“I Thought I Was The Only Guy Who Hated Their Damn Uniforms”
July 4th, 2019As we wind down Independence Day by drinking our remaining cold beers, watching fireworks, and witnessing neighbors chasing down their pets who are freaked out by the fireworks, what better way for Joe to commemorate this day than to cite how a former Bucs player is among a growing legion of players and fans wanting independence from bad uniforms.
In 2014, the Bucs changed their uniforms from the red classics to — Joe isn’t sure what to call them other than “garish” or “CFL-like.” And other than one season, Joe isn’t sure which has been a bigger joke, the losses the Bucs rack up each year or those fugly costumes the team wears.
In recent weeks, Donovan Smith and O.J. Howard have taken to social media wanting the Bucs to trash their current threads and return to the red classics when the team enjoyed its greatest success.
A few days ago speaking on his podcast “In the Trenches,” former Bucs guard and current popular local sports radio personality Ian Beckles picked up the baton for the masses and called on Bucs management to do the right thing and get rid of these sad things the team wears on gamedays.
“I thought I was the only guy who hated their damn uniforms,” Beckles said. “Let’s get it out there now, OK? They suck. They suck. And they’ve sucked since they changed them.
“Listen, I’ve played in all creamsicle orange. Then they changed to pewter, that was fine. And then they went and changed it to these alarm clock stupid-@ss numbers that look ridiculous.
“And everybody is like, ‘Well, it is going to be the future of the numbers.’ Who else did it? Nobody else did it. Nobody. And our numbers look stoo-pid. … Our uniforms are not cool. Sorry. They are not. I think we should start a movement to bring back the orange.”
Here are the two potential problems for the Bucs to revert to the uniforms of old, or even the creamsicles:
The first issue is, someone very, very high up the food chain at One Buc Palace was heavily involved in the design of the current uniforms. And that person is highly unlikely to leave or be replaced at any point in the coming years. For the Bucs to rid themselves of the alarm clock fonts, this person would effectively have to indirectly admit to a very public failure.
The other possible reason the Bucs may not change uniforms is revenue from jersey sales. No, Joe does not have access to the revenue figures but so long as those jerseys are selling, the less likely it is the uniforms will change soon.
If people stopped buying those things, it might force management to make a move.
The Bucs’ current uniform reminds Joe of the original [Devil] Rays’ uniforms. The team touted the rainbow-like colors with purple trim as futuristic and trendsetting. Neither was the case. That expected future never came.
As always, Beckles welcomes feedback and encourages listeners to submit Bucs questions by e-mailing him at IanBeckles@RadioInfluence.com.

3 changes needed:
1) font sucks
2) logo on the helmet is way too big
3) pewter shoulder trim is garbage
Easy peasy. Fix those things and they can immediately increase merch sales. It’s doable for 2020.
July 4th, 2019 at 10:31 pm
Go back to the Super Bowl winning uniforms!!!
July 4th, 2019 at 10:40 pm
I personally like the font. They jus need to get rid of the stupid pewter shoulder and change the friggin numbers!
July 4th, 2019 at 10:41 pm
No to the creamsicles coming back! Cool throwback, but I don’t care to recreate anything with that as our main uni color
July 4th, 2019 at 10:47 pm
I want the 1997-2013 jerseys with the current helmet. Either that or find some way to make the helmet white so we can wear the creamsicles once a season or so.
July 4th, 2019 at 11:04 pm
I said it then and I’ll repeat it, “I’ll never spend one cent on these jerseys…ever”.
July 4th, 2019 at 11:11 pm
Whoever that “high up on the food chain” person that designed those uniforms is…thanks for embarassing us! Get off your high horse and admit your uniforms suck!
July 4th, 2019 at 11:33 pm
I thought Jones was a sub-4.4 guy in college.
July 4th, 2019 at 11:33 pm
Wrong thread. Lo siento.
July 4th, 2019 at 11:44 pm
Joe’s seemed to wired in on this one.
Here’s the thing, 1 person , was highly involved in a decision that has proven to be mostly a fail. That one person has that fragile of an ego or can’t possibly imagine being humble for a day and admitting what we all know.
I guess joe the point is …the collection of siblings, in their role as owners, have been so unbelievably successful with every single decision regarding this franchise that one person’s slight miss on an updated uniform design is nothing compared to the thousands of great decisions made everyday by these multi talented and very attractive owners.
Just saying…….
July 5th, 2019 at 12:01 am
Joe,
It doesn’t matter. That one person can’t escape the obvious. The alarm clock numbers are effing atrocious. It’s vomit inducing. If I am going to vomit, I want it to be from drinking too much. Either change the numbers or go back to the pewter and red. It’s not rocket science. Do it Glazers for the love of Buccaneer football.
July 5th, 2019 at 12:09 am
Love our new uni’s just don’t like the number font.
July 5th, 2019 at 12:11 am
Wouldn’t be surprised if Jason Licht has the final day in uniforms.
