Ugly Day For OL
July 29th, 2019Joe would hate to be the guy who launders Bucs practice pants. Because the Bucs’ offensive line has been filling them up like a sick infant.
Yesterday, Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians spoke about how the offensive line “crap their pants” they played so poorly.
Well, the Bucs defense dominated the offensive line so much today the Bucs are going to have to hose off the turf inside the Glazer Shed like municipal crews in New Orleans hose down Bourbon Street each morning at daybreak from all the previous day’s mule droppings.
Joe is not one to constantly rag on the offensive line for everything from the Ebola virus to North Korea testing missiles. In fact, Joe has more often than not defended the offensive line from the habitual hollering and scapegoating of Bucs fans.
Not today.
The Bucs’ defense simply worked over the offensive line. Time and again. It didn’t matter. Running plays, passing plays, the offensive line was getting swarmed.
Granted, Bucs left tackle Donovan Smith didn’t practice a whole lot because he has a nicked up Achilles (he did rag doll Noah Spence once). Alex Cappa played a lot at right guard. It wasn’t pretty. And Demar Dotson sat out on what Arians called a veteran day off.
Even when the Earl of Watford was on the field, it didn’t help.
“I feel like everybody’s coming together,” Bucs nose tackle Vita Vea said of the defensive front.
Even Lawrence Taylor Devin White got into the act. He blitzed America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, once, got in his face and forced Jameis into a dump off pass that was picked.
Yes, Joe knows it is still July. But if the Bucs’ offensive line is getting owned this bad by a defensive front-seven nobody expected to be special, what happens when the Bucs face a team that does have a respected front-seven?

But Joe has always said the awful run game and inconsistent pass protection isn’t the o lines fault…
Joe might be eating crow just like he did when he pimped Johnny Manziel as a good qb and labeled Dominik a “Rockstar”
July 29th, 2019 at 8:04 pm
Hey Joe’s and Ira, I would like to meet you guys, SF opener, 109 row X
July 29th, 2019 at 8:04 pm
Nope. Saying the Bucs offensive line, down two starting tackles, is getting eaten up in the first two padded practices.
Don’t think Joe ever wrote the Bucs have a young John Hannah at right guard.

You can sure tell who it is yelling after the play, my guess is #28. Is All Time Low, and Pierce the Veil having a concert in Tampa?
July 29th, 2019 at 8:04 pm
This is what happens when an NFL organization haven’t been able to properly develop oline depth for a period of time and mismanaged the cap so poorly that they couldn’t even sign adequate oline men to come in and compete. Another indictment on Jason Licht.

Benenoch is a dud. If we r depending on him for protection, we r better off getting Barney Fife. Benenoch has lead feet n is soft as tissue. I can c him b n bullied in first game by Nick Bosa n later on by urs truly JJWatts. We need to make some trades possibly Brate, JEvans, Hargreaves for a proven lineman.

