Joe has already written what he feels could be the secret weapon of the Bucs. That is Chris Godwin.
But a stenographer for a national publication seems to be of a slightly different mind.
Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report has a list of what he believes is the secret weapon of all 32 teams. With the Bucs, very much like Joe, it’s a receiver. Unlike Joe, Knox believes that weapon is Breshad Perriman.
You’ll be forgiven if you were unaware that wideout Breshad Perriman was even on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers roster. He only joined the team after the Browns acquired Odell Beckham Jr. and allowed Perriman out of a one-year deal.
A draft bust for Baltimore, Perriman had a resurgence with Cleveland last season. Though he only caught 16 passes, he posted 21.3 yards per reception—a testament to his elite speed.
It’s that speed that makes Perriman a secret weapon for the Buccaneers and quarterback Jameis Winston. With DeSean Jackson in Philadelphia, opposing teams may not be as quick to defend the deep ball. Perriman, however, can stretch the field with the best of them and should take over Jackson’s role as the go-route gasher.
Well, Joe is pretty confident Perriman won’t be pulling any of the stunts that malcontent receiver DeSean Jackson did. Joe will go ahead and guess Perriman will run the same routes with the same speed in games that he ran in practices.
If Perriman really does become a weapon for America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, this offense will sure be fun to watch.

Even if stretching the field is the only real utility Perriman brings, that still puts things even with what DJax brought, since DJax with Winston never did get on the same page. So if Perriman and Winston can get in even a little bit of a groove, with Godwin, Evans, OJ, and Brate…this could very well be the most dangerous passing O in the NFL…probably up there with NO. Still shaking my head over losing Hump…
The two players I’m planning to look at the most on the O are Perriman and Ellington. If those two can be pleasant surprises, the offense may just put on a pretty good show.

Maga, largely agree with your post. Though I’m not missing Hump as much as I was. He was no longer ours due to what be got paid. Tough decisions needed.to be made whether he was here or not. (see GMC as an example).
Could Hump have worked out here? Probably
At $8m a year? Probably not
We need to develop our next Hump.
I believe he’s on the roster already – Godwin, Watson, Miller, Demarkus Lodge
If you are concerned about his steady play and a go to outlet for Jamies? That makes sense, I would say our starting lineup is more than capable of filling that void. My guess is Godwin and the tight ends will be up to the task.

Interesting take on Perriman, although I personally doubt that he’ll surpass what DJax provided last year on the field. DJax was targeted 74 times & had 41 completions for 4 TDs & 774 yards (18.9 YPC). His catch percentage of 55.4% was fantastic, but it wasn’t out-of-line for a deep receiver either (Mike Evans averaged 53.4% catch percentage in his 1st FOUR years here).
With so many other targets (Evans, Godwin, OJ & Brate for starters), it’s hard to believe that Perriman will be targeted enough to match DJax numbers from last year. But that doesn’t matter as much as that he’ll be a THREAT that must be respected. If his speed & route running & pass-catching abilities can keep defenses honest, that’ll benefit our passing game AND running game. And that’ll be a HUGE PLUS.

Three things that could make Perriman more of a threat…..
One: Bruce Arians’ Offense
Two: A better defense giving the Bucs Offense more snaps
Three: Better chemistry with Jameis than Djax

I just hope our rbs are HEAVILY involved in the passing game with arians here. They were never utilized in the passing game.under koetter and lovie comparrd.to the rest of the league.

I will bet whoever does replace djax proves on the first deep bomb that it was desean slowing up on his routes rathwr than it being jameis over throwing him.
I.would love to see.somr.numbers with all.the technology the league uses now to find out how fast desean jackson ran on deep routes in philly, then washington, then tampa, and then the same for now being back in tampa.
Ive got some benjamins that bet his speed in tampa ends up being the slowest out of them all on gameday

I would be interested to know if Perriman is working with Jameis on his own this off-season. I seem to recall that being part of the problem in getting the timing down with djax.

“Kobe is a huge fan of Godwin however
It is night and day with the slot and outside receiver position
the slot has to gain separation within 5 yards vs 15 yards
that involves quickness and change of direction at the LOS
yes Godwin has been in the slot previously but fulltime is a different story
this is a totally new position Godwin has to learn. Hopefully, our new receiver coach can teach Godwin to speed up the learning curve.

