Calling Out Benenoch?

August 6th, 2019

Backup tackles in the spotlight.

Not that Joe didn’t enjoy former Bucs coach Dirk Koetter having a sharp comeback to a question, but Bucco Bruce Arians is an absolute delight.

Every day Arians has at least one good one-liner. Yesterday was no different.

And for the folks with blisters on their fingers from typing how rotten the Bucs offensive line is, this will relieve some of your pain.

Arians sort of teed off on his reserve offensive linemen yesterday and it was almost a veiled shot, if not at player personnel suits then surely at former Bucs offensive line coach George Warhop.

Arians is none too happy with his backup tackles.

“We’ve got to develop some more younger tackles,” Arians said.

Joe believes this may be a jab at pylon Caleb Benenoch. Last year Koetter and Warhop seemed bound and determined to put a square peg in a round hole and play Benenoch at guard. The experiment blew up in Koetter’s face and singed his eyebrows.

(Background: In training camp of 2017, Joe spoke with Benenoch for a story and Joe mentioned to him that he had heard from a Bucs type with clout that in a pinch he could also play guard. Benenoch was insulted and after scoffing told Joe, “Whoever the hell said that doesn’t know what he’s talking about. I’m a tackle.”)

As a tackle, Benenoch is serviceable, which is what you hope for in a backup. He may not be great at pass blocking but he’s OK at run blocking at tackle.

But when you make plays like Joe captured below when you are trying to protect the blindside of your franchise quarterback, a guy better shape up in a hurry or he may be out the door. Especially a guy like Benenoch who was drafted in 2016.

    Agree with 72.

    Ditto.

  5. OBP Says:

Caleb Benenoch is not an NFL quality offensive lineman, this has been well known for a long time. I sincerely hope BA rips off the band aid and gives him the walking papers he’s rightfully deserved for a long time.

Mean while the Falcons and Saints used early high round OL picks to protect and build

  8. tmaxcon Says:

Benenoch gets all the blame but that garbage below average RT he plays next to is equally bad but low standard bucfan has a mancrush on feel good stories so like so many bad buc players Dotson receives a free pass from low standard bucfan… not a single quality nfl starting offensive linemen on entire roster and yes that includes the popular but very average marpet

  9. Clw JB Says:

“When back ups get a chance they either get exposure or get exposed – today they got exposed”

unfortunately the entire roster is filled with backups and has been exposed for the better part of 2 decades

“look for vets bla bla” we are the team with the least amount of cap in the entire nfl. only 3 mil under. What do we need to watch for?

  13. zzbuc Says:

NO secret Benenoch is not a caliber player, but the real question here is….do we have many other options? Are we deep on OL? Well who is responsable for depth? Coaches or GM’s? We keep on adding players in different positions and everybody knows our OL is really poor…….So where is no surprise….
You don’t need to be einstein to realize that we have holes all around our roster, no depth at all, in cap hell, we have some talent but as not as much as everybody thinks, and we have to trust on BA magic in a very difficult Division.
Poor OL, big question marks on RB , corners and safty…….and we keep on blaming former coaches, when the biggest problem has been on the mangement for the last decade at the very least……..

  14. casual observer Says:

Almost certain that the Bucs will pick up an experienced OL come cut down time.

  15. DB55 Says:

It’s almost like I could be an nfl coach. Probably should start with pop warner though.

Bucs need to make cuts to free up cap space. Ryan Smith, VH3, amongst others need to go. Their salaries are more valuable than their production at this point.

I made a list a month or two ago, no time to re-do the list but there were about 7 players worth 13 mil in cap space that could easily be cut.

  16. The Buc Realist Says:

So who is getting coached up like all the sheep claimed????????? sounds like they are just getting replaced!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So much for the bucs fixing the “real” problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not long until we get to talk about who the new GM will be!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 wil reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. tmaxcon Says:

glazers have trained bucfan well to get excited by building a roster via other teams left overs, cast offs and failures… and you wonder why you get nut punched every year on the way to another basement title

  18. Buc4evr Says:

Thank God we finally have a HC that’s seeing the same things we are. BA is going to find guys that can run block before the season starts and improve the depth at O-line.

  19. Stanglassman Says:

You want to cut VH3? That take may not age well.

vh3bust is 100% bust and complete waste of time. you can’t fix nor coach short, slow, stupid or fragile… anyone counting on vh3 is either related to the little fella or pure fanboys living in fantasy land…. i believe that 813 bucs would be the Mayor of fantasy land….

