever seen. im surprised hes still on the roster. i liked whated that holcombe guy did the first game he should be our backup lt. god help us if cole boozer actually sees the field then the real donovan smith haters can see what terrible lt play looks like.

The difference between the coaching staff under Bruce Arians and both Dirk Koetter and Lovie Smith is night and day. All of BA’s guys are teachers. Coaching them up is what these folks are all about. Everything has been structured to maximize their number of reps and to give each individual quick feedback all of the time.
These methods will separate the wheat from the shaft and help elevate all on the roster from top to bottom. I suspect this approach tells us why Arians was so confident he could turn this franchise around quickly and “retool not rebuild”.

In my years of watching football, the closest thing that I can equate offensive line play to is your significant other. Sometimes they’re in the mood and sometimes they’re not. I’ve seen supposedly unstoppable offensive lines get manhandled and purportedly trash offensive lines dominate.
It’s a very fickle position group and while talent matters, desire is pretty important as well.

O line was not the worst last year
Beckles is wrong, like usual unless it comes to food suggestions
Bucs o line was awful in run blocking, which shouldn’t be the case when you have the 2nd highest paid group in the league
Pass blocking is their strength and they did that well all year in 2018
The proof is in the passing yards and the average time both Fitz and JW has to pass

OL depth will just get worse at all levels of football.
IMO, one reason the trend in college is toward spread offenses is BECAUSE of lack of development on OL. OL is arguably the most difficult position to play outside QB. If teams could grind it out on the ground, eating up clock, they would do so. But grinding OLinemen take time to develop, a lot of head-knocking in full pads.

The run blocking was putrid (league-worst, according to PFO). Pass blocking was just about league average last season, though. And in an offense that averaged the most air yards per target…meaning our QB’s typically needed longer to throw. That said, Benenoch was a huge reason for how awful the run blocking was. But something tells me this is more a tactic to garner interest around the league. Doubt we’ve been offered any real compensation for him…but wouldn’t be surprised if we’re open to it if someone sees these comments and decides to put in an offer of their own.

Agreed with cobra here. The trend in HS and college with lineman development is hurting the play at the pro level. Not going to say that’s the whole story with Benenoch, he’s just flat out not a good player. That said…if Licht can get a 7th and a PB&J sammie, pull it
