“Oblique Strain” For Beau Allen

August 11th, 2019

Some people do, but Joe’s not one to blame injuries on a coaching staff.

However, it’s a thought worth considering when the coaching staff goes out of its way to celebrate an A-list sports science team in place to keep players healthy and get them ready for a long season.

Again, just something to think about as the Bucs continue to rack up injuries this summer. Hey, for all Joe knows, the sports science team has helped the Bucs not have more injuries than they already do.

Bucco Bruce Arians clarified today that defensive tackle Beau Allen sat out Friday night with an “oblique strain.”

OK. Add Allen to the list.

Today Arians also praised the toughness of safety Kentrell Brice, an offseason pickup who was on the Packers the past three years: “Some guys took the day off; he practiced. That’s an “A” in my book,” Arians said.

Ironically, at 4:43 p.m. Saturday, Joe got a text from a consistently fantastic source of Bucs information. “I’ve been hearing a lot of the guys are complaining that camp has been too tough, and they aren’t having enough time to recover. Too much pressure to not miss time.”

Seemingly right on cue, Arians goes out of his way today to send a public message that practicing hurt gets an “A” from the head coach.

Joe just putting this all out there. Loads of teams have injuries. Heck, the Saints had 15 guys on injured reserve during the 2018 regular season.

Dirk Koetter used a biblical tone to describe the Jack Del Rio method he followed to get players to opening day healthy. That sure didn’t work — except on opening day when he was 3-0 during his tenure.

Injuries are part of the game. Finding just the right ways to prevent as many as possible is no easy task, especially in the extremes of the Florida climate.

  2. Buccernutter Says:

    Sounds like Donavan Smith complained.

  3. Lunchbox Says:

Well other coaches have taken the easy approach, and sustained many injuries. Personally, I would agree with Arians on this. Is it hard? Sure, but it’s a hard sport, played by tough guys. Provided they can stay relatively healthy, this should help them in the long run.

  4. ModHairKen Says:

Too tough, huh? Quit. Walk away. Retire.

  5. Adrnagy Says:

You always take the challenge. No muff to tuff. Lol
Imagine our military training soft ?
You sign on then be a pro and deal with it. This isn’t college. You can stay healthy then retire or get cut.

  6. JimmyJack Says:

Holy crap too tough? Well Bruce could make it easier for them but then we will be freaking losers again.

Find out who thinks it’s too hard and replace them as soon as you can please. We are tired of losing.

Hey Bucs if it was supposed to be easy we wouldn’t be cellar dwellers for last 2 decades. Stop freaking disgracing the city and act like football players you big fat P’s.

  7. BigMacAttack Says:

I don’t want to read too much into this just yet, but this team was a swamp. Two big cancers were sent packing but it may take time to shed that GMC losing mentality

  8. sincethebeginning Says:

I honestly can’t believe we’re already hearing this loser mentality garbage again out of that locker room. I hope your source is exaggerating, and I hope the players doing the b!tching are in the extreme minority.

Tell your source to tell the complainers to toughen up or gtfo. It’s football at the highest level. It requires the toughest athletes. Physically as well as mentally.

Ridiculous on so many levels. I mean, So Arians takes the Bill Parcells approach. In what way is that bad??

  9. Waterboy Says:

I like the tough practices they help weed out the weak with enough time to replace some of them before the grid of the season starts.

  10. Race to 10 Says:

Whiny generation so its gotta be young veterans because established guys would be the complainers. Rookies and young guys looking for a payday wouldn’t say it’s too tough, they haven’t been through enough camps

  11. Pryda...Sec147 Says:

Y’all getting paid to freaking play a game! Whining losers need to get off my team !

  12. Jimmy Says:

Arians coached with Bear Bryant. Go ahead and Google “Junction Boys.”

Welcome to football little girls. Wah!

  13. Jimmy Says:

These effers practice in the GD air conditioning!!! What next, they are going to whine about not enough Kotex in the trainer’s room to go around?

Toughen up, buttercup. No wonder this team is a loser. Maybe GMC was right? No sacks man.

  14. Sport Says:

Oh…..how refreshing. A coach who understands hard work in practice will make the games easy. (John Wooden philosophy)

This team has been soft for far too long.

BA will not tolerate weakness, complacency or stupidity.

More change and improvement is coming.

    In BA I Trust!

  15. BigHog Says:

Beau Allen …recouped big guy, next man up!!

