Once again, the comments section has someone who wears a padded helmet whenever they go outside. Kudos Joe on making sure special needs adults have a place to call home online!
I kind of like the idea of sitting 2 of 18. It fixes the biggest argument against 18 games (player durability), and gets bench players more emotionally involved in the season. It gives fans an opportunity to prove (or not) the coaches wrong about their favorite backups, and will provide real opportunities for those players to earn more playing time. I really like it. I LOVE the idea of watching our seldom-seen backup quarterbacks play!
The only drawback I can see is the possibility of quarterback injuries being blamed on this policy. Do you sit one or two offensive lineman every week to spread out the risk factor, or do you pick 2 games to go with a complete second-string o-line to just get it over with? Then you are all starters for the other 16 games.
I’m going with the theory that sitting out 2 games means non-participation all week from football activity (cardio allowed). If you are doing this to avoid injury and promote healing, you would have to allow the whole week, and not just game day. That means that if a bench player does not get into a game that he was suited up for, this does NOT count as non-participation. After all, he practiced all week.
52 players would sit out a collective 104 games. That is almost 6 1/2 players missing from your normal roster every week. To compensate, you have to figure that the rosters must be expanded by 6 or 8 men to maintain position flexibility. On the other hand, any free agent/injury replacement brought aboard after week 2 would be exempt from sitting out, unless they had been on another NFL roster in the first weeks.
I like the opportunities for more young men to make NFL rosters. Coaches will have way more stress and gray hair to deal with, though. If this doesn’t get approved, it will probably be to protect quarterbacks from injury.
Also, I would expand the practice squad by at least 4 members who will have a special designation: Practice Squad-Protected. PS-P members are protected from being signed by another team (unlike normal practice squad players).
To be fair to the player, he would be paid better than normal practice squad, and you would have a limit on the weeks you could keep him protected. This will give teams a way to sign a player and be able to train him for a week or two before you need to activate him as an anticipated replacement. You could also use this as a place to save a bubble player (paid his normal roster salary) that you cut, intending to bring him back next week. I’m thinking of it as a place you can rotate a few guys in and out of the roster, the way MLB teams use the AAA squad.
Or, perhaps I am way over thinking the whole thing. If so, instead of my PS-P idea, just expand the normal roster by like 11 or 12 instead of 7 or 8. This is just much more expensive for the team.

To be fair, the Seminoles had to come from behind in every game he ever won there, and I’m pretty sure that they were losing at halftime in every game during the championship season, Mister. LOL
And DB55, those who do may wonder little over whether the guy pointing the finger is the idiot.
You can’t distort Winton’s record by pretending only the positives exist, and/or by manufacturing some bogus lines that Winston critics don’t read deeper into all of it than you claim.
Your continuous race-baiting comments are uglier than racism itself. Shame on you.
Who would not want to see the Bucs, and ole coach stale biscuit, finish a 6-12 season!!!!!!!!!!!!
@DB55 while its not all jw3 fault for all the losing, he is not winning either, why pay top dollar for a qb that does not make a difference!!!! drafy a rookie and let the new GM build a “real” team!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pro’s: more football (fans), more money (owners/NFL)
Con’s: more injuries (players)
I think increasing the overall number of games can work IF the NFL also adds an extra bye-week. The length of regular season would increase by three (3) whole weeks! What’s not to love about that?! Owners and the League make their money. Players get the added risk of injury mitigated by an extra bye-week.
I think 16 games is perfect; 6 divisional games, 4 conference divisional games, 4 other conference divisional games, and 2 conference standings games. The math works beautifully. You know, years in advance, your opponents for 14 of the 16 games. It would be interesting to see how an 18-game schedule would work. From a players point of view, besides the expanded roster, the increased salary cap, and the extra bye-week; they should also counter the 18-game schedule with the proposal of guaranteed contracts. Football, the most physical and shortest career for professional sports, is the only major professional sport without guaranteed contracts. If the owners really push for an 18-game schedule, this might be the NFLPA’s best opportunity to get guaranteed contacts.
I voted no because I think the 4 preseason games are good for evaluating younger and “on the bubble” players. Plus when you have a team like the Bucs that is changing coaching staffs every 2-3 years I think the extra preseason games give players more time to work on executing new plays and schemes that a new coaching staff typically bring to their new team. A team like the Patriots that know their roster pretty well and have a system that’s been in place for a long time probably would be fine with an 18 game season (with fewer preseason games), but the “Browns South”…I’m thinking not.
How about your boy Incognito? One thing is certain. Our Guard will outplay Incognito big time the first two games of the year. LOL. But we will miss all his off field mental issues.
I gotta be honest. At the risk of sounding nasty, pompous or whatever…it’s hard for me to comment much on sick people like Incognito or Trump. If feel sorry for DJT because his father was a piece of work. I do not know Incognito’s background perhaps he too had an overbearing father or some other issue in his childhood but he clearly needs help.

expand the roster and salary cap as well
July 14th, 2019 at 12:33 am
Expanded roster and cap would obviously be required but I think they could put a game cap (16 games) on player time. That should satisfy the NFLPA.
July 14th, 2019 at 2:01 am
I’m ok with the idea provided the expanded roster and cap, however what would the playoff structure look like?

If the playoff structure changes, there’s no reason why it would be related to this policy, as far as I can see.

Why would anyone bother to vote if they were not sure?
I would like to extend the season and add bye weeks. If you play a Thursday night game, attach a bye week to it.
If you play a game out of the country, attach a bye week to it.
Space the bye weeks out evenly so they split the season into 3rds.
I’d be OK with 2 or3 bye weeks for players to recuperate a little more.
Expand the roster to 60 players and ditch the non-active rules.
Give every team one Mulligan, where they can pay Jameis $45 million a year, that doesn’t count against the salary cap.

Not if they cap the players games at 16
Stupid rule
July 14th, 2019 at 10:02 am
In favor of 18 games, but still 4 preseason games. Make them free and projected starters only play in two games.
Those games are a last chance for many to prove themselves. Too .uch talent is missed already.
July 14th, 2019 at 10:06 am
Do not cap games played. Bad idea.
Just add a second bye week, and make sure the bye weeks are in opposite halfs of the season.
And i crease rosters and game day actives.

Expand roster and salary cap. 2 preseason games but expand training camp. OTAs and mini camps in pads with hitting allowed.
