Arians Changes Tune On QB Work Rate

August 1st, 2019

Tuesday comments from Bucco Bruce Arians to NBC Sports insider Peter King continue to clash with what Arians said back at the NFL Owners Meetings in Phoenix.

The subject was America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.

“He has probably too big of a work ethic. He works too hard. I gotta slow him back down. Take some time off,” Arians told King in a serious tone.

This is the same thing Bucs coaches were saying in very early May. So why is Arians still going there? Joe wonders wonder why things haven’t seemed to change.

In March, Arians raved about Jameis’ long hours, so Joe asked if there is a limit and whether there’s a burnout point. Arians (like his predecessor) didn’t think that was an issue or a consideration. Arians smiled and cited working with Peyton Manning who was simply unrelenting in his attention to detail and round-the-clock drive, he said.

Yet on July 30, Arians is still talking about Jameis working too hard.

It’s all a bit perplexing. It sounds like coaches are struggling to keep Jameis on their desired schedule. Perhaps it’s time for Arians to adjust how he guides Jameis?

Arians adjust how he guides Jameis? Not for an instant. Jameis still has to prove he is a franchise caliber QB, worthy of a big contract for the next few years. Arians has been to this dance before. In fact, if Arians can’t help Jameis get to this next level, Jameis might be going the Tebow route, trying to hook on in MLB. Jameis… time to shake out anything between the ears keeping you from doing exactly what Arians tells you…or we will move on and choose a QB with our first round pick next year. And good luck with the MLB thing.

Wow coach changed mind about some minor detail from 5 months ago after first taking the job. This should be national news my goodness 😁

From the things I’ve heard BA say I’m of the thinking that he wants Jameis to stop throwing so much. Watching tape of his throwing mechanics will help him as well. But going out and slinging the ball around and getting a ton of extra reps with bad mechanics isn’t good. Hopefully if he plays well this year they put a clause in the contract that he can’t work with the guy he’s been with for all these years during the off season. Can’t remember his name.

  4. Buccaroo Says:

The difference is probably that Winston’s performance is affected by absorbing too much information at once. Where Manning is more like a sponge and he doesn’t regress or get bogged down from information overload.

  5. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Jameis is a hard worker…always will be. He’ll never change that aspect of himself.

And I would not have it any other way.

  6. BucEmUp Says:

Hes right, Jameis really.doesnt need to do anything more than he has veen doing. With a good kicker, good defense and good in game adjustments from the coaching they will win twice the amount of games as they have been with Jameis just being Jameis. He will finally be able to play without feeling the need to be superman.

    Simple math, ITS COACHING!!!!!

  7. AKickInTheBucNuts Says:

All BA is doing is making an “in-game adjustment”.

    And Thank God for that.

  8. NOSBOS Says:

Funny thing the QB position. Everyone says the south is the hardest division because of the QBs in it. I beg-to-differ,cam body breaking down and has always been at the bottom of the league in completion percentage of passes 20 yard or more. Look it up. matthew pretty good but what would he really be without a Juilo… Not to mention kookie cutter is his OC again that means no rush attack. Good luck with that. Then there’s drew drew,I listened to a sport talk program that indicated after the first four games of last season his numbers all steadily declined the rest of the way. Then later in the day I caught a piece by colin cowherd who says he doesn’t feel the aints will make the playoffs this year mainly due to drew looking old and tired the end of the way last year and max unger retiring, forcing them to start a rookie center. Good luck dealing with Kong Suh and Darf Vea with that.

Bruce please get Peyton to come to OBP for a couple days and all you guys can workout together.

Raceto10 … LMAO. Joe tends to read a LOT more into the smallest, most innocent comments than most anyone I can remember.

Joe reminds me a lot of this one pilot who was in one of the fighter squadrons I was in ‘back in the day’. In the briefings before each flight, we’d play what I called the ‘What If Game’. You know, What If this happens inflight; how will you respond? What if there’s smoke in the cockpit for instance, what do you do? That’s Joe … Mr. What If. What if Jameis works too hard? What if Jameis plays baseball? What if Jameis fumbles too much this year? What if? What if?

I sometimes wondered IF that pilot I mentioned earlier would ever be ready to go out and actually FLY the aircraft if left to his own druthers. i sometimes thought that he’d sit in the briefing room 24 hours a day going through the ‘What Ifs’. It’s too easy to ‘over-think’ things and miss the joy of actually playing the game (or flying). It’s little wonder why so many owners, GMs, coaches, etc are quite calculating & hesitant to say TOO MUCH to the media. They often say the littlest things in the spur of the moment that the media will analyze and re-analyze then re-re-analyze forever & ever. I wonder if the Boston media does this to Bill Belicheck or the Bama media with Nick Saban. My guess is ‘Not on your life; they’d throw them out of the room after giving them a very dirty look’.

