Ugly Night For Ex-Bucs Kicker

Bucs fans can relate to Jets fans.

Up in New Jersey, former Bucs and current Jets kicker Chandler Catanzaro demonstrated why he is an ex-Bucs kicker as he missed two of his three extra-point attempts in a 31-22 preseason Jets loss to Big Blue, the Giants, last night.

Ugh.

This is why the Bucs cannot have nice things. For the past five years, this team has been absolutely haunted by horrid kicking. Late last season when the Bucs turned to Cairo Santos, it stopped the bleeding a little. Santos was solid from short distances, bad from long distances.

It sparked the best one-liner Joe has ever heard in a press box. And that came from veteran local sports columnist Gary Shelton.

The Bucs were marching on what appeared to be a scoring drive by crossing midfield to the opponent’s 40. Then, Shelton said, “The Bucs are entering missed field goal territory.”

Currently, the Bucs have an interesting kicking competition on their hands. There is Santos, the veteran who is accurate on short kicks but doesn’t have the long-distance range, and rookie Matt Gay, who has a booming leg but has been slightly skittish from short distances in training camp.

In this WTVT-TV Channel 13 video, Gay talks to Kevin O’Donnell about how he approaches his roster battle with Santos.

The Bucs will keep both kickers for their respective strengths and on week 1 they’ll both miss all their field goals. #Itsabucslife

Should hold open tryouts. It’s not that hard. Should be done former Mutiny players playing in a beer league in Oldsmar that could get the job done.

  3. Jameis Almighty! Says:

Keep em both. Set a new trend.

  4. Buc4evr Says:

Next year Gump drafts 6 kickers. LOL.

  5. Rod Munch Says:

Monken threw the ball 43 times tonight and only ran it 23 times. With that running balance you can see why Dirk took away his play calling duties. So what if you win 30-10, it’s not about W’s and L’s, it’s about having a perfect 50/50 pass/run balance, that’s what is important!

  6. delson Says:

Koetter will raise Monken 40 to 5 rushing attempts

Ira had a scorcher the other day on the podcast. I’m paraphrasing but it went something like:

Ira: “Nobody believes that to be the case Rock, nobody”
Rock Riley: “Steve seems to believe it!”
Ira: “Yeah! But he’s a nobody!”

    I was cracking up 😆

Let’s hope it keeps raining in NY in that regard.

  9. Swampbuc Says:

Catanzaro is toast. He did beat the Browns with a 59 yarder though.

  10. EvolvingBucsFan Says:

When you keep an extra kicker and not an extra DE/OLB its a Bucs Life.

  11. Stanglassman Says:

Keeping them both is not going to happen. It didn’t happen often if at all years ago when you had 11 starters on both sides a time without all the rotation on DL. Bowles has two completely different types of OLBs to be dressed depending on a pass or run heavy opponent. Now with so much rotation and roster flexibility needed it just can’t happen. You can only dress 46 on game day.

  12. DBS Says:

No reason this team should constantly be trying to kick field goals. That was the problem counting on the kicker when they should be putting in the end zone. Quit being great between the 20’s. But other wise they do need a compatant kicker.

  13. ALBucsFan Says:

Agree with DBS. Remember when Rams greatest show on turf went without a kicker after an injury? Scored TDs and went for 2 every time.

  14. tnew Says:

Funny how he “won” the Browns game with a 59 yarder. He missed an extra point and a 40 yarder as time expires. But yet most remember this game way differently.

I did watch the panthers/ Bears because it was on local. J elliot looked good and started at nickle for the panthers and ted larsen starting at rg for them. Bears have there own kicking battle and both kickers look good… an ex gator and an ex appollo that didn’t cost a draft pick… DUH. Panthers are really hyping #93.
