The clear No. 1 right guard speaks

BY ZACHARY SEIFTER
Manbeast JoeBucsFan intern

Through one week, there has been no change at all.

Alex Cappa is the Bucs’ starting right guard.

He has been there since spring practices, and his name on the depth chart has not budged once.

And he feels good about it.

At least, that’s what Cappa told JoeBucsFan.com after Friday night’s practice. Cappa said he feels the competition is, “Going great!” He then expanded on how he felt after Week 1 of training camp.

Cappa was confident and peaceful discussing the right guard job. That’s probably because there has been nobody else on the depth chart that has been anywhere close to good enough to challenge him.

“It’s good, man,” Cappa said. “It’s been a good camp, it’s been competitive, it’s been fun and we’re just working to get better.”

Cappa hasn’t stood out by being incredibly bad so that’s good news. In fact, he hasn’t really been noticeable at all.

For an offensive lineman, that’s a good thing.

Everyone on the 53 man roster cannot be an All Pro.

  2. tmaxcon Says:

scary scary scary bad offensive line….. NO tackles NO guards and Center who get’s tossed around like a dem intern named Monica

  3. Bucshot Says:

Hopefully Cappa just needed a year to get his body right and adjust to the speed of the NFL. He has the talent and mentality to be a quality starting guard, so hopefully he can become that quickly.

  4. #1bucsfan Says:

Ali Marpet is one of the best guards in the league T M A X I P A D. once again you are wrong But hey that’s nothing new haha

  5. firethecannons Says:

that is awesome, maybe this kid can stick! he does not have a durability history either.
    tmax–monica?

  6. OneBuc55 Says:

    You’re right Joe..

In the case of offensive linemen, no news is good news…I’d love it if he was noticably dominating the guy across from him but I’ll settle for steady and solid…

  7. BigHog Says:

This o/line will not be dominant but it must be grimy and nasty and fight for every inch on every play! GO BUCS! GO FAMOUS! GO SUHY!

  8. casual observer Says:

It would be great if Cappa can do it. A solid and reliable RG would be outstanding. And a bit unexpected.

  9. Bird Says:

Maybe our biggest question mark on the field – right guard

If Cappa can’t do it in the preseason , Bucs need to give up a draft pick to a team and get that player up to speed quickly.

Jameis needs time and a clean pocket

  10. Getaclue Says:

Okay….. and who has actually moved on the depth chart?

  11. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

LMAO! All we have been hearing about is about the OL getting absolutely TRUCKED day in and day out.

  12. BA FAN Says:

It is all in the professional development of Cappa. You will recall that Clueless Warhop didn’t develop a single Offensive Lineman and that is why Cappa did not look good at RG last year when he was finally tried there at RG when they wouldn’t put up with Warhop’s pet Benenoch goofing up there week in and out so Warhop finally had to try Cappa there, knowing that he had no training at Guard at all. I posted often that “Warhop is the Culprit”. It was obvious because he could have tried Veteran Guard Liedtke there knowing he outplayed even D. Smith two games in Preseason with no training at LT. But that would have showed up Benenoch and the press would have blamed Warhop for leaving Benenoch in for so many games!

  13. JimmyJack Says:

I will be so happy if they can develope this kid. Waited 3 years for the last staff to develope just one OL player. Any player any position……And they gave us not one guard not one tackle & not one center.

Now if Bruce and his staff can do what the other staff couldn’t our GM won’t be forced to go and spend another $10M for another OL in free agency………….Developing is how you truely build a team.

  14. casual observer Says:

Agree with BA. Warhop was a big problem. Hope the new OL coach is the answer. I suspect he might be.

  15. Rod Munch Says:

Cappa is God awful in Madden, he personally got me sacked like three times in the Carolina game, I think all of them were from McCoy, who had a strip sack and a return TD.

They also think Smith is the worst starting LT in football, and Jensen is also terrible. If Madden is a sim, and the o-line is actually as bad as it is in that game, then you can never blame the QB for bad play, or the RBs for bad play, because they’re terrible, nearly unplayable on All Madden level.

Marpet is average at best and nowhere near one of the best…. low standard bucfan proving thier ignorance once again by falling for mediocrity

I understand the truth is hard to accept but thank you for the kind words

  20. tmaxcon Says:

    The Fighting Schiano’s

Is it really hate or simply jealousy of my high standards and the fact I’m never wrong….

  23. Alanbucsfan Says:

If the OLinemen know who they are supposed to block, it will be an improvement over last year

  24. Clay Travis Says:

My genius BFF @magadude knows that good QBs do NOT need any help from the O-Line or run game or special teams or defense or coaching staff to make the playoffs … THAT is why Aaron Rodgers has gone 36-0 the last two seasons and JAY-MISS has not.

  25. Irishmist Says:

We might be able to use him to our advantage when we play the Polecats. You know McCoy will be salivating to run through this guy. When McCoy inevitably beats him, have O.J. coming across behind the line for a vicious trap block and let RoJo run through the hole to pay dirt.

  26. tmaxcon Says:

    Irishmist

You are Bringing jokes today…. when was the last time cancer93 beat anyone unless it was for ice cream or a labia replacement

  27. Rod Munch Says:

Irishmist – The idea of McCoy going up against Cappa is pretty scary, but hopefully he’s taken some big steps forward and can be more than a big ugly mean guy speed bump. I hope they have a plan – or maybe Carolina is dumb and has McCoy line up over Marpet.

  28. teacherman777 Says:

Cappa will WHIFF on McCoy every snap.

Quickest DT first step (mostly bc he likes avoiding hits)

But still, McCoy will embarrass Cappa all game.

  29. Buc4evr Says:

O- line sucks. A new coach isn’t going to make much difference and Cappa is just another weak link. Bucs are going to be sorry that there was absolutely no focus on improving the o-line this year.
