“I Got A Feel For That At The Game”
August 20th, 2019More head coaches continue to turn their noses at preseason football and have their starters watch the game from the sidelines.
Bucco Bruce Arians isn’t in that camp.
Yesterday at One Buc Palace, Arians said the Browns will be a good test for his team.
ProFootballTalk.com noted today that a dozen starting quarterbacks have yet to play in this preseason and most of them probably won’t see action until September. It’s a very impressive list: Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Matthew Stafford, Jared Goff, Philip Rivers, Drew Brees, Carson Wentz, Cam Newton, Ben Roethlisberger, Andrew Luck, Nick Foles and Mitch Trubisky.
The growing wave across the NFL is to treat preseason games like the injuries-waiting-to-happen that they are.
“We’ll see how long we play. That’ll depend how well we do,” Arians said of Friday’s Bucs-Browns game. “I have never set in stone how many plays were going to play or how long we’re going to play. I got a feel for that at the game.”
That “feel” Arians is seeking from his starters? Some coaches have it already.
Preseason is very valuable in assessing players. But it’s also unnecessary at the same time — a very odd combination.
A fan told Joe the other day that Jason Licht had undrafted guys like Cameron Brate and Adam Humphries make the team in large part due to their preseason performances. Well, Joe countered that both players also were cut during the 2015 season.
Joe just hopes Arians has the magic formula that gets the Bucs off to a solid start and at least a 3-3 record at the bye week.

Even harder to comment about…it is strictly for coaches post game and practice to evaluate individual action and reaction…hard to watch and even harder not to watch

Preseason is practice against another team with spectators & refs…..it has some value for evaluating unknown players and developing experience for rookies etc.
Sitting experienced players is wise…..

I read an article on NFL.com yesterday that floated the idea of one more playoff game, and only 3 PS games in CBA negotiations. I’d like to see that explored some more.

I like what he said the other day about us being the best team in the league during the last 5 minutes and 2 minute situations. Gay said yesterday “BA has practicing so many situations”. It was refreshing to hear. A coaching staff actually preaching situational football. Games are won and lost more so than not in the last 5 minutes of a game. Warms my heart to know in those situations this season we’ll have a plan of attack and our guys will play with the confidence of knowing “we’ve prepared for this a 1000 times”.

I don’t put much into preseason football other then looking for flashes of talent from developmental players and avoiding injuries. There’s no game planning, no time to get in rhythm….You hope to not look terrible but even if Winston played poorly, we aren’t making any changes. Its boom, bust or blah….time will tell.

All those QBs are not in the first year of a new system.

Our starting OL has added Cappa to the starters and they need this game to develop good chemistry this Friday. It also will be a tough test to see how well our OL can play and see if we can get our running game going like we did in the first game. If Jones can’t play use Barber and Ogunbowale alternating to get it going. We have to make the threat of the running game real so play action will free up our WRs to get separation and benefit Jameis.

the wussification of america by the gender neutral hand sanitizer generation is pretty hilarious. everybody is scared of everything…. bubble wrap the world…. the real men that started the nfl must be turning in their graves how their once great games has been rendered to powder puff levels. soft mentally weak fragile players who can not play through anything more serious than broken nail. you people cry about the heat, you cry about practice, you cry about protecting all these basement title winners and then wonder why they $h!t the bed on game days every damn week. the collective bargaining agreement is softer than charmin what a bunch of pansy’s arses athletes have turned into. good thing cancer93 never played for parcells he would have filled felony abuse charges the first day….

More playing time, just means that they will be exposed more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Preseason games probably give coaches and the front office additional quality data points in evaluating the back-half of the roster, but let’s not pretend that the real reason these games are played- in their current format- is anything other than squeezing full ticket prices and making $ off of associated revenue streams x 4 additional games.

i predict a 3-0 start and then 4-2 by the break.

Bunch of aging QB wrinkles on that list. Why is 40 y.o. Brady still playing? He’s rich, and has won every honor in the NFL multiverse. Preseason games are needed to weed out new players. How else is it done? In a regular season game? Spare me.

I for once agree with tmax. Injuries happen. But the reward of starting the season in football shape and everyone clicking becasue they got 3 games to get into the groove and work our all the kinks. Instead of all the sudden just having to go all out for 3 hours when it really counts. And having to work out the kinks the first 3 games of the year. When you could hit the season running and start out 3-0. But if you start 1-2 and everyone is healthy but you have to play catch-up the rest of the year. Can you imagine how basket ball and hockey players would be if they didn’t play there 20 preseason games to get into game time rhythm.
