Jameis Is A New Man; Jason Licht Explains

August 7th, 2019

Let’s call him America’s Quarterback, 5.0.

Yes, Jameis Winston is a changed man, general manager Jason Licht explained today on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

Legions of Bucs fans dreaming of an elite franchise quarterback (or at least another Josh Freeman 2010 season) will be absolutely mesmerized by Licht’s words today to a national audience.

“Just the way he’s carrying himself right now, he is very relaxed. He is very calm,” Licht said of Jameis. “He is a different guy than I’ve seen in the previous seasons that he’s been here. It’s a confidence. I feel like, you know, he knows we gotta win. And he knows he’s gotta cut back on mistakes. It’s almost like it’s, I don’t want to say ‘all of a sudden it clicked,’ but he realizes where we’re at and where he’s at and he’s comfortable with it.

“He’s kind of convinced me just the way he’s carrying himself. He hasn’t been trying to be the rah-rah guy. He hasn’t been trying to be the overall team, emotional leader. He’s focused.

“He knows that he’s got to play quarterback well, and that’s what a true quarterback does and then he leads by doing that.”

Joe is almost speechless hearing Licht’s remarks. It’s great that the GM sees a maturity he likes. What Bucs fans wouldn’t appreciate that. But Jiminy Christmas, if Bucs officials weren’t big fans of Jameis being the “rah-rah guy” and the emotional leader of the team around the clock, then why was he the quarterback they drafted?

That’s exactly who Jameis was coming out of college and that guy was embraced by Lovie Smith, and Dirk Koetter certainly didn’t try to coach that out of Jameis, per Joe’s knowledge.

Just win, Jameis. That’s what will get everyone to shutup about your demeanor.

Regardless, Jameis is a new man, per the GM, which got Joe thinking of “I’m A New Man.”

Other than Winston, there is NO ONE at Advent Health TC whose job is more fragile, and whose job also rides on Winston being successful. Taking these comments with a boulder of salt. Licht pumping up Winston makes himself look better. Yes, Winston is calmer, all that stuff. He knows how to act when he’s being watched. He’s a BS artist. As I’ve said…let’s see him go the year.

Still, both of those guys have zero cred with me. They blew it. Have to earn it back.

On a happy note, the weather in PIT Friday night is clear and 79 degrees…great weather to evaluate players….

Ok, but only for if you permanently retire “pro bowler” from the ridiculous moniker Joe!

  3. K2 Says:

Just like White you called Jameis the savior of the team. Maybe in his 5th year he will become a consistent and solid player. The Bucs don’t need a “savior” they need to become a team. One guy doesn’t make a winning team. Great player raise the level of those around them…and become a winning team. They don’t rescue or save. Savior and football have nothing in common.

  4. Dapostman Says:

Young players tend to be rah rah. Older guys know to save their energy and emotion for when it counts. This is not surprising at all. Looks like Winston is focused on his game and his game only. As a wise man once said, don’t just do your job but do your job well. Looks like Winston is starting to hear the whisper.

  5. Doctor Stroud Says:

But Jason Ricci is a Saints fan!

  6. Lamarcus Says:

JW always lead inspiring pre game speeches and he was over the top emotional with his speeches that lead him to demonstrate it by eating Ws literally when the team continued to get blown out. Fans and Bucs personal hated and now Licht serving the fans saying it is all but gone and it’s a problem? No Licht must keep things interesting anyway because fans do not support him.

  7. Tye Says:

Reminds me of all the times before big fights when you have the quiet, calm, confident fighter and then the other guy is constantly popping off, running his mouth, jawing about nothing…

The belt rings and the ‘loud mouth’ gets his mouth shut for him…
‘Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth”…
Soon there will be no where to hide, and The truth will come to the light!

going to be a Long season for this team! (figuratively of course; because their season will be done about week 10 or so)

  8. JGhoti86 Says:

Joe(s) are pumping out the hits tonight. Speechless is a great word for it. Those words are significant.

  9. tmaxcon Says:

I’m the biggest jameis fan going but meathead drafts kickers enough said…

  10. Joseph Mamma Says:

So no more rallying the troops with finger licking W’s?

