Former Bucs QB Chris Simms talks Jameis Winston’s 2019 debut
It was one drive, one glorious and balanced 81-yard touchdown drive celebrated by Bucs fans one week ago. But former Tampa Bay quarterback Chris Simms thinks it was even more than that.
It could be a overlooked signal of the maturation of America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, Simms told his NBC Sports audience. But he’s not ready to say the Bucs are a team possessing what it needs to win.
“I think we should give it a little but more due diligence than it’s getting. I’ll say that,” Simms said on Unbuttoned.
“Because yes, it did show, one, some nice movement in the pocket, but two, there was no semblance of a dumb decision or a, ‘Why are you forcing that down there against the Pittsburgh Steelers?’ It looked pretty smooth. I guess it’s not getting the attention it should be getting because we are probably expecting this improvement from Bruce Arians. But we’ve been expecting an improvement from Jameis Winston for four years in a row now and we still get these, you know, knucklehead, head-scratching type moves. And we saw none of that.
“That was a good start. And the Bucs are one of those teams, they can throw a whole wrench into the NFC. I don’t know what to expect from them. They have some talent at some key positions. They got very good coaches on both sides of the ball. But they’re young. Jameis is unproven. You know, there are some defensive guys that are unproven. They could be a pain in the butt and ruin a lot of people’s playoff chances this year and be in playoff contention themselves. If you told me they ended up 4-12, I don’t know if I’d be that shocked, either.”
Well, unlike Simms, Joe would be shocked if the Bucs were 4-12. If that happened, Team Glazer would need to look in the mirror and decide whether any of their football people know what the hell they’re doing. And they certainly would need to start quarterback shopping.
On the flip side, Joe would be surprised if the Bucs were contending for a playoff berth.
Joe will agree with Simms on the Bucs being a potential “pain the butt.” Barring injuries, they have the offensive firepower to beat any team, and one would hope the team would be better late in the season after adjusting to new schemes and coaches.

Wow, the season hasn’t even started and we’re discussing how the Bucs could be spoilers in OTHER teams playoff bids?

It, no doubt, was a nice, scripted first drive. We all want to see #3 & Leftwitch perform when things aren’t going well! That’s when #3 is more prone to the WTFs.

Barring any key injuries to Winston, if the Bucs finish 4-12 it’s time to sell the team I know they won’t, but they should. Either that or hire a president of football operations, never show their faces around here again, and focus on destroying Manchester United for some British tears.

Jameis wont have the stupid Koetter gimmick plays to deal with.
If he minimizes turnovers, he will have a great year- just listen to Arians and execute.

It is a tuff stretch in the middle of the schedule. 9-7 wouldnt be to shabby considering the daunting schedule at hand.

Bucs will go as far as their defense allows them to go. I’m not that concerned with Jameis but still not a believer in Todd Bowles as a magician.

I’d be shocked at 4-12, but 28 teams in the league could go 4-12 if injuries got them big.

I would like nothing more than to have a winning season but I also would love to have two super models waking me up in the morning with breakfast in bed….. but that ain’t happening either. I just hope we don’t play week enough to lose a high enough draft slot to pick up a quality QB.

I getting really sick of this 100% false narrative that Jameis just makes dumb decisions constantly. It is completely false as yes he has turned the ball over but it is not ALWAYS just a stupid decisions. To act like he just throws the ball up every play is simply ridiculous.

Morgus…they cover the field. This one drains particularly well too. Not an issue unless it rains during the game.

8-8 is what I expect and messing with the other perceived “good teams” seasons
Don’t be surprised if a loss to the Bucs late in the season cost the Texans, Colts or Falcons a playoff berth

Anyone notice that the Falcons have played 3 pre-season games already with Koetter’s offense and they have 266 yards rushing on 84 carries?
That’s 3.17 yards per carry.
SOUND FAMILIAR????
Koetter’s offense SUCKS. Put aside any judgment you’ve made on a player who has only played in Koetter’s offensive system. 3.1 yards per carry. Let that sink in.

Have you seen the schedule Joe? 4-12 is not out of the question.
The floor should be 10 wins. If this team was simply poorly coached, and is supposedly better than the 9-7 season, and we’re just reloading, then 10 wins is the minimum.
9-7 isn’t gonna cut it.

Are others factors involved in turnovers? No doubt, in Jameis’s 76 career turnovers I doubt his staunch defenders can blame them all or the majority on someone else

Bucs end up 4-12, and Glazer Boys need to sell the team to a group of monied Bucs fans–plenty of them up and down the Gold and Space Coasts. Then the Glazers can go to the UK and stay there with their beloved soccer team whatever it’s called–Manchester United?

Finally I feel super encouraged about the future. The damn N.F.L screwed us on our schedule this year. It’s going to be daunting. I dont think the younger players will handle it so well. I’m think 8 and 8 this year. 11-5 next season. Next season these young guys will have the experience needed after foing through schedule hell