  21. Jean Lafitte Says:

If he’s that bad then why put so much effort and time in him? There are other young lineman on the team that should be getting more first team reps. And why don’t they try Cappa at RT? It seems it would be easier to fill the RG position before the RT.

and btw, tackles make more than guards

  22. DCBucsfan Says:

little surprised that no names from the bottom depth or camp meat for any offensive linemen has ever came out so far at camp. Part of it is definitely the talent of the defensive unit but what strucks me the most is the coaches constantly ignoring this position and acquiring unnecessary position like TE , WR as if it’s needed. Lets hope this preseason live games clear up the glaring issues.

Veteran and camp meat OLmen are approaching their expiration date

  25. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “As a tackle, Benenoch is serviceable.” Nope, not even close. Serviceable at LT will get Jameis killed and flush our season right down the drain. Donovan is SERVICEABLE. Benenoch needs a new profession.

  26. BA FAN Says:

BA Coaching has already developed a RG out of Cappa who many of you labelled a bust. Licht brought in a Tackle who already knows BA’s system,
Watford, who has already shown he can play RT if needed so he is the backup for Dotson. We know Liedtke already outplayed D. Smith last year and can backup D. Smith. So now we just need BA to develop LeRibeus to backup Jensen (or keep E. Smith who can) and Zach Bailey to backup Cappa. We may need only to release Benenoch, and won’t have to hire a Veteran Lineman for Offense. We will know more this Friday when we play the Steelers.

  27. tmaxcon Says:

    BA FAN

dude that is laughable at best…. please remind me how many games BA has won so far and how many games Cappa has excelled in??? low standard bucfan giving free passes out like obama phones….

  28. tmaxcon Says:

i can’t stop laughing cappa has not even played in a pre season game under BA and you are giving credit for BA developing players LOL… OMG bucfan thank you so much for the daily entertainemnt

  29. BA FAN Says:

BA Coaching has already done wonders in turning around our Defense, bringing in a place kicker who can nail long field goals, and already teaching Jameis to pass for touchdowns in the red zone. Lately our Offense finally outplayed our Defense in practice. Jameis has already improved his deep throw accuracy and made lots of deep throws in practice, and we now have four RBs who are capable of starting. If you can’t recognize the difference from last year you are blind.

  30. Bill Says:

If the Yucks had any money, Ryan Schraeder and Jeremy Parnell would be RT bench options.

  31. casual observer Says:

I agree that the new coaches are doing great. Hope we see that Friday.

  32. BA FAN Says:

With Jameis we don’t need all first round picks on our OL like Dallas does. That is because Jameis has great escapability, is very dangerous and accurate on the run, and has good durability if he is hit. After all last year despite having Turnstyle D. Smith, Jenkins having a bad year, Dotson playing hurt, and helpless Benenoch at RT and all coached by Clueless Warhop, Jameis was number two in the NFL at winning first downs, and wracked up terrific yardage last year, and that was with a poor running game too. This year Dotson is well, Cappa is far better than Benenoch, and we have terrific OL Coaches, and four good running backs, and a defense full of playmakers who will give Jameis short fields, and he knows how to score in the red zone now, a strong defense which will give him a lot more opportunities on Offense, and won’t be playing far behind anymore, with a much improved kicking game, I expect Jameis will be a winning QB this year.

  33. LordCornelius Says:

Yeah it sounds like OT depth has been biggest concern more so than RG.

Hopefully Smith is fine and Dot supposedly healthier than he’s been in a while.

If this year isn’t a trainwreck and BA/Winston/company have success, next years draft needs to be entirely on lineman

OT/OG + DT/DE – all with first 4 round picks. And actually play the compensatory game this time vs signing Perriman and Pinion to eliminate what would have been 3rd & 4th round pick snext year.

  34. shots fired Says:

I truly hope that tmax and faker get testicular cancer from all their negativity. to spend so much time spreading your negativity and hate l”m gonna go ahead an assume your lives are miserable and unfulfilling, misery loves company. do the world a favor and KYS, we dont need you.

  35. ClwJB Says:

I got re-posted by tmaxcon, my life is now complete

and yes, I have been trained for 4 decades to fill with hope all off season only to get nut punched in about 35 of those years….

But I am a TRUE fan, so I happily keep coming back for more

    BUC OFF!

  36. BucEmUp Says:

There is clearly an idiot who doesnt know the difference between talent that hasnt been developed and someone who just aint worth a crap.