  11. Ndog Says:

So just wondering what’s happens to all these Licht bashers if all the players he drafted live up to their draft status under a new coaching staff? Is he all of a sudden a genius?

  12. BigPoppaBuc Says:

I’ve always felt bad for the guy. He obviously loves football. He takes the job very seriously but the media and other players even, just make fun of him. He probably underestimated how much harder the NFL would actually be his first couple years. Then he got better. Then he got hurt. Then he got better. Then he got suspended. Then he got cuckolded by Fitz. Then he got better. I’ve given up on Winston probably four or five times now, but then he got better.
You have to be elite and win games to make it as the rah rah guy in the NFL. Winston was drafted by a franchise in shambles and he came in like Ray Lewis 2.0. that doesn’t work if you lose. Neither does turning the football over in bunches. This is year five. Jameis has done the Bucs about as much wrong as they’ve done him. STILL, my biggest fear for us fans is to watch him succeed elsewhere and ppl saying he sucked in Tampa. But then he got better.

  13. Buc believer Says:

Since Jason Gump says so it MUST be true!!! When has Gump ever been wrong about a player??

  14. AMI_Chris Says:

Jameis tries hard and I like him. He’s just not good enough. He is the 4th best QB in a 4-team division. Sad, but true.

  15. Race to 10 Says:

He was drafted because he was simply the better quarterback of all on the board. When you have the first overall pick and Josh mccown and mike glennon are your quarterbacks you have to take one in the draft

  16. Sport Says:

Jamies is Jamies’ worst enemy. Period. If he can get out of his own way, which it sounds like he might be doing. The QB play need not be worried about.

    In BA I Trust!

  17. BigHog Says:

I’m not worried about the FAMOUS ONE because I remember a time when QB taken in the first round sat the bench at least in year one and yes times have changed and I’m so glad we decided to keep FAMOUS around even after his hiccups or throw ups or whatever you want to say! Can he turn it around on and off the field should be our only question. I’m all in on FAMOUS getting it done!! GO BUCS! GO FAMOUS!! GO SUHY!! POWER UP STEVIE THE TURK!!

  18. webster Says:

    Tye

There have been many “loud mouth” athletes. Mohammed ali, mayweather, michael irvin, deion sanders, randy moss, terrell owens, kobe etc. There are many more. All hall of famers. Btw, tyson is the one who said everyone has a plan until they are punched in the mouth. He too talked s#!+ and was a ‘
    “Loud mouth”
Since you brought up old sayings….here is one from the south….there is more than one way to skin a cat. That means every person dance to the beat of their own drummer.

  19. Rod Munch Says:

Cutting the balls off a gunslinger doesn’t make him a woman, it just makes a gunslinger with no balls.

  20. July Joe Says:

They drafted him because he’s a true gunslinger with elite arm talent and can lead a team to a 9-7 record with no run game, a bad O-Line and a bad defense … and because he’s not a QB like Mariota who needs a great O-Line, great run game and great defense to carry him (while he throws more INTs than TDs over an entire season) to the same 9-7 record in a weaker division.

THAT is why they drafted him and why they will offer him a contract extension provided he ends 2019 healthy.

  21. BrianBucs Says:

Isn’t this the same old stuff that we hear from Licht every year at this time?
“Jameis is a new man”, Jameis is starting to get it now”, “Things will be different for Jameis this year”, yada, yada, yada.
Licht had better be right this time or he and Winston will not be around here next year at this time.

  22. Rob Says:

This story is a great example of where Bucs fans have failed to ride the maturity of a QB, giving up way too early on so many quarterback over the years. I’m no Jason Licht apologist, he’s made a lot of mistakes and his record is what it is. I also have doubts about Jameis, but my eyes are seeing exactly what Licht is saying. Quarterbacks mature over time and think Jameis is on the verge of becoming great. With this coaching staff and his recognition of what we need to win (eliminate turnovers), I predict that Jameis enters the conversation as a Top 10 QB by season’s end. He’s only 25! If we give up on this guy, it would be a classic Bucs move that we’ll all regret.

