Basic Fundamentals
July 27th, 2019Man, Charley Casserly hit the nail on the head.
The former general manager of the Redskins was at One Buc Palace yesterday working for NFL Network. His colleague, Ian Rapoport, was there as well.
In this video Casserly did for Twitter, Casserly goes over what he believes is wrong with Jameis. It’s an easy fix, he said.
In short, Casserly said Jameis’ fundamentals, footwork and shoulder placement are all screwed up. In particular, Casserly said Jameis has a habit of leaning back when he throws long and dips his right shoulder while raising his left shoulder. This, said Casserly, tends to cause the football to sail on quarterbacks.
And you know what? Casserly is dead-solid perfect on the shoulder issue. Joe has all kinds of photos in his files of Jameis raising his left shoulder up while dropping his right shoulder.
Now how the hell can Casserly, who comes to One Buc Palace maybe once a year, notice this and former Bucs quarterback coach, Mike Bajakian, never seemed to?
My thoughts on Jameis Winston and what he needs to improve upon and how he can do it. @Buccaneers @nflnetwork pic.twitter.com/1kMfbfhkjk

Maybe they told him and his muscle memory kicks in when live bullets start flying? And with all the talking heads and experts watching Winston no one has brought this up yet?

Great pointers to help Jameis but there is one other that has to do with Jameis mentally that BA needs to recognize and fix. The reason Jameis was often ineffective at the start of games is he is over the top emotional at the start of games that causes him to think too much and his adrenalin to pour over and ruin his passing. He needs to be listening to soothing music prior to starting practice and games and trust his coaches and his famous hard work and overpreparation and just visualize himself succeeding going through scripted first plays and scoring touchdowns and stay positive no matter what happens.
He needs to read works by the Psychologist who guided the formation and training of the famous USA Ice Hockey Team that beat the Famous Russian Team in Olympic Hockey and sparked the movie Miracle on Ice.

The problem is that Jameis continues to work out with George Whitfield . Most NFL teams hate that guy. Anybody who watches Jameis knows his mechanics are flawed . It all starts starts with the footwork.
July 27th, 2019 at 10:58 am
Just dont understand how Jameis was so damn good in college with funky mechanics…
July 27th, 2019 at 11:00 am
Its not just Mike Bajakan it would be Jimbo Fischer, Dirk Koetter, Clyde Christiansen, Monken, Byron, QB Whisperer and QB guru George Whitfield. So not one of those people who are “hands on” with jameis EVER noticed it or jameis just doesnt get it? Or maybe they should hire casserly

AwShbucs – in college the throwing windows are larger. With a better team (like FSU had) the WRs often have a great advantage over the DBs and can open more to create large throwing windows.
In the NFL, that’s not the case. The windows are smaller and close much faster.
July 27th, 2019 at 11:27 am
If some of you folks would listen to BA words you would know that this is precisely one of the major things that have been addressed for Winston. They have been working on his footwork.
Another thing BA is trying to do is rein in Winston extracurricular workouts. He is being directed to listen to BA and staff in order to “stay on message”.
Listen carefully and “read between the lines” when needed.

Just a thought about the notion of decision-making wrt his interceptions
when he did noy see the underneath coverage …
if he did not see the underneath coverage then the decision to throw was not a bad decision … what needs to be improved is his field vision assuming of course if he sees the under coverage he won’t throw.
therefore not decision-making problem; field of vision problem
July 27th, 2019 at 11:34 am
perhaps the virtual reality program can be assist in improved field of vision

Good info,
Charley did mention that he was watching film of last year. So we will see if any of the things are or will be addressed by the current staff.

I thought he was coached well by koetter? Fundamentals were never a conversation and after 5 years here we are saying fundamentals need work. Of course they did we got a real coach and he admitted as much. So guess we’ll find out what they worked on. Last year they were screwed up so we’ll find out if he was working smart or just working hard for nothing

I respectfully disagree. And no, I am NOT saying I know more than Charley Casserly.
Just for fun, I searched “Drew Brees throwing long” on Google.
The first result, dated 5/17/17 from Performance Lab of California has a nice video showing stop action and slow motion of his release on long throws.
Human mechanics says we generate power through our “core”, the large muscles of our legs, buttocks and paraspinal muscles. Any thrower, pitcher or QB shifts their weight onto a bent leg behind them, which tilts their pelvis backward, which means the front shoulder necessarily is higher than their back shoulder. Then as the throw begins the player pushes off that back leg, uncoils that pelvic tilt, and follows through with their torso and shoulders, especially on LONG throws which require more than just a flick of the wrist or elbow.
Watch the video.