JW already works hard…..gotta work smarter not harder….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  12. Pittsshore Says:

It’s pretty simple guys; after a week of practice with JW Coach Arians is figured out that he got served a sheot sandwich (JW) at the Bucs team cafeteria.

  13. #1bucsfan Says:

Some people act like #3 is the worst QB ever to play the game. If he cuts his TO in half. The defense plays well like a defense instead of running away from offenses like they are the plague, coaches actually develop players unlike the past several years an our kicker makes kicks then this team will be in the playoff hunt.

  14. Rod Munch Says:

Winston, #4 in QBr last year, lead the best offense in team history and the top passing offense in the NFL.

He had a bad road game against an AFC opponent in bad weather, remove that game and he’s #1 in QBr. Additionally most of his turnovers happened when the defense, which was the worst in the NFL, had put the team down by multiple scores and Winston had to force the ball to try to get the team back into the game.

Those pretending Winston isn’t a good to great QB are 100% fake news, just boring dullards who will hopefully shove their heads in a lawn mower.

  15. DooshLaRue Says:

    GRRRRRRRRRRRR!

    Munchie is a mad man.

    GRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Leave his hero alone or suffer the Fancy Man wrath!

    GRRRRRRRRRRRR!

  16. Buc1987 Says:

    lol Good stuff Rod!

  17. BAFan Says:

The last practice the Offense started getting a lot better, including Jameis. They are still having some problems with some of the exotic blitz packages that our Defense is hitting our OL and Jameis with. That is all about forcing the OL to communicate and learn how to stop blitzes, and see how Jameis will play under such heavy pressure. So what if BA looks at the results of the first three practices and decided to go in a different direction with Jameis. Whatever he is doing it is now beginning to work. Obviously what works for one player in developing a player may not be the right tact with another. Let BA work!

  18. Bucki40 Says:

Last year Offensive stats were a joint effort between Fitzpatrick and Winston. Problem with Winston is all the long hours and hard work has corrected his mistake prone mentality. At some point the Bucs have to realize that if all the Hard work and film study doesn’t translate to wins it time to move on!

  19. Rod Munch Says:

Bucki40 – QBr shows he’s not mistake prone, he’s a gunslinger who wants to win. If you want a QB who will throw the ball out of bounds on the last play of a game when you need a hail mary, I hear Mike Glennon is available.

QBr, in case you don’t know, accounts for things like when an INT is thrown, what is the situation, is it a hail mary or is it an INT when it matters. Outside of the Cinny game, which he was terrible, he really didn’t have any other bad games. He had some mediocre games, like in Baltimore, but then again Godwin dropped a bunch of good passes, they were flat drops. Speaking of which, I like Godwin a lot, but man does he stink when he can’t wear his gloves when it’s wet – I hope he spent all offseason working on that.

Anyways blaming the offense for losing, when they were the best passing team and #3 overall and set all the team records for offense – when you had the worst defense in team history is 100% nonsense. Everyone knows why this team lost last year, it was because the defense was historically bad. Give the team even a 20th ranked defense last year and they’re fighting for a playoff spot, if not in the playoffs.

  20. July Joe Says:

Jameis has an ELITE work ethic.

Jameis despite being on a terrible team was also ELITE under pressure (#1 passer rating in the entirely NFL under pressure) and ELITE on 3rd downs (#1 in conversion percentage and #4 in passer rating).

Jameis has not had even close to an ELITE roster (O-Line, defense, running backs or special teams).

Bruce Arians is an ELITE coach.

I trust BA and Jameis to figure it out but if they don’t, it won’t be because Jameis wasn’t working hard enough, that’s for sure.

  21. Clay Travis Says:

    Shut up July Joe!

My friend, I mean friendS, as in plural, more than one, yes friendS, will not let you get away with educating Bucs fans with truth. You may have truth and statistics but we have “feelings” and “hatred” and those two emotions are more powerful than any truths you can spew!

We don’t want JAY-MISS and his kind in Tampa and we will run him out of Tampa, you just watch!

We’re all doing great kid, no one can touchus, yeah!

WE will WIN for WE are LEGION!!!
