On Friday night, the Bucs got after the quarterback.
It happened without JPP. It happened without Vita Vea. It happened without Lavonte David.
In their 16-14 victory against the Miami Dolphins, the Bucs recorded five sacks, all coming from different players. Three of those came in the first half on Dolphins starting QB Josh Rosen.
You want to know who caused two of them?
Shaq Barrett.
The ex-Broncos linebacker was all over the place once he stepped onto the field in the second quarter. He was a game-wrecker, helping put Rosen in the dirt on back-to-back plays.
On the first of the two, Barrett flew around the edge to record his sole sack of the night. On the second, he got to Rosen first, forcing him to step up in the pocket — right into the sack-hungry hands Patrick O’Connor.
Barrett was very excited about not only making a play of his own, but helping a teammate get on the stat sheet.
“It felt good,” Barrett told JoeBucsFan.com in a 1-on-1 interview following the victory. “That’s a way that I can affect the game even if it’s not, like, me actually making the play. I can help the team out and just do anything to help the team out or make a play. or just do anything because I just want to leave an imprint on the game. So, if I go out there and force a sack for somebody else it’s good. For me it’s good, for them, it’s good for the team so I just want to win. So, anything to win.”
That selfless attitude is exactly what the Bucs need from their pass rushers in the absence of Jason Pierre-Paul. They need a collect effort to fill the giant JPP void.
Barrett is a man on the rise. If he continues to play with the speed and the attitude displayed Friday, he might find himself atop the Bucs depth chart.
So, you better watch your back Noah Spence.

The acquisition everybody been sleeping on. No one gave a d@#$ when I kept saying 70% in run stop and pass rush the last 3 seasons. Hmmh, folks kinda understand better now. Shaq a animal.

Barret looked like a man possesed, kenney looked fast and hungry as well. If we get vea, david and eventually jpp back this front 7 could put up some numbers.
Although david could be a trade candidate, same with justin evans.

All the OLBs save Nassib look quicker than JPP ever did last year, IMO.

Another player who caught my eye was Demone Harris, I believe his name was.. he did have the plenty for roughing the passer but other then that he wasn’t in the back field a lot. He also got a sack.

I hope Barrett is good, they signed him to come in and start and last I saw he was behind Spence on the depth chart. Which isn’t a bad thing if Spence is just playing so well he’s put Barrett unexpected as a depth rusher – if the Bucs got that, then wow, what a bonus.

I think our outside linebackers should be Barrett and Spence. That’s a lot speed and craft for any oline to deal with. Nassib probably won’t start much this season but he is good depth and value right now. He’s too good to cut but not to good to be traded though. I love our depth on defense right now in the 3-4.

Shaq Barrett wasn’t brought in to sit in the trophy case. Last night he demonstrated a split image of Von Miller. Shaq will run circles around Spence n Nassib. He’s hungry, aggressive, has a chip on his shoulder, n ready to get to work. Shaq will have double sacks this season. Suh, Shaq, JPP, Vea, DWhite, LDavid. This is a smash mouth defense. Let’s put the NFL n Vegas on alert, this defense is on the rise.

Nassib is listed for the left side, often reserved for bigger or heavier End/OLB. Barrett is on the right side below Noah. Until JPP comes back, both players seems correctly placed on the depth chart.
With the rotation and the need to keep our guys fresh, there will be plenty of play time for all three players.

I definitely missed something last night I guess. Yes we got 5 sacks, but against a 2nd team Miami OLine that looked as poor as our 2nd team Oline did. Saw way too many plays where their QB had much too much time to pass. Rosen in particular missed a number of easy connections (inaccurate passes) & his receivers also dropped a number of easy completions. And Miami’s running game showed me relatively little.
Barrett played well I thought, and personally feel he should be listed in front of Spence (who showed good energy but had little to show for it because he gets ridden out of the plays too easily). It’s obvious to me that the Bucs NEED the middle of our DLine to really put pressure on the QB. Vea & Suh together can do that, but I’m not seeing any of our other DTs getting that kind of push. That’s about the only way that our OLBs can be truly effective or that our defenders can blitz effectively. We NEED BOTH of the big guys in there as much as possible.

Last night two things happened: 1) We all got to play footsie with Todd Bowles aggressive defense and, 2) Jimmy Goroppolo shart his pants watching the film.
Downtown San Francisco now isn’t the only place in that city that smells like sh!t!

Shaq was brought in for depth but, if he plays like that consistently, he might end up starting.

StonedBuc I haven’t been wanting to come out and say that but I don’t recall seeing LVD on sideline last night or last week. For a simple procedure I find it peculiar his absence from the sideline.

The Bucs need the cap money more then they need ol three finger, broken neck JPP. Bowles defense doesn’t rely on a traditional 4-3 D end, that’s what JPP is, not an OLB. Our sacks will come from everywhere this year. Take that cap savings, and find a decent back up O tackle.

Unlike previous seasons, these guys are playing like they might get cut if they slack-off.

Shaq will be a starter. He proved what he can do in Denver. Agree Demone Harris flashed last night too. Finally have some speed and nasty coming off the edge. Buchanon is all over the place wreaking havoc too. DBs are contesting every catch. Love what I’m seeing from this defense so far.

Can we get a look at how many plays each player is playing, I would normally say who cares because it is preseason, but it seems as if in your first 10 defensive snaps you don’t get a sack (Noah), you are a bust.
