“Everybody Needs That Little Fire And Spark”

August 8th, 2019

Donovan Smith

Look who was talking about coaches lighting fires under players yesterday.

It was ironman left tackle Donovan Smith, who has been known to lack fire during a snap or two each football Sunday.

Smith had a smile in his voice talking about Bucco Bruce Arians getting all over players when they make mistakes. “

Everybody needs that little fire and spark,” Smith told SiriusXM NFL Radio.

Co-host Pat Kirwan talked to Smith about how sometimes it takes until the first time you’re losing at halftime to really know what your head coach is all about, implying that’s when all the rage and tough talk can come out.

Smith laughed and said that’s not Arians; the daggers are flying already, “You’re going to bet B.A. if you miss an assignment,” he said.

Joe has heard similar sentiment from other players. Arians is all over them at times.

Smith did not mention the tweaked Achilles that cost him practice time earlier in training camp. Asked about not missing a start through four seasons, Smith credited extreme rest. He says you won’t find him out at night or doing much of anything on his feet outside of football training.

“I love my bed,” Smith said.

As far as the toughness of training camp, Smith believes the many sessions indoors have raised the challenge.

“It gets stuffy in there; you can’t breathe,” Smith said. “You get a nice little sweat in there. … It makes it harder” with no breeze.

    Just an observation here.

If you took this photo of Donovan Smith and turned it upside down, it would remarkably still look like…Donavan Smith.

any player who needs a fire lit under their arse after a huge payday is truly a buccaneers and glazer man in pursuit of basement titles and retirement goals surly not championships… not a single quality o lineman on the entire roster. scary really scary

Don’t worry about the Bucs trading next year’s pick that are for the NEW GM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dude the Bucs In the Current is pretty sweet. They have some solid videographers working on that. Not much of a difference in production quality between their show and Hard Knocks

I like Donovanas a guy but my issue with him is that he will look like a stalwart AllPro grade 1 mailer with elite strength on one play and the very next play he’ll look like a practice squad guy with the slowest feet in the NFL. Durability and availability are great but with that kind of dichotomy what good is it? Hopefully having guidance from someone other than WarFlop can bring out the consistency in him.

If we have success this year it’ll be super interesting to see who gets contracts/ how we play that game next season.

We could in theory blow the whole roster up basically in terms of 1 year deals or players with deals ending/ no cap penalties for cutting:

    Winston – 20M
    Jensen – 10m
    Lavonte – 11M
    JPP – 12M
    Gholston – 5M
    Suh – 9M
    Brate – $7m

then there’s Beau Allen / Shaq Barret / Buccanon / Perriman making up $13M

Like $90M there lol. We’ll be super flexible to retain whoever we want and sign other players.

Ideal thing is this team kicks some 4ss and we have a foundation to build around. Re-sign the core of that, and let everyone else go get deals in FA to load up on 2021 compensatory picks. 2020 draft all DL & OL, and start managing the roster like the Pats and constantly play that compenstatory game and draft well. 10 super bowls. Let’s do it.

    GO BUCS

“I love my bed,” Smith said.

I’ve never heard a successful person say this. Most are up and out of bed early.

He also loves to block for 2 seconds on a 3 second pass play. Maybe if he was more vertical instead of horizontal he might be more successful.

  14. Smashsquatch Says:

    D. Smith lacks urgency both on and off the field. I could care less if his hobby is sleeping off the field; but if the loafing continues on the field he’ll get a healthy dose of BA breathing down his neck. He needs to show more hustle and play through the whistle. I’ll believe it when I see it.

  15. BucsFan727 Says:

Hes soft compared to lets say Cam Jordan. Build the trenches all ready. Licht is good for contract negotiations not evaluating tallent. I hope BA is buying the groceries from here on out. 1 of two things has to happen to be a competitive team. Either the defence becomes a top ten unit or the olinemen grow a pair and start playing up to the contracts worth. Stop bringing lazy players in Licht.

  16. BA FAN Says:

I am thrilled that BA has lit a fire under D. Smith. He needs it. No
Loading, Block and no holding penalties either! Play to the whistle! If anyone gets by you yell a warning to Jameis to avoid a strip sack, etc. Or Else!!!

  17. BA FAN Says:

Loafing not Loading! Hate a correcting “Smart” Phone!!!

  18. JimmyJack Says:

It’s mind boggling how often this team missed assignments. Even worse was our players did not seem to be disciplined by the coaching staff and would stay on the field after missing assignments.

Everybody remembers Buffalo punching us in the lip with a three play TD drive to win the game. But that drive was basically all setup by one huge play. And on that huge play Robert McClain just up and forgot to cover the sideline. Total blown assignment. And a quick rewind shows him missing a sideline earlier in that game. Total lack of accountability & lack of preperation.

The last TD ever given up by that defense says it all. Brent Grimes(our most experienced) leading the way as 3 Buccaneers all collided into each other leaving 2 receivers more open then they have probably ever been in their career for the gimme TD. That should not happen on a professional football field ever…….for it to happen after running the same defense for 3 full years is absolutely embarrassing.

Thank the heavens that the Tampa2 is dead!!!

Wow…just, wow. The epitome of a dude that got paid and is going to go down easy street as much as he can from that signing point forward. He will turn into Anthony Collins 2.0

  20. mark2001 Says:

We sometimes forget that these are young men that have always been put on a pedestal…. and why not…they were bigger, stronger, and more athletic than their peers. There has to be someone around them bringing the fire… you can’t expect them to act like forty year old men. But when you can harness that youth, and potential, you can do extraordinary things. Finally…we again have a coaching staff capable of tapping into that.

  21. BuddhaBuc Says:

Don’t buy in to that whole “successful people wake up super early” crap. Someone posted that successful people wake up at 4am on Linkedin and J.K. Rowling responded “piss off”. I love that.

  22. Dapostman Says:

    @Buddahabuc,

You do realize there are exceptions to every rule. Geez and I had to tell you that.

  23. Bucnjim Says:

Well if I thought it would help I’d stand on the sideline with a flamethrower pointed at Smiths A$$. Unfortunately it doesn’t work that way and most people realize this. Coaches can only motivate players not teach them work ethic. It would be like asking a millennial when do you plan on moving out? The millennial answer would be why?