  16. Defense Rules Says:

Camp too tough? Not enough time to recover? Too much pressure to practice? Could all very well be true … in light of most of these players past experiences. Facts seem to be …

o Bucs went 5-11 last 2 years, with apparently less pressure & easier camps.
o Weather in Tampa, Florida isn’t just hot & muggy in the summertime; it’s brutal & oppressive.
o Injuries are a fact of life in the NFL, and even more-so it seems in climates like exist here in Florida. Bucs were the most injured team in the NFL last year, and seem to rank high each year in terms of player-games lost due to injuries.

The Jaguars had gone 3-13 in 2016, and had established a losing tradition prior to that. Jags injury report shows that they lost 148 player-games to IR & 21 games out that losing year … not very many actually. Tom Coughlin & the new coach (Doug Marone) decided that they needed to toughen up, so in 2017 they ran what was described by many players as a brutal training camp. That season Jags went 10-6 and made the playoffs. Their reported injuries? Jags lost 295 player-games that year, with another 18 games Out. Almost double the player-games lost due to injuries, and yet they tripled their wins.

Doesn’t seem to make sense at face value. Logically, more injuries SHOULD correlate to more losses. But that year, for the Jags, it didn’t. MAYBE it’s got more to do with who the injuries happen to (key players vs depth players). MAYBE the harder training camp resulted in depth players being better trained to fill in. MAYBE something else was at play, no idea.

What I do know is that Bruce Arians has been doing this SUCCESSFULLY for a LONG TIME. He’s put together a highly-trained coaching staff to deal with issues like this. Personally think I’d rather trust his judgment than some consistently fantastic source of Bucs information who’s claiming that some players are upset that they’re being worked too hard. Probably some of the same players who SAY they hate losing, and yet kept on losing. Turning POTENTIAL into SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE is hard work. No excuses.

  17. Bucsfanman Says:

Good! Keep practicing hard coach. We saw the product of what the opposite achieves.
Now, rub some dirt on it and get out there!

  18. Clodhopper Says:

Training camp has been too tough.

This and the article about GMC go hand in hand

Guys on this team arent used to working as hard as the rest of the league.

  19. Todd Says:

I never in my life thought I’d wake up thinking, “We have to protect that Gay hamstring!”

  20. Just Sayin’ Says:

Still too many losers who don’t want to put in the effort & are happy to collect a check. Looters, who is John Gault?

  21. Ra'Shad Says:

I believe that’s the reason we have suck the past few years.

  22. Harry in Costa Rica Says:

@Defense Rules, the Jags were exactly what I was thinking while reading this. Hopefully that is what the Bucs will get out of this. DR, I like reading your comments as you are the article within the article!

Beat me to it. Add in accelerated climate change. Smart teams adapt to it. Hope BA is aware of it.

  24. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Just a thought, but minor injuries always happen on teams. In recent years, its the major injuries that have plagued the Bucs.

So I don’t mind injuries that make a player miss only 1-2 games. That’s actually an improvement in my book.

Although, no injuries is better, it’s next to impossible.

  25. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    @Just Sayin’

Let them complain. Arians will get rid of them.

90 players on the team, atm. Complainers could be camp meat for all we know, right?

  26. pick6 Says:

cause and effect are not linked. if there are lots of injuries, whatever the coaches are doing is seen as terrible. if folks are relatively healthy, it’s attributed to some great foresight by the coaches.

tough camps have been credited with both injury “vaccination” and with injury proliferation, and light camps have been seen as a way to stay healthy and as a way to fail to get ready for the season. it just depends on what random injuries occur.

at least with a tough camp you know the guys who complete it

that being said, i bet next year’s camp is a little lighter. practice will be built around what the coaches know about the players already, and hopefully the team doesn’t need as extreme of an example of what toughness looks like

  27. pick6 Says:

*at least with a tough camp you know the guys who complete it can compete on sunday

  28. LordCornelius Says:

Most injured defense in like NFL history last year so yeah I wouldn’t take the Koetter or Smitty approach again.

    GO BUCS

  29. Cobraboy Says:

I wonder what the survivors of Ray Perkins 3-a-days at Tampa U would say about this Bucs training camp?

  30. Barbosa Says:

Exactly Cobraboy. I can’t remember the draft picks name , but there was a running back that Perkins drafted that showed up for those 3 a days 25 lbs overweight. Perkins solution was to dress him in garbage bags and have him ride a stationary bike outside in the summer heat during those practices. Once the guy lost the weight, Perkins called him into his office and cut him.

  31. Jackpc1 Says:

For all the millions, I would never complain when coaches expect me to show up. Heck, I remember two a days, and wonder we never got anyone killed.

  32. Mike Johnson Says:

K-Billie’s HITS from the 70’s just gettin warmed up. Another injury? So what? Get her done. NO EXCUSES!i