July 5th, 2019 at 1:08 am
It’s among the worst decisions this organization has made…
YES! go back to the uniforms before these or at lest more like those…
AND fix the helmets… They look like an amateurs designed them with the logo so big on the helmet…
July 5th, 2019 at 1:39 am
ok how do people or the bucs not realize this…
we have a lock on a color that no one else has, uses, or identifies with…
PEWTER…
that is the color to run with…it is ours…”buccanneer pewter”…
not the shift to this darker blackish color they’re using now…
pewter is the answer…of course with orange and red accenting…
we should really feature more orange and less red moving forward…it should be pewter orange and red…in that order of significance on the unis…
lets talk red…red is a crappy color in general in fashion…used primarily for accenting, it works…but as a feature color it sucks…it’s a hard sell…red shirt, red jackets, etc…these are not the colors people choose…it’s just a tacky color in general…
now pewter…it’s like a mix of brown and grey and hints of black…that’s a freakin’ color…
they’ve been saying brown is the new black in fashion for years now…so pewter is like the sickest color out there…and we have a complete lock on it…run with it…fix the uniform issue…
they really could also use a full pewter uni head to toe…with orange and red accenting…orange numbers could even be considered…
the “alarm clock” uni’s don’t seem to be working…the bucs have been sleepwalking in them for years, and no one seems to be waking up!
July 5th, 2019 at 1:49 am
i’m really the one who should be re-working the unis since i’m an artist…i would have the boys looking fresh af coming out that tunnel on sundays…the whole league would take notice…

July 5th, 2019 at 2:01 am
Joe they don’t have to admit public failure … when they design uniforms they design more than one and to which I am sure there is a vote as to which one To go with so it’s not on one person … secondly I read a article in which Brian glazer said there is a great chance there can be a change but if it did it wouldn’t be this season but possibly next season
July 5th, 2019 at 2:04 am
When the Bucs do go to new uniforms honestly they should go back to the super bowl uniforms not the creamsicle…. love the creamsicles but those fit the 20th century not this century… leave the logo and the helmets we have now and go with the Super Bowl uniforms
July 5th, 2019 at 3:15 am
Adam,
What do you have….. if you got a few ideas there’s no shortage of uniform templates and UA, Adidas, and Nike have fabric boards to click on. So why not put something out there.
I know there’s a lot of love for the pewter and red originals…..am I the only one who remembers the pewter pants in sept, Oct and Nov home games looked like a diaper broke and the players soiled themselves. I’m cool with the unis but not those depends athletic fit pants.
The color rush unis…. not the entire look but the dominant red color with the silver used in the numbers is something to work with. Silver is easier to replicate across fabrics, helmets, shoes, then the pewter . Pewter aka sh=t stain brown. Looks fine on a helmet but it’s not working on fabric.
Adam if design something put a link in the latest post…
July 5th, 2019 at 5:40 am
Uniform, Schumaform. How about winning some damn games!
July 5th, 2019 at 5:42 am
I remember people hated the Rays new uniform look in 2008 until they went to the World Series.
I kinda like the Bucs uniforms but I much preferred the previous ones.
July 5th, 2019 at 5:55 am
joe – stop censoring my posts for no reason bro

Tell Darcy that this is the NFL NOT a fashion show! Darcy stick to doing what you do best…. spending your family’s money.
July 5th, 2019 at 8:02 am
The current uniforms are awful. They were ridiculed from day one. They are associated with some of the worst seasons in franchise history. Get some professional help, Bucs.
July 5th, 2019 at 8:18 am
Adam that kind of thinking is why NY taking over Tampa Bay has screwed the area up!
July 5th, 2019 at 8:19 am
Admit they made a mistake, huh, who in Tampa Bay sportsdom does that. I hate stat geeks that measure these things but have the Bucs been voted or viewed in the bottom 3 for uniforms since they came out.
The triple header
– bad uniforms
– 11 straight non playoffs
– coaching carousel
July 5th, 2019 at 9:11 am
Ugly AF
July 5th, 2019 at 9:23 am
Beckles is a joke. Lowbrow Steven A Smith wannabe.
July 5th, 2019 at 9:52 am
This would be no admission of a mistake than hiring the wrong coach and firing them as much as they do. Get rid of these awful uniforms and go back to the Super Bowl era ones. I see them in Tallahassee all the time. Never do I see this new garbage.
July 5th, 2019 at 9:55 am
The uniform suck…bad! Please, whoever’s this high up the food chain person is, change the uniform. It’s time. The numbers are awful, way too many colors and did I mention the numbers? Use an updated design around the SB winning jerseys.
The fans need this…. and wins!
July 5th, 2019 at 10:00 am
Whichever Glazer sibling that designed these football uniforms should take that as a mirror reflection of their ability to find a winner. What stinks worse, our win-loss record, or the alarm clock font?
Failures!
July 5th, 2019 at 10:31 am
Change the uniforms. NOW! THEY SUCK!