Joe,Thank you for your report.
July 29th, 2019 at 8:16 pm
Wow! Under 2.5 seconds, hey at least he got a hand on him, progress….
This is where the excitment for this year halts and fear of this whOa-Line come into play.
July 29th, 2019 at 8:17 pm
Two days of practice does not tell us much. In fact, history shows a couple of 4-0 preseasons followed by some really awful seasons.
The question is are they getting better over a period of time?
July 29th, 2019 at 8:19 pm
Hopefully, Bucs can find some OL castoffs from other teams during the cuts. Cappa sounds like a project at best and the depth is also questionable. Pre season will highlight the deficiencies on the line. Another example on why Licht is such a horrible GM.
July 29th, 2019 at 8:20 pm
Gotta somehow get OL help.
July 29th, 2019 at 8:22 pm
Not the high priced offensive line!!
July 29th, 2019 at 8:25 pm
Hmm it’s almost as though the section of the the fan base that’s been bemoaning and groaning about the Oline, and demanding an overhaul, were right..
Including Bruce Arians when he first arrived who specifically mentioned it needed an upgrade at the owners meeting if I recall correctly.
Now the only option we have is a trade. I’d trade a 2020 2nd and 2021 3rd to the Eagles for Brandon Brooks, or attempt to were I the GM of the team. Then again if I were the Gm I’d have traded up in the 2nd to draft Will Hernandez last season and we wouldnt be in this
This Oline is the position group that has most potential to derail this season.
July 29th, 2019 at 8:28 pm
Joe why did you write an article about the oline but posted a picture of Gerald McCoy? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
July 29th, 2019 at 8:28 pm
Anyone got Trent Williams’ number?
July 29th, 2019 at 8:31 pm
Okay, so only 3 of 5 starters practiced, and another only for a few plays, and suddenly the whole line sucks?
July 29th, 2019 at 8:38 pm
You can make excuse after excuse Bonzai, but the Olinez specifically its run blocking, has been atrocious.
The fact that they are getting worked over by an improved and more dominant Vea, and the always impactful Ndamukong Suh, plus a bunch of crazy blitzes crafted by TB, really comes as no surprise to me or anyone with a lick of sense.
July 29th, 2019 at 8:44 pm
OL definitely biggest concern this year IMO. No point in all these weapons if the QB doesn’t get time or we’re in bad situations due to RBs getting hit behind the line / sacks
That said other observations I’ve read have said Dot/Jensen/Marpet all been looking solid while Cappa looks improved altho still a work in progress. I’ll personally have to wait till preseason to judge and that should give us a good reality check of both lines
July 29th, 2019 at 8:53 pm
An old wise man named Ted Webb once said that you can’t make chicken salad out of chicken $hit.
July 29th, 2019 at 8:54 pm
I bet half the teams in nfl are inquiring about Trent Williams.
Bucs should join the group.
July 29th, 2019 at 9:07 pm
I feel like the Bucs have totally ignored the elephant in the room in the draft and off season. Gump has done nothing to improve the issue and has ignored free agents readily available for a div 3 player. As I have said before there are SEC UNDFAs better than Cappa. The lousy O-line is why we have no running game and will eventually get Winston injured. Are the Bucs so stupid that they continue to keep the same lousy players on the O-line year after year ? Gump needs to go.
July 29th, 2019 at 9:19 pm
This is what happens when licht tries to get cute with drafting a small time college player like cappa with a premium pick… or draft a kicker in the second… or 10 db’s in the first 3 rounds… hard to build a line when you don’t draft linemen 🤷🏻♂️
July 29th, 2019 at 9:28 pm
Why is Benenoch starting, what about the other kid?
July 29th, 2019 at 10:51 pm
OR, nobody in the NFL has offensive line depth (down two tackles), and Joe massively, massively underrated both the new defensive players, the improvement of the returning players, and Todd Bowles’ scheme. Maybe just maybe Jason Licht gave Todd better talent than Mike Maccagnan ever did.
July 29th, 2019 at 11:05 pm
Benenoch is being played at OT with the first team to decide if he can be serviceable with further development. If the answer is no they need to spend their time moving Cappa over to OT now to develop to cover both Tackle positions, and concentrate on developing Zach Bailey and Veteran Guard Liedtke to play RG. I felt Holcomb did a decent job at RT last year and could compete with Cappa to backup that position. LeRibeus needs to be groomed to backup Jensen. If we still need help we could do a trade for an older RG. We could cut Evan Smith and use his cap space to get an older RG.
July 29th, 2019 at 11:32 pm
5-11 GM builds 5-11 team & has ZERO cap dollars to improve his horrible personnel moves
July 30th, 2019 at 1:13 am
Joe, our starting tackles wouldnt even be 2nd stringers on most teams. Dotsons knee didnt look fully healed or he didnt trust it. He got beat on to many inside moves. And are left tackle who rag dolled Spence. I heared it was Spence who rag dolles Smith. Knocked him on his axx. If D Smith plays hard he will have a good chance of getting hurt. Last I thoughy he was trying not to get hurt. He shure as hell didnt earn that 2yr extension. He got it by default. We cant fix everything in one year. The oline is this teams weak link. Plus no depth. Caugh caugh Trent Williams .Licht make a move.
July 30th, 2019 at 1:27 am
We dont have the hogs up front we need a gaurd at minimum. To help are weak axx center not get nocked back. Thats why pulling guards was really stupid last year. The dang center would get knocked back in to the pulling gaurd. Sure hes great at man handling some LBs but he needs help from the gaurds. We only got one starter.Plus Jamies can step up in the pocket when are tackles get beat on the speed rush every other play. Build the F N line Tampa. Scrape up your dam penneys and make some moves or it will be a long season for Jamies and the RBs.
July 30th, 2019 at 6:27 am
This should definitely be something you follow closely Joe. Since we got the same OL coach as the one that almost ruined Andrew Luck’s career