  23. Tval Says:

I hear a bunch of “red flag” guys on here. Get out and stop talking football, while you’re behind. 🤣🤣😂😂😂 dear lord, it’s SOOOOO hard to hear losers talk about leadership. That’s what we get from folks who look up to an idiot like Trump.

  24. jjbucfan Says:

True Buc fans remember how embarrassing it was to watch Steve Young throw for the Bucs and run around just to have his head taken off. Turns out systems and coaching DOES matter, doesn’t it?

  25. Bucsfanman Says:

Like many here, I want to see it. We have listened and bought the hype for decades as Bucs fans.
I will say this. In his interviews with NFL Network yesterday, he sounded a lot more grounded than he has previously. I will simply reiterate what I have noted time and again: If Jameis throws for more than 35+ attempts, we are in trouble. We do NOT need him to carry the team. We need the offense to be more balanced. More balance=more success. Less Jameis is a good thing.
    Get it done Jameis.

  26. Bobby M. Says:

Winston calmed down from having a kid….His perspective has changed which is what you hope for any individual that decides to be a parent.

  27. Kobe Faker Says:

“You cant develop and build consistency with a QB without a offensive line

Without Lovie Smith and Jon Robinson, this Offensive line building plan has been a mess the last 4 years because of Gump”

    Kobe Faker

  28. The Buc Realist Says:

It will be apparent to move on!!!!!!! The game manager qb will not be worth the price tag on this team with all the obvious holes on the roster!!!!!! Why pay elite money only to watch sub par play and then say that the lying game manager just needs a great team around him to win??????????? And just like the fragile, lying, game manager qb, I no longer trust words from the qb, the GM and now the head coach!!!!!!!!!!!!! Time for a total rebuild!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep,

Joe, the video you posted of Jameis at practice recently does not jive with this “new man” crap. He is what he is. Groundhog Day. Again.

    Exactly.

If anything, this is a hint that Jameis is maturing (finally). Being a father tends to bring that about. A mature Jameis is a very good thing.

Please find evidence of that for us.

  34. Bucit Says:

As we all remember it was Joe who crowned him America’s quarterback and set up maybe an unreasonable expectation of him being the second coming of Brady. The crap team put around him since he got here has not helped. I don’t know if he’s going to flourish but I hope he does. Can you guys write a story that doesn’t have a BUT to make it always into a negative dribble.

  35. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

TVAL, you’re and i.d.i.o.t for trying to bring politics into football.

  36. D1 Says:

    July joe,

First , Jameis doesn’t have elite arm talent. He’s not in the top 3 throwing the ball. Sorry either He’s in the top 3 or not. Hes not in the top 10 so elite is something that sounds nice.

If Winston can win 9 games and season without defense, special teams and running….Explain 13 wins in 3 seasons. Can’t blame the line, defense, or kickers because you say it’s not necessary. For mariota it’s a requirement.
And oddly you overlooked the fact that mariota has met all his expectations and winston has not.

That’s your opinion not mine. Hint, a quick line about an amazing new tequila and a new post and you can get right back into the game.
Cause I am pretty sure the position you took is the opposite of your intent.

  37. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

Only took 56 starts, 76 turnovers, a 4 game suspension, 0 road wins over the last 2 seasons, 1 winning season and 1 “hassled” Uber driver for the former #1 pick to become a changed man….

Yeah I’ll believe it when I see it

  38. donuts Says:

Anytime Licht speaks publicly, I feel like I am watching a post political debate Q&A in the spin room.

  39. Rod Munch Says:

Loyaltotheend Section 312 – #4 in QBr last year, headed the NFL’s top passing offense, headed the best offense year in team history in yards and points.

Meanwhile defense has been worst in the league from 2015-2018.

But yeah, blame the record setting QB and not the last place defense. That’s what triggered morons do.

  40. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

    Rod Munch

The #1 passing offense that was spearheaded by Fitz…

Who Jameis was trying to emulate…

Before you cry or diving into stats Jameis has never looked as good at QB as Fitz did those first few weeks

  41. BUCnDaDDy Says:

Obviously!!!!!!!! Lol Keeping it 100% cause im real!!!!!! Hers a couple more just for good measure!!!!!!!!!!! What an idiot!