I have a closet full of classic SB era Bucs jerseys – but have not purchased a single new style jersey since they were released 5 years ago. And will not purchase another Bucs jersey until the design is changed to something that doesn’t look ridiculous.
The ball was dropped so hard on this issue 5 years ago that it is truly embarrassing. Our players have to wear the ugliest uniforms in the league and there is literally no excuse for how badly the uniform “change” was handled.
FIX THIS NOW GLAZERS!
July 5th, 2019 at 10:54 am
The Bucs level of play matches these ugly rinkydink uniforms.
July 5th, 2019 at 11:17 am
Orange should be the main color no matter what…Current look is too close to other teams, namely Falcons, etc. Do the creamsicle color with red-black-pewter trim maybe and keep the current logo on the helmets. I’m all for the originals/throwbacks and think they’re great but a compromise would be sufficient…
July 5th, 2019 at 11:52 am
Keep the current helmet and fix the uniforms. Just slightly update the super bowl era uniforms.
Creamsicle is great for a throwback game, but that’s it. If you think the Bucs are bad now you should watch some old games from the creamsicle days, we don’t need a repeat of that.
July 5th, 2019 at 12:32 pm
Joe’s,
Can you run a poll and see were the fans fall on the uniforms and helmets separately?
July 5th, 2019 at 1:10 pm
Fix the ridiculous numbers, looks like those old 80’s alarm clock numbers. Fix the logo on the helmet, who thought that oversized logo would work. Not the best, but I can live with the rest of the uniform.
July 5th, 2019 at 2:02 pm
If they’re not going to change to a new uniform altogether, then at least transition into using the home color rush red’s as the primary look. Just remove the corner ‘slits’ inside the alarm clock numbers and throw on the pewter bottoms and just like that the Bucs look remarkably better. That alone would provide somewhat of a “modernized” design of the Super Bowl era uni’s that we all love. Sh!+… even just getting rid of the hideous wanna-be-pewter-but-its-really-brown shoulder tops would DRAMATICALLY improve the jersey.

#Changetheuniforms..changetheworld
July 5th, 2019 at 4:12 pm
The current uniforms are garbage – but then what do you expect when you have an anti-American SJW company like Nike doing the design. They probably hired some crippled he-she bi-gay-dog toucher to meet an internal quota and that thing got put in charge of the Bucs uniform.
If the NFL is going to continue to do business with Nike, which they shouldn’t, then the Bucs have only one choice. Back to the original design, which is universally loved, and wait until Nike is fired before even attempting to do a redesign. Oh, and when you do a redesign, you need orange. It’s Florida, make it look Florida-ish.
July 5th, 2019 at 4:24 pm
We might as well look like sh*t since we play that way.
July 5th, 2019 at 4:56 pm
Wouldn’t a return to the Superbowl uniforms still be great for jersey sales?
We have never seen most of these guys in that uniform.
Jameis… Mike Evans… etc etc…
July 5th, 2019 at 6:26 pm
If the person ‘high up’ is the same person that changes coaches every few years, we are far enough into this bad experiment that they can change the uniforms. Go back to Pewter adn leave it alone.
July 5th, 2019 at 8:38 pm
Yeah they suck snd I everyone knew it when they released the design.
July 5th, 2019 at 9:25 pm
Been counting down the years to the next release and there seems to be no end insight for these atrocious uniforms. First to worst and the play on the field as well as our drafts have blown ever since.
July 5th, 2019 at 10:28 pm
No creamsicles please. We tried so hard to get rid of them and finally did. I don’t get this retro movement. Creamsicle orange is cool? Never was, never will be.
July 5th, 2019 at 11:18 pm
Hell no to Creamsicle as the permanent unis. They’re more ugly than this garbage now. Creamsicle is soft AF and we started winning consistently once we went to Pewter. Pewter was trendy. I’m ok with the helmets. Looking at the old helmets, they look dark, dull, and the logo is tiny. Our best graphic is the Flag. Make it shine by letting it have the grandest stage like it is now. The chrome grill was an ok touch.
The digits gotta go. I’m not that hung up on the shoulder area, cuz I’m too busy glued to the ugly AF digits. But, if that goes too, I won’t care.
July 5th, 2019 at 11:20 pm
There’s 2 reasons not to buy a Bucs jersey
1. They’re fugly
2. There’s usually nobody that is guaranteed to be on the team for the long term.
If they changed their jerseys, I’d buy a Devin White Jersey right meow.
July 6th, 2019 at 1:29 am
These owners are clueless. It’s obvious the majority of fans hate these garbage uniforms yet nothing changes. Joes, run a poll and make sure the glazers are aware. FYI.. The last time we changed unis (prior to the newest ones) we started winning. Just sayin….
July 6th, 2019 at 10:19 pm
Adam, make that orange burnt and you’d have my vote to head up the project. You’ve obviously given it more thought than they have.
July 7th, 2019 at 8:10 am
No matter how anybody feels, the uniforms can only be changed once every five years.
