Dare To Cut Him

Bucco Bruce Arians can brag about his running backs but Joe doesn’t think they are all that special.

Ronald Jones looks better. Peyton Barber looks like Peyton Barber — lots of movement but few yards. Andre Ellington mostly looks like a guy who fell asleep on his couch on football Sundays last year.

But the Bucs may have a nice little backup. This Dare Ogunbowale impresses Joe. He gets yards. He has moves. And the third-year player can catch the ball and get YAC.

Through three quarters Ogunbowale didn’t have a great yards-per -carry number but he did have a nice 10-yard run.

Also, Ogunbowale had a fine catch-and-run off a screen early in the fourth quarter for 41 yards. He also had a 45-yard run called back on a crap holding call in the third quarter.

He has shown Joe enough spark that he deserves long consideration for a roster spot.

Dare stays but Ellington must go.

  2. Rod Munch Says:

Those runs up the middle into run blitzes is what kills your average – it’s what Dirk did over and over and over again. So you can’t look at the average, have to look at the actual plays, and the guy has some good movement. If he can catch at all I’d keep him around, but I think Ellington is going to stick around just because of that. I’m not sure Dare is going to make another roster since there’s so many guys that look like him in the preseason, so most likely he’s a PS guy, but he’ll most likely get a chance at some point this season to do something.

  3. JimmyJack Says:

Keep the RBs that can make the most plays please.

  4. StonedBuc Says:

Wisconsin rbs tend to be pretty solid.

  5. JimmyJack Says:

Don’t really see how you could justify keeping Ellington over Dare. One guy has done his job and made plays. The other guy has not made plays and has missed blocks and fumbled tonight. No brainier for me.

  6. BA FAN Says:

Dare will be the Third Down Back this year and also backup Barber so he will definitely have a job. Ellington will be a backup to Rojo and has good hands and speed. Rojo will alternate with Barber. Anderson will be in the Practice Squad and will have to be developed there as a backup if needed.

  7. jjbucfan Says:

They all stay- Bruce to practice squad and we keep 2 QBs. Gabbert gets cut or traded for a six pack of beer and bag of donuts. That is what should happen, However, would be shocked if it does.

  8. Buccaroo Says:

They’ve got another one that’s sort of under the radar that I’m sure they will stash on to the PS in Bruce Anderson. This team looks good to me at RB. Get some guys coached up for Oline depth and I think our running game is going to be a big surprise. But just like last season, it all starts up front.

  9. Snook Says:

Hey Joe: Koetter’s backs are averaging 3.1 yards per carry through 3 games for Atlanta. Sound familiar? It’s not the RBs. Hate to break it to you.

  10. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I have not been impressed with Bruce Anderson at all.

    We’ll keep 4 RBs. 6 WRs. 4 TEs. 2 QBs.

  11. NOSBOS Says:

BA knows unlike you that a premier RB is not needed in this offensive system. I recall watching David Johnson during the senior bowl the year he came out. His first touch went for I think a 30 yard rushing touchdown. But no one was clamoring for him that draft season. H3ll no one probably knew who he was. BA’s system help make him household.

  12. NOSBOS Says:

Now if you wanna talk about hating to see someone possibly go. Tanner Hudson is a whole nother issue.

  13. NOSBOS Says:

For those of you in love with Cam Brate. Tanner could give this team the exact same production. Easy. No pun intended but that white boy raw.

  14. Buccaroo Says:

    Bonzai

How can you? He hasn’t really played, and yes we’ll keep 4 smart guy and that’s why if you go back and read again you will notice that I said the PS but hey thanks for your critique. It means a lot to me. Without your infinite wisdom I would be wandering around needlessly in this little corner of Joe’s interweb. So again, salute!

  15. Delaware Bucs Fan Says:

Dare seems to be the better option vs ellington. 100% with NOSBOS, would you rather have tanner at his $ or Brate at his $$$$$? Tough call and we could really use some cash for O Line or D help. Who’s the better value?

  16. Rod Munch Says:

jjbucfan – I don’t see anyway someone is giving up donuts for Gabbert, that’s nonsense.

  17. Jason S. Mclaurin Says:

I agree with Joe on this one. Dare is playing great thru the preseason so far. I feel he and Barber should start. Rojo still needs work to me but he is progressing nice. Realistically this may be Barber’s final season in Tampa whether he makes a jump statistically or not and Dare has more potential than both he and Rojo at this point.

  18. Defense Rules Says:

@Bonzai … “We’ll keep 4 RBs. 6 WRs. 4 TEs. 2 QBs.” IF you’re right Bonzai, the 2nd QB better be Griffin … Gabbert looks terrible IMO; too tentative on many plays. However, I think we’ll keep 3 QBs, only because everyone seems to be afraid of the fact that Ryan Griffin has never gotten to throw a pass in a real NFL game.

Can’t see Ellington making it onto the roster. A good training camp addition to show the young backs how BA wants it done, but he reminds me too much of Jacquizz Rodgers from last year. Steady & reliable, but nothing exceptional in terms of actual production. Hmmm, come to think of it, that sounds a lot like Peyton Barber too. Bucs don’t need 2 of those.

However the actual personnel work out, I’m thinking that BA will go with a balanced roster … 25 offense, 25 defense & 3 S/Ts, although he may only keep 24 defenders until Ryan Smith’s suspension runs out after Game 4. That’d allow him to keep an extra offensive guy to start the season & see who REALLY PRODUCES when the bullets really start flying. But hey, time will tell.

  19. Bculaw Says:

He may be the best back on the roster.

  20. Jonathan Limpchimpi Says:

Licht signed a secret 5 year extension in the offseason? Stunning…hope this all works out. Looking forward to JBF’s take…

  21. Frank Pillow Says:

At this point all of the backs are virtually indistinguishable, save Barber and Ellington’s experience in pass pro.

  22. Hodad Says:

Doesn’t make sense to keep Ellington, and carry four RB’s. If someone does go down due to injury, Ellington would still be available. No one is going to pick him up if he’s cut. Even if he’s not available, any back off the street would do just as well. The guy was out of football for a reason last year.

  23. firethecannons Says:

agree with NOSBOS tanner hudson is worth keeping and cam brate could fetch us another player where we have many needs on the defense make your money Licht!

  24. TampaTown Says:

I like this kid Dare. He’s got soft hands too. He’s been a nice surprise.

  25. Buccfan37 Says:

Plus his name is pretty cool, I think he sticks.

  26. ModHairKen Says:

Of all the positions, I did not expect RB or TE to be where the tough decisions get made. Does Brate have trade value?

  27. hamilton Says:

all four rb will make the team, stop complaining.

  28. Joe Says:

Hey Joe: Koetter’s backs are averaging 3.1 yards per carry through 3 games for Atlanta. Sound familiar? It’s not the RBs. Hate to break it to you.

Long before anyone else, Joe was writing about this. Why do you often try to attack Joe?

  29. TOM Says:

IMO Dare is a lock to make the team 53 man roster. If he doesn’t get hurt.

  30. Matt Says:

I think he should make the team over Ellington. I don’t think we should keep 4 RBs on this roster. Maybe it depends who the 4 RBs are.
