Consider the past two seasons Bucs corners had to work each day in practice against arguably the deepest group of receivers and tight ends in all of football. Yet the defensive backfield was so disgusting you just wanted to freight train a priest because you had lost all faith in humanity.
Now anyone that has been able to watch a Bucs practice this summer has noticed something odd and strange on the practice field: a defense.
And America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston spoke today about practicing against a defense that actually challenges him.
“It really works out in our favor because we get to see every look in the book, and I think that’s what makes this defense so good with Coach [Todd] Bowles,” Jameis said. “He does a lot of different looks and it’s good for our receivers to see that, it’s definitely good for me to see that from a pressure standpoint, and our offensive line. So, it makes this whole team better.”
As Joe noted earlier today, the one thing difficult to figure out with Bucs playing Bucs is if a guy shines on the practice field, does that mean he’s making plays or that the guy(s) he’s going up against are sucking wind?
Joe *hopes* the offense is getting challenged. It sure seems as if they are. We will find out when the 49ers come to town if that has been the case, or if it is all a mirage.

Iron sharpens iron, but iron doesn’t sharpen the rotten wood that was the previous Bucs defenses.

We will find out before the Niners come, mostly if Week 3 of the preseason. It could very well be (at least partly) Winston feels challenged because he has a completely new offensive scheme, playbook and the whole nine yards, to get proficient in–with new coaches and their philosophies that are being learned (or not) little by little. And of course, if he’s NOT the same old turnover machine (remains to be seen) that keeps the Bucs DBs on the field running their backsides off, that can help with his offense too.

A few years ago at season opener, many wondered how any team could score of the Bucs defense that was just put in place. It took one drive and 7 points by the other team to remove further wondering.

What we’re see is good coaching which leads to less in game mistakes. The team that is better prepared and has less metal errors wins the close games.

It would help if Joe knew actually what to look for. It’s pretty evident Joe isn’t a talent evaluator but someone who’s eyes train on the obvious or the new shiny objects. Anybody with a true football acumen can tell if they’re getting better. Maybe the Joe’s could hire such a consultant that can breakdown film and can professionally comment on the players through a coaches lens instead of this glass half empty, glass half full hogwash. We require substance, and facts, not based on emotions.

Cast iron has a very weak tensile strength… meaning that it fractures before it bends. So, last year, the ridged scheme produced nothing but fractures and shards of metal that fatally wounded our team. Now we have a scheme with flexibility and strength.

Winston + average (15/16th ranked) scoring defense + bottom 3-5 run game and bottom 3-5 special teams = winning record while facing a top 5 difficult schedule.
Would be nice to see one year with healthy Winston + average or better overall team in defense/run game/special teams.

Good coaching goes a long ways in the NFL. If this team can cut down on mental errors, play fast and stay healthy, they can make some noise.

If you’re expecting ints to disappear you’re kidding yourself. JW throws ints it what he does BUT most importantly he absolutely balls out in the fourth qrt. There’s not a game he can’t win in the fourth if and only if he has a defense that can:
1. Hold a lead
2. Create a turnover
3. Get off the field on 3rd down
The kid is money in the 4th qrt regardless if he throw 2-3 or 4 picks in a game. Well maybe not 4.
Personally I’d like Jameis to focus on himself rather than playing cheerleader so much. Just focus and the team will follow, those that don’t will eventually get cut. But you don’t have to constantly pump dudes up my brother just focus man

I agree! I think Mr. Brooks should break down film on his segment. Unless of course the nfl copyright fees are so substantial that it makes it unrealistic.

Yeah, let’s just lower the bar. so that now Winston makes the grade. BS, LMAO at that comment.
The INTs need to disappear AND he needs to ball out in the 4th Qtr. Those are MINIMUM requirements of any franchise QB. As for “INTs it what he does”….he needs to do that somewhere else.

Running tally of Winston Apologist Excuses for his performance:
– It’s just what he does.
– His footwork sucks; he can fix that.
– His jump balls may be causing INTs; he can fix that.
– C’mon, even Tom Brady wants to be like Winston. No issue here!
– Mike Evans is hurt (thank goodness this too is a BS statement).
– We are challenging him so much that he fails (Leftwich Special)
– Joe torpedoed Winston—and Twitter PROVES it.
– It’s a new offense.
– His arm is getting too much work (BA Special).
– He tries too hard (every apologist and their mother).
– The D sucks.
– The O Line sucks.
– The run game sucks.
– The coaching sucks.
– He can’t identify with his coaches.
– The software sucks.
– The weather sucks.
– The recievers can’t run their routes.
– The receivers can’t catch.

I challenge you to go down the list you have created point by point. Check off each according these criteria. Which fall on coaching? Which fall on Winston’s shoulders alone?
Use these general ideas also. Coaching up the player(s) supporting Winston. Using the strength of each player within the scheme you present them. Let us all see your analysis of your points.
Then give us your answer to your final question.

After all these years you can’t throw out that term iron sharpens iron because of one losing team. You’d basically be saying all the players were trash and nothing at all was wrong with Mike Smith scheme which is why he’s out of the league, the scheme was pure garbage

The Bucs defense of the glory years didn’t make the offense any better.

@SenileSenior…no reason to do that. They are the excuses provided, period. Life isn’t fair. The guy that gets five years to prove his worth and overcomes others’ shortfalls gets the gold. Some guys would do the same thing, but due to their coaching or injury or one bad game, etc, they never get the shot. Some guys will keep getting chances over and over they haven’t earned. Do we have to go back and give Ryan Griffin x games to play becuase his coaches didn’t put him in to show what he can do, where Tom Brady’s coaches gave him a chance one day? No.
I can answer my final question of “Does he?” right now. “No,” Winston doesn’t offer those excuses. At least not yet. His agent will be the first to do so after he leaves.
No matter what the anlaysis is from who, his apologists will say it wasn’t his fault, that he needs more time. Guys within the last day right on this site are suggesting his INT problem won’t be fixed, and we need to just suck it up. Not!