I feel if any of the TE’s on the roster show enough in camp & preseason Brate could be gone. Mainly because of his salary.

If Breshad just fights for the ball or attempts to prevent a DB from getting it that’ll be a GREAT HELP. DJax never stretched out for a single pass, never tried once stopping a DB from getting a pick. He was like “Ghost Johnson” how he acted as if he was home sick for that $h*t hole Philadelphia (only bonus they won SB w/o him😁). Plus, by not having his big mouth & piss poor attitude in the locker room will be a plus to Jameis & the offense. IF Tampa can just become average in rushing, average on defense & above average in kicking Tampa should challenge for the division or wild card at least. This passing offense is scary with Mike Evens, OJ Howard, Chris Godwin, Cam Brate & Breshad Perriman. Can’t wait to watch this team this year provided they can survive that awful long wait between actual home games? Go Bucs!

Remember the stat I posted a few days ago?
In the NFL passes of 40 yards or more succeed at only a 20% rate. That’s a league wide stat that includes ALL NFL QBs.
Conversely a ten yard pass has an 80% chance of success. Hence the desire of some coaches to dink and dunk.
Here’s where it gets a bit tricky but I’m sure BA has been through all the combinations and permutations. But what I didn’t find was how many times the 40 yard pass set up a TD/FG..either on the pass itself or because of field position gained.
IE what I do not see is the % of scores that come after 40 yards compared to 10 yard completions. There are some obvious things such as longer drives requiring many more plays with opportunities for more fumbles, penalties etc.
Dink and Dunk or AFL style bombs away. I suspect you can make either approach work depending on coaching and talent.
One thing is sure however!!! If you watch JW throw deep this year expect him to fail roughly 4 times out of every five attempts. This is a LEAGUE WIDE average and not just JW.

People continue to complain about Jameis Winston and his deep ball but what other quarterback that the Bucs could realistically get is better than Jameis at this position point? Wait I’ll answer: NONE!

I just don’t get some still lamenting the loss of DJax. I get that he still had speed and some playmaking ability, but he also turned into a locker room cancer. He reminded me of Chad Ochocinco and Terrell Owens towards the ends of their careers. They each probably had a year or more left of playing at a high level, but NOBODY at that point wanted to deal with the baggage that came along with them. I see MeJax going down their same paths. It won’t be long before the baggage outweighs the production.

@macabee: all other things being equal, including speed, a 6’2″ guy and a 5’9″ guy offer completely different deep-ball windows, with the taller guy having an advantage.
I see Miller running deeper seam and crossing routes from the slot, not pure go routes from the outside.
4 wides with Evans, Godwin, Miller and Perriman could present significant coverage issues.

Great post StPeteBF! Spot on with the league wide deep passing info. I personally hope BA has a lot more passes to the backs added to our vertical passing game. I believe that’s one of the things he said when he initially was hired, so here’s hoping. I mean dink & dunk then a deep shot… What a concept?

Not sure how it will play out but I think Justin Watson will have a break out year during the second half of the season. He has both the height and speed along with descent hands – just need the opportunity.

He better be good since he is costing us a future 3rd or 4th round pick.
Same with the punter / Deon Buccanon or Shaq Barret. Barret signing was needed but not sure about 3rd/4th string speed WR or punter being worth a future mid round pick – however you want to look at it.

@kobe I just don’t understand how you can have the number one passing offense in the NFL and say Skyler Fulton wasn’t a good coach, personally one of the coaches I wouldn’t have been mad retaining. From Mike to Hump to Godwin I liked the play of our receivers last year.

Had MeSean been used as a decoy rather than an actual option, Jameis would have been better off, the team would have been better off, and people wouldn’t have as much to complain about. Koetter tried to force a square peg into a round hole and it was a disaster as that square peg was also a bad teammate who refused to practice and gave up on routes during games.
Perriman knows and respects Jameis and won’t whine like MeSean if Arians uses him primarily as a decoy. He has the speed to scare defenses but the team-first attitude to help and not hurt the Bucs as well.
Losing Mesean was addition by subtraction.

As with Jackson, winston cant throw the ball accurately down field. Like having a plane you cant fly.
