Plenty of good and plenty of miserable tonight on the field at the Den of Depression.
Bucco Bruce Arians’ head is shaking at his second and third units.
He can’t believe their sloppiness. Bucs fans watching the good guys beat the Dolphins tonight would agree.
“They’re lucky we’re not cutting tomorrow,” Arians said, noting the units delivered “the continuation of the dumbest penalties I’ve ever seen.”
Arians was barking following the preseason opener about the sloppy play and loads of penalties. The Bucs dropped that to just eight penalties tonight, but Arians was miffed about hitting a Miami quarterback in the head and more. Most teams like to keep penalties to a maximum of five per game.
To be fair, a 45-yard Dare Ogunbowale run early in the third quarter was wiped out by what Joe thought was a horrible call of holding on undrafted free agent offensive lineman Zack Bailey.
Arians said he was happy with the overall play of his top-20 players, so that’s a very good thing.
Joe loves how Arians will call out crappy play and threaten to make cuts. It’s refreshing and fun.

The penalty to the head, the one on Fitz? That was sort of just a passing swipe that hit the facemask, which yes, is a call, but I don’t know what you do there to avoid that. You need to keep your hands up since you’re trying to get the ball – and on that particular play I didn’t see anything dumb, it was just bad luck since it hit the facemask, had it hit the side of the helmet there’s no call.
Unless I’m forgetting one… which is likely considering how many penalties there were.

It seems like we like to wait until third to commit a penalty…..helping them stay on the field……
I like BA’s focus on this…..it will sink in. We did better this week….

I was not happy about the pentalties and counted 4 that nullified big plays. Big plays getting ereased is exactly why too much pentalties is an issue and was on full display tonight.
That said there was a noticable drop from last week in pentalties. I don’t have a problem with mistakes in preseason as long as they are getting corrected. We are trending the right way and if that continues it will not be an issue once the season starts.
When we play next week our starter will see more time & they have noticable played much cleaner football then the backups. I expect less pentalties next week.

The Zach Bailey holding penalty was bull and BA was irate with Justin call. Didn’t get a replay so it must’ve been bull. Just like last week they actually showed Noah’s play to confirm the actually was an infraction.

How can you make a call about the first team being good. What was he evaluating how they stretched out before the game?

Agreed the penalties were bad. What really stood out to me though were the ’12 men’ and then the punt return with no returner. You simply cannot have those types of blunders AND that is 100% on coaching.
I’d be trying to hide if I were Special Teams Coach this morning!

We have the most amount of coaches in the NFL, and we can’t get the number of players on the field right? As far as the penalties go, lay some of the blame on the refs. The holding call on Bailey was bad, and BA let the refs know it. The one roughing the passer foul was a hit to the QB’s shoulder not his head. Refs need to stop throwing flags for what they think they see. To many great plays across the NFL are being wiped out do to ticky, tack crap that doesn’t even affect the play. The officiating is ruining the NFL!!

Yes that roughing the passer call was total crap! I guess he hit his shoulder too hard.

Arians is a breath of fresh air for sure. I have not been this optimistic for the Bucs in a long time.

The Penalties will really drop if BA will just cut the player with three separate penalties in yesterday’s game and make an example of him!