I thought there would be a difference because of Brees height. The analyst soon mentioned this at great length. My recollection of Philip Rivers passing motion
is that he stand tall and releases the ball. Probably somewhat similar for Brady.
AT 6 foot 5 inch Jameis should not need the same technique Brees uses to get the ball over the defensive line,IMO . At any rate Jameis has a unique windup
and these extra motions require extra time. The way Chris sims described one
aspect of it was Jameis also twists his torso back as he prepares to throw long.

@Bob in Valrico:
I thought they commented on his release point, which is at the top of his throw with an overhand motion, which I agree is due to his relatively shorter stature. They even commented that he was up on his toes at that release point. But if you look closely at the slow motion video, his rearward shoulder is clearly lower than his forward shoulder due to pelvic tilt, and the slight bend in his rear leg. All long throws require this in my opinion.
I believe the ball sails on Jameis sometimes due to his release point, and not his shoulder tilt. If your release point is at the 12 o’clock position, the ball goes only forward with some drop due to gravity. IMHO, these throws are by far the best that Jameis makes, i.e. fastball to a spot. If your release point is too late, the throw will be low, and possibly too low, when assisted by gravitational drop. If your release is early enough (before the 12 o’clock position) in the shoulder rotation, the ball will have at least some upward component, which may be quite desirable at times (putting some “air” under a long throw so a receiver can adjust his speed to run under it). Some of the best throws are these little “humpbacked liners, that settle into the receiver just over the outstretched hands of the underneath coverage. In fact, the longest range of a projectile (neglecting wind resistance) is when it is launched at a 45 degree angle to the horizontal.

joe’s trying to get nominated for AARP man of the year with employing one of those types, plus all the quotes and posts from the near dead irrelevant has beens that the game and life has passed by like casserole casserly, dinosaur gil brandt, polian, the local greatest salesman in history for getting the unqualified dungy the clown enshrined to the hall of mediocrity and nice guys… Joe I appreciate a man who strives for public service…. I’ll submit you as a nomination to AARP….
On a positive note, if you climate change warriors really wanted a permanent fix to global warming you’d address the fact there is too many irrelevant old people. the only true solution is population control set a maximum age 68 fixes climate change and Social Security in one quick swoop… VOTE AOC!!!!! another positive of eliminating the washed up is it will open up housing for all the homeless ruining the cities across America. so many other positives too, just think of the lower car insurance rates because the roads will be virtually accident free and a 4 way stop would flow smoothly for once… solution’s not fluff people.

Great post. Congrats!

So, putting “tmaxcon” into a post goes into instant moderation?
But putting all of those proper names into a post above it doesn’t?
Joe, is that you?

Without getting into the physiology of which I am no expert, Jameis release varies to the point that he sometimes looks off balance. ,his shoulders are as you described and almost level at times. I believe Arians has said he wants to clean that up.
By the way that video of Brees was interesting how hard Brees has to work to get the ball off to get over the line and and to its target.
July 27th, 2019 at 3:14 pm
Since older people are said to get wiser as they age. All I can say is abra cadabra ,I wish TMAx was 68!
July 27th, 2019 at 3:24 pm
IT appears so. In moderation is just a little bit better than lost in space as one of my post was yesterday.

Hi again, Bob!
Three great posts. Every athlete needs good balance to perform consistently.
Re #2: Two more years for me before tmax turns me into Soylent Green, or in my case probably Soylent Rust.
Re #3: I actually think that tmaxcon is a figment of Joe’s imagination.

Funny as hell lowering to all these QB coaches on JoeBucsFan’s website. When did you all step away from the game? With all your knowledge you figure you still would be on a staff somewhere…. anywhere… 😂🤣
July 27th, 2019 at 6:17 pm
Sorry, Rob, the only staff I have ever been on is the medical staff in the hospital. How did us lowering make you laugh???

Too late, JW needed to learn that in high school or college. He is what he is.