Bad coaching is responsible for BOTH of those. Arians hasnt even coached his first game yet and people are expecting him to make chicken noodle souo using chicked sh!t. Use you brain and stop being so bias.

  37. Curse of Gruden Says:

    tmaxcon Says:
“…unfortunately the entire roster is filled with backups and has been exposed for the better part of 2 decades.”

Sad to say, but it’s hard to argue with this statement. The Buc’s record proves it.

  38. Mike10 Says:

I’m really glad we drafted a kicker in the 5th instead of an OL.. especially learning now that the kicking battle is so close aka they’re similar

  39. teacherman777 Says:

Benenoch and Cappa have high centers of gravity and skinny legs.

Neither one of them are guards.

They are both backup tackles. Cappa should just train as a backup LT and Benenoch should backup RT this year.

We need to sign a legit RG and cut Leidtke.

Licht drafted backup lineman with zero potential as NFL starters.

    Accept it. And move on.

  40. LordCornelius Says:

“So who is getting coached up like all the sheep claimed????”

Per all reports since I haven’t been there and just off the top of my head:

-Alex Cappa holding down RG spot and doing pretty solid, vs being a complete non factor with prior coaching staff

-Ronald Jones making plays every day, vs being a complete non factor with prior coaching staff

-Noah Spence making plays every day, vs being a complete non factor with prior coaching staff

-Lavonte David was having his best camp in a while up to injury compared to under prior staff

-VHIII having his best camp by far under new staff vs any camp under the old staff

-Vita Vea looking like a beast this year in year 2 although I think that happens under any staff

In general our OT depth is what looks bad in camp, but no Bucs fan or “sheep” ever said “BA is going to fix our 3rd and 4th string OTs”… So not sure why you decided to pounce on a thread about 3rd and 4th string OTs.

    Another day in bizarro world.

    GO BUCS

  41. LordCornelius Says:

Also most bucs fans / or “sheep” have pounded the table for O-line help all offseason.

Not sure wtf site you follow but you are delusional as hell about everything at this point.

    GO BUCS

  42. JimmyJack Says:

Sounds to me that Arians is specifically talking about Benechot. He is first in line on the depth charts at tackle and all reports have been bad whenever Caleb plays with the ones.

I noticed yesterday in the notes that they used Bozer(great jersey name) instead of Benechot to take Donavon Smith’s spot. I also noticed that the offense performed well and not as much QB pressure as when Caleb was in.

This will be interesting to follow and defiently worth noting who gets more looks on Friday Night.

    GO BUCS!!!!

  43. JimmyJack Says:

Lord C I thought the same thing about all them players when I read that.

Some people just like some much they believe themselfs.

From listening to reports a few names you could add to the list is Carlton Davis who is quietly having a good camp & Dare(the RB with the long last name) who is also flashing.

Man you better go get some shades cause the future is looking bright.

Let the Bucs get good & then we can be great.

    GO BUCS!!!!

  44. JimmyJack Says:

    Lie not like***

  45. Bucsfanman Says:

    Ah, the great Benenoch!!!
Hey, you want to know what effectively mitigates a pass-rush and bad O-line play?
P.S.- Screens, quick passes, and an effective run-game!

DB55- I hope Gholston was at the top of that list.

  46. JimmyJack Says:

Teacherman we need to sign a RG? Why can’t we at least see Cappa in a real game on Friday before we replace him?

  47. LordCornelius Says:

    @JJ

Exactly. There are OGs and OTs in all shapes and sizes. Technique is king for O-line

  48. BucsFan727 Says:

Tmax is not a Bucs fan. Hes a troll. Go back to your team troll. Your still here? GET!

  49. YoungBucs Says:

Man some arm chair coaches and GM’s on here overlook the fact that this “poor o-line” was number 1 in the LEAGUE in passing last year! Not the Pats, Not Spittsburg, Not Kansas or the dirty Birds ect. the horrible Buc’s numero uno. Let’s see at least a quarter of starter play before getting your panties in a bunch. We need upgrades badly just for sake of a run game but, let’s not act like chicken little and the sky is falling before a preseason game good lord people.

  50. Wesley Says:

Just cut the guy already, he’s terrible.

  51. teacherman777 Says:

  53. Ship Thief Says:

Tmax has a set of high standards that shield him from a very scary series of nut punches that he believes could be endless.
This is a source of constant fear, but he is so smart that he is almost guaranteed success and accolades.

    He is very unique.

Just imagine what you could build with his critical thinking and creativeness.
